What an amazing meal! True South American cuisine with an amazing wine list. I was greeted at the back door (came in off the sidewalk...not the main entrance) by the hostess who immediately seated me. My husband was parking the car. Main entrance is through the Dairy Market entrance to the right past the Moo ice cream place. I was told I was beautiful by the woman who serves water which made me verclempt (aka teary eyed) and she asked if I wanted a hug...hell yes I did...boost to self esteem and dinner with the handsome husband for his birthday. We started with the avocado salad and provoleta and had the filet (we split everything) and got an amazing bottle of Argentinian Malbec. We finished with the cheesecake in dulche de Leche and it was amazing. The aperitifs were awesome and the food spectacular. There is nothing on the menu I would steer you away from. One of the newest additions to the Dairy Market. Seems like the menu rotates quite a bit as several pictures of dishes we have seen were not on the current menu and were not nightly specials. The food was good, pricey, but good. We didn't have reservations, but were able to find seats at the bar. The house paloma was okay, but not what an $11 drink should be. I will pass on cocktails next time. We split the chicken tacos appetizer, which I thoroughly enjoyed, the sirloin which was good as well, and the grilled street corn. Personally, the corn was the star of the show. On future visits, I will probably skip the entrees and enjoy an appetizer paired with a side item. For example, on a return visit, I could easily order pupusas and roasted vegetables or the fingerling potatoes and a grilled romaine salad. read more

Just had the Charasco Platter. It has delicious ribs, chicken, sausage and pork belly. It comes with your choice of yummy sauces. Shared it with with my spouse. It was awesome. They're test driving this dish - hoping they decide to include iton their regular menu. Also had the chocolate flan - flan on top of chocolate cake with a scoop of peppermint ice cream on top. Visiting University of VA from out of state. We were staying at Graduate Charlottesville (total dump- that's another review). Nothing in the immediate area was open (Monday night) or inspiring. Found South And Central within short 13 minute walk. Holy smokes! This restaurant checked all of the boxes. Beautifully excellent design aesthetic. Great vibe. Amazing live music with a duo playing primarily Spanish guitar genre. My son had the steak frites and was purring with pleasure from the first bite. I ordered the snow crab stew special. It tasted heavenly. The only issue with my dish was the snow crab came out still IN their shells. It was awkward, slippery and messy to try and extract them from the shells. Plus I have arthritis so my poor hands just don't have the strength. I would not have ordered this dish had I known this in advance, they definitely need to tell the diners when there is considerable labor involved in the consumption of your own dinner. The waitress took pity on me and brought my dish back to the kitchen and emerged with the snow crab extracted, albeit with a fair amount of shell now in the stew. However, the taste and texture was so fabulous I just picked around the shells. We finished our dinner with the delicious flan. Will definitely return if ever back in Charlottesville! read more

I took my family here for mothers day.. We've visited this place a few times, but for mother's day we had a few drinks and ordered our food. I asked the waitress to bring my steak medium, but it came out between medium well and well done. She of course wanted to make sure her customers were taken well care of took the steak back to the kitchen.. Little did I know the chef's EGO was going to be shocked..!! By the way I understand the chef is also part owner of this place. Long story short, the GM came out and said the chef will not be cooking me another steak.. We have eaten at the majority of the "must go to spots" in Charlottesville over the years, and in all honesty, this might be one of the best meals I've had! The food was fantastic and I wouldn't change a thing! The steaks were cooked to perfection and each small plate and side dish was freshness and flavorful. We had two cocktails that were both very tasty and good portioned, and I appreciate that they have mezcal tequila. The wait staff was very friendly, prompt, and helpful throughout our dinner. The only "area of improvement" would be to have the wait staff more knowledgeable on their cocktails/wine. Some staff is under 21 yoa which isn't their fault, but is a limitation to knowledge of the beverages. Overall this restaurant is a must try if you're in the area! It is definitely one of the best restaurants in my opinion and we will most certainly be coming back again soon! read more

The decor was very sophisticated and curated: the whole restaurant had a very modern yet cozy feel. As soon as we entered, mouthwatering scents from their in-house smoker drifted over to us. We ordered the Provoleta and wings first. The Provoleta (grilled provolone cheese) had a delicious smoky flavor and seasoning blend on top. The wings came with an array of amazing sauces, and were perfectly smoked. For my entree, I ordered the burger. Although their menu is constantly rotating, mine had pineapple and bacon on it. The marriage of sweet and salty was heaven, and the burger was incredibly flavorful and super tender. The servers were very attentive and helpful with the menu. Perhaps the overall best dining experience I have ever had. Firstly, the interior design is beautiful. Secondly, the hostesses were incredibly kind and informational. We were seated at the bar in front of the grill and it was nice seeing how the grill items are cooked (also the chefs there are attractive but you didn't hear this from me lmao). Had dinner here last night. The drinks were absolutely phenomenal and the food itself was rather good. However, for the price of dining at this restaurant I expected better service. I asked my server for details on a dish and he admitted he knew nothing about the plate and when he asked another server she was also unable to describe what the dish was. I was dining with a party of 7 and all of our entrees came slowly and separately - probably a range of 10-15 minutes between the first entree and when the last person got their entree. It also took 20 minutes for us to get steak knives. At a steakhouse, we all had steaks but no steak knives for more than half the meal. Also, my boyfriend and I ordered the same cut of meat, but ordered them at two different temperatures - rare and medium - but they both arrived medium rare. TL;DR Overall, okay food, great drinks. For the price of dining, needs to work out significant service kinks. Might just be a symptom of being a new restaurant. read more

Everything about this place was great. For this trip it is one of my 2 favorite places. Place looks awesome. The service was fast & friendly. You get one sauce with your order & I could not decide so they gave me both. I had the Argentina cheese appetizer was was amazing & & I had the house made sausage which also was amazing. I went here for lunch today after checking out their menu on line. When I sat down and looked at the menu I thought I was at the wrong place. No lomo saltaldo, no anticuhos, and you had to know to ask for fried yuca because it was not on the menu. The ceviche was terrible and had sliced Jalapeño peppers not aji amarillo peppers. The service was great and the only saving grace. We ended up with arepa which were OK The price for lunch with only one of the 3 having a drink was $110. We ate at South And Central last night to celebrate my husband's birthday. This is a steak house with amazing steaks, but also lots of Central and South American flavors. I had the beet salad and my husband had the avocado salad to start with. We both loved our choices - the dressings were unusual and wonderful. My husband had the ribeye, along with the roasted potatoes and the seasonal vegetables (grilled shitaki mushrooms and carrots). He loved every bite. I had the chicken tostada, with homemade tortilla and a delicate tomato sauce. So good! Because we had said it was my husband's birthday, we got a fabulous chocolate brownie with ice cream for dessert, on the house. My husband said it was one of the top desserts he had tasted - ever! Last Sunday a group of us dined at South and Central and we LOVED everything about the place. The inside dining room and bar area are spacious and tastefully decorated. The outside seating is great if you bring your pet. The menu offers a wide array of delicious choices. I am vegetarian and had no difficulty finding an option that I totally enjoyed. Others in my group raved about their meat dishes. The wine was very good and priced fairly. The service was attentive and pleasant. I've started coming to this place a lot more recently. The food overall has always been good the establishment itself is very pretty and presentable. However, the more I go the less I want to go back. I've seen how the staff is treated by managers behind the bar and in the dining room in general and it's just not the kind of place I feel good about continuing to support, nor should the employees have to deal with that kind of treatment anyway. It seems to me like some of the staff members are very volatile and unpredictable as a more regular customer I can attest to this I never know how X employee will behave if they will be kind or short tempered with their coworkers. read more

Service was a little slow and the place was not that busy so need more focus on being attentive. Food was good and my burger was cooked properly. The prices are quite high, too high in my opinion for the quantity or quality of food. To compensate for the burger special ($8) it appears they increased the prices of the sides because what we paid is higher than what is listed on the website.
