let me just start off by saying South Austin Gym is the best! Everyone there is super friendly, and the gym has a really good vibe. It's clean, fun, and a great place to work out. Great gym to learn the sweet science. It's been about 8.5-9 years for me of boxing training. Very few workouts are equivalent to boxing. It's exhausting in a good way and helps develop movements that are applicable to many sports. It is an excellent activity for kids/teens/young adults/adults who want to be high performers in their respective sports! Randy was my first personal boxing trainer and he has had around 10 of his coaches train me as well. I even did some classes for the first 3-4 years of my boxing journey. This is an edit to my earlier review 7 weeks ago. *Scroll to the bottom for a summary if you don't want to read the whole thing.* Basically I got a concussion here because the coaches can't control their "fighters" i.e. old men who can't resist proving their masculinity by beating up a girl. So 7 weeks, $2k in Emergency Room hospital bills, dozens of lost work hours later, I am better. So what happens with a concussion is you get heavy migraines for hours all day every day. So heavy that Advil doesn't cut it. You need a TON of sleep just to get through the day and you can't concentrate on anything. I am STILL experiencing slight post-concussion syndrome as I write this 7 weeks later. I MAY have permanent damage. I'm NOT a newbie fighter by the way. I'm a 5'1" 115 lb. female with years of kickboxing and sparring experience. I paid $25 for a day pass and a bunch of middle-aged men (MULTIPLE weight classes above mine) thought it would be fun to "go hard on a girl." The class was NOT a sparring class, NOR was it meant specifically for fighters. It was just their regular 12pm kickboxing class. Oh and I didn't learn anything either. The coach had no interest in actually teaching. He was more into egging on the students to "go hard." I am talking to lawyers about suing the gym for unsafe conditions. Everyone knows that 16 oz. gloves are required at most gyms to ensure safety. Same with headgear, mouthguard and a competent coach. South Austin Gym had none of those requirements in place. The guys who hit my head hard were guaranteed NOT to be wearing 16 oz. gloves. I'm betting they were 10-12 oz. Less padding = more head trauma. For those of you interested in getting into boxing, kickboxing, or martial arts, check out Lord's Boxing Gym and Austin Kickboxing Academy, with a preference for Lord's. Richard Lord knows what he's doing and doesn't allow for unsafe i.e. STUPID behavior. I cannot believe this gym is actually still in business. DO NOT GO HERE. I love this gym! Randy Palmer, the owner, is very encouraging and reaches out to me several time a week for motivation and support for my health and diet. And the instructors are really amazing, patient, encouraging, and have a wealth of knowledge. The classes are never too large, and I have plenty of opponents I can spar with. I love stepping into the boxing ring and practicing my skills. They have a great selection of top-notch free weights and equipment too. I've gained a lot of confidence since joining the gym and have lost 15lbs. I have tried the jujitsu, kickboxing, and boxing classes and can attest that all the instructors and students are great. My favorite part about going to the gym is punching the heavy bag to reduce stress and work on my technique. I feel a little guilty writing this since I've been in long term relationships with gyms before but South Austin Gym is my DREAM gym!! All of the boxing and weightlifting equipment is in top shape and the gym is meticulously clean. There is a lot of space to move around and lots of squat racks and other equipment for heavier weightlifting, sleds and tires for metabolic conditioning, etc. The coaching has been really good and the women's locker room is nicer than I expected. I'll be reviewing this gym from a boxing point of view. If you are an experienced boxer I would not recommend this gym. For beginners who enjoy working out in a group setting, I think this gym would work well for you. The facilities are decent and the people who work there are friendly. This gym will be somewhere between $100 and $180 per month depending on the length of contract. You get boxing classes included in this price. This is also the minimum price you would pay just for access to the heavy bag. There is value in that price if you are looking to learn the basics. However, I feel that the quality of instruction provides no value to the intermediate to advanced boxer. (I can't speak to the quality of the kickboxing classes, as boxing is my specialty.) For the intermediate to advanced boxer, you can get a membership to Richard Lord's boxing gym as well as LA Fitness for less than the cheapest boxing plan at South Austin Gym. This would give you access to sparring with professional and amateur boxers, multiple boxing trainers with pro and amateur experience, a pool, a sauna, and all additional LA Fitness locations. Neither membership would include a contract. If this gym had a membership that was somewhere around $60 to $80 a month where I could do my boxing work with no access to group classes, I would still be there. As it stands, I cannot justify membership at current prices. read more

I love this gym. This is the place if you want to learn how to fight. I only do the free weights, which is also the best by far for another reason, but the classes for kickboxing and mma are rediculous. They give members by far the best teaching and workouts. As a spectator, I watch the participants get pushed to the limits and leave the gym in a pile of sweat. Most gyms just let you punch a bag, do some pushups and call it a workout. If I didn't have an ankle injury, I would join them. Thank god for the MMA classes, because the free weights are also AWESOME. The weights are mostly basic, but everything you would ever need. BUT, the best part is the fact that the fighting is such a big draw. It takes everyone away from the weights and allows me to just do my workout. It is for: Those who like to workout hard and go home. It is NOT for: Those who like to chat and check out chicks while they work out. 1 year ago I decided to join South Austin Gym after realizing that I needed to make some changes in my life. Specifically, I had gotten out of shape (after about 1.5 years of not exercising), I was extremely stressed out from working very long hours, and I lacked any real hobbies/interests outside of working and going to bars. I had never boxed or tried any sort of martial arts before, but I had always had an interest in it, despite never being very coordinated or athletic. During my first class I felt awkward at first because, of course, I didn't know the skills or routines, but everyone was very friendly and helpful. There were a spectrum of people ranging from others who had recently signed up, to experienced people, and they generally pair you up with a partner with similar experience level/weight class/gender. Also, my shirt was completely and utterly saturated in sweat when I left! Over the course of 2-3 months I had slowly and steadily learned basic techniques, I lost at least 15 lbs (FYI, I did cut back on drinking substantially, so that definitely helped!), and I became much less stressed! The workouts are very intense, and it gave me a fun outlet take my angst out on. I usually attend the noon classes, and have had several different instructors since signing up last year. All have been very helpful, dedicated, and friendly. The classes are generally between 5-15 people, so you get a lot of one-on-one attention. Generally a class begins with a quick (but not easy) warm-up, line drills (essentially two people punch each other's gloves), and then whatever the lesson plan is for the day. Sparring is optional. They will teach you to do things like throwing punches at 1/2 speed, only body shots, etc., so that way you won't have to worry about getting hurt. Once you're more experienced and know techniques to defend yourself they will let you spar with people of your same experience level. This is my favorite part! For me, there's nothing more exciting than boxing another person because you know that if you mess up you're going to get hit! Everyone in the classes are very respectful and there are agreed upon rules such as only throwing punches lightly/1/2 power (they can still hurt, but only for a few seconds... this is boxing after all), backing away if the other person gets too exhausted, only throwing shots to the body, etc. This is by far the most intense type of exercise/sport that I have ever done. Anyways, after a year of taking boxing classes at South Austin Gym, I honestly consider signing up to be one of the best decisions of my life. The 2-4 classes that I take per week are the funnest activity that I do regularly, it has made me so much more athletic (my legs and core are much much stronger!), and I'm much less stressed out than I used to be. read more

I had an awful experience with this gym, they sold me a group-on that does not state it does not include bag use. However, the lady at the front desk informed me that I could use the beat up heavy bags in the back of the gym. These bags were removed from the gym after a few months and I bought a membership for a whole year. I feel like they mislead others into buying this group on and after speaking with group on, they said that others have has the same issue in which they have not fixed it still. As far as the gym goes it is very mediocre and does have all the necessary equipment but lacks cleanliness and knowledgeable staff. For the price of this membership I could workout at a real gym with treadmills that actually work and up to date equipment. read more

How well I enjoyed class really depended on who was teaching. The owner never taught any of the classes when I was there in the evening. Some of the instructors really did a great job! Other times a kid (around 19) who worked at the front desk taught class. I had my membership suspended due to an injury. I decided to cancel my membership and was charged for two additional months. I was told the second month was due to the "30 day rule". Well, I cancelled my membership this month (December) and still had to pay through February. Lame. read more

South Austin Gym really is where you want to go for an amazing workout as well as learning a new skill-set. Yes, they do have full gym with cardio equipment and weights, but they are geared toward Kickboxing, Brazilian Ju-Jitsu, Boxing & MMA... I had specifically picked this gym for their kickboxing/muay thai classes AND the fact you can go to as many classes as you like was also a perk. Although I had done kickboxing a little bit previously, I wanted to get back into it. So I started at South Austin Gym in January 2014 and I am so glad I did! I am an athletically inclined individual & enjoy pushing myself to see what I can achieve. The classes here will definitely make you work, but in a good way. The instructors are awesome and really want to help you learn the art. Not only is it a great stress reliever & confidence builder, it's really is A LOT of fun AND you get an amazing workout! Yes, I said it a FUN WORKOUT. My technique and skill level has improved immensely due to the instruction I receive in class. I've recently added the Boxing class to my weekly regiment, not only for the additional workout but also to improve my overall ability. Honestly, I think I am in the best shape of my life and I owe that to Randy & the coaches at SAG. :) TIP: They have a KICKSTART introductory lesson that will teach you some of the basics of kickboxing & boxing so you are not flying blind in class. read more

Okay. I don't know WHERE that photo came from of that weight room, but that is most certainly not what is in the actual gym. I came across this gym through Groupon (I get what I paid for, eh? Kind of like the $1 burgers at Wendy's that's just one dollar to remind you of the shame). It advertises stairmasters, ellipticals, treadmills, etc. There's maybe... what... 9 treadmills? Facing the wall. What a view. Oh, and only 3 work. I've mentioned it to the front desk, but after two months, none were fixed. Some don't turn on at all, some of them have televisions that don't work (if your iPod dies and you don't want to look at a wall), and some aren't accurate. For example, I set the treadmill to 6.5 and was barely jogging. The settings aren't calibrated. AND THERE ARE NO STAIRMASTERS! My butt cried. It literally cried. The weight room is decent at first. It seemed to be a pretty legit gym, somewhere I could go without having to fight for a bench and to not get judgmental looks from females seeing another female lift heavy weights (it's annoying, girls, stop it). They're old, but hell. They're weights, who cares? They don't have too much to offer as far as equipment is concerned, but at first... looked like enough for me. Fast forward a month, and the floor started separating like a post-bar fight on sixth street when the cops show up. It's a bunch of black mats pushed together that are clearly no longer on good terms with one another, because some of them are so far apart and others are over the other. Excellent for carrying heavy weights and, well, tripping on. I didn't know the membership came with a free hand-eye coordination course. I've always wanted to work on my balance. Oh, and there will always been at least weight machine (or more) that is broken. Seriously. They, too, are old and not maintained any longer. No one wipes up after themselves, and the front desk never enforces it. I've even seen some front desk people work out (which is totally cool) on shift, but not wipe the equipment after (which is totally not cool). I gave it a novel because it's a gym worth checking out if you're into kickboxing/boxing/muy thai. I personally never took a class, but they look legit as hell. I DO NOT recommend this gym for anyone looking for weights and cardio--your basic fitness. I'd recommend somewhere else, like 24Hour Fitness, because it's still affordable, it's 24 hours, and literally has everything you need (can you tell where I got my new membership?). And will fix their broken equipment. This gym doesn't seem to care much for regular gym goers, but moreso their kickboxing/fighting/boxing/badasspeopleIwishIwere goers instead. read more

If you want to lose some pounds and inches, come to South Austin Gym. I have always tended to stall out at other gyms but not here. Randy and Maurice will make sure that you never run out of new moves, techniques, exercises, etc. for you to stall out. If you're serious about boxing, kick-boxing, or martial arts, you'll get outstanding instructors, but if you just want to lose weight and build muscle you'll get the best workouts ever. I have been here for 21 months and have nothing but good things to say. By the way, age is not a problem. (I'm 62 years old.) read more

I've been going to this gym for about a year and a half. It used to be great, but there have been too many changes. First, Ronnie Lis (who taught the BJJ) left to go on his own. He was a great instructor. They've turned the BJJ area into a multi-purpose area that doesn't serve any of those purposes well. There's tires to flip, but no room to flip them. A place to drag a sled, but the sled area is too short to do much good. The area is ok for stretching/foam rolling, but that prevents people from using it for anything else. There's some junky/broken cardio equipment and a broken leg extension machine in there, too. The only good thing about the back area now is the free weight equipment. As for the rest of the weight and cardio equipment, you'll have to hop around on a few different cardio machines to find something that works. The weight equipment is decent, but for the price you pay, there are MUCH, MUCH better places to workout. The classes they offer are second rate and very over-priced for the instructors you're getting. The instructors are too young and inexperienced and generally not knowledgeable in what they're teaching. Basically, they shouldn't be teaching boxing and Muay Thai. Of course Randy (the owner) knows what he's doing when it comes to Muay Thai, but he isn't the one teaching the classes. Again, there are MUCH, MUCH better places to go for the price of the classes. The MMA classes are restricted to inside the cage...which is ridiculous. A group of 15 guys inside one cage trying to learn mma is just dumb. Avoid MMA at this place. Overall, if you're looking for Boxing, Muay Thai or MMA, go somewhere else. If you're looking for a place with great weight equipment and cardio equipment, go to the Golds Gym nearby. But, if you're looking for a place that tries to do everything and does all of it poorly, South Austin Gym is the place to go. I'll be going elsewhere soon. One positive about the place is that it's never busy, but that's because, like I said, there are much better places to workout. The ONLY way I'd recommend a membership here is if you catch one of their specials where you can get a year for $120. It's worth it for an average of 10 bucks a month, but the normal price of $34 (for the basic membership) is way too much. Came in to try the gym out tonight because I heard good things. My workout was only going to take 20 minutes as I told the guy at the desk. He charged me $15, okay cool, he tells me that's a 1 day pass. When I leave (20 minutes later) I ask the same person if I can come back tomorrow before 6pm? 1 day = 24 hours right? The same guy makes this weird thinking emoji face and says "I don't know I'll have to ask Mo". I wanted to give a local gym a chance but I think I'll stick to 24 Hour Fitness. At least there I would have got shown around and the day pass would have been for a day. I was even going to buy a t-shirt if I liked the place. I lucked upon this gym by noticing it wasn't a Goodwill anymore. With my face pressed to the glass I look through and saw people working out, and boxing and kicking...I was excited and intimidated all in the same body. It took me walking in the doors 5 times and one talk with Instructor Randy before he and I convinced me that I wanted to be stronger, fit and kick butt. He said "let me hold you accountable; you will get better." Seven months later, I could do push ups, I could plank, I could run without wanting to pass out. I loved the stress release of punching a bag. I loved sparring & learning techniques with all the talented instructors. No doubt I have been kicked, punched and put on my bum many times but not without learning how to not let it happen again...so easily. It was awesome. And the best part..without really paying attention just enjoying class and friends, I lost 20 in the process and it hasn't returned. That was and has been the 2nd most important lesson from instructor Randy...Have a "Kai" best Japanese translation- Practice getting 1% better each day. Those 1% really do add up. read more

The "kickboxing", if thats what you want to call it is terrible. The staff have no skills or legit background in the sport. I tried working with them. I tried explaining to them nicely that they weren't doing it right, but they always had a chickenshit remark or excuse of some kind or another that was designed to squash the conversation. I told Randy to put sparring on the class schedule more than once and he never did it. I tried talking to Mo about the Instructors not being good at their jobs and he said "I don't want to hear it." They do stupid cross fit style warm ups instead of jumping rope. That is followed by some stupid partner drills where they tag each other in the boxing gloves with the most basic combo. You don't learn, and you don't get a good work out like that. It is also not any fun. If you wanted to be a competitive fighter you wont be able to get to that level here. The truth is all the kickboxing and muay thai gyms in Austin suck ass. I mean everyone. YOU DONT UNDERSTAND!.....YOU HAVE TO BE LEGIT! read more

I tried out a free boxing class at this gym (sometime in 2013). It really wasn't much of an experience. I have had boxing lessons for over 2+ years in California, Dallas before coming to Austin. I was expecting a more organized and focused approach to teaching boxing. The plan was to get in shape but also to improve my skills. However it seemed more like you pretty much do your own thing, without anybody looking at technique or working on drills. We did jump rope, hit the bags in a few rounds and then one round of mitt work with the trainer. After that it was like do some core exercises but do your own thing. I have had trouble motivating myself to push harder, and in the other places I have trained, the idea of a group class and trainer was to push you harder, keep you motivated and improve your skills. I am not sure about the other classes (kickboxing etc). I have heard good reviews about them, that's why I checked out the boxing class. In my opinion its not really a top notch class. So if you really learning to improve your technique or if you are a complete beginner this might not be the place. But if you just want to train, punch the bag, jump rope and have a some sort of mild organized activity..this might be an OK fit. read more

Started boxing as a workout about 6 months ago and when my original trainer left town i started looking around to take it to the next level given how much fun i was having. Found SAG and first impressions with the training staff was all very positive. They seemed very very focused on technique and making sure you enjoyed your time and not just throwing you in the deep end to see if you can take a punch. Since I am now looking to box competitively, i have not doubt that these guys will make sure i am ready when i get into the ring when the time comes. Being over 45... this is going to be key. As for the equipment, the gym started replacing their equipment and it is now on par with any gym in the Austin area and i am assume it is just going to get better. read more

I subscribed there to have kickboxing classes about 2 months ago and now I'm very pity about that. At the beginning I thought it was OK. I'm not a boxer, never have had such classes and couldn't estimate the incompetence of the personnel. 1) The first doubt appeared when only after 2 classes the coach put me for sparring with a quite experienced guy (Kicks only))). I even didn't know how to kick properly! As a result I was incapacitated and took the day off at my work. 2) The second doubt appeared when I noticed that they do not distinguish between a) genders; b) ages; c) healthy and unhealthy people; d) slim and over-weighed; e) novices and advanced. They give the same load. That means that they don't know the rudimentaries of the sports medicine and don't have a common sense. 3) The third doubt arisen when the coach began to manipulate and force. For example: I was very exhausted at the end of the class and could not proceed with the kicking. He said: either you proceed or you do push-ups. 4) When I pointed their attention to some of these negative observations, they said: "A! This is martial arts! It's competitive! Some people train up to death." That means that these guys completely misunderstand the purpose of the sport activity: to make a human healthier and happier. Everything else is a side effect. You should be healthier after the classes than you were before (unless you want to get some medals on Olympics). So the summary. I strongly DO NOT recommend this place. Or, if you visit it, please be very careful and skeptical. read more

South Austin Gym is a REAL south Austin gym. It's a real gym, and it has that Austin friendliness and straightforwardness. It's well equipped, clean and easy in and out. My husband and daughter use it for a basic workout gym. I took the boxing kickstart session (totally worth the reasonable price) and I'm going to be using it for the boxing classes and basic gym. Cade, a young man with a gift for teaching, did my personal kickstart session, and I had such a great time, and FELT LIKE I LEARNED SO MUCH IN ONE HOUR. He was very realistic, but encouraging in a sincere way. I'm a sixty year old lady who hasn't moved much in the past couple of years, and the whole attitude at the gym is you can do this if you put some time in on it. It's a very inclusive place. Randy, the coach, told me there is a 70 year old lady who can stand on a yoga ball and box. She's been coming there for years. The prices are very competitive with other gyms. This isn't one of those gyms that values selling memberships above what they are prepared to offer you. If you are looking for a real gym, check them out. Just renewed for my second yearly membership at SAG and thought it was time to leave my thoughts. This is the anti-LIFETIME Fitness gym and that is why I love it. I work out early in the morning usually and often have the gym to myself. No one in the gym is judging others and nobody seems to be just chatting it up. This isn't a hang out spot, it's a place to sweat it out and get work done. The membership prices cannot be beat and I know I am getting my money's worth. Why waste your money paying for an in-house juice bar or all day Zumba classes? This is no frills working out which eliminates unnecessary distractions and lets you focus on your progress. There was this lady I guess a Mauy Thai coach for the females here named May Sun, she made this such a terrible and disappointing experience for me. I have trained all over the Country in top Mma gyms/boxing gyms as well....with the best of the best fighters. Not being from Texas I was excited and looking for a gym to get back into, but I got a day pass to come here. We were quiet and respectful kept to ourselves and we were just looking to get a good workout in and back into training a bit, but we started hitting the heavy bags in the corner then May Sun came over to us and asked us "who the f*** we were"? We just mentioned we had permission to workout and were new to the gym she then told us we looked like idiots on the floor and to get the F*** off of her floor. She went over to every employee trying to get us kicked out...They were all staring at us and it was very strange and uncomfortable....being an undefeated Mma fighter...To be swore at and treated in such a way for just simply hitting the bag was very shocking. I didn't want to disrespect anyone or cause a scene over this unprofessional and egotistical employee May Sun showed herself to be....But after this gym experience I had...I feel compelled to make sure my friends and co workers and all the other people who told me they wanted to join this gym, I will assure them not to....no one should ever be treated and disrespected the way that May Sun lady treated us. read more

Good, basic, CHEAP gym. I don't do the classes because I never know what my schedule will be. Folks seem to be happy with them, but I just wanted a place to do cardio when it is cold/wet outside and some weights and machines. The price is the best I found anywhere and it does the job. Saw a review saying no stairmasters, and not sure if they are new, but I use them there (there are 3 of them). There isn't a ton of equipment, but I've never seen this placed packed and never had to wait for a machine, ever. It is a no nonsense gym. Not a lot of mirrors, bells, or whistles, but it has what you need for less than anyone else, and they don't bug you about adding on services or classes. Tough to beat. As a bonus, they actually play good music at a reasonable volume (my mp3 crapped out and I haven't missed it) and the bathroom is clean and nice. read more

This is a review regarding their billing process. If you get caught up in reoccurring payments you have to write your cancellation request to a 3rd party payment processing company out of Colorado. I'd called the gym to cancel initially who never informed me of that. Next, ASF, who never informed me either. Here I am 6 months and $600 later writing my cancellation thanks to the assistance of Allison. Seems like a scam to squeeze every penny out of you they can. Great gym though. read more
