I have had the best experience working out here. It started with a trial class, as most studios do, and it instantly felt like a fit and I signed up for membership. I liked that each workout is a bit different (unlike OT), with personal attention given by the coaches to form (unlike F45), while building strength in similar muscles groups to get fit over time. It also rotates in format with a good mix of resistance, strength, HIIT, cardio. It's usually 20-30 people in a class and you feel part of a community - other members are friendly and supportive of you need it, but also focused on their goals and not in your way of you prefer that. The place has easy free parking which makes the logistics easy and lockers/cubbies. They provide clean sweat towels (actually clean). And the team is highly responsive on phone/ message - I've never had issues reaching someone if I've needed to. read more

The coaches here are great but the workouts and the program are underwhelming. I tried BFT out for a month and it was fun but i feel like their programming is just lazy. it's 8-10 week "progression" where you do the exact same exercises week after week. the heart rate part doesn't make sense most of the time. also, management and the GM are basically just crooks. by signing up for one month, you have to pay for 2 months. they have a 30 day notice which makes it impossible to only just try out the gym for a month. they're brand new to austin. instead of trying to build a community, they're just trying to make as much money as possible, even if it means screwing over ex members and trapping them in another month of pay. learn from my mistake, save your money and avoid getting trapped in their bogus pay cycle. if you just want to try this place out like i did, it's not worth it oh- ps: if you see any 5 star ratings for this place on google or yelp, it's because they held a contest. rate 5 stars, and other tasks and be entered in a raffle to win free merch. read more

TLDR: The best group fitness gym in Austin for progressive strength training with an enthusiastic training team and an energized, supportive member community. In a fitness-first town like Austin it seems like you can't go a few blocks without running into a group fitness gym - the training methodologies varying greatly but ultimately having a focus on cardio. I have always enjoyed group fitness but was looking for something focused on building strength while developing cardiovascular fitness and overall athleticism, and BFT South Congress offers exactly that. There is a heavy emphasis on keeping track of your cardiovascular and strength progress at BFT South Congress. They utilize heart rate training/monitoring as an integral part of every session (emphasis on going up, down, or maintaining specific target rates depending on where you are in the workout) and the staff at BFT South Congress has loaned out monitors to members and newcomers who may not have their own so that they can take full advantage of class (such as myself the first time I visited). Progressive strength development is also an integral part of BFT - you can opt in to testing for your 5-rep max on a series of fundamental strength movements (such as deadlift, back squat, military press, etc) so that the weights you use during class are appropriate to your personal strength growth. During each multi-week training block certain of these movements will reappear throughout the block with variation on weight lifted and reps (generally fewer reps each week but heavier weight) to encourage further strength development. And of course the weight training equipment used in BFT is legitimate stuff - you don't see or use equipment like trap bars or power racks in other group fitness franchises. The real strength of BFT South Congress in particular is the burgeoning community of staff and members it has developed. Although consisting of people of vastly different fitness experience and levels (from complete newbies to longtime athletes) everyone you meet tends to be extremely enthusiastic about pushing themselves and each other to perform at their very best. Camaraderie is the norm and not the exception at BFT South Congress: at each class you will typically be grouped into pairs or triples, and work/rest during sets is typically designed to utilize this format to full advantage such as "You-Go-I-Go" where the resting partner will also spot for the active partner. It feels safer and more reassuring to push yourself to max weights and effort when you know you have someone always watching your back and encouraging you. And the coaches are no slouch either. There are always two or three of them at each class but you never see them up front just barking generic encouragements like at many other fitness studios - there are constantly roaming to spot you, provide individual instruction/feedback on form, or even flat out work a set with you to push you ahead. This studio is incredible. The coaches are a great group of friendly and knowledgeable people with professional physical therapy and physical training backgrounds. The classes are a great mix of cardio and strength. Unlike other places where I would get injured taking 20+ classes a month, BFT is truly sustainable. The gym also includes various technology to track your progress including multiple apps and free evolt body scans. Heart rate monitor is free for classes but if you purchase one to keep, you can track even more info. The two negative reviews here are: 1. Critical of a policy that all major studios maintain (I have personal experience with a similar 30 day cancellation policy at CorePower. OrangeTheory & F45 are also same) . This gentleman is attacking the studio because he himself forgot to read the policy... His critique of the program is also odd. Some classes change week to week and others are intentionally the same so that you increase weight or increase intensity at a lower heart rate. I can attest personally that I've seen improvements in my strength, ability to run, and even play pickleball better! 2. Critical of the franchising model in general... this gym has ownership and management that is in the studio every day and personally knows everyone's name. They were form focused over number of reps vs intensity which is very different than other group classes I have done. I don't agree with the previous review, and considering the gym wasn't even open when she posted the review, I'm assuming she was just annoyed by the gym taking time to open. It's not really their fault. I've done 3 sessions with them so far and love it! I was a member in Singapore, and now coming to the Austin spot feels just as good. The workouts mix it up with HIIT, functional moves, and strength exercises, keeping things exciting for everyone.
