    Vets visit from September 8th.
    Amy J.

Brought our newly adopted dog from the shelter here for a routine checkup office visit. Also to inquire about some redness on her skin. 3 visits later. 750$ later no office visits were waved. I was told repeatedly my dog has fleas. She does not have fleas. I suggest looking for a new veterinarian. I will be doing that today. In addition to this review. How is this not the same problem. When they gave the EXACT SAME treatment.

Blossom, the rescue pup I brought in who was dumped at the shelter in horrible condition.

I am the rescue director for The Forgotten Dog Foundation, a well established dog rescue here in Los Angeles. I have been in rescue for almost 13 years now and have lived in Torrance my whole life. Since our rescue is mainly based in Santa Monica, we usually use vets in that area, but since I am in the South Bay and take in a bulk of our rescue dogs, I have been searching for a reputable vet here that also gives us a rescue discount. This year has been extremely hard on rescues, because vets are very busy nowadays, we can't always get dogs in right away and when we do we are usually charged a "new walk in" fee. I recently rescued a little maltipoo that was dumped at the shelter in horrible condition and I could see she had a horrible skin and ear infection. There wasn't one vet, including our regular vets, that could get her in right away. The earliest appointment was 6 days away. I didn't want her suffering in discomfort, so I took a chance and googled "South Bay Vets," and low and behold I found South Bay Veterinary Care. I called them expecting that they could not offer a rescue discount, but they did! I then expected to not be able to get in till at least a few days, and they got me in the next day. At our appointment, I was greeted in such a friendly way by a tech who was very caring with my rescue pup. She even saw that I was fanning myself from the heat while I waited in my car and brought me a water bottle which I thought was so kind. The vet calls you from inside while you wait in your car (because of Covid) and goes over everything. I have been to many vets over the years, and I have to say that Dr. Miyashiro is VERY thorough. I know this because I brought in my rescue pup's file of all her records and procedures she has had done, and I could tell that the doctor looked over everything in that file and had a good idea of her history. She was never pushy with having anything done and made very good suggestions. They brought my rescue pup out and she was happy and wagging her tail which means they treated her very well in there. They even did a complimentary nail trim and gave me a complimentary dose of flea meds for her. What vet does that nowadays? The prices were very good compared to other vets I have been to and even without a rescue discount I can see that they offer very good pricing. I am so happy I found South Bay Veterinary Care and will be bringing all my pups here, including my own! Thank you Dr. Miyashiro and staff! You guys are all so amazing!

My 9 week pup was diagnosed with parvo from a urgent care clinic. They practically wanted 4,600 to treat and that was a "estimate". I was so upset crying thinking is this end? That's almost like 2 House payments for me. I couldn't give up so I started to Yelp around my area and SBVC came up.I called and they squeezed us in that same day long story short they saved our fur baby, without leaving me with a worry on how am I a going to afford this. The staff was caring and informative and so was Dr. Miyashiro. I found our forever vet and i will be telling everyone I know where to go.

Harley's first vet appointment. Look at my beautiful girl...

I bring my daughter, Harley, to this location. Thus far, I am very pleased. I am very involved in anything that is Harley related, and I want to make sure she gets good service and care. I researched vets shortly after I adopted her and decided to bring her in. I hope to keep bringing her to this location, as she doesn't seem stressed out or upset after leaving. Also, I feel that I can relay any questions or concerns, and they are acknowledged and answered. Because of Harley's diagnosis, I need someone that will not disregard or play down my concerns, so this attentiveness is very much appreciated. I recommend you make an appointment. I am tech savvy, and I dislike talking on the phone, so I appreciate their electronic communication. They send you emails to confirm your appointment, which I think is a great tool. After Harley received her last shot, the office emailed me to check in on how she was doing. I was so happy! Harley means the world to me, so anybody that cares about Harley has a good mark in my book. Again, electronic communication is great- it's quick and non-intrusive. I am one of those cat mom's that personificates human emotions and facial expressions onto animals, and Harley is no exception. I monitor her behavior and facial expressions (yes, she has them) immediately after in the car and when we get home. If Harley is happy, then I am happy. Thank you for caring about my daughter, Harley.

Recognizing that time was of the essence, Dr. Kim acted quickly and recommended admitting Thurston for several days of IV antibiotics and other supportive treatments. After his hospitalization, Dr. Kim developed a comprehensive treatment plan and instructed me to return with Thurston for a follow-up visit five days later. His chest X-rays showed significant improvement compared to those taken just five days earlier. Pneumonia requires close monitoring and multiple follow-up visits during recovery. Throughout the process, Dr. Kim has been clear, thorough, and reassuring about the next steps. Thurston is doing much better. I am extremely grateful to Dr. Kim and her kind, compassionate staff for helping my dog--and me--through such a stressful and frightening time.

On July 31, 2026, I brought my 6-year-old French Bulldog, Kian, to Económico Animal Hospital in…read moreGardena for what appeared to be a hot spot/moist dermatitis on the back of his neck. I walked in with my dog alive, alert, and walking normally. Less than an hour after leaving this hospital, my dog was dead. I am sharing this because other pet owners, especially owners of French Bulldogs and other brachycephalic dogs, deserve to know what happened and ask questions. According to Kian's medical records, we arrived around 5:47 PM. He weighed 28.4 lbs, his temperature was 100.3°F, and he was documented as BAR (bright, alert and responsive). His heart and lungs were documented as normal. His records also specifically noted BOAS (Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome), stenotic nares, and an elongated soft palate. Kian had previously had a similar skin infection near his tail treated without sedation, so I never imagined a visit for a neck sore would end this way. At 6:17 PM, Kian was given Zenalpha (dexmedetomidine) IM for sedation. His neck was shaved and cleaned, and he received Polyflex (antibiotic) and Kenalog (steroid) injections. At approximately 6:30 PM, he was given atipamezole to reverse the sedation. His records list a temperature of 101.2°F, pulse 112, respiratory rate 36, and BAR. Approximately EIGHT MINUTES later, around 6:38 PM, Kian was released to me wearing an Elizabethan collar/cone. I was told he had done well and might be sleepy. The moment we got into the car, I knew something was wrong. This was not my normal Kian. He appeared scared, extremely restless and uncomfortable, repeatedly fighting the cone and unable to settle. Only about SIX MINUTES after leaving the hospital, around 6:44 PM, Kian suddenly had diarrhea. I got him out of the car. He then vomited green fluid and collapsed. Everything happened incredibly fast. We immediately rushed him to ACCESS Emergency Hospital. He was still warm when we arrived. They intubated him, performed CPR and advanced life-support measures, but they could not bring him back. Kian died after walking into this hospital less than an hour earlier for a skin infection. One of my biggest concerns is how quickly he was discharged after receiving reversal medication, particularly because he was a French Bulldog with BOAS documented in his medical record. I have also been unable to find documentation of additional post-reversal vital signs after the 6:30 PM set or a recovery monitoring sheet showing things such as oxygen saturation or blood pressure before he was released. I am also concerned about the cone. A subsequent veterinary note discussed the possibility that an Elizabethan collar could have increased respiratory effort in a dog with BOAS and potentially contributed to upper-airway obstruction and cardiopulmonary collapse. This is NOT a confirmed cause of Kian's death. Without definitive testing, we may never know exactly what happened, but it is one of the possibilities raised afterward. I still have serious questions: Why was sedation necessary for this procedure when his BOAS was documented? Was I adequately informed of the additional sedation risks associated with his airway disease? Why was he discharged approximately eight minutes after reversal? What recovery monitoring was performed before discharge? Why was he sent home wearing a cone so soon after sedation despite his documented airway issues? Could the medications, airway disease, cone, short recovery period, or a combination of factors have contributed to his collapse? I understand complications can happen in veterinary medicine, and I am not claiming to know the exact medical cause of Kian's death. What I DO know is that I brought my beloved dog in alive, responsive and walking normally for treatment of a skin infection. He was sedated, reversed, treated and released. Within minutes of leaving, he developed diarrhea, vomited, collapsed and died. Kian wasn't "just a dog." He was my family and my emotional support for six years. He was there through the deaths of both my parents, the births of my two daughters, and the hardest moments of my life. When I cried, Kian came running and climbed into my lap. He followed me everywhere. My daughters lost their dog, and I lost my best friend. I am sharing Kian's story so other owners know to ask detailed questions about sedation, airway risks, recovery monitoring, reversal medications and cones before taking their pet home. I will spend the rest of my life wondering how I took Kian to the vet for a skin infection and came home without him. We loved you so much, Kian. You deserved to come home with us.

This is a review I didn't expect to be making and am very disappointed by my experience here today…read more First off, I just want to say, I've had really great experiences with the vet techs/staff. I've also had an okay experience with the vet. I'm not exactly sure what happened tonight, but just pure disorganization for sure. I first came here last Monday. My dog had some sort of large wound and raised bump on his paw. It wouldn't go away. My schedule is pretty inflexible so it's hard to find a vet that sees pets after normal business hours and doesn't charge an emergency fee. I stumbled upon HQPC on Yelp and it had great reviews. I called and was able to get a same day appointment. I spoke to Jay at that time and she was lovely. I came in at my appointment time, was seen right away and was helped by Angel and another vet tech or employee. I didn't get her name but she has tattoos. Both her and Angel were so kind and lovely. Dr. Amini was really helpful too! I left ready to leave a 5 star review, but just didn't have the time to. I came back today (Monday) as my pup wasn't really improving. I was happy to come back since I had such a great experience last week. I made a same day appointment at 7:45pm. I arrived 5 minutes late (oops), though that didn't even matter. I waited about 25 min in the waiting room. Once we got checked in, I waited another 25 minutes in the medical room. Dr. Amini came in for approximately 3 minutes, said he wanted to do a cytology and a vet tech will be in to help me. Great! Someone came in to help me sign the forms for the $500 bill. And then I waited and waited for another 25 minutes. Theres also some time unaccounted for so I honestly probably underestimated the time too. But I was here about 1.5 hours, if not more. Needless to say, I left. Michelle, who helped me out in the front to check out was very kind and understanding. She explained that Dr. Amini was running behind due to a surgery. I totally understand and please please triage and put more urgent pets before mine! But there was no communication of this at all. Just waiting and waiting. Dr. Amini was literally only in the room with us for 3 minutes. Michelle said she wouldn't charge me, which was nice. But I wasted almost 2 hours and nothing was done with my pup. I'm overall, just really disappointed with my experience.

Earlier that day, he had already been seen by my regular veterinarian, where bloodwork was done. Since they couldn't determine the cause of his illness, they recommended I take him to an urgent care facility. The only reason they referred me was because they did not have the equipment to perform X-rays or an ultrasound. They had already done everything they could at their clinic and wanted my dog to receive the advanced imaging he needed. When I arrived around 12:00 PM, the receptionist told me the wait would be about two hours. I completely understood because it's an urgent care, and I appreciated that they took my dog into the treatment area. I assumed he would at least receive IV fluids to keep him hydrated while we waited, especially because I specifically told the receptionist he wasn't eating, was weak, and needed an IV. I was willing to pay for whatever treatment he needed. As the hours passed, I repeatedly asked for updates. Around 3:00 PM, then again at 5:00 PM, I was told my dog was doing fine and that I would be seen soon. Finally, at about 7:00 PM, we were taken into an exam room. The veterinarian came in and immediately asked what was wrong with my dog. I was surprised because it seemed she hadn't been briefed on why we were there. I had to explain everything from the beginning while feeling overwhelmed after waiting seven hours. When I asked if my dog had been receiving IV fluids during that time, I was shocked to learn that he had not received any IV treatment at all. That was extremely upsetting because I believed he was at least being kept hydrated while waiting. After briefly reviewing the bloodwork from my regular veterinarian, the doctor told me my dog "might have leukemia (CANCER)" before performing any imaging, such as X-rays or an ultrasound. Hearing that was heartbreaking. She then recommended additional testing, including more bloodwork, X-rays, an ultrasound, and other diagnostics, with an estimated cost of around $12,000 just to determine what was wrong. I understand that diagnostics are important and that emergency veterinary medicine is expensive. However, after the lack of communication, the seven-hour wait without IV fluids, and hearing such a serious possibility mentioned before additional testing was done, I no longer felt confident continuing care there. I decided to take my dog home. Over the next two days, I focused on keeping him hydrated, monitored him closely, gently massaged his abdomen, and followed supportive care at home. Thankfully, he eventually passed a large mango pit in his stool. Once it came out, he quickly improved and made a full recovery. He did not have cancer. What scares me the most is thinking about how many pet owners may feel pressured into making heartbreaking decisions because of an initial possible diagnosis or because they simply can't afford the recommended costs. I kept thinking that could have been me. If I had accepted that my dog might have cancer without seeking another opinion or waiting for additional answers, I might have made a decision I would have regretted forever. Thankfully, in my dog's case, that wasn't what was wrong. Looking back, I understand that an X-ray may have helped identify the obstruction, and that is exactly why my regular veterinarian referred me there--they did not have the equipment to perform those tests. However, my experience left me feeling that communication was poor, my concerns were not taken seriously, and my dog waited far too long without the supportive care I believed he would receive. This was my personal experience, and unfortunately, I cannot recommend this facility based on how my dog and I were treated. I truly hope no other family has to go through what we experienced.

Overall, very private equity pricing- nothing to do with the pets getting better service. I say try to go anywhere else but modern animal. They also just lack the professionalism- instead of saying upfront it's basically 3500 for each cat, they said it was 800 and then added bunch of stuff later on after i put my cats to sleep on gaba. Also hated the girl who tried to hide the pricing saying it was in the best interest for the cats, so i asked again and they finally showed me. They also charge for things they may use- so why not just charge after you are sure you used them. also told the doctor multiple times i can go to the VA to get his heart checked out but instead of that they said it was fine but wanted to run some extra test not covered by insurance in their office after i repeatedly told them i can take him to the va for get it cleared. this is horrible business model and should not be supported out of principle. this business model would mean less animals are rescued just for private equity pockets to get richer. Also the manager tried to poor shame cos i was appalled at the pricing and wanted to shop around and hello i did find a vet that charges 800 for full sleep and teeth cleaning. hallelujah. also no offense but 300 for rabies shot is also insane.
