This updated review has nothing to do with the care my animals have received from the doctors at this clinic, it has everything to do with the lack of care and compassion I was treated with when my dog passed away recently. Many errors occurred in how this was handled, I understand that things happen but when I am expressing my frustration over the miss-information and miss-handling of my dogs remains (my dog that had been a patient there for 13 years), I expect more than "I don't know what you want me to say I have already apologized". I tried to handle this off-line with the business owners and received zero response. What a sad way to handle a relationship that has spanned over 20+ years. read more

Top notch. Seamless. Professional. Kind. All these words and more come to mind when I think of my experiences at South Bay Veterinary Group - South End. We have used the Charles Street Animal Clinic (also part of SBVG) for 4 years for routine check up and care of our two dogs. We've always had a positive experience there, on and on yet another (positive) visit recently, we found out that Fido #1 needed to get surgery on a quickly developed aural hematoma (sounds a lot worse than it is!). He would need to go to the Tremont Street location for the surgery. They had an appointment for him the very next day and we dropped him off before 9 am as requested. The check in process was quick and easy, they explained the time frame and gave us a fair estimate of the expected cost. We were to pick him up after 5 pm that day. After anxiously waiting all day we finally got our call around 3 pm and everything had gone perfectly to plan and our little guy would be ready after 5 pm. Smiles! Dr. Wosko left a wonderful message explaining how the procedure went, what the next steps would be, what to expect, etc. (I missed the call which is why he left a message). Our discharge was smooth and easy as well (although the walk home not so much with a drugged-up, bloody dog with an Elizabethan collar around his neck!) and the actual charge ended up being a little less than estimated - bonus! We were given all medications and instruction needed, and had 2 follow up visits since then, as well as a follow up call half way thorough the recovery period to make sure everything was okay. They've called to confirm/remind us of each appointment and the staff has been SO friendly and helpful on all counts, I have absolutely nothing bad to say! We are 110 % satisfied; SBVG had really done an amazing job medically as well - his ear healed wonderfully, he is now back to happy and healthy! Dr. Wosko was extremely empathetic and knowledgeable from start to finish as well - he is well skilled and clearly engaged in what he does and has an excellent bedside manner. As a result, I did not have confidence in the practice to do even the simplest of things for my puppy. This led me to search for another vet in the area and I am so glad that I did. Dr. Bower is an absolutely wonderful and caring Vet. She immediately diagnosed an issue in my pup that was previously missed. I'm going to join in the praises of Dr. Constantino. I requested him after reading all the reviews here and he lived up to the reputation. I had previously taken my cats here and not had a bad experience, but it wasn't overwhelmingly awesome, either. This time Husband and I took both our cats to South Bay at the same time. They were unhappy, to say the least. Especially since we decided we'd walk them to the office in their respective carriers. You could hear the little turds screeching their fool heads off for blocks around. They had an amazing call and answer thing going on. I imagine it was something like: Seamus: Oberon, you there? Oberon: Yes! Seamus, you there? Seamus: Oberon, are you still there? Oberon: Yes! Are you? Repeat ad infinitum Sorry. Back on topic. We get to the vet and only have a short wait before we see the Doc. The nice young woman at the front desk asked if we had stool samples. Uuuuuhhhhh. No. Who thinks of bringing a ziploc full of kitty poo? Anyway- we take Oberon out first. Turns out he's not fat! Nor does he have kitty down syndrome (suck it, people that come to my house and make fun of my kitties). And, then the weirdest of the weird happens. He starts purring. Yep. Dr. Constantino actually got a cat in a vet exam room to purr. THAT is freakin' crazy. Seamus was up next. He's usually the bad kitty of the bunch. Although a little squirmier than his older bro, he did quite well. No scratching, no biting- they both took their shots and nose drops with minimal fuss. They even got a little teeth cleaning and nail clipping since they weren't being bad kitties. What I was most happy about was that Dr. Constantino was a cat person. So many vets I've gone to seem to hate them. I actually had a vet get pissed when Oberon had a urinary tract infection and he peed on her. Listen lady, he's been peeing on me the whole time we were in the waiting room, if you can't handle a little cat urine maybe you should re-think your career choice. That's on par with a pediatrician getting ticked when a kid pukes in his office. I could not have been happier with the visit. Dr. Constantino was attentive, answered my questions, and handled both cats with care. And, I was pleased with their pricing- both cats cost $152 for their routine check-up, rabies and distemper included. After the service we got it felt like a bargain. read more

I can't stay enough great things about this place. I have had good experiences with all the doctors --i also agree about Dr Constantino, he's got a very caring, nurturing manner and is always ready to answers questions and open to your thoughts, concerns, etc. The best thing about South Bay? I've had multiple animals cared for by this clinic for years. Therefore I've spent thousands of dollars here. I just asked for some anti anxiety meds, and was told to come in for an expensive unnecessary testing. This doctor would rather the dog be in pain than give a prescription to ease anxiety. They don't care about the pet, only the money- I'll never be back And no one else should Animal abusing veterinarians are awful!!! read more

The doctors here are great, the techs are fabulous, the office is impeccable and very "pet friendly" - it's the first vet office that I've ever been in where the pets don't look and act nervous. They are really good with anxious pet owners and know how to calm you right down and put your pet's situation in perspective. I especially like how the techs in the front know so much about the foods, medications and tests being done - so if you call and can't speak right away to a vet you still are talking to someone with a lot of knowledge and expertise. The hours are really good - I love the early morning and Saturday appointments. I definitely trust these people with my dog - which is a HUGE compliment! read more

I was looking for a new vet because Angell Animal Medical Center, although extremely nice, was waaaay expensive for me and my two dogs. As in, I think most of my fees were going to pay for those fancy flat-screen TVs in the gigantic lobby rather than the actual vaccines for the dogs. So, upon a recommendation from a friend, I took my dog here to South Bay Vet Group, and am happy to say that we had a great experience. It seems that a lot has changed here in the past few years since the reviewers who had bad experiences. I called on Monday and was able to get an appt. on Wednesday. Our vet, Dr. MacDonald, was friendly and cheerful. I also overheard another vet with another client (because the place is TINY), and although the client was being difficult and kind of argumentative, the vet stayed polite and resolved the problem. I had brought my dog in because of a weirdo growth on his tongue that I was worried might be cancer. Dr. MacDonald was able to tell me immediately that it was just a wart (apparently it's not uncommon for young dogs to get....tongue warts?!?!). It didn't even need any treatment because they usually go away on their own. The best part - at Angell Animal Medical Center it cost me $80 just for a basic examination. Here it was only $55. I think we've found a new vet for both dogs! read more

I just moved to Boston a few months ago with my English Bulldog. He has many health issues, but the worst are his allergies that appeared to get much worse when we moved here in the spring. I had looked up Dr. Constantino online and found out he was recommended, and he did not disappoint! He was extremely knowledgeable and friendly, but the best part was how he seemed very interested in helping not only my dog, but my wallet! I've never had a vet that didn't try to charge me for everything. He understood that with a dog that is constantly sick, I already had some things around and no need to purchase new shampoo for $25, or ear cleaner for $15 when I have 3 bottles at home. This impressed me so much that next time I won't have to worry about going to the vet and having to spend money on unnecessary things. The front desk staff was friendly also and didn't have any issues when I handed them my dog's 20 page medical history for his new chart. Highly recommended! read more

My 4 dogs have been seeing Dr. Constantino forever (our oldest dog is almost 14). I can't say enough good things about him and recommend him to anyone I meet that is looking for a professional, intelligent and kind doctor. I've been living in the South End for 10+ years... when I arrived I had 2 older dogs that were cared for by the staff at South Bay. Both have since died and I cannot express my gratitude enough to the staff and especially Dr. Julia Jenkins. Both dogs were treated wonderfully and loved to visit the Vet, although the treats didn't hurt. Additionally, after they died, the practice made a donation in their name. I now have a rescued dog from the Carolinas who is shy and skittish, but is so well cared for at South Bay that she doesn't mind her visits. I think they are wonderful! read more

Love this place! Went for the first time last night. My dog is very skiddish and was abused by his previous owners. The staff was very warm and friendly and made Oliver feel right at home. Dr. MacDonald was super nice! She put Oliver right at ease and gave him treats and did her duty. I was probably more nervous than Oliver but we both left happy. They took the time to answer ALL of my questions and believe me I had a lot. They were wonderful!!! read more

While I don't personally have a cat, I often take care of a friend of mine's cat. One day he woke up with some sort of a stomach issue and my friend asked me to take him to South Bay. South Bay was fantastic and willing to work around my schedule. This was incredibly helpful. Not knowing that much about cats myself, they were also patient when I picked him up and answered all my questions. The next day when he still wasn't back to his normal, happy self they were happy to answer some questions over the phone and offer to let me come back in. What I (and my friend) really appreciated was that while the cat was there, South Bay noticed it was right around for his yearly checkup. Rather then having us come back again (and pay for another dr's visit) they just went ahead with his yearly maintenance (nail clipping, vaccines, checkups). I know my friend really appreciated saving that money. read more

Very mixed experiences for us here. At first, it was awful. The vets had zero bedside manner and it appeared that they couldn't stand to be around the animals. Not to mention waiting multiple times for more than a half hour (once it was 2+ hours) even though we had an appointment. We've been to both the South End and Beacon Hill locations. I personally prefer the South End over Beacon Hill, but there's really no obvious reason for this - they are both equidistant for walking from our home, and both places have offered both good and less than good experiences. Lately, however, South Bay Vet is moving up! The past 2 times we were there, the vets (same ones that we saw in the beginning) have been very friendly, took the time to examine our dog and answer questions, and called back to follow up on any outstanding issues. The techs that work up front have always been fantastic - so friendly. The waiting room is small and tough if you're there for a while, but the friendly faces of both the techs and other patients and owners make up for it. read more

We brought our cat here for several years when we lived in Boston. It was convenient that they offered appointments on Saturdays. Dr. Jenkins was very sweet with our anxious cat, did a thorough exam, and spent ample time talking with us and answering our questions. When we were worried about our cat who got really stressed out after our move from Boston, we called her to see if she had advice on what to do. She spent a fair bit of time with us on the phone trying to understand his behavioral changes and give us tips to get him to eat and drink regularly. We're sad to leave her care. read more

Just moved back to the neighborhood and needed to bring my kitty for an annual check up. I was a bit nervous because she didn't do well last year (lots of hissing, scratching and moaning!). I called South Bay the day before our appointment this year and warned them that her previous vet asked me to give her a "kitty tranquilizer" next time I brought her in. The staff at South Bay listened to my concerns and decided we should try to bring her in undrugged, especially because Dr. Constantino is very good with cats. The day of the appointment we had a very short wait in the waiting area (thank goodness it was a short wait. there was another client who did not leash her very hyperactive yellow lab, and who succeeded in antagonizing the already very nervous kitty sitting in her crate next to me). We went right in to see Dr. Constantino, and he was amazing. My cat wasn't perfect (some hissing and moaning, for which I entirely blame the yellow lab), but Dr. Constantino kept his voice calm and handled my cat very gently and remained in control of her the entire time (not the case at the previous vet's!). I had total confidence in him, especially when he managed to give her a couple of shots without having her jump off the table! The staff was professional and caring. In the interest of full disclosure, this review is certainly sour grapes. We lived in the South End for 9 years with a dog for 8 of them and from the beginning of our beloved Charlie's life we took him to South Bay. They were great for the most part (Dr Constantino) and never had issues. That is until last year when my wife brought him in with a suspicious lump on his anus. The doctor said it was nothing and unless it bothers him its not worth it to remove. Well fast forward a year, my wife and I moved to the South Shore and took Charlie for his first vet visit at South Coastal in Weymouth just yesterday. They immediately asked what that was and noted that it most likely is a mast cell tumor. Upon further research on my end, the symptoms are, and have always been so blatantly obvious as to lead to that conclusion. My dog goes into surgery in 1 hour to see how invasive the tumor has become which will likely decide his fate. I am enraged that this wasn't spotted especially in a Puggle, where these types of tumors are common. Unfortunately there is nothing I can do to save my little man's life, but a post regarding the negligence from South Bay Veterinary will have to do. If this had been removed when we first took him in over a year ago to see Dr Constantino then his chances of survival would be much higher. I am in tears as I write this and can't wait to snuggle my Chunk (nickname) just a few more times before, what I fear will be the end, comes....and comes way too soon. He would (hopefully will) be 8 years old in 2 short weeks. I just don't understand why Dr C would even take the chance? The location and appearance of the growth should have been serious red flags for a practicing vet. read more

I'll preface this by saying that South Bay may be great for cats or small dogs, but our experience was with 2 big dogs: a pit bull mix and a golden retriever puppy. The front desk staff and techs were very pleasant, but this 3-star review is for some other events. (1) We brought in our muzzled pitbull (totally friendly, but for others comfort), and he was made to wait in a back room and we were made very uncomfortable the whole time we were there. Not a huge deal since we are used to the anti-pitbull type, but not something I would have expected in a vets office. (2) After bringing our puppy to his first appointment, the vet made a very big deal about a heart murmur. Note, I was the one who brought this heart murmur up to him since the breeder told me about a faint murmur their vet had heard the week before (probably shouldn't have done this). My research showed that this is very common and to give it a few months since most correct themselves, but the vet was very quick to insist on a EKG... especially knowing the breeder or pet insurance would cover it. Anyways, I understand he had well intentions, but it sounded very sales-y especially the fact he didn't want to wait. He got me all in a panic about it and it turned out this huge heart mummer wasn't heard a month later.. and hasn't been heard since! (3) Final straw was when I took our puppy back when he was about 4 months. The vet offered a treat and he jumped up and grabbed it... and nipped her hand and her "new brooks brothers shirt" in the process (I thought it was really weird she pointed that out). He was about to start puppy kindergarten and he is just a 4 month old golden retriever! That can't be too surprising. After reading the vet write-up, she made him sound like a giant rabid animal. Anyways, too many times I felt uncomfortable in my few visits there. Maybe South Bay is better for cats or small dogs, but I switched to Boston Veterinary Care at the ARL and have had great experience thus far! They're more reasonably priced and also love pit-bulls =) read more

I have had two terrible experiences with the South Bay Veterinary Group - one of which, almost lost me my dog. My overall summary is the following: South Bay is more expensive but not more skilled. South Bay can most likely handle routine vaccinations, such as rabies. However, for more serious concerns regarding your animal or spay surgeries, I cannot recommend this clinic. During my dog's spay surgery in 2009, a vet at the clinic did not properly tie the internal suture correctly causing my dog to bleed internally. This was 100% her mistake, and she admitted it. My dog was transferred to Angell Hospital where she received a blood transfusion and survived. Most recently, in Sep 2010, I brought my dog in to see, Dr. Costantino, a different vet at South Bay, because she had lost her appetite, vomited, and was shaky. Dr. Costantino unfortunately treated me as an overprotective pet owner and verbally expressed that he was unconcerned with my dog's behavior. He believed she was just reacting to a change in diet. This 10-15 minute trip cost me $75. Unfortunately, later in the week my dog suffered from a vestibular attack that resembled a seizure. Her condition worsened. Angell Hospital has again come to the rescue over the past two months. They diagnosed her with a very serious brain disease that she is now being treated for. In summary, I find the South Bay Veterinary Group to be arrogant and not accomplished enough in their field to charge as much as they do. I hope this honest account helps some of you. I can refer you to other vets if you need a suggestion. read more

We have been taking our dog here for the last five years. The entire team is fantastic. It can sometimes be hard to get a same- or next-day appointment, but when it's serious enough they will always hustle to try to make it work. Tip: the lobby/waiting area is very small. If your dog (like mine) gets anxious around other animals, be ready to have him/her sit in your lap or something similar. Just as at any vet there is often a wait once you arrive so it's a certainty that your pet will be nose-to-nose with somebody else! read more

I got my cat in 2000 when I was in college and all the cool kids were getting pets. He's a monster of a cat, who acts like a dog, who loves to jump up on the bed at 4:00am and scream in your face for no reason. Two years ago I asked my mom to take the Browcat (a.k.a. Brower, Ben, shithead, etc.) because Eric was moving in with me and our 350SF place on Marlborough St couldn't fit the three of us. She happily took him and he roamed the wilderness of Milford, MA. Last week he disappeared for two days. We all thought the worst. He finally showed up a little battered with a huge chunk taken out of his behind. My mom brought him to the local vet, got him stapled up, and was told he had to be quarantined for 45 days so she asked me to keep him in Boston to make sure he didn't escape the Milford house. Wow, that's a lot of backstory. Anyway, I had to get his staples removed 7 days after the surgery in Milford. I called South Bay on Tuesday and they were able to squeeze me into an appointment today (Friday) on my lunch break at 12:30pm. I waited about 15 minutes after the appt time to be seen, but again, they did me a favor squeezing me in. I met with the doctor and she immediately put my cat at ease. She gave him a checkup (which they have to do with all new patients) and told me he was in great shape. Within 30 seconds the staples were removed (all with very delicate hands and a great demeanor towards me), and she gave me a few tips on how to get him to stop screaming at night. I was in and out of the office within a half hour and the whole thing only cost me $58. That's fantastic. If we decided to keep the cat in the city I'll have no problem taking him here for everything he needs. I'd recommend them in a heartbeat. read more

This is really on the 2/3 star line, since we had such mixed experiences. The first time I brought my cat in because she wasn't eating, I had Dr. Bower. After x-rays, blood work, cancer tests, urinalysis, and a $400 bill, they sent me home with two prescriptions and a can of food - WITHOUT telling me what was wrong with her. It was "ominous" and "odd," "probably some kind of infection." Oookay. The medications didn't work and after a little Google search of her symptoms I started to believe she had a tumor behind her eye. She got worse that night, I brought her back in the next day and another vet confirmed what I thought. This vet (I don't know her name) was so nice, patient, informative, communicative, and was incredibly supportive when I had to put my kitty to sleep. I'm a little pissed that the first vet didn't even mention the possibility of a tumor behind her eye... Why didn't she consider what I found out after ten minutes of searching on the 'net? Why was she so vague when the second vet knew exactly what was wrong? For $400 all we did was extend the kitty's suffering for two more weeks. BUT because the second vet was so kind, I would probably go back in the future. read more
