I wish I could give a higher rating, but how the customer service clerk at the front desk handled my concern over a simple billing discrepancy has really pushed me to being dissatisfied. This review is not specifically for the veterinarian who cared for my cat, but more so to Fiona up front. A bad apple can really spoil the bunch when a simple misunderstanding goes completely ignored as if myself and my cat do not matter. Let me explain: I had a routine physical appointment for my cat on October 6, 2021 at 6PM. When I got home immediately that evening after my cat's appointment, I noticed that I was charged $15 for my cat's nail trim. My concern is that for all of the years I have brought my cat to BVC I have never been charged for a nail trim, nor have I ever been informed there was a charge associated with the trim. As a matter of fact, these nail trims were introduced to me as being complimentary to the examination. This is proven by the "nail trim, complimentary" lines on all of my cat's vet bills from 2018 (the time I adopted him) and 2019. To double down on this, there was no charge for the trim on the 2020 bill and my cat did receive the nail trim in 2020 as well. As such, my understanding was that it was included in the examination fee I was charged. I wanted to call that evening as soon as I noticed the charge but, due to the appointment being at 6PM, the practice was closed by the time I arrived home and noticed the discrepancy. I called immediately when they opened the following morning to discuss. I tried to come to a resolution by phone that morning, October 7, 2021 at 8AM but the woman, Fiona, did not provide me with a satisfactory resolution. I required a timely response to the concern I am detailing now. I tried to explain to Fiona by phone that morning that the veterinary technician asked me if I wanted a nail trim, but she did not inform me of the price associated with the service. I deserved the right to adequately weigh my options. Fiona informed me that nail trims are not complementary to the examination service, but then she doubled back and said that they can be complimentary depending on the service provided. I had bills from all previous years my cat was examined and it has always been the same service, a routine examination, nothing additional, and they have always been complimentary. So I am asking why the charge in 2021 and why did the technician not inform me prior to charging and performing the service? Fiona also told me that BVC does not tell clients the price of services and that the clients must ask. Fiona also tried to justify this by saying I received my bill at the end of the service and could've addressed it then. Yes, I received my bill with this charge, but, unfortunately I did not notice it at that time. However, there is no true difference between me reaching out the following morning immediately after I noticed this discrepancy and if I pushed on the charge in the office. The trim was already performed, my card was already swiped, and the trim could not be undone at the time I received the bill. As such, from both a customer service and business standpoint, these charges should have been brought to my attention prior to providing the service. It should have been the technician who informed me of the charge, that way I could have declined and clipped my cat's nails as I do the other 364 days in the year. Failing to inform clients of additional charges not intended initially is a poor business practice and will be considered as I evaluate my cat's care provider. I emailed BVC immediately after my conversation with Fiona and attached every single one of my cat's previous bills so they could see that I am telling the truth about never being charged before and the complimentary lines indicated. I never received a response which is disrespectful. It was never about the $15 per say, but rather, the principle. My cat has been a loyal and well-behaved patient with them for years. I wanted to support the vet that aided in my adopting him but they really paid us dust for such a minuscule misunderstanding. Fiona also mentioned that she could not see my billing history in the system, but that does not mean they do not exist. I still have my billing statements and am willing to provide them to a superior if I ever receive a response! I would attach them here but they have too much of my personal information. Also, I waited to post this because I really wanted to give them a chance but after waiting almost 5 months it is more than fair to say my emails and phone calls will not be answered. Fiona should also not be handling the front desk, the other reviews in here complaining about her are true. read more

We just switched to Boston Veterinary Care and were so happy with our first appointment! The vet and technician were so friendly, really took their time reviewing everything and answering all of our questions. Most importantly, they don't pressure you into any meds/prescriptions and their prices for everything is so reasonable. They keep true to their online promos (first exam free!) and even the info packets they gave us were so much more helpful. We did our puppy's first exam at another clinic nearby (hint hint- around the corner, across the Street, VERY similar name) and felt so rushed because we were probably the last appointment. The staff just didn't seem very sincere. And prices there were crazy high- like 25-30% higher. And they said first exam was free but it wasn't when we got there...After a disheartening first appointment, I'm so happy we made the switch to Boston Vet Care! read more

Everyone that Bob and I have seen here seems to genuinely care about him and me. He's always a little bit nervous when he has to go for shots, but they always offer him cheese or a treat. We LOVE BVC! I was really worried about doing our first vet visit during COVID, as we would not be able to be present with our pup. Dr. Newlin was amazing. She kept us aware of the whole process and even took pictures of our Esco during his visit. She was very informative, transparent and educational. Fiona picked up my phone and was more than unhelpful. She told me that her the BVC is not accepting new clients, which they should probably mention on their website. Why are they offering a $25 credit to their existing clients if they're not accepting new clients. Even though I get that the pandemic has created challenging guidelines, my dog needs medical care. When I asked where else he could be seen, she told me that most other clinics were also all booked up. When I asked her what to do if all the vets in the area are booked up, she said I should take my dog to urgent care. As someone who is new to the area, he needs a regular doctor. I've been taking my dog here for both acute and routine care needs over the last several years. The vets and techs have been fantastic! Whenever something has come up requiring my dog to be seen, they have accommodated my work schedule with same day or next day appointments, which is a huge relief. They have managed everything from routine vaccinations to his prescription food to infections to the diagnose of and surgery for a tumor. The staff is always friendly, informative, and (most importantly) spoils my dog. All three of our cats receive exceptional care at BVC. Everyone who works there is professional, knowledgeable, and friendly. We love Dr. Breda. In fact, we followed her to BVC when she moved to the practice. Emily, Stephanie, and Victor are skilled vet techs who really know their stuff and treat our guys with genuine kindness. The front desk staff are super nice, efficient, and always timely in returning messages. Two of our cats have serious conditions (advanced heart disease and persistent asthma) and we are absolutely confident that they are in very capable hands with Dr. Breda. She has worked in tandem with their cardiologist to ensure they are on the same page with their care plans. Dr. Breda is exceedingly patient and always takes the time to answer our endless questions. I cannot believe this place has 5 stars after my experience here. It's probably because any client with a concern gets kicked out the door. Please read my full review to understand full scope. I took my dog here for a simple ear infection last year- all went well. I will say their support staff is very friendly and great with the animals, except for their main vet. Others say first exam was free and I, of course, was charged. Dog got better- great. This year, our dog stayed with a friend and had ticks on her when we came back from vacation. Her eye was not blinking, ear was not moving, half of her face was paralyzed. Very lethargic. Brought her in on a Saturday and tried explaining to the vet the symptoms I saw since I work from home and am with my dog every day. She proceeded to tell me it was allergies and ignored my concerns. I have allergies... it doesn't cause facial paralysis. I felt I knew more than the vet after 10 minutes of googling than her entire career. When they called with blood work, I recited to the 2nd vet (Shophet-Ratner- who is AMAZING by the way but only there one day a week) my concerns and she had me bring my dog back in on Monday since they are closed Sunday. I had a wonderful visit with her and she was very attentive to my concerns and provided me a lot of answers and options. When it came time to pay, they charged me for a second visit. I was not given price breakdown prior to being charged and when I asked, I was told my card was already being charged and only the lead doc can reverse it. I would have never agreed to a second visit fee as I feel issues brought up COULD HAVE been resolved in one visit, had their vet listened to me and done a thorough job. Despite this, I decided I wanted to talk to Dr. Breda about my concerns. We played phone tag for over a week before I actually got to speak to her. I planned on expressing my concern for her one vet not being thorough causing me to have to come back on their NEXT BUSINESS DAY for the exact same symptoms/concerns, have them admit it was looked over on the first visit/a mistake and unfair for me to get charged again, get a refund on the second visit, and we all move on on our way. Boy, was I wrong. At first, a voicemail from Dr. Breda told me her "hands were tied" when it came to refunds, which is BS since all charges can be reversed. Ironically, when I left a message saying I would bring it up with my credit card company I was issued a refund. I was also told veterinary care is a "multi-step process and sometimes we don't get all the answers in one visit"- Okay... fine.. but the same symptoms on two separate visits on consecutive business days? That seems like a scam to get people to come in twice in order to charge them. I was clearly IGNORED by the first vet of what my concerns were, which was the only reason for the second visit. Not new symptoms, not anything getting worse, but strictly to have someone listen to me. That should not be my responsibility, financial or otherwise. Once we finally spoke, Dr. Breda seemed to take her vet's side as opposed to mine without even hearing the whole story or how everything unfolded. She was closed off to me trying to provide them constructive feedback so clients do not feel ignored or taken advantage of. Her response? That she would send me my dog's records and I should go to another vet. Let's go back to the beginning- I just wanted a refund for the second visit since it could have been avoided had they done their job properly. I was trying to solve an issue and continue to see Dr. Shophet moving forward. Instead, I was TOLD TO LEAVE. If their answer to client issues is to kick them out the door and avoid ANY issues that arise, they are not the organization for me. If you take your pet there (most likely 2-3 times since they don't listen to your concerns fully), open your wallet and express no concerns about your experience, yes- this place is fine. But I expected my concern to be appreciated and resolved, but instead I was told to go to another vet. I would NOT recommend this to anyone who has their pet's health as their first priority. Dr. Shophet is amazing and request to see her as the other vet is less knowledgable than a 10 minute Google search. HIGHLY disappointing experience. read more

After deciding I was not going back to the Vet I've been going to for 13 yrs, I decided to try BVC and I'm so glad I did. Not only did we get an appt pretty fast for my cat, the prices were surprising, very reasonable, to say the least. The care was exceptional, the communication was great, was informed, via phone, every step of the way. Went back a week later, another very fast appt, because my guy was vomiting, a lot. Another great visit for my guy. Dr. G called to keep us informed, the Vet tech as well did, the staff is great. Beverly is another staff member who is very kind and caring. I'm in shock that there's more than one star on this place. I've always had fabulous vets...until I came to BVC. This Vet insisted my dog be muzzled as she walked into the room - her reason, "all chihuahuas are nasty." My dog was calmly sitting on my lap. No growling/teeth showing/any sign of aggressiveness - he's also never been muzzled OR aggressive at my previous vet office. I expect this from uneducated people, but from a vet?! I was shocked. She was extremely rough during his checkup, and while he usually is calm during exams, he began crying borderline screaming when she tried to work on his anal glands (this was never an issue with other vets). My dog has NEVER made noises like that, and I was horrified. I insisted she stop - paid - left - and went elsewhere! Never, even in my most desperate moments would I return to this place. read more

I wish I could give this place more than 5 stars. Two months ago both of my senior cats were experiencing different health problems at the same time. I booked an appointment here and I was incredibly nervous about taking them in, considering I have had them both for years and wanted to make sure they were getting the best possible care. One of my cats ended up being diagnosed with feline diabetes and they were amazing about making sure I felt confident taking care of him and giving the required home insulin injections, as well as ensuring he was on the right dosage, etc. There were a few bumps along the road that I encountered and everyone at the office was incredibly friendly and helpful with my dozens of questions, especially Dr. Shophet and the Office Manager, Beverly, who also had a diabetic cat at one point in her life. Any time I needed assistance they always let me know they were happy to help with anything I needed and often called to follow up on my cat's progress between checkups. My other cat needed surgery for cyst removals and dental extractions and the staff was fantastic with him as well. Everyone from the front desk, to the vet techs, to the doctors, were all compassionate, patient and skilled with the animals. I am happy to say that both of my cats are doing great now thanks to the care they received at Boston Veterinary Care! I will also say that I know cost is a concern for a lot of people when they discover their pet is sick. I never felt at any point that I was being taken advantage of or pushed to perform unnecessary tests and that their pricing was very fair. They can also provide estimates for any services you need. They also have a great online tool called Pet Portal that you can use to track your pet's appointments, vaccinations, prescriptions and any other needs they have like special diets, etc. read more

Such a great experience! At first I didn't know what to expect from the ARLB; however, the moment I walked through the doors my experience was beyond pleasant. Both the vet clinic and the animal shelter were clean and the staff very friendly. I took my small two year old dog to the clinic for his yearly physical. Dr. Davis and his two lovely assistants took us right into a very clean exam room. Dr. Davis was extremely thorough; he examined our dog from head to toe, answered all of our over anxious parental questions, and seemed to be gentle with the syringes. Overall a great experience. Visit included: 1. full body exam, 2. rabies booster, 3. Lyme vaccine booster, 4. Continuum Canine 3-year Vaccine, 5. Frontline Plus 3 pack, and 6. "4DX Snap Test" (Heart Worm, Lyme, Ehrlich, and Anapla testing). TOTAL = $236.01 The service was excellent and we recommend highly. Does anyone have feelings, one way or the other, about the cost? DO NOT TAKE YOUR PET HERE! I used to love this place, until I realized they had NO IDEA what they are doing! They diagnosed my dog with hip dysplasia and gave her medication. I trusted that they knew what they are doing because it is there job to know what they are doing. Well, I was wrong. They never did x-rays, couldn't give me a proper prognosis or really give me any information at all. I took her to a different vet because this seemed really weird. The next vet suggested x-rays to see whats going on, because apparently you can't even diagnose hip dysplasia without an x-ray!!!! I took my dog to a specialist at Angell for a final opinion, which the new vet encouraged, because they wanted to see my dog get the best help possible. At Angell, the Dr did x-rays, and guess what...MY DOG DIDN'T HAVE HIP DYSPLASIA AT ALL! In fact, she didn't even have arthritis or anything! He said she probably wont EVER have issues with her joints. He said it was most likely a pulled groin muscle. I was giving my dog expensive medication everyday for an incompetent diagnosis. DO NOT GO HERE! Due to the misdiagnosis I have been walking my dog for MONTHS and had no idea how much pain I was putting her through! She was supposed to have bed rest! If you love your pet, avoid this place at all cost! read more

I had so much appreciation seeing someone taking the time and patience to treat him well and care for his comfort while he went through the exam and vaccinations. I started bringing my beagle-terrier mix here when I moved to Boston in 2010 and lived 2 blocks away. Now that I'm out in Somerville I keep making the drive because the staff has been nothing short of great with me and my pup. I've never waited more than 3 days to get in for an appointment and from the standard visits (routine vaccinations & physicals) to the frantic problem calls (stomach bugs, glass in paw, dog ate tin foil-halp!) they've always been thorough, experienced and friendly. The vet offices are on the back side of the Animal Rescue League and the clinic is clean and efficiently run by a top-knotch staff. The doctors and vet techs have all been completely knowledgable and adept at treating my dog as well as explaining symptoms, care options and the necessary follow-up to me. Plus I always get a phone call a few days later to check-in about test results or followup --- seriously appreciated for any worried pet owner. Price-wise? I haven't shopped around to Angel or other local vets, so I can't give much of a cost comparison- but I can say service rates are in line with our last 2 vets when living in Connecticut and I've never once felt pushed into unexplained or unnecessary tests/treatment. read more

Best vet visit ever! The doctor and her assistant bonded with my kitty instantly which really helped cut down on her anxiety (mine too!) The whole staff was amazingly friendly and the doctor was very knowledgeable and she spent a lot of time with us and answered all of my crazy questions. BVC has also got to be one of the most reasonably priced vets in the city - my bill was only about half of what I thought it was going to be. And, as if that weren't enough, they even clipped kitty's nails for free! Of course the very best part is the awesome goodie bag we got to take home. It had lots of info, samples, stickers, and even a kitty toy - all packed up in the most adorable gift bag all done up with tissue paper and ribbon. Yay! read more

We went to Boston Veterinary Care for several years when we were living nearby. They were always responsive and really kind to our older dog. Eventually, due to several health issues, they recommended we see a specialist which ended up giving our dog a much better quality of life. Recently, it was time to say goodbye to our dog and they were able to fit us in that day and made the process as smooth as possible. They were incredibly kind and reaffirmed that we were making the right decision and then patient and respectful as we said goodbye. I couldn't recommend their team any more. read more

Amazing! I adopted a 4 year old dog from the Animal Rescue League back in September and his first 3 months of medical care were paid for by the shelter if I had him treated at Boston Veterinary Care (the health center affiliated with the shelter). My dog needed, and still needs, quite a bit of care due to some pre-existing conditions that I was aware of at the time of adoption. I initially just planned on using the free three months at ARL then switching to a different vet but I have never in my life had such a positive experience at any sort of business. Everyone knows my dog and me and they are very familiar with my dog's medical issues. Though I am at the clinic a lot, they've remembered me since my very first visit and I'm sure they would remember me even if I only needed to come in once a year. My dog is usually seen by Dr. Davis but when he is not available we've seen other vets in the practice and always had a wonderful experience. Dr. Davis spends as much time as necessary with my dog during each visit and he never rushes me when I bombard him with questions at the end of an appointment. If I ever call with a question, a vet tech will speak with me immediately and if necessary will have Dr. Davis do a follow up call, never more than a few hours later. Last month I had to take my dog to Angell Memorial at 3:30am and by 10am I received a call from ARL to make sure that everything was alright. I then received another follow up call a few days later just to double check that my dog was doing well. I am beyond impressed with both the quality of care and the personal atmosphere at Boston Veterinary Care. I would highly recommend BVC to anyone! read more

We have two dogs - a pitbul mix and golden retriever (quite the duo!) and switched to BVC from South Bay Vet (you can see my separate review on South Bay). We have nothing but positive experiences thus far! Unlike South Bay, we finally felt welcome and not like outcasts with our pitbull in the waiting room. They have really gone above and beyond. At one 'emergency' appointment with our golden, they were actually on the floor wrestling with him to clip and clean out and painful infection he had on his underside (Dr. Obrien is awesome). They even called the next day to check up on him. Overall, I feel more comfortable and welcome and BVC than my previous vet. I also love the fact that they work closely with the ARL. They have better prices and their work is top notch. A+ and highly recommended! read more

This is an update to a previous review. Dr. Breda goes out of her way, to accommodate her patients. Initially I went in, after getting an astronomical quote from Boston Vet Clinic (not to be confused with Bos Vet Care) over on Tremont street. My kitty is an older boy and he is super gentle. Initially when I went in, I felt the first vet tech was a little rough. That has been fixed. I had asked them, please be gentle, a couple of times but maybe they didn't hear me. As anxious as my kitty was, they did bloodwork. (my guess is my kitty was freaked out by that time) Bloodwork came out questionable that has nothing to do with BVC but the lab. They called me immediately, apologized profusely and Emily assured me not only that she'd be gentle with my kitty, but also told me they'd not charge for bloodwork, but I'd get a slight discount on upcoming dental care. Thumbs up for great service. Emily is fantastic. And the guy who was helping too, the 2nd time for the bloodwork with a spanish accent was super nice too. Best part, they asked me if I wanted to be present when they drew the blood (not like before) I said yes and my kitty was much calmer. It was in and out and quick. He recovered from that trip quickly. The first time he was not happy for a whole day and night, hid in a dark corner. So then as the bloodwork returned Dr. Breda who I believe is stellar was very honest with me, what to expect and what to anticipate with anesthesia etc. I really like her honesty. Some veterinarians would probably try and say lets do this and that and...rack up your bill. Dr. Breda is assertive, confident and honest, and truly cares. That is all that matters to me. For some, our fur babies are our babies and as such should always be handled tenderly when needed. I have been taking my pup Franklin to the BVC for over four years. I have cycled through at least two vets in that time and currently have Doctor Breda who is wonderful. The vets before her were wonderful too. In my four years I have never had a bad experience, found any of the office workers to be rude or felt the advice given was not accurate. Franklin is always treated like a king, given tons and tons of love and treats as he gets his treatments. I've brought my dog and two cats here many times and I have to say I really like the care that my pets receive. Dr. Newlin takes care of my babies and she's very patient and helpful. She answers all my questions and has scheduled time to speak to me on the phone outside of her office hours. She's also very accessible via email. Everyone I've encountered, from front office to technician, has been very nice and provides great customer service. I like that I can always get an appointment with them without waiting too long like some other places. Another great thing about this place is that proceeds go towards funding the shelter that's adjacent to this clinic! Vets services are never cheap, but at least this makes me feel better about spending money... Their rates are actually not too bad compared to other places within Boston. The most important reason why I love this place is that the vet and techs are all so gentle and patient to my animals. You can tell by how they handle them that they really have my pets best interests in mind. Their location in the South End is pretty convenient and their service is top notch. I don't think my adjusted review had anything to do with it, but they've really upped their game. Someone contacted me about my review and indicated that they are going through some transitions and they understand my frustrations that it's impacted the patients. So in light of that communication (ah ha! they are communicating!) and the fact that they have a team of dedicated staff that knows each pet's name -- I am resuming their 5 star status. GREAT experience here. Moved to Boston from NYC two years ago so my dog (Wig) was due for shots before we fly with him this summer. Office was clean, staff was great and the Doctor is right in the middle of the mix which makes a big difference. Always nice to have a great vet for your best (hairy) friend. We are SO thrilled to have found Boston Veterinary Care "BVC" to take care of our Golden Retriever, Lila! The Boston Veterinary Care staff (especially veterinary technician Emily and veterinarian Dr. Guarin!) are fantastic. We felt so welcomed from the beginning and called BVC about a few questions/issues we had about our puppy even before her 1st visit and they took the time to answer our questions enthusiastically and thoroughly. We could not have asked for a better team to care for our Lila than BVC! If you are looking for a vet, look no further. I have a 6 mo old puppy and have been taking him here since I brought him home. From experience with previous vets in my life, Boston Veterinary Care has been the best so far. The team is friendly and love animals. My puppy loves going to the vet and has never cried during a visit. The staff and vets are always making sure he is comfortable--be it with shots, blood work, or whatnot. Prices are reasonable and the staff is just amazing. They are no-bullshit people that will inform you and let you make informed decisions about your pet's health and well-being. read more

I just had my first visit to BVC with my new puppy and I am so happy I found them! From general calls to the main phone number, to Victor greeting us outside before bringing my dog inside, and Dr. Breda calling after the exam - everything was great!
