Customers are reaching in freely touching and turning the bowls and smoothies to see names - certainly not sanitary. I even saw a person come up and just grab an order without checking a name or anything, not sure if it was theft but one can assume. After picking up your order they have shared honey and chia seed containers for you to apply as you please, so everyone has to touch it. You then have to go back to the cashier if you would like a bag and request it. Review of the food - We tried the mermaid bowls. They were good, a different take compared to the Açaí bowl. I love making my own smoothies and often frequent this South Block every time I'm at Union Market, but I've noticed the acai bowls here are quite sweet and more of a dessert than a breakfast food. The blue majik bowl is slightly less sweet. I learned that blue majik itself is just blue spirulina powder that has no taste but is packed with vitamins and protein. The color is beautiful though! They are generous with the fruits and granola and chia seeds are always unlimited at the counter in a squeeze bottle. It's super noisy eating at the small counter next to South Block because of the blender noise and the fact the smoothie always gets stuck at the bottom and they always need to hit the blender to get it to blend smoothly. All the bowls mostly have juice in it. I've substituted greens for pineapple juice because I didn't want the extra sugar. The substitution costs an extra $2 and makes it super watery. If you're looking for a less sugary option, stick to the smoothies. read more

I was on a South Block roll. My trips were getting better and better and I was looking forward to keeping the good times going. As a fan of Union Market, I was excited to find out there was a new South Block so close to me, in a space I enjoy with its own parking lot. My visit was during a mid-day late lunch lull. I had my mind made up and my sights set on something, as long as it didn't have berries or bananas on top. That's what I usually do, sometimes with hemp hearts, other times with goji berries and cacao nibs. Even with this being the smallest South Block, I've been too, this was the most well-staffed crew I've seen. There were about 5 or 6 people working in a limited space and they were all nice and that was helpful because I felt so let-down by the amount of things they didn't have. The lack of goji berries, almond butter and cacao nibs hemp hearts left me broken, lonely and crying. So then I sat my hindparts in a stool, "about to break down."* I was happy to see all of the people checking out South Block because I really enjoy it but then I started to get impatient because I really wanted my bowl and it was taking some time, another swing and a miss. After about 7 minutes or so, my abbreviated bowl was ready. If my spoon was a shovel I would say that I started digging in but it was an açaí bowl that was missing umph. I was so excited to find out that there was one located in Union Market, therefore decided this would be the perfect time to make a visit. We came around during lunch time, and there was no line to order but a short wait for the bowl, since this it was pretty busy. The staff was very pleasant; upon ordering, I was offered a sample of a small vegetable dish with cauliflower, sweet potato, chia seeds, and a savory sauce to season. It was quite delicious, and made me very excited to taste my açaí bowl! The warrior bowl itself was wonderful -- refreshingly cold to combat the hot weather with a perfect balance of sweet! It was topped with crunchy granola, bananas, blueberries, and strawberries, presented in a cute plastic cup/bowl, very Snapchat worthy. I think the topped granola really made the bowl for me. It was quite filling, however not to the point of feeling overstuffed -- I felt very refreshed and energized. It was the perfect lunch for me. I am in love with these acai bowls!! The PB and J bowl is my absolute favorite. It has acai, banana, blueberries and peanut butter in the base. It is topped with blueberries bananas and their homemade granola. I always add a little bit of honey and chia seeds to the top. It is so fresh, tasty and it actually fills me up as if I ate a meal. I just had the most off putting experience here. The only reason I'm giving two stars because I really enjoy South Block ay other locations and I can't think of a time I had a bad experience. The employees work efficiently. I was in line with my boyfriend and cousin. They ordered AFTER me. They both got their order before me. The entire time, the employees are cackling, having conversation, generally wylin'. The manager is sitting right there and they're including her in the joke time. Meanwhile I'm still waiting. To the point my cousin, from the other end of the hall, put his hands up like "what gives?" She then proceeds to give yet another person that ordered after me their order. She said my name and gave me the smoothie. I wish I would have immediately walked away. Instead, I grab a straw, unwrap it and go to put it in the smoothie. She then tells me she gave me gave me the wrong smoothie and gives it to a man who ordered after me. It was the same one I ordered. The guy ordered two smoothies and I guess because she made two she felt the need to give it to him. That really peeved me. The amount of time I had to wait for the smoothie given that there was no line when I ordered was actually ridiculous. There were times when they were holding the blender and the finished smoothie and rather than quickly give me my order, they stand there holding it so that they could continue to chat. I think it's pretty basic to expect employees not to be extensively having personal conversation and laughing LOUDLY while customers are waiting. It would make more sense to get the customers out of the way so that you could comfortably chat and joke. I honestly hope this one off experience rather than a common occurrence. read more
