I purchased a 6.0 power stroke. I paid for the performance package. In just 15,000 miles, the head gaskets blew. Of course it overheated when that happened suddenly. I called for warranty and was told that because it got hot, it voided my warranty. It got hot because the O ringed head gaskets failed! I paid another shop to fix it. Now, after just 60,000 miles, the engine has metal in the oil filter. It appears a lifter failed. I won't even bother asking for warranty. Buyer beware of this shady shop! read more

Mike, I see you're being dismissive just like JD. This truck is completely bone stock, and I am more than happy to provide pictures and videos for our whole audience to see. If you would look closely at the pictures, I did post on pictures of the cylinder heads. The heat tabs are still fully intact. I am a certified, licensed diesel fleet repair shop, and have been for the last 22 years. I have installed dozens of these motors. This is the first engine I have ever seen warped heads with having ARP head studs in them. Your company is a typical mail order company that does not stand behind it's product. As I have read from other reviews! Furthermore, I even had the repair facility reach out to your company. Like I said the internet is a very powerful place. It is now 2024, 3 years and 48K miles later. Engine is running strong as new with the following changes: I swapped out the 238/80 injectors for 205/30's and replaced the 1.0 a/r turbine housing for a .84 one. My bad, should have listened about the difference between building for high end power which I hardly used vs low end torque which I use everyday. I also replaced the ball bearing CHRA with a journal unit so I could use the S300 turbine wheel which is about 30% larger. Coupled with the 88/66 wheel and Jelibuilt tuning, bottom end torque is much better with almost zero lag and much less smoke. Oil consumption is approximately 1 qt every 5k miles and ZERO blow by which I attribute to the honing process they use. I was able to pull a 11k lb trailer at 10,000 ft over the Eisenhower Pass at 70 mph while passing slower vehicles. EGT''s held steady in the 1200 f range with trans temps never exceeded 200 degrees with the 6.0 cooler. I'm also thrilled with the stage 1 cam which I highly recommend. This new combo lost about 120 hp above 2800 rpm but the bottom end torque and quick throttle response is just incredible. I did have a head issue which turned out to be a casting defect in the injector cup area necessitating a replacement at 20 months and 26k miles. Even though this occurred 2 months past the warranty date, JD sent a replacement anyway at no charge including shipping. I cannot attest as to other customers issues but I would definitely use them again as their customer service and tech support is excellent. Kudos to South Houston Engine for a well built 7.3 and I''ll provide another update once I hit 100k miles. read more

Complete scam, paid 5200$ for a 7.3 that was not machined or built correctly. Had to send it back once to "fix" got it back same thing. Engine is pressurizing past what it should. First issue was lifting injector cups. They couldn't even fix that right the first time and they blew again. Now being told by JD "out of warranty" when they never sent a working motor in the first place. Do yourself a favor and DO NOT buy with them. read more

Engine was a long block 5.9 cummins. Has been in the truck for 2 years and still going good. I would recommend south Houston engine.

I purchased a Powerstroke engine from them 3/18. Within weeks after install the engine began leaking oil at the head gaskets. I contacted the company and spoke w/ JD. I was informed that their engines simply could not leak from the head gaskets. My mechanic put dye in the system and positively identified the leak. Again, the company refused to pay for the repair. Their warranty is worthless and so is their product. Do yourself a favor and shop somewhere else. read more

This company does not stand behind its warranty. We spent over $6,000.00 for an engine they sold on e-bay and paid freight as well. The crankshaft broke within a few months of purchase. When we contacted them regarding this they said "that never happens, you must have done something wrong". It was their engine, and it was installed by a very experienced, master certified diesel technician. We lost a lot of money on this deal. read more

I purchased a short block for my 2007.5 Dodge 3500, A 6.7 Cummins. It arrived a couple weeks later, came with all required gaskets. I did the work myself on weekends . I was concerned because it took longer than the 30 day requirement for my core to get back to them. But thankfully they said it was ok and they picked it up no problem. If I ever need another engine, I would not hesitate to use them again. read more

Terrible experience I would recommend going to another engine builder...I contracted South Houston Engine to machine my engine and provide new pistons, rings, bearings and freeze plugs in the freshly machined block and revitalize my heads. They came in with and extremely low budget, well that budget was shot once I picked up the engine and realized they gave my piece of garbage cast pistons. I had explained to them multiple times prior to the build that forged pistons were required with my application. Needless to say my budget was raised by almost $500.00 and a week later I was on may to rebuilding the engine with my new pistons and press fit connecting rods. I was told by them when I picked up the pistons that the rings were not file fit, but when I test fit the rings they were incorrectly sized. I proceeded to file fit every ring in the entire engine assembly. Next issue 4 out of the 8 (#'s 2, 4, 7, 8) connecting rods were installed backwards on the pistons. This may seem like no big deal but they are press fit connecting rods so I have to heat up connecting rod and slide or press out the piston sleeve and reset the rod in the opposite direction. Unfortunately I had to find this out the hard way, once I got all my pistons installed in the block I noticed that the chamfered side of 4 of the connecting rods were on the inside not against the crankshaft journals and I could hardly rotate the crankshaft with the rod caps finger tight. Of course I had to fix this by re-press fitting my rods myself. Next issue was the main cap bolts were all scattered, meaning I brought in each main cap with the bolt that came out of it...bolted into the block. It is pretty common that these bolts should go back in their original place and since they are not torque to yield bolts they can be reused. Well again i had to find out the hard way that they mixed them all up. When I installed the oil pump the stud that holds the oil pick up in place, was installed on the wrong main cap. Now I probably should have noticed this earlier, but I just assumed that they would have kept each bolt in its original hole. My experience with South Houston Engine was sub-par to say the least. They seem like nice enough guys but I question the professionalism they have working in their machine shop. The thing that gets me the most is, I am rebuilding the engine myself so am finding out all these issues and fixing them, but if I had them rebuild I would not find the issues until something catastrophic happened. read more
