I drive by this store on a daily basis and always forget to stop by when I need any alcoholic beverages. While cooking dinner, I realized I needed sake and I did not want to drive all the way to Spec's so I called Chris' Liquor and when I asked the guy if they had sake he was so short and kind of rude by telling me "yay, we have two kinds". I was so put out that I remembered South Lamar Wine and Spirits, called them and the response was the complete opposite! When I entered the store, the guy remembered me, pointed me in the right direction and helped me decide which sake was the best for my meal. I was so appreciative and I noticed that they have a great selection of wine and spirits. I plan on going back to this store often. At least they appreciate your business. read more

Awesome selection. Came in from Denver to visit friends and was floored by this place. Tons of beer from all over but this place really shines wine and liquor wise. Some old stuff and newer varieties and the prices are more than decent. Good local spot to get some beer or a nice bottle of wine for a friend as a gift. Limes and bottle openers up front if you are in a pinch. More of a serious spot for alcohol than a place to stop off and grab a case. Take your time choosing or ask a staff member but you really can't go wrong with their selection. 4/5 because the cashiers are a bit weird. You get wrapped up in weird conversations when you try and pay/leave. Awkward talks but the place still stands out. read more

As a longtime resident of Central Austin, I have included South Lamar Wine & Spirits as a member of our local gems list. It was saddening to me this past weekend when I visited and found that this business is not adhering to the citywide pandemic mask mandate and is not requiring staff, vendors, or customers to protect one another by wearing masks. Going forward, I will prioritize wine stores that provide a healthy and protective environment for their customers and will not be returning to South Lamar Wine & Spirits. read more

I just recently moved down south, and let me tell you from personal experience I absolutely love coming to the store! The owner, Pete is such a pleasure to be around. He is always more than helpful with anything you would like to find in the store. It's not like twin liquors or other big chains, which I love. Prices are always fair and they have the hip liquor store type vibe at this location... they have been in business for about six years, and I believe they have another location in Oak Hill. This is a solid place for bar needs from beer to mescal. Every time I visit family in austin we stock up here. They're open fairly late, they're friendly and helpful, and aside from the booze and wine, there's a giant cooler full of great beer! Yay! I was too lazy to turn left off of Lamar on Friday night to go to Chris' Liquor and decided, instead, to run into South Lamar Wine and Spirits to get a bottle of wine to go with dinner. It was my first time there. What a mistake! While the wine I got was good, the experience I had was not. There was a man in the store without a mask who was impossible to avoid. I don't know if he worked there, was a supplier, a friend of the person working there -- I just know he was in and out of door and the aisles. and then leaned on the counter to the side of the cash register and talked to the (masked) employee while he was working. It was impossible to avoid him and the person at the cash register was clearly okay with it. And, it's a small space. What an unnecessary risk! Never again. read more

And before you serve those mimosas, roll out the red carpet by serving a glass of good champagne. South Lamar Wine & Spirits stocks an impressive champagne selection - I purchased a bottle of Perrier Jouet Brut for a fair price and some more affordable prosecco for the mimosas and bellinis. They do sell the famous flower-etched bottle but a Benjamin is a *bit* out of my price range. I also perused the extensive wine, spirits and beer selection... the store is cleanly laid-out and the employees are very helpful. A wine tasting was going on while I was in the store and it looks like they'll soon be adding specials to their website. Though this stretch of Lamar is usually really busy, the parking lot makes picking up your favorite spirits a breeze! read more

We came in for Don Julio 1942... about $140 (they sold it for $114), and they suggested we go with another tequila that is presented better AND on sale for $87... JACKPOT... b/c I needed two! I collect single malt scotch and these guys always have the best selection in the city. They almost always get the rare and hard to find bottlings. The service is great, store is clean and well organized, and it's nice when follow through on special orders and such. The beer selection is pretty good but it's overpriced for the area. Go less than a block either way and you will find cheaper everything..from singles to six packs. I will give them respect for having a good sour selection. Still overpriced but you can find all of the stuff on the shelves at different locations. Basically drop the prices of all your bombers by 2, singles by 1, six packs 2-3 and 12 packs around 3-4. That is to just be equal to the block radius. This liquor store has a wide variety of craft beers, whiskey, tequila, mezcal, wine, cigars, etc. If you need a specialty liqour they have it, or will get it for you. They are like Disneyland for liqour, you can get lost in there for a while with their variety. Not to mention the staff is knowledgeable and friendly. This spot on South Lamar always has just what I need - whether that's a pricey bottle of something for a snobby friend or an $10 rose that wont take the enamel off your teeth. In this instance, I was in a bind. I needed some additional wine for a party and I needed it now! I was able to pull up, grab my booze, pay for said booze and get back in the car in under 10 minutes. I visited the store on 4/21. I went in and waited in line, once I got to the counter "Will" turned away from me and did not knowledge me at all. He was very friendly with other customers. I then asked for a couple of different products that he told me they did not carry, that I then went and found both products on the shelves. I then asked about the smaller bottles of said products that are behind the counter. He blatantly lied to me AGAIN while standing right in front of the products saying "We don't carry those". The whole time he was talking about me audibly to a co-worker while I was shopping. I did reach out to the owners with no response. I believe that the guy is homophobic and refused to help me based on my sexual orientation. read more

Even though it is not the closest liquor store to me, I often make a special trip out to South Lamar Wine & Spirits because they always carry what I'm looking for. And if they don't have it, they almost always offer to order it especially for me or to keep it in stock from then on. After only a few infrequent visits, they already remembered my buying preferences. It is the kind of customer service you can only get at a locally owned store. I am primarily a wine drinker and I find their selection to be well balanced, with a strong emphasis on reasonably priced but very high quality wines. They also have an excellent selection of sparkling wines and the staff have never steered me wrong when making recommendations on what to get. My hard liquor needs are infrequent, and I typically try to buy nicer things. I like that they carry a large number of products from local distilleries as well as niche products like higher end absinthes. They also stock a good selection of mixers, bitters and whatever else you might need. The beer selection is extensive and includes a large number of craft and specialty brews, as you would expect in beer-crazed Austin. Also, although I'm not a smoker, I think it is pretty cool that they have such a large humidor. I don't often give out 5 stars, but that's only because it is not very often that the customer service justifies it. These guys are knowledgeable, friendly, and very helpful. Although I don't live in the neighborhood, I've been here several times now, partly because my neighborhood doesn't have anything but sleazy hole-in-the-wall liquor stores with lousy parking, and I find myself needing a drink after driving up and down South Lamar. At this place, we always get a parking spot in the lot. So far, my software engineer lover and I have found everything we've looked for here from the popular to the unusual (like local wines), except one particular wine... The owner was really nice when we asked about it and took down the info, he ordered it for us, and we got the wine within two weeks. The beer selection is extensive as well. read more

When I first arrived in Austin I shopped for booze at Specs, because I assumed they would have the best prices. I was pretty quickly turned off by their blasé attitude and corporate indifference. So I thought I would give the local guys a try and have been shopping at South Lamar for quite some time. I think I will move onto someone else. Stopped by to check out the beer selection and to buy a bottle of wine last week. The craft beer selection is very good and the best part is that it is all refrigerated so it stays fresher, and is ready to drink on purchase, which is great. The downsides to this place are that there are very few single bottle sales for craft beer (as far as breaking up 6 packs) and that it is slightly on the expensive side for wine, as the bottle of Santa Margarita that I occasionally buy, is $21 here instead of roughly $17 as it is at my HEB. It is very clean, bright and modern looking inside and service is very friendly and helpful. Definitely a good spot to check out. read more

This place has a great convenient location for when I am staying at my buds place but their prices are a bit higher than other liquor stores further away. When I need a quick fix or don't feel like traveling too far, this place is great. Staff is always super friendly and quick to offer a suggestion when I need advise and the selection here is pretty wonderful. On top of all that I never have an issue getting in and out of the parking lot and the store is always clean. The only thing holding back a higher rating is the pricing, but hey, convenience comes at a price. read more

This is a nice, but pretty average liquor store. It's small, but the staff is always helpful. They have a good selection of liquor, but I feel like their wine prices are a bit inflated. I'd suggest it if you're in the area, but I tend to stick to Specs or HEB for wine. read more
