It's hard to put into words the care we have received at South Miami Vets and Pets. "We" includes our 6 year old Yorkie, Leo, and my family. Leo was bit by a large dog on a walk in the neighborhood and suffered multiple bite wounds. Over the last 3 months, Leo has been a daily visitor. He had multiple surgical procedures and daily bandage changes, as well as numerous prescriptions. He had little to no appetite which was coupled with a persistent fever. I'm happy to say that after some real touch-and-go periods, Leo seems to have turned the corner and is on his was to recovery. My Copper has been coming here since he was a puppy. I wouldn't trust anyone else with my bebe. The only "complaint" I have is that their aren't open 24/7 for emergencies because they know what their doing, they have your fur-babies interest at heart and at least with me they've worked with me. Vets are expensive due to the obvious - but I rather pay for good trusted service & care than be cheap with my pets health. The entire staff from Doctor to assistants to administration are all INCREDIBLE! They call me to follow up on my dog and her progress post visits which shows how much they care. We brought her into Dr. Diaz's clinic as new patients as we had heard great things about the clinic. Starting on a Monday with injections and moving onto blood work & X-rays, she was able pinpoint an internal infection. She prescribed effective medication to resolve the issue and slowly our loved one came around with improvements by Thursday and full recovery after 6 days. When Madelyn started running around with her toy in her mouth and eating again, we knew she was well & happy. This was my regular vet for about a year and a half. I took my pet because she was vomiting and had diarrhea, Dr. Diaz saw her. They did an electrolyte panel, CBC, chemistry, and gave her fluids. Her lab work came back perfect and nothing was abnormal. Also that day she was in a super rush. She discharged my dog with the promise that she will be making a full recovery and that we did not need a follow up. Fast forward a day later I call Dr. Diaz and told her that my dog wasn't feeling well still and that I was very concerned, not once did she offer to do further testing on her. After half a day I saw my best friend deteriorating so I rushed her to the pet emergency hospital. They did X rays on my pet and realized that she had an obstruction, something that Dr. Diaz could have easily noticed if she would have done an X ray on the first day. At this point she was very critical because she was dehydrated. They had to perform emergency exploratory surgery on her to remove the obstruction. Dr Diaz completely misdiagnosed my pet and was negligent when it came to her care. This vet office is only good for routine work ups. If your pet is actually not feeling well please take them to do a doctor who knows what they are doing and performs evidence based medicine as well differential diagnosis. I'm extremely disappointed in Dr. Diaz because I entrusted her with my pets life and she almost died due to her negligence. She needs to re-educate herself and refresh her knowledge. My family and I will not be taking our pets to this place ever again. read more

Only bad thing is that it was a little pricey at the end. But otherwise I love this place and will most definitely recommend it. I can not say enough positive things about this vet clinic! I brought my dog in on Friday after she ate my child's tights and was vomiting. Dr. Diaz was very attentive, took X-rays, and did all the appropriate blood work. She explained all the options to me and together we decided to give it 24 hours to see if she could pass the blockage. The next day my dog was still not right and I brought her back to the clinic. Dr. Diaz went out of her way to come in on a holiday weekend ( on her day off) to do surgery. She communicated the entire time with me and was very reassuring. The staff was so caring and thoughtful. Dr. Diaz stayed in touch with me all weekend to check on her. This was such a scary situation but because of Dr. Diaz and the whole staff at South Miami Pets and Vets, my beautiful pup is recovering. I took my dog, Cowboy, to Vets and Pets because his hind leg was hurting him and he couldn't walk on it. While there I mentioned to Dr. Acevedo that he seemed to have an ear infection because I'd noticed him scratching and shaking his head. She took a culture and told me he had a bacterial and a yeast infection. She told me she was going to clean his ears and apply some ointment. It sounded very innocuous. I took him home and noticed that he didn't seem to hear anything. I went to the follow up visit and Dr. Acevedo (for some strange reason, since his ears were now clean) was going to put another treatment in his ears and I said, "wait a minute", when is he going to get his hearing back from the first treatment. Dr. Acevedo claps her hands behind Cowboy's ears to see if he can hear the sound (there is zero reaction from him), looks at me, waves her hands apologetically, and says, "oh, that's sometimes a side effect of the BNT treatment". The dog loses their hearing. It's "possible" it may come back (no it's not, no dog that's lost their hearing due to BNT has had their hearing come back, as far as I could see from the many, many comments about this medication on the internet). So. Now I have a dog that I could have treated holistically for a minor ear infection, who is now COMPLETELY DEAF due to her irresponsibility. Did she ever mention the side effects? NOPE. Would I have let her give him that treatment if she had? NOPE. Furthermore, it's not as if this isn't a known side effect. IT'S ALL OVER THE INTERNET. GOOGLE "DOGS LOSE HEARING DUE TO BNT ANTIBIOTIC OINTMENT TREATMENT". https://answers.earthclinic.com/sudden-deafness-in-rat-terrier-after-ear-infection-and-teeth-cleaning-treatment.html THOUSANDS OF DOGS HAVE HAD THIS HAPPEN TO THEM. ACEVEDO I TOLD HER I WAS LEAVING MY OLD VET BECAUSE HE PRESCRIBED TOO MUCH MEDICATION FOR MY DOG, and I was more holistically oriented. She told me she was too. And here we are ... Three prescriptions later, one causing deafness, the other stopped due to immediate bad reaction. Dr. Acevedo, disappointment does not describe how I'm feeling. Bitter tears have been shed over the loss of trust, my poor dog's permanent hearing loss and the loss of quality of life for both of us, not to say the danger of him losing a major faculty, just when his eyesight is also starting to go. If he happens to get out of my yard, he can't hear cars or me calling him. You have rendered him completely helpless in this world. DON'T GO HERE unless you have money growing in your backyard.. This is one of those unfortunate places where you have a vet who takes advantages of its customers. Pure greed. I brought my dog in for an abscess a week ago and paid $200 for her to be looked at and cared for. No problem there. One doctor tells me I should have her teeth cleaned and a molar extracted soon. I decide to set up the appointment for a dental cleaning under anestesia and the extraction for the following week as I was told it doesn't have to be done right away, but "soon." I chose to have the dental cleaning and a tooth extracted the following week, on 6/27, 5 days from July 1st. No one told me there was a special going on for the month of July for dental cleanings. I ask the front desk how much it will be so I can plan out how I'm going to pay for it. I'm told $220 for dental cleaning, blood work and a catheter, $75 to extract a chipped molar, and a possible additional charge that couldn't be given until the day of because they didn't know how much the extracted tooth would have to be "filled". No problem. I figure about $350. Fast forward to June 27th. I pick up my dog after her dental cleaning and molar extraction and pay a bill of $451 WAY MORE THAN THE ESTIMATE GIVEN ($220 for the cleaning and $75 for the extraction with a number of extra costs for the surgical material needed for the extraction and for the anestesia and, of course antibiotics and pain meds). None of these surgical instrument costs were disclosed on my estimate the week prior so I was pretty shocked at my bill. If that's not enough, I pay my bill of $450 and I inform the front desk girl that my Labrador needs to come in for a cleaning too. She informs me that they are running a sale in July for dental cleaning for $189 (as oppose to the normal $220). After paying my bill, and still in shock of how much the bill was, I think it through on my drive home and decide to call them to ask why I wasn't informed of this upcoming dental cleaning "sale" when I initially booked the appt. a week prior and paid $200 for that visit. Had I waited a week longer, I would've saved $31. Not much to them, but a savings to me no matter how minuscule. I'm given a slew of excuses including "oh you should've known from our email blast," "it's just $31 dollars ma'm. Are you really going to bicker over that?" and "you needed the cleaning right away." Mind you, the doctor said I needed it soon, not the following week. In my opinion, this is one of those vets that's only in it for the money; not for the sake of your dog or your pocket. Glad to see their true colors now and not when my dog is in dire need of medical attention. I'm an animal lover and absolutely cannot stand people who take advantage of families when it comes to their pets. I asked them to honor the sale since they didn't tell me anything when I booked the appt and I planned to bring my Labrador in for the "sale" in July. But I was told flat out "no." I was just told that my dog needs serious invasive surgery and i confronted her and told her i had other opinions that said her option was the worst and then she changed her tune and said i was correct that it was not needed but that she is not a specialist so she wants to charge me instead of referring me$$$$.... but she was telling me my pet NEEDED this and never told me about the other safer better options i was told the day before. already didn't trust this place so I went to other places before this appointment just to be sure. We moved to this area a year ago and set about trying different vets for our 7 animals. Out of three vets that we tried out, we like this one the best. Dr. Diaz is a great doctor - very caring and patient and great with the animals. Sometimes, vets do the best they can, and complications come up. This happens in any medical profession. We have a kitten who was having urinary problems and it took a few tests to figure out what was going on, and the cost went up a bit more than we thought. At no time did I feel like they were only out to make money. The prices for all of our other visits have been very reasonable. We had a vet up north that we loved, and if we did not love this vet we would just drive up there. Highly recommended and they offer all kinds of discounts and specials. read more

THIS PLACE IS AMAZING...Where shall I start? Could it be at how impeccably clean the office was? The wonderful receptionist Christina who greeted us like family? Or the amazing Dr. Mara who treated my two children, I mean dogs, I really mean children, like her own? I was referred to this office by a colleague of mine whose three Schnauzers are patients of theirs after a horrible experience at Doral Centre Animal Hospital. Maria who often fills in at the office, but does not permanently work there was the tech who attended us with Dr. Mara- we were there because my Chihuahua has an internal cough or what they call collapsed trachea. I was there for a second opinion because the Doral Centre was so unpleasant I didn't even trust their diagnosis. Maria calmed both of my dogs, because we also took advantage and brought our Frenchie along for a check-up- she's super hyper, anyway, she even told my dogs "i love you" Maria the tech told my dogs she loved them! Like seriously, that's me! that's the type of dog person I am. I literally stop people to see if I can pet their dogs and I do the doggie voice, and I ask the dogs how their days was - etc. I digress but I'll just say that Dr. Mara has a gift and so does her staff, you have to be an animal person and work with love to treat animals. I never felt rushed, all my questions were answered, everything I was playing was explained to me before, with options to do the procedures or not, or at a later time. They were gentle and patient with me and my dogs, and Christina the receptionist called and followed up with me to see how my kids were doing after the visit. I LOVE THIS vet and I will continue to drive the almost hour it takes me from my home to go there because they treated me and my dogs like family. This past month, I had to travel and my pet-sitter had some concerns regarding the coat of my cat Hunter. I immediately reached out to Dr. Diaz and when my pet-sitter took Hunter to see her, Dr. Diaz took the time to call me and explained her diagnosis and treatment. Dr. Acevedo is a pet Superhero. She was an excellent vet from the moment I walked through the door with my beloved 17 year old Jack Russell terrier, Flaca. But the true test came when Flaca came down with Cushing's disease and had a seizure, and a stroke. In an emergency, she always finds time to see Flaca and patiently response to all our needs and concerns. Flaca has been on the edge of expiring several times, but Dr. Acevedo has always brought her back by prescribing the right medicines and directing me to the best specialists.
