Garbage plate at Schaller's Lakeside, Rochester
    Bruce K.

My friend has been posting pictures of the Schaller's "garbage plate" and so It was on my itinerary during my visit to try one of these monstrosities. Served in a to go box, my meal was as follows: the base is crinkle cut fries and macaroni salad, topped with a cheeseburger patty, then they add "hot sauce" which is a spicy meat chili and then onions, and mustard on top. It is for sure a heartburn city and it was perhaps two pounds of food. I did some damage here, not just to the food but probably to my diet. There was so much here that I skipped breakfast. But it's an experience and should not be missed. [Review 1524 of 2024 - 440 in New York - 22547 overall]

Whenever we visit Rochester-Schaller's is a mist. Our food was GREAT. I had a white hot and the husband a burger. We love all the pickles. Service is great and husband is still amazed that while they do not write down anything-the order is always correct. It;s a casual place with some outside seating if you need it. I am back home in Florida now and wish I could be there again.

Always wanted to stop and try this place and always in a rush. Today I came in with a Hot Dog in mind. Ordered a Red Hot with Cheese & Bacon, Mustard. Delicious. Made to order. Root Beer is the perfect pairing. Will have to come back for the Burger.

    Thank goodness for take out!

We were out on the bike last weekend... trying to clear our "Quarantine heads" haha.... happened to ride past Schaller's and they were open for take out! So excited. We always carry our masks so we phoned in the order from the parking lot, and one of us walked in to pick up about 10 mins later. Found a deserted picnic table in a small park by the lake and had an awesome outdoor lunch. Schaller's burgers are amazing. I got sweet potato fries (yum) - just wish they had some honey for dipping, but not a deal breaker. Onion rings were amazing - look at the pic! Definitely support your local restaurants during this time. Schaller's still on point!!

We came here for lunch today. The employees are amazing. I rattled off a large order and he not only remembered it but got it perfectly correct. They have many food options here. I totally forgot to take a photo of my food but it was inhaled too quickly to remember. It is a Locally owned and operated restaurant that is part of the community. Don't forget they are open year round so you can get a warm meal on a snowy day.

Be still my heart, the family trip to Rochester is complete, now that we've had Abbott's custard (right up the road from Schaller's), and a white hot from Schaller's! Mustard, onions & relish are a must. A little ketchup is okay too. Curly fries and onion rings also good, but if you haven't had a white hot before, this is where you need to try one. It's a pork hotdog...basically bratwurst. This is Rochester history. At it's simple finest. Just don't bring a vegan here!

Mozzarella sticks (best I've had???!?!?! So good!) and a cheeseburger

They serve classic all beef, grilled, hot dogs with any of the following items kosher New York City sauerkraut, freshly grilled onions and peppers, spicy pepper relish, onions, classic pickle relish, Nancy's mustard, and of course ketchup and yellow mustard. They even have veal dogs, Italian pork sausages, and chicken spiedies (grilled chicken cubes in a hotdog bun -- spiedies are an upstate NY invention). I have tried all of these options and they are all fantastic, but I am a purest and love the kosher all beef dog with grilled peppers and a touch of sauerkraut the best. You can also purchase frito-lay bags of chips and bottled/canned drinks. He uses local wieners ...tee hee....from Hofmann's franks based out of Syracuse New York. Lou notes that he thinks that "central New Yorkers prefer the grilled flavor to the classic New York city steamed or boiled hot dogs." This is why he switched to a gas powered grill in 2001. I can't agree more, I love the grill. Lou is super friendly, and he'll chat with you as he prepares your dogs. Its $2 per hot dog. One dog is a great snack, 2 dogs or 1 chicken spiedie is a great meal. I never "plan" to eat here as the hours are dependent on the wether, I usually see them while walking around the commons and can't resist.

Lil Red Caboose is one of the few lunch/dinner spots in the small town of Clyde, New York. It's located on a corner street, on the way to Sodus Point. It's a outside seating, small stand. The Lil Red Caboose offers a variety of different meals such as Hamburgers, Hot Dogs, French Fries, Sausages, Mozzarella sticks, and of course, the Zwiegles Pop-open Hot-Dogs! I stopped by and picked up a meal I remembered having when I was younger, fried mozzarella sticks and a Red Zwiegles Pop-open Hot Dog. I picked up a order number and took a sit in their outside tables. The ambiance was so relaxing, surrounded by greenery with the sound of nature. The meal was out in about 15 minutes. There was [5] Mozzarella Sticks, thick and filled with cheese. It came hot off the deep fryer and the Zwiegles red-hot dog was cooked to perfection, not too burnt with just a slight crisp to it. The food was delicious! With the Zwiegles, typically you fill up the pop-open hot dogs with onions and peppers to enhance the flavor. Sauces were on the house. The meal came out to be $5.50, quite reasonably for the quality and quantity for food!

I stopped at AJ's for a quick and inexpensive bite after the gym. I saw they had a pizza burger on special for just $6.99 and that piqued my interest. I debated not getting a roll suspecting it would be one of the super cheap burger buns, but I just ordered it as is; I was very glad I did. It was made fresh to order in about 8 minutes. When it came out, it was presented open faced on a nicely toasted junior kaiser roll with a good amount of tasty pizza sauce, a load of gooey provolone, and cup & char pepperoni atop the burger, which was a decent size. Everything worked well together and it was like a tasty, meaty, easily handheld piece of pizza. The service was friendly. I believe there was indoor seating, but I ordered at the window and sat at a picnic table outside. I would visit again.

Despite that I keep thinking about what I want to try next time I go. The atmosphere, scale and feel of the dining room is fantastic. It sort of feels like a Rochester version of Cheers. I love that they had all the doors open and the beautiful summer evening climate was enjoyable whether you sat inside or outside. This meant dealing with a few gnats or flies at our indoor table. I started with a Caesar side salad which was very good. The entrees we had were Salmon and Chicken Riggies. The Chicken RIggies were great. Not spicy at all but made-to-order so it could be made spicy. The pasta was perfectly tender but firm, the diced chicken was flavorful and easy to eat. It was THE most successful Chicken Riggie dish I've tried to date anywhere and I took the leftovers home to enjoy for lunch the next day, a rarity for me. The salmon was not a hit. It seemed pretty fishy especially in the areas that were thinner and had become chewier from the grill drying it out. What they call roasted corn is really 'chili powder roasted corn'. The chili powder flavor was quite pronounced and not very well integrated into the dish. It tasted like very ordinary corn with very ordinary chili powder sprinkled on it. I'm sure that isn't how the dish is made but that's what it tasted like. The Cheesy Eddie's carrot cake was absolutely perfect and tasted like it was just made. It's hard to defend the pricing. Our 2 entrees, 1 side salad, 1 soft drink and 2 small glasses of wine and 1 piece of carrot cake ended up being 145 dollars after tax and tip. If the wine pour had been a nice 9 ounce pour I would have had a single glass but I had 2 because they were small. Even with 1 wine this was going to be WELL over 100 dollars for 2 people even before tip. In any head-to-head comparison with something like The Distillery or Genesee Brew House, this pricing is probably out of line. If we go back, it will be with great appreciation for the setting and modest expectations for the food.
