    Plates

Aaaaaah Steve T's. The plates of my formative west side years. I came back very recently for a pre-New Years health kick garbage plate and was reminded of this spot's many oddities. I hadn't been in a while and typically only ever went semi-sober (or absolutely not sober at all), so experiencing this spot with fresh eyes was an experience. First of all: cash only, which is always a sore spot for me. It seems a little selfish in this day and age, especially with so many people not carrying cash most of the time. Second: the plate itself. I used to praise these plates as one of the best around, but my plate this time was flavorless, and the hashbrowns were rubbery and saltless. The meat "hot" sauce had no kick. Never mind the fact that both mine and Colin's plates we completely disproportionate - tons and tons of mac salad with not enough potatoes. A true plate/humanity crime. Add the grease pile at the bottom of the plate to the equation and you've got yourself a garbage garbage plate. Thirdly: your bland plate will put you back $11. Too much. $3 more than almost any other plate in town. So you can't even call this cheap late night eats, which is the category most folks are forced to put this place in since... Fourthly: This restaurant is dirty which means the kitchen is likely dirtier. Two stars for nostalgia and the fact that it is open at 3:30am.

This is where you need to go for the best garbage plate - I've been going there since I was a toddler. Can't recommend it enough. Bring cash. Visited last over Christmas and they definitely had the holiday spirit!! Still doing lots of take-out despite covid-19.

Been coming back here since the days I was a college student nearby. Favorite meal in the Rochester area "The Garbage Plate". Enclosed before and after photos of a properly prepared garbage plate, cut it all up and mix like a salad! Wow what a explosion of taste!

For an old school place like this i expected better. I had the hots & potatoes which the potatoes were bland and the rest was average. I wouldn't mind the price, cash only, and rundown nature of the place if it meant a great plate but this was not. I'm still glad I tried it and i did end up finishing the plate so it's far from terrible.

We take garbage plates through TSA and home to Florida every time we visit Rochester. My mother grew up in Rochester and I grew up visiting my grandparents and other relatives in the area. I would get a garbage plate every single time (usually from here) at some point during my trip up ever since I was a little girl. It has always been such a special and sentimental treat coming here to eat and listen to my mom's legendary stories about going to Nick Tahuo's in the 80s late at night when she was in college. There's nothing even remotely close to a garbage plate past the Mason-Dixon line much less Florida. My boyfriend, brothers, and father all request plates whenever we're in town and we take them shamelessly through TSA and all the way back home! We love Stevie Ts!! Thank you for a lifetime of warm comforting food and memories :)

First time having a plate, and thoroughly impressed. Great food, massive quantity, and maybe the friendliest staff I've met at a diner-style restaurant. We'll be back when we visit Rochester again!

Breakfast. 2 eggs over easy, bacon, home fries, toast.

Update to say in addition to serving up the best Garbage plates in town, they do breakfast as well. From 7am to 11am they got a breakfast special that is a steal..2 eggs, toast, homefries, a meat of your choice for like 5 and change...also comes with a drink. I remember eating their breakfast as a little kid in the 80s. Haven't had it since. As good now as it was then. Still cash only but they got a ATM in the back.

Hot plate. Interesting and way too much food for me!

I was not impressed. I ordered one of their alleged famous hot plates. It was a pile of meadocre food tossed on a plate like a big mess. I had hotdogs. I chose macaroni salad and home fries in it. The hot dogs were good. The home fries were terrible. The macaroni salad was amazing. If I ever go back there, it would be foe that. They are a cash only place. Making it off limits for my business travel expenses because I do everything on company credit card. I paid out of pocket for the meal because I didnt care to look for another place. They had some sort of boring hamburger concoction tossed ontop of everything. It was very dry tasting. I ended up throwing away most of my meal. It was enough food for 3 people. And it wasnt very good.

    Almost done.

One hour down the thruway and you are able to get something that is essentially "non existent " here in Buffalo- A garbage plate from Steve Ts on Lyell ave. For those of you unfamiliar with a "Plate" - it is two hotdogs , or hamburgers- no bun, with two sides - fries- home fries - beans- Mac salad- with your choice of Texas's hot sauce- mustard and onions. Obviously, there are a bunch of ways to get it (or not get it), but what you do get is something that may not seem for everyone but one mouthful and you will be hooked. "Cheeseburger plate, fries, Mac salad, onions only". I don't know why you can't get one of these things in Buffalo. Even if you did, it would never come close to the original. Not only is the food great, but it's also interesting to lend an ear to the counter and hear the associates call out the orders and even recognize people as they come in and place the order for them. If you have never done a "plate", I strongly suggest taking the ride to the Lillac and experiencing Steve Ts.

I reactivated my Yelp account just to write this review. What can I say that hasn't been said before about this place. Currently writing this while housing my grilled cheese plate. I can feel my heart rate slowing down at an incredible rate. It's grease is pumping through my veins like contractor grade Draino. Onto the review. You walk into the mildly "updated" inside of the building, the staff looks at you like you just shit on their front porch. Upon ordering you're greeted with a blank stare and an unmotivated question as to what you would want. The elegant experience of ordering an entire meal in a combined total of 3 words 2 grunts and several awkward hand motions is next level. If you stray from getting "everything" on your plate you're met with a judging gaze, able to freeze you faster than Medusa herself. You then receive your order and pay with cash only. If I could change one thing about Steve T's, it would be absolutely nothing. This restaurant should be certified as a historical landmark. Please never change, you're truly one of the most Rochester Ny experiences.

People of Rochester: What is the matter with you? Are you out of your cotton-picking* minds? How else did you come up with a Garbage Plate? Two cheeseburger patties, slapped on top of macaroni salad, onions, and homefries, covered in spicy meat sauce. Served with bread. Why? "So you can keep it down." You people are crazy...like a FOX. That shit is delicious. One of the tastiest, most disgustingly satisfying thing you can eat when drunk. Emphasis on the disgusting. I fear that if I was sober, I would know better. _________ *I like this expression. I'm not sure why, exactly.

Really amazing food! Definitely a Rochester style grub. I ordered the mac cheese with hot dogs on the top and potatoes.

They had salsa music playing which was cool and something different. Our waitress came a few minutes later to take our drink order and brought the corn tortilla chips which were still warm and very fresh along with the fresh salsa and we asked for guacamole dip which was also fresh and delicious. We ordered our main course, I ordered the vegetable fajitas they came out piping hot so that was good and they had a wide variety of vegetables no complaints from me on that one. It also came with a good sized portion of refried beans shredded lettuce, chopped tomatoes and sour cream along with the Spanish rice one of my all time favorite ways to eat rice. My fiancée ordered the shrimp/steak/chicken fajitas and that also came out piping hot along with the plate of toppings. He said his was delicious as well. The manager came over to ask us how our food was which we gave him honest feedback and said it was delicious. We opted out of dessert but they did have a variety of delicious looking options. So overall a pleasant experience. We will definitely be back.

I love a good burger and have had some truly spectacular ones in my day, so I had high expectations of this place considering the reviews. That was my mistake. The service was really nice although the wait time was a little hefty. Like a hefty bag. However the burger was definitely aimed at the kinds of people that don't have the same sense of taste that I do. For example a ton of tasteless melted cheese with some tasteless meat that wasn't juicy enough for me. It just didn't do it for me at all. The milkshake tasted like Hershey's syrup mixed with creamer. It also wasn't the finest hour of milkshakes. However they are a little local business and apparently the locals really like this place a lot so three stars is fine. I guess. Keep your Zocs on.
