Aaaaaah Steve T's. The plates of my formative west side years. I came back very recently for a pre-New Years health kick garbage plate and was reminded of this spot's many oddities. I hadn't been in a while and typically only ever went semi-sober (or absolutely not sober at all), so experiencing this spot with fresh eyes was an experience. First of all: cash only, which is always a sore spot for me. It seems a little selfish in this day and age, especially with so many people not carrying cash most of the time. Second: the plate itself. I used to praise these plates as one of the best around, but my plate this time was flavorless, and the hashbrowns were rubbery and saltless. The meat "hot" sauce had no kick. Never mind the fact that both mine and Colin's plates we completely disproportionate - tons and tons of mac salad with not enough potatoes. A true plate/humanity crime. Add the grease pile at the bottom of the plate to the equation and you've got yourself a garbage garbage plate. Thirdly: your bland plate will put you back $11. Too much. $3 more than almost any other plate in town. So you can't even call this cheap late night eats, which is the category most folks are forced to put this place in since... We take garbage plates through TSA and home to Florida every time we visit Rochester. My mother grew up in Rochester and I grew up visiting my grandparents and other relatives in the area. I would get a garbage plate every single time (usually from here) at some point during my trip up ever since I was a little girl. It has always been such a special and sentimental treat coming here to eat and listen to my mom's legendary stories about going to Nick Tahuo's in the 80s late at night when she was in college. There's nothing even remotely close to a garbage plate past the Mason-Dixon line much less Florida. When I want a garbage plate the one place I always turn to is Steve.T on Lyell Avenue. I am not sure why they changed their name from Nick Tahoes. Whatever the reason the food still taste the same. I usually get the cheeseburger plate all home fries everything on it.The home fries taste great and the sauce they put on top is awsome. I try not to eat garbage plates that much because it's not the healthiest food . However every now and then I will stop by this place and order one. Maybe one day I will check out some other garbage plates around town but I am not the kind of person who changes what is good already. When I find a good place I usually will go there over and over without trying any other places. Its not a place that you want to bring your family and eat in. I will usually put in my order and when its ready bring it home to eat. The one down fall is the place doesn't accept credit cards. They sell all kinds of merch here because it's become so popular and so legendary within the 585. You can get Steve Mugs, Steve Baseball Caps, and of course, Steve T's. What to get: White Hot if you're not too hungry, Garbage Plate if you are, either way get extra meat sauce. What else: Your mother. If they sold drugs here, it'd be "Steve E's" or "Steve LSD's." Wait a minute, they probably do. This is the place to go if Wimpy (just down the road) is closed and you want a Garbage Plate, because they're open super crazy late. They used to be 24 hours, I'm not sure if they still are, I'd ask Steve, but he's busy working at his other business, a porn studio, named "Steve D's." It's one of the better garbage plates in town, largely because it's modeled after the Nick Tahou's version, because Steve T is himself a Tahou. In fact this place used to be called Nick's but the real Nick sued Steve, and then it was Steve Tahou's I think, but Nick wouldn't let that one stand either, so eventually they settled on Steve T's. It's a shame when families fight like that, but certainly I wish both places well. I think Nick T's tastes better, by a short distance, but Steve T's is open much, much later. If they were connected to the legal system, they'd be Steve QC's. A GP is not a doctor, but you will need one after you eat one. It is probably the worst thing in the world that you could eat in health terms, but if you're into late night drunk college food, it's absolutely delicious. A Garbage Plate basically combines hamburger patties and/or hot dogs with any combination of mac salad, hash browns, beans, coleslaw, you name it. And it covers the whole thing with delicious spiced wet meat sauce - the more, the better. It's greasy and it's enough to stop your heart. Some people love it, a lot of people hate it. Few are indifferent to it. I personally love them, though I never eat them. Speaking of which, if they prescribed medicine for heartburn, cholesterol, etc, caused by their own food, they'd be Steve GP's. So... Definitely one of the top 5 GPs in the home town of GPs, but lagging just a little behind Wimpy, Nick's, and maybe Taci's in terms of taste. Mentioning Tacis implies Tacit complicity which is completely false. If they were selling old Vinyl records, they'd be Steve's LP's. Edit: just found out they are, apparently, still open 24 hours. A lot of former 24 hour places have stopped doing the 24 hour thing of late. Really glad that this one has not. It isn't Nick Tahous anymore, but is family owned. I haven't been there in almost 30yrs. So I was excited. The woman remembered everything ordered by our entire family. It was chaotic as my family was all over the place with what they wanted. She was patient and delivered. My daughter was a grump and complaining (typical teen). I think the entire review can be summed up as follows: Nick Tahou's is way better. But this is great for the western suburbs. If I had to gripe, it's that you have to ask for extra toppings (mustard, onions, meat sauce) just to get an acceptable amount. I ate through my toppings in no time. Since I don't live in Rochester anymore, a garbage plate is always on the to-do list when I'm in town. On my most recent trip home I stopped in around 12am (I know this place starts to get packed around 1:30/2am). The place wasn't overly crowded at the time so we were able to order fairly quickly. We ordered a burger & chicken finger plate w/ meat sauce. One note is that the plates are very big!!!!! Years ago I'm pretty sure I could eat one by myself but on this trip I shared one with my friend. I always love the plates but always think the mac salad needs some salt on it. Overall, it's a Rochester MUST HAVE! And I recommend a stop to Steve T's for people who have never experienced a garbage plate as well as locals. read more
