When I first moved in, it sounded like a freight train was taking off when the second stage kicked in, and papers/curtains would literally fly around the room. I've had two other techs come look at it so far. The first tech disconnected the second stage, which caused a ton of humidity issues last summer. The second tech said he could dump the extra air in the garage or outside. I gave up last year and ran a dehumidifier to make it through the end of summer. This summer, I decided I'd try one more time before looking at replacement units. Ben Fraser from Roscoe Brown came out and spent quite a bit of time digging in. He found one major issue - the TXV was not set properly, so the unit was not cooling properly. He reconfigured the valve and reconnected the 2nd stage. Finally, he adjusted the airflow to be much more reasonable for the ductwork. The result is much cooler air, much better dehumidification, and no more freight train! It's not perfect, but it will keep me from having to buy a new unit for several more years. The price was fairly high compared to some of the non-name-brand techs, but the results were great. I was happy with the price considering the results.

My HVAC was having issues keeping up upstairs, and insulation was pretty thin in my attic (there…read morewas one bay with none at all). I decided to call Koala to get a quote. The quote: they were pretty backed up getting one scheduled, but once we did, they arrived when they said, communicated well, gave a reasonable price, and let me know about an NES rebate that would pay for nearly half the cost of the job! With the rebate, it was a no brainer to proceed with the work. The work appointment: communication around the appointment was a disaster (this is the minus 1 star). The first time they showed up on the wrong day. I was at work, so the install didn't happen. I called the office and got it rescheduled on the day it was originally supposed to be. I made it clear I was only available during a specific window on that day. On the proper day, the crew showed up several hours early, and I wasn't available. No communication or anything. I called the scheduling center and they apologized and sent the crew back out a couple of hours after the original appointment. The crew: friendly guys and great communication. They got to work quickly, put down plastic to keep from tracking spray foam and other attic ickiness on to the floors, and brought pictures to show me as the work progressed. They found a major issues with my HVAC unit that 3 other HVAC techs missed - there was a huge hole in the duct work (insert dizzy face emoji here). They fixed that while they were up there sealing the ducts. It took them a couple of hours and they were able to wrap things up. The results: big improvements, but some technical oddness. Overall they accomplished what I was hoping for and for a reasonable price. My electric bill went down about 15-20% and the HVAC keeps up. If I'm nitpicking, they left a spray can and spray gun and some scrap insulation in the attic; the insulation wasn't perfectly even (thinner on the edges); and the duct insulation was strange (they spray foamed over the duct insulation joints instead of sealing the actual duct work inside the insulation - so there's not really any air sealing benefits there). Overall, I'm happy with the results, and I'd definitely hire them again.

After the initial job was done it was discovered that we had some gaps. I would not say those gaps were 100% Koala's fault but they took full ownership and got their people out here asap to help me make it all right. Again, it was not 100% their fault but they took ownership and made it right while the other company did the opposite trying to blame everyone else when they had the last clear chance to avoid the entire problem and then lied about what they did and did not do. In any event, a firm's true character is best tested when things go sideways. Koala made no excuses and prioritized their schedule to make this right. Jon, Cody and Ron came out today to make it right and did so in a pleasant and professional manner. Those guys are a credit to the firm and to the industry. If only all construction firms could match this level of integrity and customer service, there would be very little to complain about. Again, they stay in constant contact with me, did what they promised to do and sent a superb team out to my place to make it right. Thank you, BJ and your entire team. I will recommend your firm at every opportunity.

Yes, I have a bit of a geek side to me but this stuff is seriously cool. Some of the projects they can do as well is spray foam insulation, improve indoor air quality or even weatherization. I had them do the insulation and sealing on a major addition project in East Nashville over the summer. My clients were completely amazed at how much more comfortable the "new" addition of their home was this winter. They have been at it long enough that they have some good anecdotal case studies from many of their former clients. Erik and Jeff who own the company are extremely knowledgeable without being on a soap box, very involved in the community and all kinds of nice and easy to work with.
