I feel like I have to give this place 5 stars. The food is 4 to 4.5 (so far) but the fact that it's…read moretiny, local, family run, everything made from scratch just pushes it up that extra notch. Chicken fried chicken was juicy and properly seasoned and the best we'd ever had. Ditto for the green beans and the okra. She wouldn't tell us what she puts in the green beans, but it's some combination of bacon grease and magic, I swear. The okra was fresh cut, fresh battered, fresh fried, unlike every other place I get it where you can tell it's out of a bag. Hot water cornbread was ah-mazing. I only wish I had honey to slather on it along with the butter. White gravy was fantastic, with just a hint of sweetness we couldn't quite put our finger on. Chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes were delicious, but also the only things I can say were on par with some of our other favorites. Prices are extremely reasonable. And the service is as down home and personal as you would expect at a place like Sylvia Mae's. But don't expect quick delivery of your food. Everything is made to order and it takes time, so settle in and be patient. We will definitely return here as often as we can when we are in the area.

I had been wanting to try this place for a long time, so I finally decided to celebrate my birthday…read morehere and I'm so glad I did! At first, I was a little hesitant because the menu is fairly small, but after my meal, I can see why. Every dish we ordered was absolutely a 10/10. I had the chicken with greens and shrimp fried rice, along with the fried green tomatoes and cornbread. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and perfectly prepared. I honestly don't have a single negative thing to say about either the food or the service. This was an amazing dining experience, and I will definitely be back. Highly recommend!

I do want to start with the positives. Our waiter was fantastic. He was very attentive, explained the menu thoroughly, and provided excellent service. The food also came out incredibly fast and piping hot, which is becoming rare these days. We started with the cornbread, and it was easily a 10/10. It was worth every bit of the $12. We ordered the fried chicken, greens, shrimp fried rice, biscuits, and hot water cornbread. The fried chicken was crispy and tender, but it lacked seasoning. I'd give it a 7/10. They served it with a house hot sauce, but surprisingly it had no heat and almost no flavor. I even asked the person I was dining with if they tasted anything because it was like pouring sauce on the chicken without changing the flavor at all. The greens were just okay on their own, but once we added the vinegar they became amazing. That made me wonder why the vinegar isn't incorporated into the greens from the start. The hot water cornbread had virtually no flavor. The shrimp fried rice was cooked really well, but it had an unexpected Caribbean-style seasoning that threw me off. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't what I was expecting, and it made it hard to fully enjoy. The biscuits were probably the biggest disappointment. They were dry and hard. One thing I also noticed is that, for a family style restaurant where you're encouraged to order several dishes to share, the tables feel too small. Once all the food arrived, there wasn't much room left, and even packing up our leftovers was awkward because of the lack of space. One standout that deserves recognition was the iced tea. It had what tasted like a subtle hint of mint and was incredibly refreshing. Easy 10/10. From the cuts of chicken we received, it appears they break down and fry whole chickens, which is perfectly fine. However, at $56 for a fried chicken that lacked seasoning, I found the price hard to justify. Maybe the cooking method or oil contributes to the cost, but I expected much more flavor for that price. Overall, I'd rate my experience a 7.5/10. Would I come back? Yes. I'd be willing to give Roots another chance and try something different from the menu. But when I hear Southern food, I expect bold seasoning and comforting flavors, and that's the one area where this meal really fell short.

Today's choices were liver & onions, beef tips & rice, chicken spaghetti, collards, scalloped potatoes, corn and pinto beans. I ordered the liver & onions, scalloped potato, collards and cornbread. My husband ordered the beef tips & rice as well as the collards and pinto beans. Everything was so delicious but my favorites were the beef tips & rice and the scalloped potatoes. Th restaurant is simple but very clean and the service is polite and attentive. I would definitely come back. I heard they have oxtail on Saturday....oohhh La la!!!!

You get 1 entree and 2 sides with roll/cornbread for about $15. If you want a drink that is extra. If you want something other than fast food but more like what you would cook at home - try it. Everything that my husband and I had I can cook better at home. For starters, I would buy fresh mustard/turnip greens to cook and not get mine from a can. Same with the sweet potatoes. The rice was instant rice that was not cooked properly and was crunchy. When I asked for rice and gravy, the young woman serving me looked confused because there was no "gravy" selection and I had to point to the gravy with the hamburger steak- which by the way was frozen hamburger patties, not fresh hamburger meat hand shaped. So, if that sounds like good home cooking, go for it. I'll probably just stay home and cook.

I made an illegal maneuver that would've made Dale Earnhardt proud. We ambled down a country road for a short distance till we happened upon a double wide trailer with a sign. I was immediately enchanted. My dining companion was not- he was skeptical and didn't want to try it. I went in to get a menu to convince him and was warmly greeted (my favorite thing!). My cajoling worked, and we got a table. It was early on a Monday morning (and a holiday to boot), so we had the place to ourselves. A sweet waitress helped us with tea and coffee and we decided on chicken fried steak with eggs for me and pancake breakfast for him. Now I'll say this- this is not fast food. But it was a crispy, fresh chicken fried steak just like my own grandma used to make. The gravy was PERFECTION, obviously used bacon grease. I was in hog heaven. And the cook (granny herself, I assume) made sure my eggs were exactly to my liking (runny yolks with no jiggly whites). I wish I lived nearby or had a teleporter. I'd eat that CFS once a week! Definitely worth finding this little gem. Oh, and they told me about their small business gumption remodeling the place to prepare for its opening. Small business is my passion, so I was glad to hear the triumphant story. Check it out if you're in the area! (With a detour off 30!)
