I had high hopes for this location because I absolutely love Radici, and everyone has been recommending Roots to me. Unfortunately, it just didn't live up to the expectations I had. I do want to start with the positives. Our waiter was fantastic. He was very attentive, explained the menu thoroughly, and provided excellent service. The food also came out incredibly fast and piping hot, which is becoming rare these days. We started with the cornbread, and it was easily a 10/10. It was worth every bit of the $12. We ordered the fried chicken, greens, shrimp fried rice, biscuits, and hot water cornbread. The fried chicken was crispy and tender, but it lacked seasoning. I'd give it a 7/10. They served it with a house hot sauce, but surprisingly it had no heat and almost no flavor. I even asked the person I was dining with if they tasted anything because it was like pouring sauce on the chicken without changing the flavor at all. The greens were just okay on their own, but once we added the vinegar they became amazing. That made me wonder why the vinegar isn't incorporated into the greens from the start. The hot water cornbread had virtually no flavor. The shrimp fried rice was cooked really well, but it had an unexpected Caribbean-style seasoning that threw me off. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't what I was expecting, and it made it hard to fully enjoy. The biscuits were probably the biggest disappointment. They were dry and hard. One thing I also noticed is that, for a family style restaurant where you're encouraged to order several dishes to share, the tables feel too small. Once all the food arrived, there wasn't much room left, and even packing up our leftovers was awkward because of the lack of space. One standout that deserves recognition was the iced tea. It had what tasted like a subtle hint of mint and was incredibly refreshing. Easy 10/10. From the cuts of chicken we received, it appears they break down and fry whole chickens, which is perfectly fine. However, at $56 for a fried chicken that lacked seasoning, I found the price hard to justify. Maybe the cooking method or oil contributes to the cost, but I expected much more flavor for that price. Overall, I'd rate my experience a 7.5/10. Would I come back? Yes. I'd be willing to give Roots another chance and try something different from the menu. But when I hear Southern food, I expect bold seasoning and comforting flavors, and that's the one area where this meal really fell short. read more

I've been wanting to visit Tiffany Derry's acclaimed restaurant in Farmers Branch and finally got the chance! The space is inviting, casual, bright and comfortable. We started with the fried green tomatoes which were golden brown and crisp. The rhubarb jam made this southern speciality pop. The best part of our meal was the cast iron cornbread and my mother's gumbo. The gumbo had a nicely brown roux and so much flavor. Tiffany is so lucky if her mama was making this gumbo growing up. The cornbread was also next level. The butter was presented under a smoky glass dome and the combo of syrup and salty butter was scrumptious. Hub and I shared the red fish with shrimp fried rice. Roots Southern Table was honestly amazing. I've been a huge fan of Top Chef, and Tiffany Derry has always been one of my favorites. So when I found out we were getting a chance to try one of her restaurants, I was all in. Didn't get to meet her this time (lol), but I've met a few top chefs while living in Vegas, so I'll take the win on the food alone. Keenan, our server, absolutely made the experience. Super knowledgeable, great energy, and honestly just told us what we should order and he nailed it. Every recommendation hit. We started with the cornbread, which is easily in my personal top 5. Then the duck fat fried chicken... I'm not even going to try to describe it properly, just order it. Trust me. The deviled eggs were another standout, and then the greens... I've lived in the South, and I can confidently say these were the best greens I've ever had. No contest. There were about 10 of us, so we got to try a bunch of different mains, and I didn't hear a single complaint from anyone. I had the short rib, and the depth of flavor was insane, simple dish, but it hit hard in all the right ways. Finished it off with the German chocolate cake, and that first bite straight up gave me a Ratatouille moment, took me right back to being a kid in 1984 eating my grandma's birthday cake. Just unreal. Tiffany Derry always has the best menu around! The food tonight was to die for. I got the scallops and my partner got the short ribs. Both were extremely flavorful! Additionally we had the carpaccio as well as the gumbo- well worth the decision to get it! We split a bottle of wine and polished the meal off with the best German chocolate cake. I love Tiffany on tv and was so excited at the chance to visit her restaurant and try her food, and it did not disappoint. We all enjoyed our dishes thoroughly. I had the char-grilled chicken and wow oh wow, it was so amazingly flavorful, and the harissa gave it the perfect touch of heat. I had never had fonio and it was moist and delicious. The fennel salad provided the acid. Such a great dish. The cornbread was addictive. The scallops were cooked well. The short rib was tender. The wait staff was nice (shout out to Tre). Each time we've visited, it has been packed. The menu at Roots has a variety of offerings, all with a twist/elevation on Southern soul food cuisine. We didn't drink them the NA champagne flute smelled like soap and tasted like it too. The NA drinks also tasted like soap. Only downside to the experience was the drinks. A few things I noticed not on par with top chef. Paper menus-understandably since their menu was explained as seasonal. No placenta or change of utensils between appetizers and main course- out utensils placed dirty back on the table when our plates were taken. Fried rice was flavorful and my husbands favorite. We have been to Roots Southern table several time and it never disappoints. We started with their vanilla old fashion which had a nice vanilla sugar rim. Smooth and refreshing. For dinner we had the fried chicken, southern greens, and hop john rice. The chicken is one of the best. I can't think of one better. They fry it in duck fat which gives it a great flavor and texture. The southern greens comes with corn bread/hush puppies for soaking up the greens liquor. I researched restaurants for months for my trip to Dallas. I wanted really good food. Guess what caught my eye on Roots Southern Table's menu? Duck. Fat. Fried. Chicken. AKA The very best chicken you will ever put in your mouth. The best fried chicken of your life. You will swoon. Okay, let's backtrack a bit. This place is small and loud. Crowded. That usually means you definitely want to wait for a table even if you don't like loud restaurants. Next time I think we would choose to dine in their covered patio to cut the noise a bit. We were very glad we made a reservation. About service. The first thing the waitress asked was if we had any allergies. Thank you! She made it so easy for my daughter to order gluten free. Our waitress was knowledgeable about the menu and offered to triple check for gluten free. She constantly checked back with us despite being very busy managing other tables. And the best part: two of our diners have Down syndrome. She treated them like everyone else, talking to them, clarifying information, and making sure they were enjoying themselves. All the staff were friendly, warm smiles, and genuine. Every single thing we ordered was a delight. The peas pod salad (sorry, it was inhaled before I remembered to take a picture). The cornbread and biscuits tasted as if they were from my Grandmother Mildred's Southern Georgia kitchen. The Texas Redfish and fried rice had so much flavor. But that chicken, that perfectly crispy and juicy fried chicken. Oh, my word. It says it serves 2-4 people. It is a lot of chicken. I'm eating the leftovers for lunch in the airport as I type. Since it's so close to somewhere I go to twice a week, every week for 6 months out of the year I have been here twice so far. Once with a volleyball mom friend and once for an anniversary dinner with my husband. On both trips we ordered the fried chicken and corn bread, that's how good it is! On the anniversary visit the server was incredibly sweet and brought us complimentary Champaign and really was so attentive. Whether you're entertaining guest from out of town, having date night, or celebrating your birthday (like I was), you can never go wrong with this establishment. I had the opportunity of dining in with my family as I celebrated 51 years of life, and had the opportunity to see well renowned Chef Tiffany Derry. While there, the waitress provided our table with some delicious champagne to celebrate me. Up next was our food order. I had the Red Fish with Fried Rice . It was sooooo good! I wanted to love this but was so disappointed. The service was awful. We had to continually ask for refills, another beer, extra butter, etc and did not get it more than once. The rectangular booth was awful. It's too large/ tight for the space, we couldn't pass anything and had to yell at each other due to distance and the absurd volume in this small space. The chicken was the star and excellent. The cornbread was heaven but the drop biscuits were unusually dry and hard. All 6 of us agreed this is a one and done for us. read more

I've traveled to Dallas several times on my own, but this trip I brought my 15-year-old and 12-year-old with me for a 7-on-7 tournament and a college visit. I was excited to bring them to Roots Southern Table in Farmers Branch because I've loved it before. Chef Tiffany Derry's take on Southern food is one I've respected for years, and it delivered again. Anytime I visit, I'm looking for dinner and a show. Not in a flashy way, but in the rhythm of the room. It feels like a ballet. Plates hit the pass and are immediately in motion. Servers move with purpose. The kitchen stays locked in. There's urgency without chaos. Watching the line work with that level of focus reminds me why I was drawn here in the first place. If you've never been, the duck fat fried chicken is a must. The crust is deeply crisp with seasoning that runs all the way through the meat. Rich, but not heavy. It comes with biscuits, and before I could even reach for one, both of my boys had already claimed theirs and were halfway through. That alone tells you something. The cornbread is non-negotiable. Sweet and savory at the same time. My son took a bite and said, "This is different than how you make it, but I still love it." That's exactly it. Familiar at its core, just elevated. Add the smoked salted butter and the house-made hot sauce and you'll understand why I wanted both to go. Last time I visited, the redfish came with a crawfish fried rice that I still think about. I was hoping it might still be on the menu, but even with the shrimp fried rice this time, it didn't miss. The rice had depth and the gumbo carried that dark, layered roux you hope for. read more

I always enjoy visiting Roots Southern Table! This time I ordered the gumbo and it was very flavorful. I wish it was a bit hotter in temperature when it arrived at the table. I added some hot sauce as I wanted it a bit spicer. read more
