I must chime in on a recent experience with Southern Cremation and Cheatham Hill funeral home in Marietta. The wife of our very close friend died in late May and her husband decided to have Southern Cremation do her cremation and also do her Celebration of Life service at their Columbarium Chapel. In the days leading up to the service we helped our friend to set up a service and music that he wanted to have. This part went very well and they created a beautiful order of service and set up links for the three songs (on YouTube) to be used. The day of the service was when things went badly. We arrived at 9:30 for the 10:00 visitation and the building was locked and no one was there. When they finally sent someone there it was a receptionist and another employee. The space had not been cleaned and we found food, cups and tissues laying around. When the service was to begin they could not get the song on the screen correctly. When it was time for the second song, they didn't know how to bring it up and had the YouTube page with all of its commercials showing. At the final song, they brought up the YouTube search engine - in front of everyone at the service - and were typing in the name of the 3rd song. They had the links for the songs in advance but didn't know how to use them. Then after the fact, we found out that the streaming was never started. For those friends and family members that were wanting to watch through streaming, they were denied that and we only found out when one of them texted the husband to tell him. There had been additional charges for a Saturday service, additional professional people and for the streaming. No one from Southern Cremation ever contacted our friend to admit to all of the mistakes and apologize for a service that was bungled and disrespectful. Only through him reaching out to Southern Cremations and requesting a refund did they ever correspond with him - but NEVER an apology. For a profession that deals with people in their most vulnerable time, there was no compassion given to our friend and the family. There were other issues but these were just the major problems. Poor professionalism from this business. read more

Michelle our Funeral Director was caring, very informative, and put my daughter and I at ease in making arrangements for the cremation of my husband. She walked us through everything including the cremation process. I highly recommend Southern Cremations of Marietta. My husband was cremated in June and since he is a Navy Veteran and his wishes were to be buried in the National Cemetery, I just called Michelle (5 months after he was cremated and I had his Urn in my home) and told her we had decided to lay him to rest in the VA National Cemetery in Glennville GA where my precious Granddaughter lives. January 5th, I unfortunately lost my Dad. We weren't prepared at all. He wanted to be cremated and I couldn't be happier with my choice to use Sourhern Cremations & Funerals in Marietta. They were very kind and compassionate. They gave us a beautiful place to have our Memorial service and everyone was very pleased with the outcome. They were extremely inexpensive compared to the other places I called. Some wanted as much as $3000 more for the exact same services. The funeral director, Michelle Pittman, was beyond helpful. They all were. I plan on taking care of my own arrangements ahead of time in the near future so my children won't have to worry about anything. If you've been put in the situation to handle a loved one's arrangements, you should definitely talk to Michelle, she was a Godsend in my family's time of need. read more

It would be almost 3 months to the day my mother passed. At 12:30 am, 1,yes,one single man showed up to pick up my mother's body. There's steps. What made him think before leaving he could manage this job alone is beyond my comprehension. My distraught brother had to watch him cover my mother and he had to assist wheeling her body out on a stretcher and into a van. No son should have to do that shortly after losing their mother. The next morning a young man who barely spoke English called and said " hi,how are you today?" Wow,I said my mother just died,I suck. He then offered condolences. He attempted to explain that I needed to come in and basically do everything I had already done. I hung up,called back,spoke with Francesca and went back. There was not 2 documents to sign,rather 20 minutes of forms to fill out. Not anyone could do this,it had to be next of kin and one of my siblings needed to be there. That leaves the sales mgr totally incompetent. She then gets the general mgr Mr. Parker. He apologized and offered an urn vs a cardboard box to pick up my mother's ashes. He explained 2 men are always supposed to be dispatched to a private home. What if there was no brother? He explained the process which was nothing like Mr Baranchak explained. He went on to say my mother would be cremated the following Tuesday and I would receive a call that morning with a time. NO CALL. I had to call at noon to be given the run around again, multiple holds and a call back stating my mother was in the process. No exact time so we could stop our day and say a prayer. I emailed Mr Parker and we met with him the following day to receive our mother and no,not in an urn but a cherry box. I suppose it's better than cardboard. My dogs all came back in wooden boxes nicer than what we received. It should be standard for any packages, remains come back dignified in an urn or anything other than a cardboard box. When I dug a little deeper, I saw there have been many complaints about this establishment and they are not even rated by the BBB,I believe they once were. Despite Mr Parker's attempt to make this right,as I told him,he is only as good as the people who work for him and they leave a lot to be desired. It appears there's a lot of very young, inexperienced people working there and probably for minimum wage. I prayed to God that it was my mother's remains in the box Not a good feeling. I would not recommend this business for any service whatsoever. Read the many reviews, there's many like mine. I should have gone to Mays Ward but my mom just wanted a simple cremation. All the staff made sure that if I needed help with final arrangements they would be there to help and they were, because of there help and understanding I felt at ease laying my dad to rest. Let me start out by saying how beautiful this place is! They have an extremely wonderful memorial garden! They have burial plots. They also offer a mausoleum. What a kind and caring crematory! They made my friend so comfortable with everything. Everyone was wonderful but because of an employee named Michelle. The whole experience that my friend had there getting her husband cremated was an amazing experience. I would highly recommend them. she was even there for my friend days after the cremation, when my friend needed moral support. You could not ask for a better experience plus this crematory was very affordable you would be hard-pressed to find a better experience. I will definitely use this crematory to help me with my future needs with my family. After seeing the experience my friend had here I will recommend them to all the people I know. It was a horrible and overwhelming experience. I managed to deal with their uncaring incompetence, durings mom's funeral, with the help of my beautiful friends. My nephew unexpectedly passed away, he happened to also be my elderly terminally ill father's caregiver. I live 1,000 miles away so I immediately went to help him take care of things and move my dad in with me. Once my nephew's body was ready I called Southern Cremations and explained our situation. I told them that we needed an appt. that week as we needed to move my dad to another state and we were on a timeline. I was assured that we would get an appt. that Friday but once they picked up the body we could schedule the appt. Well after they picked up the body I called to make the appt. whoever I spoke to on the phone said it would be next Tuesday. Unacceptable! I told her what I was told and she said they could not cremate the body until Tuesday. I told her I didn't expect the cremation to be that fast but I just needed the appt for this week so we can make arrangements and pay for the services. Well she put the manager on the phone and she rudely stated "we cannot cremate him until Tuesday!" I told her I understood that but I just need to make arrangements this week and pay so she said can you come tomorrow? I told her I could and she again stated "I cannot cremate until Tuesday!" Once we got there she was pleasant but I regretted my choice .We paid for the cremation and extras and the fee to have my nephew's remains shipped to my home. After about 6 weeks I got a call saying his remains and death certificate were ready and asked if I wanted tracking. Of course I requested tracking but never received it. After a week and no remains I called and the person who answered the phone was very nice but did not have tracking info as the girl who had it was not in that day. She did confirm it was sent and I did receive the package the next day. This place has potential but they need to be more organized and lose the attitude. They need to remember that they are dealing with people who are facing immeasurable grief and experiencing some of the worst times of their lives. We went out of our way to use this place and I regret it. I should have chose something more local and avoided the attitude. read more

Recently upon visiting my parents' grave, I noticed the flower urn was missing. I called the office of Southern Cremation and spoke with one of the ladies and explained about the missing urn. She looked up the contract and ordered a new urn. I was able to deliver a dozen red roses on the Saturday before Mother's Day. Without the help of the office ladies I could not have done this. My funeral director was Kenny and he was outstanding, he was just so kind, he made me feel so at ease. And Maddie, who picked up my father from hospice was so incredibly sweet. And every time I saw her when went back to the funeral home to pick up dad's ashes and then the death certificates she greeted me by name with a a warm hug and asked me how I was doing. My mother passed away on 1/24/2022. Since then it has been a living hell dealing with these people. Southern cremation was referred to me by the coroner at the wellstar hospital. Since I'm out of state, I basically had to do everything remotely, so I visited their website and submitted a request for services. 24 hours later, no response. So I called. No answer. I finally send an email and that's when someone finally returned my call. So after explaining that my mother was to cremated and her ashes were to be shipped to me, the agreed to make arrangements to pick her up that day..... My mother was picked up until after about a week later AND was sent to the wrong location. They never notified me if anything. I had to call and basically call and micromanage everything. So once she gets to the correct location (Marietta), nothing. No call. No email. Nothing. So I call after 2 days and just to find out they need me to sign paperwork. So why didn't anyone call and say that? A few days go by and nothing. So I call again. Apparently there is more paperwork for the insurance company. Again, why didn't anyone call to notify me of this? So I submit the paperwork. Nothing for days. So by this time (after a few weeks has went by, my family decided to have the memorial WITHOUT her remains.) So with all the planning I was occupied, and a week goes by. I email them to check the status of her cremation. They finally call me back and say she's scheduled for cremation and they'll notify me when she's shipped to ensure someone's home to sign for it. 2 days later, I'm coming home for lunch and the mail lady was walking off my porch with my mother in hand. If I had not decided to come home, I would have missed her. They sent her without notifying me!!!! So at the point, my mother has been dead for 6 weeks. And you would think it was over right? WRONG!!! They refuse to send her death certificate. My mother died in the ER. For weeks the Marietta location kept saying they were waiting on the physician to sign it. Just to fine out 4 weeks after her passing that ER doctors don't sign death certificates. How are you a funeral home and not know that? Is that not common industry knowledge? So I provide them with my mother's primary Doctor's info. They fax over the certificate for him to sign..... after 8 days I email them asking for a status update to for them to tell me the fax didn't go through. 8 days to realize a fax didn't go through???? Seriously? So now I'm speaking to managers. They're all agreeing that this is unacceptable and it will be handled. This was March 26th. I called March 28th during business hours and told by Lisa that she had got death  certificate signed and was going to submit it to the state and have it delivered to me. That was over 10 days ago. Still nothing. Now to make matters worse, my grandmother passed this week and we found she left everything to my mother however my family can't access it because we can't prove my mother's death. Anyone reading this, RUN. DO NOT DEAL WITH THIS COMPANY. They will make an already stressful situation a living nightmare. read more

We have a very unique situation. The next of kin lives in CA (98 yrs old) so we're the closest "family" our loved one had. The grandfather asked for us to help him with the process. Southern Cremation, Marietta was referred to be by two different friends. Our communication was great until all communication stopped. I felt once the grandfather signed the bottom line. Our family nor the grandfather was inform when our loved one was pick up from the Morgue or even cremated. I was told several times the can't allow me to do something due to the "laws in Ga", however they did allow me to pick up the remains. I did question this to be informed "the grandfather gave permission" which was verbally. The grandfather gave permission for us to help with this from the very beginning. I had no problems with the police or morgue. I also voiced I would like to view him before his cremation, again wasn't allowed to due the grandfather signing to identify by drivers license. Yes, of course he would select identify by drivers license being he lives in CA. Seem weird that he would need to be identified after the morgue had already done so. But I've never dealt with arrangements before so ok I emailed the drivers license copy. I asked could they possibly call him to get permission, was told they could not call but could resend the paperwork. It already took several weeks to get the paperwork back to the facility due to him only using regular mail and landline. Again, his grandfather is 98 yes old and very old school. Our loved one wasn't pick up from the Morgue for a month. Yes, we assumed paperwork would take a few weeks but they shredded the check that was mailed with the original paperwork. That's on Southern Cremations. I understand you need payment but you made a mistake that could have been corrected. It would have been as easy as owning it and starting the cremation instead of leaving him at the morgue. At this point we're a month from our loved one passing and no hope to view him as his remains has decomposed to much. But again we would have never got that chance because of paperwork. Wait, they had no issue calling for another check and simply could have mailed the proper paperwork for us to view him. Fast forward to picking up the remains. I wasn't going to say anything but they want you to sign a paper stating you had a great experience. Well, I could NOT sign anything stating our experience was great. I'm unable to recall the lady that helped us but she asked if we had any concerns with our experience. She was very pleasant. My husband and I began to highlight some of issues. She seemed in shock and felt it was better to get a manager. Dennis (I believe was his name) came in and seemed irritated. I assume he brief himself on our case and the lady also explained our concerns. He stated he wanted to make things right but always referred back to "GA law" states this or that. Well if "GA law" requires you to have written paperwork to simply view someone then it should be "GA law" to have written paperwork to pick up the remains. The law should also require cremation facilities to inform the family when you pick up and cremate someone. I could go on and on with issues from always being told "they're with a family" with no return calls, waiting on this or that. I'm so disappointed in myself for choosing Southern Cremations. Yes, they have great prices but I would rather pay more to have better communication and professionalism. read more

Every person I dealt with throughout the whole process went above and beyond and treated us as if it was their loved one they had loss.
