My best friend and I were visiting and we wanted to try a breakfast place, and this was one of the closest and well rated place nearby. I wouldn't say I would ever "crave" this place nor would I mention that I've been there in conversation. If someone asked then I would talk about it. It's one of those places that was mediocre to me. The food wasn't all that great. The ONLY items I could recommend is the corn pancakes, (yummy yummy) and the strawberry lemonade. Everything else would have tasted better at ihop in my opinion. They're breakfast menu anyways. My boyfriend who joined us later seemed to enjoy the fried chicken. The service wasn't too bad but she wasn't friendly either. Maybe because it was ONE woman serving the whole restaurant (keep in mind the place is not very big) but still... Her body language told us she good to be bothered and she wanted to get our order and be done. The only reason why I didn't let it ruin my experience entirely is because I felt bad for her. She tried to be somewhat attentive and I know how it feels to be so busy waiting tables HOWEVER she could have been nicer. It's a small little restaurant... The food was good but I didn't find myself mmm'ing and awe'ing like I thought I would. We got the southern fried chicken and the catfish. The fried chicken was yummy. There's something in the batter that tastes great and very unique among all the other fried chicken I've tried. The catfish was fried well but the meat itself was quite mushy. All the sides that came with the meal were good as well. We also got the strawberry lemonade everyone raved about and it was good! The food itself was all great, but not knock my socks off amazing. The service was very nice and courteous but the food did take quite a while to come out. Found this place while browsing through yelp, and I decided to come here. After reading numerous ravings about their lemonades, me and my boyfriend each ordered a mango & strawberry lemonade. And WOW, it was super good, I can tell what the hype was about. If you guys come here, you HAVE TO get their lemonades!! Now moving onto the entrees, I ordered the chicken wing dinner I believe, and my boyfriend ordered the country fried steak. Now when you order a entree, you get to pick two side dishes and every entree comes with a corncake. The corncake was pretty good, I even added the butter which is a must like what other yelpers recommended. My chicken wings were good, but nothing that was out of this world. It was the same situation for the country fried steak. However, one thing to point out is that the are pretty pricey like around $13.95, the portions were decent. This was even better than we anticipated! The host is amazing! I felt like we were guests in his home! Super funny, and some how seems to be able to visit with everyone that walks in the door. The food tasted like it was straight out of my Gramma's kitchen. And to make things even better, my breakfast was under $6 (ask about the specials)! My family has never had a disappointing experience eating at the Southern Kitchen! We take our out of town guests (Italians from Milan) to eat there to give them a taste of this very homey food. From the Strawberry-Lemonade to the catfish and pork chops, it's all GOOD. it tends to be crowded at times since it's a small restaurant, but it is worth the wait. I recommend giving it a try. The wait staff were very attentive and fun. We were so full, we couldn't eat dessert. Next time I'll try to leave room, but the corn pancakes(?) we're so good, I ate too many! read more

I returned to Southern Kitchen for my free birthday meal. If you sign up via their website, you get a free voucher for an entree in the month of your birthday. I came on a Saturday afternoon (by myself) hoping to grab a quick bite and be on my way. It was quite busy with a breakfast/lunch crowd. The service was a bit slow as I don't think they had enough people to go around. One table sat dirty while I waited for someone to come take my order. They might have changed the menu but the entrees now come with 2 sides and not 3 (like on their website). I got the 4pc fried chicken wings and the mango lemonade. I tried the strawberry lemonade last time and I'd have to say that strawberry probably wins the race. Not a bad place; service is always friendly but a bit slower as everything is made to order. BEST FRIED CHICKEN I've had up here in the PNW! Service is FANTASTIC! Our waitress gave us recommendations of what we should try since it was our first time and we were just passing through. They have daily breakfast specials that are as low as $5.95. Today, I tried their weekend breakfast special of creamed biscuits with two eggs and choices from homefries (with onions YUM), hashbrowns or grits, but I added two southern fried chicken to my order. All of that came down to a total of $13.95, and it was so worth it!!! My friend ordered the southern fried chicken with a side of mac and cheese, collard greens, and cornbread cake (very very yummy!) They take card, so no need to worry about not having cash. This place fills up quick, so get there as soon as you can! I've been going to Southern Kitchen since I've moved to this state over 10 years ago. It's a popular restaurant on the corner of 6th and Sprague. Soul food without the pork is rare, but you don't even realize you're eating beef ham! It does get crowded on Sundays (African American culture is to have soul food on Sundays after church service), but always fully staffed and prepared to handle the rush. The only negative is the ventilation; you will leave the restaurant smelling like grease. But other than that, it's a great place to eat. read more

Let's start with the good: Service was phenomenal- Ben was an absolute gem of a server!!! He was attentive, patient, and honest- you can totally trust his recommendations. The peach cobbler- just get it, you won't regret it! The catfish strips- pretty good if you're craving catfish in Tacoma & the Fishhouse isn't open. The cornbread dressing- better than I expected! Super satisfying texture too. In Tacoma with the family we don't eat out much but we decided to do so today. Well when looking for food this is what came up. Went there and got the 6th Ave and ordered a mix of white and dark meat chicken came out and I got the smallest piece of meat from both sides. The food flavor itself wasn't bad. It was cold. It was fresh delicious. Secondly, the food came out really fresh and hot. Had to wait a little while but that's understandable. Now, as far as taste, there was none the chicken was bland, the red beans and rice lacked any seasoning. Honestly, I would've been better off eating at Popeyes. The beans and rice seems as if it was poured from a can and the rice was minute rice, which was under cooked and chunky. Let me start on the mac & cheese. I really liked this place. The food was really good, cooked with the southern charm that it supposed to come with. I had the fried chicken for breakfast and it was a big portion for the buck. The chicken was good with a beautiful flavour and the right amount of saltiness. Overall we really enjoyed this but just know that the portions are big. The space is small but functional. The service was fast and the atmosphere was really nice; I would recommend this place and come back again when I'm in town. Came here for breakfast and enjoyed it, except that my chicken fried steak seemed a bit on the skimpy side, with a nice crust but not a lot of meat; granted, it's not meant to be a large portion but still, it could have been thicker. This is a late review I had food from here on Easter, I had ordered to go. This is as close to southern food as you can get here in Tacoma. The mango lemonade was great however the fruit pieces kept getting stuck in the straw. We stopped by for lunch today on our way to Olympia. I'm so very glad we did. It's a dive, not doubt, but the food was fantastic. Our server, Ben, really made the visit. So friendly, so willing to tell us what his favorites are. We each ordered something different, fried chicken, catfish, brisket, mac n cheese, corn bread stuffing, corn, mashed potatoes and gravy. Everything was so delicious. The corn bread stuffing I'd be willing to drive to Tacoma for by itself. We were surprised to be served these corn pancakes as an "appetizer"...also worth the drive. It's a whole new way to eat corn bread for me. Having sworn we couldn't eat another bite, we ordered peach cobbler to share. We all assumed it would be a single piece of cobbler. Yoooo! This spot is a small place (my favorite) and the host, server, cashier Ben did a great job of serving 13 people taking phone orders and making sure everyone was OK! Food was amazing certainly felt like I was eating my granny's food and that's a huge compliment! My wife had short stack (which she could only make about a third of the way through it so big) and some hashbrowns. All the food was very good, service was very good, people are very friendly.
