Southern Kitchen remonds me of the great home cooking I enjoyed when living in Charleston South Carolina. Their southern fried chicken tastes just like I remembered it and the fried okra was just as good, too. The staff was welcpming and warm. The setup in the dining room worked well with my wheelchair both getting in and out of the restaurant and sitting at the table. It's an experience I plan on having again real soon. The parking wasn't set up for my van with a ramp but I found street parking that allowed me to deploy my ramp on the sidewalk and roll into the restaurant with ease. I look forward to my next trip.

Come to Southern Kitchen in Tacoma Washington to get your soul food cravings satisfied!! Both Kevin Hart and Guy Fieri have visited here!! We love their fried chicken, greens, catfish, corn cakes with butter and honey naturally, mango lemonade with whipped cream on top, and sweet potato pie. Great folks here who know how to cook and serve freshly made soul food. Southern Kitchen really satisfies leaving you questioning just how quickly you will come back.

It's just like being invited to a family barbeque, with down home southern cooking! Been here a few times. Got the fried chicken plate. Chicken was piping hot out of the fryer with lightly seasoned crisp coating and juicy chicken. Collar greens were done very well and very mild. Not too much spice or vinegar. Mac and cheese was good, I liked the crunchy bread crumbs on top. Not a creamy Mac and cheese more of a hearty one. Came with a cornbread pancake which was a fun addition. We also got the hush puppies which were hot and done perfectly. Mango lemonade was sooo flavorful. Casual, small place and our server was very polite, friendly and checked in on us. Would go again!

Best soul food I have found on this side of Washington. Sweet tea reminds me back in Virginia #757!!! Service was A1 and was very welcoming. Everybody made you feel like you were at grandma's house again.

Have never eaten here without having an outstanding experience. Food is fabulous and service is so friendly and welcoming. Highly recommend over and over again!

Had the brisket at Southern Kitchen and absolutely enjoyed it! The brisket was tender, flavorful, and perfectly smoked, and the sides were delicious. The staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming, and the restaurant is absolutely adorable. I will definitely be back to try the fried chicken and catfish!

It WAS the catfish strips, collard greens and fried okra.

Everybody adding the menu and pictures of the food. I decided to do a little different. The WAS the catfish strips, collard greens and fried okra but you cannot tell 'cause I ate it all! Been coming here for years! Get yourself in there and have some great eats.

From the moment we sat down, we felt right at home. We ordered the fried chicken, catfish, hush puppies, greens, mac & cheese, and mashed potatoes with gravy--and every single bite was packed with flavor. The chicken was crispy and juicy, the catfish was fried to perfection, and the sides tasted homemade, like something straight from a Southern family kitchen. We also had the strawberry and mango lemonades topped with whipped cream, and they were the perfect sweet touch--refreshing, creamy, and delicious. The service was friendly and welcoming, and the vibe of the place just made us want to stay a little longer. Southern Kitchen is the kind of spot you recommend to everyone--and definitely a place we'll be coming back to.

Such a delicious place. We ordered the chicken fried steak breakfast and the waffles with sausage. There was nothing left. Service was friendly. This place truly reminded me of down south as if I was eating in a diner down there! Small seating but not noisy at all when we went. Definitely want to go back for lunch or dinner.

This is my new favorite place for Southern food! While in Tacoma, friends and I decided to head to Southern Kitchen. We could not find parking at the restaurant, so we parked a block away and walked over - parking is sparse. We arrived shortly before Noon on a Saturday and it was still pretty crowded. Smaller establishment, clean and inviting. Our server was amazing - friendly and attentive. We ordered: The Fried Chicken Sandwich with mashed potatoes, a Fried Chicken Plate with greens and mac and cheese and Fried Chicken Wing dinner with mashed potatoes and corn. They start you off with corn cakes, which were really good. The chicken was perfectly fried and remained moist; the sides were all great - we all raved about the mashed potatoes. We also ordered the Blackberry Lemonade which was tasty. Side note: We initially wanted to try the Brisket as well, but by Noon they were already sold out, so if you want the Brisket, be sure to get there early. The portions are generous, but the dessert we ordered to go, which was the peach cobbler, could have fed us all! Great prices and service - we are already planning our next outing to Southern Kitchen! .

OH EM GEEE! Y'all...ALL the food was scrumptious. The CORN BREAD...oh, the corn bread. Took all the power NOT to gobble it all up before the entree. The fried okra-just right, fried green tomatoes-to die for. The tea, served up in good ol' Mason Jars! Service was friendly, welcoming and attentive.

Southern Kitchen is Amazing! I'd driven by several times, but stopped in for the first time today. The ambiance is so colorful and inviting. While they were cooking my food (Gloria's Southern Fried Chicken Plate), I had the honor of meeting with and chatting with the Owner Ms Gloria. A bright and interesting woman who is always surveying everything, to ensure that all aspects of the dining room and staff attentiveness meet her high standards. The food was delicious. Great place to stop in for fresh comfort food and relaxation. Michelle W., Puyallup

Charming cafe serving up comfort food in Tacoma! We came for brunch on a Tuesday and was greeted by the pleasant staff behind the counter as we sat ourselves. Menu was nice and easy, not overwhelming, one side was breakfast the other lunch. We ordered the Cajun catfish strips, which were soft fried, fried chicken was our table favorite and a bunch of sides. Corncake 7/10 Mac&Cheese 7/10 Yams 8/10 Greens 7/10 Red beans & rice 7/10 Hush puppies 8/10 Sweet potato pie 7/10 Overall the food was average but service welcoming and we think they're worth returning, we enjoyed ourselves!

Not on the menu, but Ben suggested mixing the Mango and Strawberry Lemonade together. Okay, YOU GOTTA TRY THIS!!!

Straight cuts back-to-back. Whoever had control of the music understood the assignment. The atmosphere was chill, welcoming, and just had that cool, laid-back energy. The customer service was amazing as well. The lady at the front greeted us with such great energy that it instantly set the tone for our visit. Now let's get to the food. I had the catfish with collard greens, black-eyed peas and rice, plus white bread. My best friend had cod with mac n yams, red beans and rice, and cornbread. The sides actually came out before the entrée, and we were so hungry that we completely forgot about taking pictures of everything. The food was definitely giving comfort-food energy and was top tier overall. The catfish? Whew, so bomb and full of flavor. Oh and let's not forget the homemade tartar sauce. If I had one small critique, some dishes leaned a little more on the salty side for our preference, but not enough to stop us from coming back. We were actually too full to even try dessert, and now it's officially on our to-do list for the next visit. Overall: good food, good vibes, good music, and great customer service. The owner is delightful and engages you in conversation as she packs the food . The restaurant is showing its age, but remains one of the remaining soul food restaurants in South King County in Washington. I had the fried catfish, chicken, and fries. The thing about soul food is that it all about the seasonings. Now, I prefer the cornmeal/flour coating over batter; the owner does this well. The catfish was well seasoned and the fish was tender. This is the fine line between frying it until it's as dry as the desert or perfection as was done here. The same was for the chicken wings. Light coating, crunchy, and seasoned well. Now her cornbread is good, but she should throw her fires in the trash. They are overcooked and just a let down to an otherwise nice lunch experience. Since she only does take out or cater, the place looks more like a place of storage than a restaurant. It is quiet with mini refrigerators displaying desserts and soda. Surprisingly, the owner does not serve shrimp. A bit of a surprise and I would quickly get them for lunch if they were prepared as well as the catfish. I would rate higher, and keep in mind the the prices are higher than you would expect but happy to pay again if she smoothes out some of the edges of her space and sides that accompany such wonderful catfish and chicken.

The Hoe Cakes were the best 4/5 but tasted like buttery cornbread, good, but nothing special. The Mac N' Cheese was 3.5/5 and were tasty and very cheesy. The classic greens were tasty but came in a small ramekin 3/5. The UNC's wings were okay, tasty and crunchy, but we've had better wings at dozens of restaurants 3/5. The pork chops were decent but dry 2.5/5. The steak was a bit fatty, gristly and bland 2.5/5. A three rating being average. Service was attentive but nobody bothered asking how the food was or we would have openly told them. For the price, there are much better options elsewhere. Awful in every way. The catfish was edible, but that's about it. The ribs were an abomination! No smoke, no seasoning, chewy, and overcooked, no char, no grill, no thanks! The sides , were even worse, bland over boiled Mac & cheese, with no seasoning, and you can't even call that red beans and rice. It's as if white folks cooked soul food for the first time ever. God awful. If I was in town one more day, I would have taken all that nasty food back up there and left it there. Gross. Dumped it all in the trash and went to Wendy's which was also awful.

Good ol' Comfort Food!! Fresh + Flavorful + Friendly Service = An Experience I'd want again and…read moreagain! Ordered the original Prawns for my son, they were dipped in a nicely seasoned batter then fried until crispy, jojos were seasoned so well my son didn't even eat them with ketchup. I ordered the catfish dinner that came with two sides. Catfish was fresh, well seasoned and crispy. The greens were so rich & flavorful you can tell they've been simmering slowly to create a bold hearty broth. The Mac & cheese was seasoned to perfection, this was grandmas baked Thanksgiving Mac not aunties Mac. I've had side dishes from plenty of "soul food" spots around town from Caribbean to BBQ and every place tries to do their own spin which turns out lackluster but these sides capitalized on comfort and make you feel like you just left grandmas kitchen with a plate of food. Everything was piping hot and did I mentioned seasoned?! Seattle Soul Kitchen clearly wants their customers to feel like family eating delicious comfort food and that was our exact experience, I personally can't wait for them to open their first casual dining restaurant because I can see how inviting and warm the staff are from the quick interaction we had picking up our order. Straight up and down 10/10 would recommend!

I went to check it out and they told me they use satellite locations to advertise their business. They have a their store in West Seattle. They have a descent selection of food. I bought a Catfish Basket with Jo Jo's & a Soul Roll. The Soul Roll is like Egg Roll with Turkey/Greens/Mac N Cheese. The Catfish was good and the Soul Roll was good. I'd recommend this place to everyone!!!
