I was so excited to see Lao sausage on the menu, I knew we had to get that. The clams and mussels with Lao sausage were hands down my favorite dish - so savory, unique, and packed with flavor. I know it would be something my mom would have loved to try! The collard greens with neck bone meat were another standout. Every bite was unforgettable. The wait here is no joke, so I highly recommend making a reservation. I think we waited an hour and half to get seats for two, but worth it! We were fortunate enough to be seated after closing, and despite the long wait, the staff remained incredibly kind, welcoming, and accommodating. Their hospitality made the experience even more special. So shoutout to the staff! The only dish that didn't wow me was the trout - it was a little mild and could've used a squeeze of lemon to brighten the flavors. We chose Communion because of the positive reviews. My family of four went to Communion on Thursday 8/13 at 5pm as this was the latest reservation available on Wednesday 8/12. There were people waiting outside when we got there and only a few tables were seated. They seemed to space out the seatings to give the kitchen time to prepare food for the tables. We had high hopes as we love Southern food. We ordered the Sweet Potatoes Hoe Cakes, Mac N' Cheese, Classic Greens, UNC's Wings, Pork Chops, and the Grilled Berbere Steak. The Hoe Cakes were the best 4/5 but tasted like buttery cornbread, good, but nothing special. The Mac N' Cheese was 3.5/5 and were tasty and very cheesy. The classic greens were tasty but came in a small ramekin 3/5. The UNC's wings were okay, tasty and crunchy, but we've had better wings at dozens of restaurants 3/5. The pork chops were decent but dry 2.5/5. The steak was a bit fatty, gristly and bland 2.5/5. A three rating being average. Service was attentive but nobody bothered asking how the food was or we would have openly told them. For the price, there are much better options elsewhere. Had an awesome dinner at Communion last Sunday. Parking was challenging to say the least. There was an underground parking lot across the street but it belongs to the apartment building apparently so we had to find parking several streets away. Started the meal with Sweet Potato Hoe Cake. This had cornbread like texture but felt softer, smoother, quite moist with a sweet honey butter syrup base. BBQ Shrimp tasted out of this world delicious: very fresh head/tail on shrimp cooking in garlic butter, Metier coconut porter. The good to the last drop sauce had bold flavors although quite salty, just perfect for dipping the focaccia in. Unc's Wing was equally endearing: rubbed in a 13-spice blend, with perfect crispness and plump, juicy flesh beneath the coating. Butter-basted cabbage was a rare treat: basted with butter that accentuates the sweetness of caramelized cabbage. Miso butter sauce a great match. The drink I ordered was less intriguing: Kinfolk (bourbon, Jamaican, rum, Cynar, and pecan liqueur) was bourbon heavy, very balanced nonetheless just not memorable. My family came to Washington over the past weekend and suggested we do a brunch. We were told this place was very popular for Sunday brunches. We made reservations but ended up showing up close to their transition to dinner. Due to the lateness, it became more of an intimate setting for us. Also because of the lateness, many of the high-demand brunch options were either sold out or very limited upon arrival, particularly the Catfish & Grits and Grilled Pork Chop. I did not have the pleasure of trying those meals because I am vegetarian, and I elected the Root Vegetarian Hash with fruit. This meal was a 5 out of 5 for me. The perfectly seasoned squash, acorns, and yams combined to inflict a Killer Instinct - "Ultra Combo" on my palate that almost put me in a food coma. Hahaha! I'm such a nerd. But yes, it was that good! A lot of my family and friends raved about their food. Portion sizes were above average and a bit pricey, but everyone seemed overly pleased with their selections with one caveat. One of my friends said Unc's Wings were average and on the salty side. It is a small spot (sorta) so you kind of get in where you fit in. We ended up at the bar and honestly it worked out perfectly. Now let me talk about the food because that cabbage had no business being that good. I know that sounds random but it was my favorite thing and I did not see that coming. I also ordered a non alcoholic drink and even though I cannot remember the name it was really good too. This was hands down my favorite meal of my weekend trip. I found this spot through TikTok, and it came highly recommended. We didn't have a reservation, but after about a 10-minute wait, we were lucky enough to snag two seats at the bar. I'm not used to eating whole fish, and I don't think I'd even had trout before, but this dish was mouthwateringly good. The fish was crispy, hot, and perfectly seasoned. The béarnaise sauce really set it off. There were so many layers of flavor and texture, and everything just worked together perfectly. On top of that, the presentation was stunning. I posted it on my Instagram story and immediately had people asking where my food was as from. This meal was very memorable. I have zero notes. It's easier to get the reservation for the bar seats which is what we did. Waited for another 10-15 minutes after we checked in to get seated. Their menu is small on two sides of one sheet. To start, I got the Overcast cocktail. It went down smooth, but immediately felt the warmth of the alcohol afterwards, so there's definitely some booze in there. For food, I got their grill pork chop. It was a thick cut loin chop, over a tasty savory sauce. There's a little bit of a sweet chutney on top. Pork chop was not overcooked, and has some juiciness and bounce left. The artwork is amazing, great music in the background and all around great vibes. We started with cocktails and then ordered: Unc's Wings: these were probably some of the best chicken wings I've had in a while! Perfectly fried and moist at the same time. Busy busy busy but worth the wait! My partner and I visited a while ago for my birthday and it was absolutely essential to have a reservation on a Friday night. Even with our reservation, there was still a bit of a wait. We got sat right near the kitchen which was engaging because we could see some of the dishes get cooked and made. We ended up ordering the special salmon for that night and it seems that there are rotating main dishes. We also got a side of collard greens, mac and cheese, and fried chicken which were all so good! Our salmon dish was cooked perfectly and had a super flavorful sauce that had crayfish in it as well! And the hostess was happy to get us set up with drinks while we waited. Also, you really should secure a reservation. By the time I finished my first drink, we were being seated by our waitress, Kristina. Flawless service by the way. No issues just praise. She gave food and drink suggestions and the drinks just magically kept refilling themselves like I was at Hogwarts or something. Let's get into the plate plates. I was hungry. Sure. 415. I was visiting Seattle to look for an apartment prior to my big move. This place happened to be within walking distance and was actually my first meal here. And it didn't disappoint.
