Serious Soul is a take out and cater only restaurant. The restaurant is a one person show and the owner has operated with this model for some time. The owner is delightful and engages you in conversation as she packs the food . The restaurant is showing its age, but remains one of the remaining soul food restaurants in South King County in Washington. I had the fried catfish, chicken, and fries. The thing about soul food is that it all about the seasonings. Now, I prefer the cornmeal/flour coating over batter; the owner does this well. The catfish was well seasoned and the fish was tender. This is the fine line between frying it until it's as dry as the desert or perfection as was done here. The same was for the chicken wings. Light coating, crunchy, and seasoned well. Now her cornbread is good, but she should throw her fires in the trash. They are overcooked and just a let down to an otherwise nice lunch experience. Since she only does take out or cater, the place looks more like a place of storage than a restaurant. It is quiet with mini refrigerators displaying desserts and soda. Surprisingly, the owner does not serve shrimp. A bit of a surprise and I would quickly get them for lunch if they were prepared as well as the catfish. I would rate higher, and keep in mind the the prices are higher than you would expect but happy to pay again if she smoothes out some of the edges of her space and sides that accompany such wonderful catfish and chicken. read more

Omg, I randomly stumbled across Serious Soul in Auburn and had no idea this place even existed. I stopped in because I was craving macaroni and cheese, and wow, it was so good. Sweet Owner, But Disappointing Meal I was greeted by the owner, who was such a sweet lady--very warm and welcoming, which I truly appreciated. I ordered one wing, one fish filet, and fries. I also picked up a grape soda in one of those old-school bottles, which was super cute and nostalgic. My coworker got the 5-piece wing dinner with mac and cheese. Unfortunately, the food just didn't hit the mark. The chicken had an off taste--possibly due to old grease or something sour--and neither of us could really finish our meals. Me and my two children wanted to take an adventure to eat some good food. We originally drove to Auburn to try "happy crab", which we didn't know had been sold and was closed. We didn't want to drive all the way home (Puyallup) and decided to look at what was in the area. Serious soul popped up and was close so we decided to go there. I am so happy we did. I'm pretty sure happy crab would've been great, but serious soul was a great gem to find. We ordered chicken and waffles, chicken and greens, chicken and fries, catfish and greens and pecan pie as well as velvet cake and everything was absolutely phenomenal. This was cooked/baked by one person, she was a one-woman show and was so sweet! I can't wait to return even though I live quite awhile away, but it's worth the drive considering we don't have places like this anymore. I've been here twice. I was looking for a chicken breast, but they were out of white meat and I settled for chicken strips. I had the catfish and fries, and red beans and rice as well. I don't know if it was an off day, but everything was a touch bland for me. The lady there was very nice. Everything seemed a touch on the expensive side. My visit still merited five stars, but I came for the brisket, and arriving at the tail end of the day, brisket was sold out. I should have planned better. So I adjusted my order and had some pulled pork and catfish, as well as an order of hush puppies. Excellent Catfish - the best in the south end of the county! This is the catfish I have been searching for around here. The hush puppies were light and tender on the inside, and just the right amount of perfectly crispy on the outside. So delicious. I'm not usually a pulled pork fan, but this was goooood pulled pork, with sweet sauce with a shadow of light heat. Perfection. I made a couple of odd little sliders, using hush puppies sliced in half and spoonfuls of the pulled pork in sauce. So very yummy. 10/10, no notes. Will be back! read more

1 star for the food, 1 star for the location, and minus 3 stars for stealing from homeowners across King and Pierce counties -- let me explain. In short, the owners are crooks. They seem like great people at first, but you will soon learn the truth about them. I hired them to complete a commercial remodel project for my business. What happened next seems to be a pattern that they've "perfected". Rod showed up and started working, claimed additional unforeseen issues, requested more money, and when I pushed back with a different solution, Rod was extremely rude and disappeared, never to be seen again. I eventually got ahold of Dee, and she assured me that Rod would reimburse me so I could hire another contractor to complete the work. That never happened. I've heard similar stories from a handful of homeowners now - once they realize they can't get more money out of you, they disappear. While trying to get my project completed and recover money for the unfinished work, I discovered a news article about them in the Kent Reporter. It says, Diona, the lady that everyone describes as "the sweet lady behind the counter," pleaded guilty in King County to unregistered contracting and was ordered to repay more than $17,000 to an elderly victim after they (Rodney and Diona Brady) already received $31,000 for multiple projects that were never completed. The article also notes there was an arrest warrant for Rodney Brady related to the same incident. I've been living and operating my businesses in and around Seattle for over 20 years now, so I naturally have an extensive network in the area. I've heard the same story about "Rod and Dee" from too many people now, so I feel compelled to share this info. Needed a place to stop for lunch and had never been in the area. It was the most amazing lunch! The fried okra was the best we've ever had and my grandpa loved the tastes of his childhood with sweet potato salad, delicious collars. Everything we had was devious right down the sweet potato pie. My roommate and I came down around noon when they opened up. The restaurant was run by a husband and wife (and presumably their two kids). I asked if they had oxtails since it's not on their menu, and one of the kids called their mom (who was at the grocery store) to see if they can pick up the ingredients for oxtails. They said they could if we could wait, and we agreed! We also ordered Red Beans and Rice, Chicken & Waffles, and were so surprised that they offered us 2 slices of cornbread and 2 drinks ON THE HOUSE while we waited! It really wasn't that long of a wait, but regardless the food was some of the best I've ever had! The chicken was big, crispy, perfectly seasoned and contrasted well with the fluffy, sticky waffles and syrup. The Red Beans and Rice was smoky and warm, like a cross between chili and bbq baked beans, but the main event was by far the oxtail. I ate the whole setup with just a plastic spoon (woah!) and needless to say the oxtail was rich and hearty, covered with a brown gravy and white rice. Feel free to take your dentures out for this one, the oxtails melted in your mouth. Altogether, the meal was about 60 dollars, but we tipped well and told them we would most definitely return with our families for more. If you're in the area and want quality food that is definitely good, sure, this is your place. The lady who served/cooked us was super nice too. There is no indoor seating, only outside or to go. Food: my catfish was fine, unseasoned, and it's pretty much on par with other soul food places in Tacoma, such as Pacific Southern Kitchen. Fries were good but unseasoned. The fried chicken was definitely different in that the coating was super thin and unseasoned. See the trend here? The potato salad was nice, very mustardy but that's all I could get out of it. Corn bread was fine, kind of low-key, very forgettable. Honestly, I prefer the buttered biscuit's. Finally, the Mac n cheese was the star. The consistency and cheesiness was great...but??? I am glad I found this little gem on my way back from camping. It's a small very casual clean place with two tables inside, but it's best for take away. I was greeted by the owner Diona who made all the food to order. Service was fast and friendly, and the food all looked amazing. I ordered the fried catfish with a side of hush puppies and my spouse got the oxtail. We also got a small side of fried okra. The catfish was perfectly cooked and just the right amount of salt, though I personally would have liked a touch more seasoning. It was still very delicious. The hush puppies were different than any I have had before. Kind of the texture somewhere between a traditional hush puppy and a donut or beignet. Very fluffy and moist and tasty. The okra was very good, big pieces that tasted fresh without too much breading, and well seasoned. Now, the oxtail is what stole the show! Juicy, tender, fall off the bone. The gravy was delicious and the mashed potatoes were buttery and perfect. You gotta go try it, but call ahead because it is not available every day. The downsides was the prices, which were pretty high, and the fact that they only sell canned drinks (I was really hoping to get some iced tea). THE BEST FOOD I HAVE HAD IN THIS STATE. I went here for the first time recently and I can not shut up about it. we got a rack of ribs, pulled pork, potato salad, hush puppies, and a slice of pecan pie. everything Was cooked to perfection. The meat was tender (ribs fell right off the bone) the hush puppies were the perfect balance of substantial and delicate with a complex flavor palette (the way they should be) and the potato salad was so good I bought a second to take home to enjoy with our leftovers today. The woman running the show Dee was incredibly lovely. I have not one bad thing to say about this place. I also had the fried okra and fried chicken on a different visit. Everything I've had here has been top notch. The only caveat is that she needs help. We went here for a after church Sunday brunch, and we luckily just stumbled upon this establishment. It is very baby friendly. There are not many tables and chairs, so plan accordingly to dine in. Dining out may be more convenient. Also, food is prepared in small batches and as it is ordered. Therefore wait time may take a bit longer than your ordinary restaurant. Good food takes patience! Items we wished we didn't get: Fried Chicken Fries Catfish Hush puppies Why? The seasoning was not there. We had to add salt for goodness sakes. These items should have had more heat and spice. The items which were seasoned well: Fried Okra (Big chunks) Collard greens (flavored with spices and BBQ pork) Our bill for these 2 orders with extra okra came out to $85.00 without tip. Only Soul food in the neighborhood close by in auburn other than NANA's kitchen in Kent. Owners are local and business is black women owned. The owner is such a sweet lady and interacts well with her customers. I've ordered here about three times now and she's very considerate. There's seating areas but I think most locals just get take out. The food is authentic and portion sizes are big. The price may be a bit on the higher end. Definitely recommend the okra and the amazing sides. The potato salad and the Mac is a definite hit with the kids.
