Serious Soul is a take out and cater only restaurant. The restaurant is a one person show and the owner has operated with this model for some time. The owner is delightful and engages you in conversation as she packs the food . The restaurant is showing its age, but remains one of the remaining soul food restaurants in South King County in Washington. I had the fried catfish, chicken, and fries. The thing about soul food is that it all about the seasonings. Now, I prefer the cornmeal/flour coating over batter; the owner does this well. The catfish was well seasoned and the fish was tender. This is the fine line between frying it until it's as dry as the desert or perfection as was done here. The same was for the chicken wings. Light coating, crunchy, and seasoned well. Now her cornbread is good, but she should throw her fires in the trash. They are overcooked and just a let down to an otherwise nice lunch experience. Since she only does take out or cater, the place looks more like a place of storage than a restaurant. It is quiet with mini refrigerators displaying desserts and soda. Surprisingly, the owner does not serve shrimp. A bit of a surprise and I would quickly get them for lunch if they were prepared as well as the catfish. I would rate higher, and keep in mind the the prices are higher than you would expect but happy to pay again if she smoothes out some of the edges of her space and sides that accompany such wonderful catfish and chicken.

Me and my two children wanted to take an adventure to eat some good food. We originally drove to Auburn to try "happy crab", which we didn't know had been sold and was closed. We didn't want to drive all the way home (Puyallup) and decided to look at what was in the area. Serious soul popped up and was close so we decided to go there. I am so happy we did. I'm pretty sure happy crab would've been great, but serious soul was a great gem to find. We ordered chicken and waffles, chicken and greens, chicken and fries, catfish and greens and pecan pie as well as velvet cake and everything was absolutely phenomenal. This was cooked/baked by one person, she was a one-woman show and was so sweet! I can't wait to return even though I live quite awhile away, but it's worth the drive considering we don't have places like this anymore. The vibe definitely gives "Princess and the frog" where Princess Tiana is cooking up amazing dishes on her own, putting love into it all. You'll know what I mean when you meet her

Omg, I randomly stumbled across Serious Soul in Auburn and had no idea this place even existed. I stopped in because I was craving macaroni and cheese, and wow, it was so good. The chicken was cooked fresh, perfectly seasoned, and crispy. The mac and cheese was creamy and comforting, and the red velvet cake, which is not pictured, was absolutely delicious. Everything tasted like real soul food made with care. I will definitely be back.

Fried Catfish, steak fries and potato salad were delicious. The hot foods and made to order. Homemade Deserts were very good. Cakes and brownies.Customer service was great, friendly. Definitely will be back to support this small business. It's a small business wait times about 15 min but definitely worth it.

Sweet Owner, But Disappointing Meal I was greeted by the owner, who was such a sweet lady--very warm and welcoming, which I truly appreciated. I ordered one wing, one fish filet, and fries. I also picked up a grape soda in one of those old-school bottles, which was super cute and nostalgic. My coworker got the 5-piece wing dinner with mac and cheese. Unfortunately, the food just didn't hit the mark. The chicken had an off taste--possibly due to old grease or something sour--and neither of us could really finish our meals. For about $25 per plate, it felt overpriced considering the quality. Sadly, we both ended up tossing our lunches and chalking it up to a loss. I really wanted to love this spot, especially with such a kind owner, but I won't be returning.

The young lady at the counter was so sweet and amazing. Ambiance was like being with family and friends. This little charming spot really made my day. Though there is not a lot of room to sit it is well worth coming in and grabbing some down home cooking serviced with a smile and a lot of pride. Being from Houston you just want to feel a little piece of home. This place hit the spot not just with food but with love. Definitely adding to my place to stop when I'm in town.... Hard working people here to make your day comfortable and enjoyable. From chicken to fish this is the place to return to each and every time

Needed a place to stop for lunch and had never been in the area. It was the most amazing lunch! The fried okra was the best we've ever had and my grandpa loved the tastes of his childhood with sweet potato salad, delicious collars. Everything we had was devious right down the sweet potato pie. We sat in and while she cooked we chatted and it honestly felt like coming to a friend's house for lunch! Thank you so so much for such a wonderful lunch and wonderful memory.

Felt like some soul food and ran into Serious Soul. Walked in and there a couple tables so not a lot of room. I saw someone walk behind a the pop machines so maybe there's more seating there. I was greeted and the lady behind the counter was really nice. Asked about the menu and ended up buying 3 piece Fish dinner Mac N Cheese & Red Beans w/ Rice. Oh and some Peach Cobbler....I wasn't playing games. Fish was good...Creamy Mac not baked....Red Beans were ok....Cornbread was ok....Peach Cobbler was ok and I wish it was warm/hot instead of being in a refrigerator. While I was there it sounded like the people were ordering the chicken. Overall if you want some food swing by and check it out.

The three stars are because this place is definitely A-OK but for my husband and I it is a bit forgettable. If you're in the area and want quality food that is definitely good, sure, this is your place. The lady who served/cooked us was super nice too. There is no indoor seating, only outside or to go. Drinks selections are canned or glass bottle. Prices are kind of steep for the area tbh. Our whole meal was $60+ but again, you're patronizing a locally owned business so that's a plus. Food: my catfish was fine, unseasoned, and it's pretty much on par with other soul food places in Tacoma, such as Pacific Southern Kitchen. Fries were good but unseasoned. The fried chicken was definitely different in that the coating was super thin and unseasoned. See the trend here? The potato salad was nice, very mustardy but that's all I could get out of it. Corn bread was fine, kind of low-key, very forgettable. Honestly, I prefer the buttered biscuit's. Finally, the Mac n cheese was the star. The consistency and cheesiness was great...but??? You guessed it! Unseasoned. Overall, quality food, very under seasoned if not unseasoned at all, with a very nice lady working everything, but we have had better.

Collards, hush puppies, chicken and mac n cheese

I searched for "the best chicken wings" near me and this place did not disappoint. The owner is delightful and the food is delicious. I came for chicken wings and ended up ordering chicken, collards, mac n cheese and hush puppies with an order of coconut cake to go!

I am glad I found this little gem on my way back from camping. It's a small very casual clean place with two tables inside, but it's best for take away. I was greeted by the owner Diona who made all the food to order. Service was fast and friendly, and the food all looked amazing. I ordered the fried catfish with a side of hush puppies and my spouse got the oxtail. We also got a small side of fried okra. The catfish was perfectly cooked and just the right amount of salt, though I personally would have liked a touch more seasoning. It was still very delicious. The hush puppies were different than any I have had before. Kind of the texture somewhere between a traditional hush puppy and a donut or beignet. Very fluffy and moist and tasty. The okra was very good, big pieces that tasted fresh without too much breading, and well seasoned. Now, the oxtail is what stole the show! Juicy, tender, fall off the bone. The gravy was delicious and the mashed potatoes were buttery and perfect. You gotta go try it, but call ahead because it is not available every day. The downsides was the prices, which were pretty high, and the fact that they only sell canned drinks (I was really hoping to get some iced tea). But I would stop by again when I'm in the area.

Is this place ever open? I've driven by multiple times on multiple days and it's closed. The owner/workers never answer the phone. The hours posted on the dot are incorrect.

They are amazingly liberal with their hours. I'd suggest calling first.

Service was fast friendly and efficient. The truck is beautiful and the menu is very easy to read, with ample choices without it being too much to choose from. The four of us ordered the Philly sandwich with tots, kids 2 tenders and tots, a blue raspberry lemonade and the gumbo collard greens. Got out just under $63 with the tip included and it was very worth it. Portion sizes are great and food quality was even better. The Philly was dressed with tomato, lettuce, onion, cheese and a sauce. Tasted like a gyro and a cheesesteak had a baby with good hair! That meat was tender juicy and flavorful! Not only was the toasted bread nice and soft, but it held up with all the meat that was stuffed into it. It was exactly how it should be, more meat than stuff. The kids tenders were cooked to perfection. Simple, crispy and juicy. Tots on both meals were crispy and seasoned well. We chose fry sauce for the tots and it did not disappoint. Very close in taste to the burger sauce at in-n-out. The star of the show was the gumbo collard greens! Babyyyyy!!! When I tell you she know how to make some soul food, believe me. The flavors coming out of that bowl had me tussling with my kids for the last bite. I've never tried adding greens to my gumbo before, but I might have to from now on. This experience, from start to finish, was one I want to have again and again. I recommend trying whatever soul food item she's offering on the menu when you visit. Someone walking by as we were waiting, said to get the wings with the "oohwee" sauce. I'll try that next since I see myself going back again and again. 10/10 recommend.
