My husband James and I reached out to four different landscaping companies for a bid on a project to add gravel, place some rock along one side of our driveway, and fill a large bald spot on our lawn. While all the companies, including Southern Landscaping and Design, were nice and responsive, I feel the need to share our experience regarding their pricing. The quotes we received from the first three companies ranged between $9,000 and $11,000, which seemed reasonable for the scope of work. However, Southern Landscaping and Design came back with a quote of just over $28,000--nearly three times the amount of the other bids. I'm sure they do great work, but this level of pricing feels excessive and difficult to justify. I wanted to share this as a heads-up for anyone considering them. It's always worth getting multiple quotes to ensure you're paying a fair price. read more

Mixed bag experience with Southern Love to replace a concrete slab patio with a paver patio. I never got a design/sketch of final layout which I thought was odd but i do think having this would've avoided some issues. When the time was nearing for the start date, I had to prompt my contact about final layout/measurements since no one sent over their sketch of the plan. He came out to do final measurements and I discussed again what I wanted, most important leaving a square cutout for my rose that I planted when my grandfather died. No actual concept/image sent after but I figured the design wasn't that complicated so should be fine. Fast forward to first day of work and I found that the crew had torn out the rose. The foreman on site said no one told him about leaving it, just to build a patio against the house. Again, this is where a sketch or a plan on paper would've helped everyone be on the same page. I admit I spiraled about losing the rose. Southern Love, to their credit, did offer to replace but they were able to retrieve the rose from wherever they threw it and kept it hydrated for later replanting. I appreciated getting the rose back back it was planted in plain sand when I was told they'd plant in soil. This was a task for me later as I removed the sand to add topsoil, compost, and other organic matter. If it was clear they meant sand when they said soil, I would've told them to hold off and I'd plant myself. The main issue for me other than the above was how my yard was left after they finished. I expected to get my yard in the same or close to same condition as when they started. I knew the area near the patio site would see some traffic so I expected the grass seedlings there to suffer. But I was surprised that about 2/3 of my yard was left with granite/gravel that they spread around by the looks of it. I am in the process of replacing the warm grass with native grasses but right now just have ryegrass as a cover. While the yard wasn't lush with grass, it was starting to grow in. Saying this because I've never had a rocky yard as that would prevent effective mowing, which I did have over the summer until I killed off the grass. Now in addition to that gravel, I have rocks of all sizes throughout, even part of the yard that is far from the patio (I understand the soil has limestone but thought they'd dispose of what they dug up somewhere other than my yard). This has added to my yard tasks as I now need to collect and remove all the rocks and gravel prior to reseeding as rocks are a no-go when using a mower. I was also surprised to see a bunch of sand left behind as all the photos I saw of patios they've done for other clients looked clean and neat. I did ask about the sand left (it reminded me of the beach, it wasn't just a small amount) but was told it was needed for the patio. Again I think a discussion should've happened so I knew what to expect and to ask if I can have topsoil there instead of sand if it was needed at the edge for whatever reason. I have clay soil and mixing sand with clay is not a good idea. It also just doesn't look good (was there a neater/other alternative?). I didn't meet the owner as others have but wonder if he'd stopped by on the last day I could've had all this addressed. Maybe because my yard wasn't as nice as others it didn't get the same treatment/cleanup? Not sure but I am hesitant to use SLL again for my future projects. read more

We've hired Nikk twice to work on our backyard landscaping, and he has delivered above and beyond both times! The first time we hired him, his crew completely transformed our space with hardscaping and was so courteous and kind throughout the process. That was 3 years ago, and Nikk has sent them out since them to touch up some grout on the retaining wall as a courtesy. He really stands behind the work they do. Most recently, we had Southern Love replace our concrete patio and install turf. Nikk maintained communication throughout the process so we know when to expect the team each day and when they'd be done, and again, he maintains a high bar for his team's quality and showed this when he asked them to redo the finished patio because it didn't meet his standards. If you're reading this, it's highly likely you are looking at a large project. Southern Love recently completed a back yard overhaul for me. Included in the project was an irrigation redesign/installation, building a large Trex deck, creating a gravel/paving stone pathway with weed barrier and 1/4" retaining border, and sod installation. They remediated several smaller issues from a previous contractor, too! Nikk, Raul, and the whole crew were punctual, professional, thorough, and respectful. From the time we requested a consultation, their team was quick to respond and provide such a high quality of care and professionalism. I really liked their lead designer Harrison. He provided an estimate right within the same day. We have recently worked with Southern Love for a complete redo of our back yard. The overall work done was 1) Break the existing concrete patio, build a new bigger one and secure it to the foundation 2) Tiles on the concrete patio 3) Install turf 4) Install flag stone with decomposed granite in between 5) Mulch on the perimeter 6) String lights 7) Fire pit 8) French drain 9) Fixed my gate! SL was by far the most communicative and responsive business that I've dealt with during the request for quotes process. Nikk's responsiveness did not decrease a bit upon us shaking hands and starting the project. We've had back and forth on everything and I had to go back to the drawing board a few times and Nikk was helpful. I think our primary e-mail chain is about 70 emails long, and that ls primarily communication before the project start! Project was completed with absolutely no issues. SL team was flexible enough, and we made some edits as we went along. Everything got completed on time and with no major hick-ups. Crew on site was professional and diligent. There were always at least two workers on site, occasionally going up to 4 at turn points. Nikk himself also visited the site few times a week and we had discussions on aspects of the project. Nikk and his team at Southern Love helped make our backyard hoop dreams a reality, and provided a wonderful play space for our kids. The transformation that happened is truly unbelievable, and I want to take a minute to write an honest review of our experience with this Southern Love Landscape team. Nikk (owner) was our first point of contact. He came out to discuss our project and take measurements. Immediately we felt comfortable with his openness and landscape intelligence. He helped us to see the potential of a previously unused space and make a plan that we were happy to pursue. After we scheduled the work to be done, the Southern Love crew came to our house at 8am sharp every day on the project, which created a predictable routine for us. The crew leaders Raul and Eddy were super friendly and knowledgeable, and their workers were all very hard working. During the middle of our project, Austin was hit with the ice storm in Jan 2023. Luckily for us, since we already had the project going on, the crew came out as soon as the roads were drivable and helped us to clear a ton of trees and fallen branches. For this project, we wanted to: - Pour a concrete pad and install an in-ground basketball hoop - Make a walkway with pavers from the driveway through the side yard - Replace old brick pavers with turf - Build a new set of stairs up to our back guest house - Replace an old fence that separated the front yard from our neighbor's with a short retaining wall - Build a tall privacy fence that also acted as goal netting (for basketballs) - Build a separate decorative trellis fence for our play ground area - Install landscape lighting throughout - Build 2 other new retaining walls and add drainage where needed - Assemble a new tool shed, placed on a new concrete pad - Do some gardening and add about 18 plants to the side yard This long list of tasks was methodically knocked out one by one, and the crew ensured that the work was as near perfect as possible. The job site was cleaned at the end of each day. Raul and Eddy were especially receptive to my questions and feedback, which I had hundreds along the way (not an exaggeration). Their expertise in their trade was impressive, and we grew very fond of talking with them every day since they are genuinely nice guys. Nikk also checked in to the work site regularly and chatted with me to make sure I was satisfied with the work being done. He heard my concerns and addressed them with the crew immediately, whether it was a slightly misaligned fence picket or filling in the pathway with more material. The respect that the crew had for each other and for me as the homeowner was present the whole time (our project took just about 1 month to complete). We are blown away with the results, and extremely satisfied with the value that Nikk and the Southern Love Crew created for our family. We have already spent so much time in our backyard with the neighbors and kids (see some of our before/after pictures!). Nikk and the Southern Love team were fantastic. Our yard really needed some TLC. We'd never done a landscaping project like this before and he walked us through every step, from the intimidating planning stage, to plant selection at the nursery, to finishing touches and cleanup. There was no "hard sell," just solid advice and help keeping our costs down. Nikk came by to check on his team's progress every day. The estimate was very fair, but they also made a couple of adjustments as our needs evolved. Before we hired Southern Love, the large terraces (see photos) were just patches of dirt on a hillside. Old moldy limestone was replaced with fresh limestone. Weeds were removed and new, colorful flowering plants installed (Russian Sage, Texas Sage, sunshine ligustrum, lime sizzler, agave, red yucca). The team also did a great job replacing some rotting wood in our deck. We always felt like we were working with people who really knew what they were doing. Southern Love Landscaping is not only easy to work with but they are budget friendly and they do exceptional work! I cannot begin to tell you how happy I am with the work that Nikk and his crew at Southern Love Landscaping did at my rental house. They far exceeded my expectations! My tenants had neglected the landscaping and allowed some of it to die while other parts - like the tree beds and flower beds were overgrown and riddled with weeds and dead leaves - especially a once beautiful pea gravel pathway that went from the front walkway through the front garden of oak trees to the backyard gate. Nikk and his crew removed the dead plants and trees then trimmed and spruced up all the other plants on the property. They planted new trees, flowers and bushes; weeded the beds, put down weed barrier before mulching the beds. Everything looked great!! BUT when they reconstructed a pea gravel pathway that had been completely obliterated by dead leaves and weeds - I was blown away. It is now truly beautiful and the focal point of the front yard. They made the pathway more beautiful than what it was before! NIKK is friendly, professional, knowledgeable and easy to work with and he stayed well within my budget. We learned of Nikk and his team at Southern Love Landscaping from a client and engaged him for our project to install a paver driveway, some fences and gates and landscaping. Nikk was quick to respond and set up an appointment for a walk-through at our house.
