Just be careful. Their videos are great, and they are car dealers so...they use words that make you think the car is practically perfect. But when you call and ask direct questions you may not get the complete/honest truth. My example, I found a car '64 chevelle, asked if there were any visible signs of corrosion in the paint. He guaranteed me there were none. Paint was perfect as the car had been frame off restored and only driven 300 miles since. I asked again, since it was a northern car ... again I was assured car was clean. I said I wanted to hire an inspector since I am in Texas, buying the car unseen. To which he replied I need to leave a deposit for hold it for awhile. A non-refundable deposit. I was a bit surprised, but assumed the car would check out. As with any classic car, there are problems. And their were numerous issues with the car. Lots of bolt on type things, easily solved with tinkering. And hey... I actually like the challenge of replacing a broken window motor, or fixing broken switches, etc. No complaints there. It is what it is. BUT... that corrosion I was assured was not present was easily spotted in the inspection. And I have owned enough classics to know what this means and the $ required to correct. I called them to explain my concern and that I am not interested in a car that has corrosion and repaint in the near future. I did NOT use this to negotiate the price lower (not my style)...just that this is not the car for me. Asked politely about the deposit and potential refund as I felt the car had not been represented accurately. They responded that they held the car for me (their end of the deal) and would not give a refund. Whatever, it's their policy and I am not going to get bent out of shape over $500, or the $500 inspection fee that are lost. (By the way, Michigan Auto Inspection Services are great! Seriously use them...best inspection I have ever seen!) Advice: Get an inspection no matter what. And be leery of non-refundable deposits... Paid 500 bucks and got a glowing report " no rust " car arrived by truck, now I'm no expert but even I know when a car is a rust bucket. Hi, I'm looking for my dream car and stopped in here for a minute. I live in Pontiac (close by), right off the bat I seen a clean 62 and asked if I could take it for a test drive. I was given the run around. I seen a clean 66 SS, again I was given the run around. He said test drives are only for serious buyers and require a down payment of $500. I got a 800 credit score and if I'm getting a 40000 loan from a bank I don't possibly know how more serious I could be. (and he said "I'm drivin!") The cars seemed expensive (waaay expensive). I'd rather give an owner the loan money then whatevers going on at this place. I wanted to take it to a mechanic by my home (xxxxxx does phenomenal reputable service), and they look at used cars at absolutely no charge. Be very careful when purchasing a vehicle here. Although the owner David will say there is nothing wrong with the 72 Chevelle we were going to purchase. We already had the financing and insurance in line for this vehicle. I will say that on the outside, the car looked like it was in pristine condition. Then we realized when we test drove it, there was something wrong with the power steering (which the owner heard when he was pulling it out of the show room and wanted to blame it on low RPM's), there was clunking coming from the back end and it felt like the tires were going to fall off in the front. The passenger side wheel was rubbing so much it was smoking rubber during the test drive. When we brought it back for the shop to check it out, the owner didn't respond to our phone call (as a reminder, we already had the purchase agreement sent to the bank, insurance on the vehicle and financing ready to sign the bottom line), and then when we emailed a week later asking for a status update, he said he found nothing wrong with the vehicle! That is so concerning on a $40,000 car. We know it's old and it's not going to be perfect, but when you pay that kind of money, you would think those issues would be addressed and not ignored and David telling us there is nothing wrong with the car. My Husband asked during looking at the car and test driving the car why the car was hesitating when the salesman was punching the gas, but they implied that it was the horse power that scared us away? We didn't want to continue test driving it because we were that concerned it was going to break and we didn't want that to be on us. Very concerning and you might want to consider your options for more reputable places around. I just saw that southern motors had yelps. A few years ago I bought a truck from them. Later I found it did not have spacers in the back and blew 2 tires. The electrical wiring was off. BUYER BEWARE. You must see the car in person before purchasing. An even then be cautious. Watch out for adjectives they use, e.g. Georges, Beautiful, Slick, Excellent, Quality, Premium, and Great. These are all subjective words. After all, these people are USED CAR SALEMEN. They will point out only the most obvious flaws & problems. My car had many paint flaws that were never mentioned. They said they check the brakes. My car right off the delivery truck, pulled to the left dramatically or should I say scary. I had to replace the calipers & master cylinder. They said my car had had a ground up restoration. Not hardly! All the bushings were bad. I had to replace them. The radiator, an original had a hole in it. I replaced that. The radio yes, did power up but could not get any stations. The tape player did work. I could go on. Photos & videos are nice but they hide a lot of bad things. I will not buy online (sight unseen) again from these people or any others. I have heard stories about cars from Barrett Jackson & Mecum also. They all look great in photos, videos & on TV but may not be what you think they are. I have put another $21k in this car to make it right. Don't get me wrong, I like my car now (a year later) but getting to this point was expensive and painful. The only thing that was great was the shipped (The Finest Car Carrier). The vehicle arrived clearly with a BLOWN MOTOR!! After sending pictures of the vehicle oil stick showing it had a great ordeal of water in the oil as well as the radiator had no water because the motor was burning it all and I also sent a video of it running horribly being pulled off the transport truck burning white smoke and sounding like it is misfiring after running just a short few minutes the owner text me back and said "lose my number your a scam artists" yes folks that's how the owner of Southern Motors in Clarkston Michigan responds to people who purchase vehicles from them and they have an issue!! They always make themselves the victim when someone has a complaint about a vehicle they have purchased from them. What a gig, the 67 GTO bought from them should have been fixed before being sold the car was all over the road because the steering box was worn out, the carb. Leaked fuel onto the manifold. The transmission SLAMS into gear, the rear window leaks water as well as the entire trunk.In the video it shows one of their employees driving the car, you can't tell me he didn't notice the handling of the car! They have blocked me from making comments on their FB page lol.. No I did not talk to them on my cars issues because after reading all their bad reviews I figured it's definitely a waste of time. Be VERY thorough prior to purchase and read all the reviews and don't trust that they'll fix anything after money transferred and don't believe the stated condition of the vehicle. Purchased a 64 c10 last year. David recommended a vehicle inspection company but I didn't trust it after he rubbished the guy that I had chosen for the job. Saying that he was responsible for lost sales etc etc The inspection picked up lots of things you'd expect for the age of the vehicle, some poor workmanship and luckily no rust. David was meant to fix the speedo after saying that it was sent away to be fixed but the pickup arrived with speedo reading 60mph idling ! When you look at the YouTube video, when he says that it is amazing and no issues you can see the speedo pointing to 60 lol. Some of the issues...the ignition had a serious fault needing replacement as it was hot to touch and obviously dangerous, the steering column had a very dangerous connection to the intermediate shaft that was cut and not welded and there was no emergency brake/hand brake but David did sort this for me, but should have been on the vehicle. I wouldn't recommend as don't trust, they're resellers really with no comeback if issues with vehicle. Will spruik sell you an orange but when you cut it open...it could be a lemon. read more

RUN AWAY AS FAST AS YOU CAN!!! I had the same problems everyone else has listed. Purchased a 1972 Nova SS in February 2014. The car was advertised as a recent restoration that was "Ready to Cruise!" They should of said it was ready to be pulled to the junk yard. The car could not even pass NY state inspection. After paying top dollar for the car, here is a PARTIAL list of the issues I had to immediately address: Horn missing, broken leaf spring, worn brake lines, broken shock absorbers, no parking brake, U joint was incorrectly installed, gas gauge did not work, and two wheels had incorrect backspacing and had to be replaced. I finally had to have the motor overhauled, the transmission rebuilt and the rear end replaced. This was a typical scam restoration. As someone else said this was a "pig with lipstick." When I tried to address these issues, David Witt indicated I purchased the car "as is" and was not able to help. There are creditable dealers out in the market place that sell restored classic cars, Southern Motors is not one of them! read more

I bought a '64 Ford Galaxie with a 390 police interceptor and 4 speed trans. Leroy described the car as original. He thought the paint might be original but even if it was a museum piece that would be unlikely IMO. He sent requested photos and provided answers to all my questions. He was friendly and followed up without delay. In person inspection confirmed the car as pretty much original with a respray somewhere along the way. 34k miles seemed about right as I've had other classics and the telltale signs of a 134k mile car werent there. Motor was recently rebuilt and detailed. Ran well. Generally the car was as described. Buying a vehicle is always a buyer beware situation. There wouldnt be any 1 star reviews if people would just do their homework. It's ridiculous to blame the dealer for your failure! These are not new cars. If you want a warranty and zero problems go buy a new car. These are classics and hot rods. Expect some issues. Even a fully restored car needs some sorting. I regularly browse Southern Motors inventory and would buy from them again if the right car comes along. read more

I too purchased a car on the word and commitment of Dave Witt and was duped and lied to about the condition of the car. He continued to assure me that the car was in great condition and had nothing to worry about. I was forced to replace the gas tank, reran the fuel lines,and spent an addition $4,000 to put the car in a condition that I felt was safe enough to drive. Witt refused to help and was on the offensive and used the exact same line as the review above that this was a 40 year old car. Do not take their word check out the car or have a qualified mechanic check it out. I would not buy another car from these guys. There are many honest collector car dealers to buy from these guys are not one of them. Interesting you don't remember me as I have purchased two cars from you. You are everyone best friend when you are selling sub-par cars and forget them once you have their money. Would have expected no less from you. At least have the decency to tell people the truth about the cars they are buying and not represent junk as top notch cars. The most recent development regarding the 1971 Dart Swinger I purchased from Southern Motors in September 2015 is worthy of a follow-up. The car has accumulated less than 20 miles in the year and a half since my purchase, entirely due to ongoing, serious complications with it's mechanical reliability. Here, verbatim, is the report on the engine oil composition from Blackstone Laboratories: "We've got some not so great news for your Swinger. There's evidence of coolant in the oil, shown by potassium, silicon, and sodium. Sodium can also come from oil additive and silicon could be sealers/dirt, but potassium doesn't have many sources outside of coolant. We also found a high amount of copper, lead and tin, likely showing bearing wear." The oil analysis was done by an independent lab and lead to the following: I pulled the engine because of the potential bearing wear and coolant in the oil. Upon disassembly by a trusted engine shop it was discovered that one of the heads was cracked and unusable because it had already been poorly welded back together in the past. I saw this with my own eyes and it was bad. The crank and cam bearings were shot, which was consistent with the Blackstone lab report on the copper, lead and tin in the oil. We do not know for sure but the damage appears to be due to overheating. That part is a guess. The rest is just the facts. Another fact is that when I pulled the engine and removed the upper radiator hose, the thermostat housing did not contain a thermostat. This is more possible evidence of someone trying to cure a cooling problem but only making it worse. The bottom line on the engine is that it was internally damaged in the past and I cannot say who knew about the engine's condition. Suffice it to say that I paid top dollar to Southern Motors for a car that needed a complete engine rebuild, 4 wheel brake rebuild, and replacement of the entire electrical system. read more

I do not recommend Southern Motors to anyone because of my experience with them. I was looking for a 1965 GTO with a special feature, Tri-Power, and they had it. I walked in and I was greeted by Leroy who raved about their good reputation. He said they are all family there and I should come by to hang out with them as they are always there, just hanging out. He even invited me to come barbecue with them in the Summertime. So after such a warm welcome, I spotted a car that I was interested in. I asked Leroy if he can start the car, he said we cannot start these cars inside the showroom and he assured me it's in perfect shape. I bought that car, paying $40,000 +. Waiting for a good weather day I was ready to pick it up and called to ask them to have it ready. On the way home I discovered the Tri-Power wasn't working so the following day I called Leroy to tell him about it and other things as well, that I along with my mechanic found wrong. Now Leroy is acting like he doesn't know me anymore and told me I have to speak to a David. When I spoke to David he would not let me speak by speaking over me. Eventually, I did explain to him that there must be about 25 things wrong with the car and all I want is the Tri-Power to be fixed. He said they will look at it after I complained, but he did not mention a charge. After waiting a month and a half, I went to pick it up and he told me I owe them $300. and they would not release it until I paid and then gave me no bill. And the problem was still not repaired. I feel that all I got throughout the process of this purchase was nothing more than a hustle. With this being my experience, I will not do more business with them, and again I do not recommend them to anyone. I purchased a 1964 Impala SS from Southern Motors in June of this year, was a big mistake, the video is a great con, it drives and runs like a brand new 1964 Impala says David Witt what a lot of BS, the car is in the shop and so far I've go 8k into it. The carburetor needed replacing , had a cracked intake manifold, it has a 427 corvette engine it which the solid lifters were shut closed, had to be set up to proper clearances, the real axle bearings were shot, the seals were shot, the brake drums on the rear wheels were incorrect for the car, wrong brake linings, front rotors had the wrong size calipers on them, wrong size power booster, all brake lines were plugged or inoperable and the list go's on. No documentation to prove it was a real SS. Found this out after I put down a $500 deposit. Which I found out after I gave the deposit that it was 'Non Refundable' according to paperwork I never signed. Mr Witt was very rude and in my opinion is not worth doing business with. I purchased what was suppose to be a MINT 1932 3-window coupe, made a deposit based on the info given to me over the phone and a short video I viewed of the car. I drove to MI from TX to view the car but was not allowed to take it for a test drive as it was raining and they told me they did not want to remove it from the showroom under those conditions. the auto was shipped to me in Denton TX. I am now in the process of putting a few thousand dollars in repairs just to get it road worthy. Motor overheats, transmission leaks, brakes do not safely stop the car, hood assembly does not fit the car and was not on the (hot rod) coupe when I viewed it, radiator hoses leak, after market air conditioned does not work. I purchased a 1971 Chevelle SS from Southern Motors in Clarkston Michigan in February. I spoke with two people at this location prior to driving 3 1/2 Hours to view the automobile. I asked before driving what if anything I would need to do to the car, and was told that the air cleaner didn't support the cowl induction hood, and that was it. When visiting I noticed a few minor items on the car but felt it was something I wanted and I purchased the car. The problem was that I was not allowed to start the car and therefore I took the word of the owner that the car was tight. I do accept some of the responsibility here because I should have insisted on starting the vehicle. Once the car was in my possession there has been a long list of problems, and when I emailed Mr. Witt about these issues trying to come to some type of resolution he called me and was on the offensive from the get go. I tried to stay calm but his demeanor had me angry and the conversation became heated. The bottom line is make sure you start and drive the car because as he said to me "It's a 40 year old car and there is nothing he can do". I paid $21.000.00 for a 1967 rotisserie restored,original 327 engine nova from Sothern Motors and when the car arrived at my house this is what I got. The car was at least a poorly restored car that was restored about 10 years ago,a Wall Mart paint job that was faded and blistered,a 305 block dressed up to look like a "327"which leaked oil,had a hole in the radiator,was sheet metal repaired in the floor pans,had a cracked windshield,no heater,no blinkers or horn and a front suspension that needed a total replace. David twit oops,Witt told me it would pass Ma. Inspection fine and when I called him with these problems he was so good at back tracking and was so well versed at defending his sale of shit box cars it was as though he was reading from a script like a telemarkater. Would not refund my $$ and told me I signed an " as is" agreement etc.etc. I have spent close to $6,000.00 and now can drive a car that was"on my show room floor and never showed any oil leakage" as told to me by Dave,did I mention the tranny leaked and needed a rebuild? What I learned as a first time classic car buyer was to always have the car inspected by an outside inspection company that will give you an honest appraisal about the condition and value and that no money changes hands until you deem the seller worthy. below is what I sent the owner his response was that the car had none of these problems when it left. So basically it all happened in the truck he says that sometimes happens from his place to the buyer. So the covered up rust that was sprayed over everything underneath the car even the shocks were sprayed and yes they were shot and I had to by new ones, the door not opening and was broken on the passenger side. the part under the car to open the hood was so rusted that when my Mechanic tried to open the hood it broke off, the clutch is toast. the car pops out of gear. I could go on and on . He new I was in Calif and would not spend 900.00 for a round trip. He new I was building this to honor my dad who was a NHRA driver. Who does this ?? Now Leroy was a very nice man I have nothing against him. David new what was wrong with the car and he gave me a insulting response. I guess he thinks I am dumb. Well I guess I am. I have now spent over 3,000.00. since I got it 3 weeks ago. its been in the shop and is still there. If you buy a car there don't do it site unseen and get it checked out. Based on my experience with these guys, they bring no value to the table. They simply are middlemen that either do not know the vehicles they are selling or probably more accurately, intentionally misrepresent the facts. Before traveling to their location, I asked David W. a number of basic questions about the condition of the vehicle. He claimed body was rust free and very straight. Neither was true. After I purchased the vehicle, I started discovering that the car had been restored by hacks. I also asked if all the gauges worked, and that was not true either. Driver floor had a piece of scrap aluminum pop riveted in to some rusty, jagged hole about a foot in each direction. The more undercoating I've stripped off, the more problems I found. Roof had chunks of bondo as wide as your fingers stuffed into the seam where it meets the windshield. The mistake I made was listening to them and not doing a more in depth inspection. read more
