Headed to a play in Pelzer and thought to give this place a try for dinner beforehand. I would have to be starving for bbq AND in Pelzer driving past to stop again. Definitely wouldn't go out of my way. Now the bbq was ok, nothing fantastic, but tasty. The sides were run of the mill "semi-homemade". Their attitudes and menu is where the problems are. Trying a new-to-me bbq spot, I always get the sampler type plate. I want to try as many, if not all, the meats! It's always expensive and I don't care. This place does not have any type of sampler plate, meat combo, and will not create one!! We also wanted to try the wings, but they don't offer a wing appetizer. You can only get their wings in a basket unless you're orderIng 20. Their menu very rudely states "No changing of the menu! Don't ask!" I wanted to spend more money then they'd let me!! I'm not talking about adding menu items to the menu or food items to inventory. Everything I wanted was on the menu! It's a lazy amateur mistake to not leverage every food item you are already stocking and serving by designing a flexible menu. Our condescending early 20 something (maybe) server acted like we were inconveniencing him by being there. They should actually train their waitstaff, but again, don't seem to have enough restaurant experience. If the "oh my gosh, a new restaurant in Pelzer" local volume can keep them open until football season, they should make it at least a year. Another customer friendly bbq joint with halfway decent food opens nearby, they're doomed unless they course correct. read more

We get take out from here on occasion. It's ok. It just seems that the flavor gets less and less every time we visit. The meats hardly taste like they've been smoked and the fries have no seasoning whatsoever. The baked beans are disgusting. read more

The waitress was very nice. My husband got a half rack of ribs and I got the pulled pork sandwich. Both were excellent. My husband got rice and hash. It was not what he expected. Rice was watery and hash was just waterery looking pulled pork. The mac and cheese was ok. I ordered an appetizer side of fried green tomatoes. They were served with ranch dressing. Brisket was average by comparison to my years in KC and NC. Nice facility which may be why prices are a bit high by comparison with BBQ around our place in North Carolina. Regardless, I'm impressed by the business acumen behind this establishment. A bit more southern hospitality at the drive through might be worth considering though. read more

The food is decent but they are way over-priced and their portions don't match their existing prices. Their seasoning is not for everyone-and it's not been consistent over my 3 visits. The sides are common BBQ joint sides and nothing unique. Staff is a hit or miss, the girls are either real sweet or young girls that feel entitled to be rude. Rudeness doesn't set well with me when I'm paying for food and customer service. Speaking of paying, I have seen the worst case of "nickel and dime"...they charge you 75 cents to run your bank card....even as debit- SERIOUSLY? Very disappointing. I ordered, to take out, a pork BBQ sandwich and Cole slaw. I was busy looking at the restaurant decor. I gave my card for payment. Staff, one person, was very polite. I took my meal, two items, home to eat. The BBQ was just okay, and the Cole slaw was absolutely flavorless. To top it off, when I looked at the banking transaction a week later, I saw they charged me $17.02. What?? I don't have my receipt, so I'm SOL, but I will never go there again! read more

We never expected our shortcut through Pelzer to produce a BBQ restaurant to write home about! This spacious new place provided the boost these weary travelers needed to make it to our destination. Although $8.95 for a bbq sandwich and side might seem steep to some, it was a heaping portion and cooked just right. I appreciated the assortment of sauces too - mustard-based for us SC girls and catsup-based for the rest. The side of baked beans was ample enough and spicy, just like I like them. This a wonderful place to enjoy some great flavorful bbq. I had the sandwich with potato salad. I liked the sweet bbq sauce too. My husband had the bbq plate with Brunswick stew & hash & rice. UPDATE 5/3/18 and 5/11/18: Every restaurant has a "bad day; and on May 3rd, Southern Smoke had one. The rib sandwich has so many bone fragments due to careless cutting, it's a wonder I didn't chip a tooth. To top it off, after I opened my beer in what I thought was a BYOB joint, the owner came running out telling me it's not legal, as even though they did not sell it to me, they don't have (at least) a beer & wine license. At least the owner didn't charge me for the meal. THAT BEING SAID! On my return trip on May 11th, I decided to give them a second chance; and everything was quite fine. read more

This is excellent bobbycue. There is not much excellent to eat in Pelzer. This place is clean, they know how to pit cook pork. Service is friendly, prompt, knowledgeable, engaging, attentive and courteous. They keep an eye out for you here. The hash is genuine, old school meaty with no filler. Beans were jazzed up premium pork n beans. Bun was yeasty and bakery fresh. Pork was beautifully smoked, lean with flavor that packed a punch. It rose that bun y'all in the saddle about a half a pound worth. It wasn't cheap, but it was well worth it for being so generously served. They are only open weekends. Location is about two miles off I-85 on the northern side of the road, in tight, smack dab on it. They serve Coke products, and kick em up a notch too. The ribs seem to be the Rick star of thus joint. I wasn't that hungry or could know more. But I did see a rack walk by and they looked Tammy Faye praise worthy. We'll be back! read more

I love this place!! I order primarily from the drive thru. The woman at the drive thru is awesome. So nice and pleasant to talk to. The ribs are awesome. I love chicken wings and didn't think this place was going to make a proper wing. I was wrong. The only knock on the wings is the sauce. They don't have a real "hot" wing. The wood used in building this restaurant interior REEKS. It is an overpowering, unpleasant smell of wood that was not properly cured prior to construction. We ordered chopped pork sandwiches, rib sandwich, Brunswick, and fries. The fries were OK, but the rest was lacking. The regular sauce seems loaded with corn syrup. The mustard and spicy sweet were meh. The Brunswick had a LOT of green bell peppers, overpowering the flavor. The stew was watery, and lacking in flavor. The buns were cheap, weak, pulled out of a bag, and a small portion of meat added. (Considering the price) The rib meat was overly smoked, and lacking in flavor. I have never had a rib sandwich where the bones had been removed prior. MAYBE 3oz of meat per sandwich. The waitress never came back to our table after getting our orders. Saved us money. THE FINAL INSULT: THEY TRIED TO CHARGE US A FEE TO USE A CREDIT CARD ON A $24 LUNCH. Bottom line, high prices, meh food, poor service, outrageous fees. We will make sure to NEVER RETURN. read more

To me its the absolute best BBQ around period!!! The BBQ is so good it really does not need any bbq sauce. But if you do decided to put sauce then I highly recommend their homemade sweet & spicy sauce. The hash and rice is out of this world best!!! The meat is amazing and deserves 5 stars! The sides, while not entirely atypical for a southern style restaurant, are all a carb and sugar laden sad line up. The sweet potato fries are good. The fried okra, which I have to peel the breading off to meet my dietary needs, is ok. The sweet potato crunch is candy. Good if you can eat that. Cole slaw, as reported by one in our party, was tasteless. The rolls served with all the meals are the saddest thing ever. Cold stale hamburger buns! They had good unsweet tea with fresh lemons, a plus! But: No green salad, no green unfried veggies. If you served candied sweet potatoes and fried ones, why not just offer some plain baked sweet potatoes? How about tossed salad that you buy in a big bag? SC has many diabetics and those that don't eat all carb sides. The wings were fried NOT SMOKED which was disappointing. And you don't have a choice of sides with them. Eat the plain fries or pay extra! What the heck? Why? The service was friendly, tea was refilled. The atmosphere is pleasant and the meats are totally worth going! Despite the sad sides lineup! No sauce needed is true. The smoked meat was succulent and delicious. Fix your sides line up and I'll up the stars! Don't lose customers over such a silly thing.
