For $10, no one will leave Charli's Bar-B-Que hungry. I ordered the bbq plate. It came with an over generous portion of pork, a bun, chips and two sides. I chose the Mac and cheese (looked and tasted suspiciously like Kraft Mac & Cheese) and cole slaw. The cole slaw was non-descript - I've had better - but it was not bad either. The star of the plate was absolutely the bbq pork which had a light smoky flavor and a tangy bbq sauce. I ordered the sauce extra-hot - on a scale of 1-10 of heat I'd give it a 7. The deliciousness of the bbq pork more than made up for the mediocrity of the sides. Plus for $10 (no tax, but net of tip) the meal is a great value. Plenty of tables and space - I didn't feel crowded in at all. read more

I've been coming to Charlie's for years, and even though I live in another state now, I make it a point to visit Charlie's on every trip back to Greenville. That should tell you everything you need to know, but maybe not, so let's go. This is BBQ done very well -- Very Well. You march right up to the counter, and your order is prepared right before your happy eyes. Pay there, grab a cup for your tea, and take your plate to one of their tables. I used to order a Mild Chopped Plate with Cole Slaw and Baked Beans, with a side of Fries and a Tea. Those days may be gone forever (since I've learned that I'm gluten intolerant, and also have a severe intolerance for tomatoes- ech!), but I can still love on some chopped BBQ with slaw and the ever-beloved iced tea. Food was sub par at best . Best thing they had was the French fries. Plus the have a sign stating that it's the law to wear a mask. This is false there is no law stating that. Had lunch here this past Monday after flying in for a quick one day job in Greenville. While It wasnt bad- but when BBQ has so much potential- this was disappointing. I had smoked turkey & pulled pork. The turkey wasn't bad but I've certainly done better birds on my WSM. While not dried - it wasn't overly moist either. Flavor was decent. The pulled pork wasnt bad but certainly not some of the better pork I've had in recent memory. They probably would have earned 3 stars but they lost points: - Mac & Cheese: this was like box mix stuff. - Cornbread (lack thereof). What kind of BBQ place doesn't have cornbread? - Coffee: They offered coffee and said that they would brew a fresh pot, but this was very, very weak brew. I'd pass on Charlies BBQ. I should add that the next day I had BBQ at the Airport during a layover and this was far better. I guess I'll have to do a review for that place. read more

It has been many years since I've eaten at Charlie's. I travel through Greenville, SC a lot but don't have much business in Greenville any more. Well I was on my way home, going to arrive too late for dinner there and remembered Charlie's so I thought I'd check it out again. I arrived just before closing, they were nice enough to serve me and I worked to get out of there before they were ready to leave. This was a different location than when I last ate here. Basically across the street I believe from their old location? So many years since I was last here. This was and probably still is some of the best BBQ in the immediate Greenville area. Their pork was every bit as good as I remembered it; no disappointments, and it was moist even though I was served the serving of the day. I just wish they offered a good Vinegar sauce as that would really compliment their work in smoking the pork. The beans were good but nothing to really get excited about. The potato salad on the other hand, it was awesome. Some of the best I've had. I will certainly try to get back here again in the near future not the distant future. read more

Just flew in from airport. Rental driver recommended so we gave it a try. Great service, great BBQ. Friendly staff. Got the jumbo sandwich with beans and potato salad. Potato salad was like a loaded bake potato, my husband loved it. I am a bit of a potato salad snob (only eat my moms recipe) but it looked interesting. I had the beans and they were good. All of it was good. I regretted not getting the French fries as they looked amazing. The French fries were those large crinkle fries. I had a hankerin' for some fools old fashioned BBQ, so I stopped in to Charlie's. It's a pretty big place with tables scattered throughout for seating. One steps up to the counter where the guy is chopping BBQ, order your food, and he slings the pig on the plate in front of you. Add two sides with the plate and you have your food in about 30 seconds. I got the half pound plate with two sides and chips and bread for $9. Not a bad deal. The pork was very flavorful. It was finely chopped which I like. The hot BBQ sauce was tasty, but I added some Texas Pete for a little extra kick. The sides were very average. Mac and cheese didn't look like it was homemade, and the beans tasted like a can of Bush's beans. Not sure if either are true, but the sides were indeed unremarkable. Good BBQ for sure. read more

Had the BBQ plate lunch and they served it up right at the counter as I paid, no waiting! Comes with 2 sides, I decided on the slaw and French fries which to my delight were crinkle fries, with sweet tea and including tax my total was $8.25, ppl seem to complain a lot down here about that price being "expensive" for lunch but come on guys, you get what you pay for, I'm from a larger city and this is a smokin deal (pun intended). Food is decent, bbq being a bit dry, however staff is rude and unprofessional and has messed up my order on multiple occasions.

I paid $7 for good barbecue (combination plate which means chicken and pork). I would say this is more of a good lunch spot than a take someone out for BBQ spot. Their selection is limited and the mac and cheese was the only side I liked which was very basic. This place shined in the BBQ (well duh). The chicken and pork was moist and loaded with flavor. The BBQ sauce came in two options hot and mild. I would like to see a few more options but who knows, maybe that's why this place is such a bargain. read more

Dinner Jan 23 So a buddy of mine Jim grew up on Charlie's. And I am talking like eating at the original one in the early 60's. He tells me the menu and recipes are virtually unchanged from those days. So right off the bat I like the heritage and simplicity! The pork is shoulder...ie " you're eating high on the hog". Loved the 2 sauces. Loved so much I couldn't decide which one I liked better as both had tastes that seemed to evolve and flavor differently with each bite. My parents live right down the road from this place, and I was in town visiting them, so I decided to give them a try. I got a large BBQ sandwich with their hot sauce and side of mac and cheese and cole slaw. The sandwich was awesome, really tasty, and the sauce is just a tiny bit spicy, and goes well with a sandwich. The mac and cheese is standard stouffers style which is OK but nothing special. The cole slaw is a little different than I'm used to, a bit brighter of a flavor and not as sweet; it goes well with the sandwich though and I liked it. I wish there was one of these down the street from where I live in california, I'd be there all the time. read more

I just moved here from Kansas City and this place gets my stamp of approval! I got fries, beans, pork, chips, bread, and a drink for $8.50. Hard to beat. Sides were great, BBQ was good, and I love this sauce. Also It was ready before I could even finish paying. This is a hole in the wall with no frills, which is my favorite kind of place. This is a good stop...with the right expectations going in. If you're looking for a place with ambiance, original personality, and absolute authentic bbq...keep looking. If your looking for a basic decent meal, served quick, at a very reasonable price...this might be your stop. Choices are limited, so service is fast. I enjoyed my meal as did the three others in my party. I would have rated 4 stars, if not for a couple of small details. Those being: the "hot" bbq is not hot by any standard, good sure, but not hot. The second is that the Bbq sauce and ketchup are in the same squeeze bottle; so I ended up covering my fries in the bbq. Not terrible; but sometimes the little things make the difference. Been coming here for years and have enjoyed their BBQ. But today I had lunch there and the pork tasted a tad old.....almost that taste you get when you microwave left over meat. The sides were good as usual. Got slaw and baked beans. Also for what it's worth the chips they put on top of the BBQ plate were stale. Hopefully this was just an off day because I've always enjoyed their food. If it had been my first time here I probably would not have gone back. read more
