We've been regulars at this place for a few years now, and we've never been disappointed. The marinated chicken and beef are absolutely delicious, and they always have the freshest and most delicious beef jerky from Buccees (same source). The mac and cheese is the best I've ever had, and the beef bacon is fantastic. The twice-baked potatoes are also delicious. I'm a big fan of the ribeyes and ground beef. We have visited the Clearwater location a number of times but this was our 1st to Sarasota. We bought both Steakhouse and Argentine tips. Both were excellent but we loved the steakhouse ones. Both were very tender after grilling. Steak tips are not easy to find here in FL. This New England guy approves! Also bought a few pieces of original jerky. It was equally as good. I bought two beef tenderloin filets and paid approximately $60 for them over a year ago. ( I was born in Kansas City and raised on the best beef money can buy ). A nice experience I didn't have much need for a butcher shop on my visit today, but I did have a need, or at least a desire, for a sandwich. I discovered SSB is a fairly large place with meats and several types of marinated meats on display. They also offer deli sides and grocery items. According to their website they have a large selection of craft beers and international wines. Nice. I ordered one of their most popular panini sandwiches, Argentine Cheese Steak. It was very good, the meat tender and the melted white American cheese great. On the one hand I thought the sandwich was a bit expensive at $12.99, but on the other hand this is a butcher shop, so the quality of the meat should be better than you would find elsewhere. My Thanksgiving dinner was perfect, in part due to the delicious and moist fresh turkey I purchased from Southern Steer Butcher. I have never seen a more perfect turkey. With only one basting, the fantastic bird was cooked to perfection in 3 hours at 350 degrees. I used the recipe that called for flavored butter under the skin and the cavity stuffed only with veggies: onions, celery, garlic, and herbs. Thank you Southern Steer for helping to make this Thanksgiving holiday a hit! It was the first time I visited this butcher and I was greeted by friendly people behind the counter and given an overview of how they do their marinades. I will certainly visit this shop again. I would have to say this is one of the better butchers in town. I was not happy with some ribs I received and after the butcher or owner explained it to me, he still replaced them with ones that I found to my liking. You do not find this level of customer service very often these days. We have also bought a brisket, ribeyes, tri-tip(oh my it is the best cut with the fat layer still on it and as big as my head), roasters, sausage, a little of everything you could say. My husband and I have been wanting to stop in to Southern Steer Butcher and try a few things out. We were not impressed. First, things are way too expensive. Once the meat has been "marinated" it weighs more. So you can figure they are certainly getting a premium price for their marinated meats, which is so easy to do at home. We tried the chicken breast, chicken thighs, and two types of steak. The chicken breast texture was very offputting, so much so we only had a few bites of it. Chicken thighs better. Two types of steak (Including the top seller Argentina tips at $14.99 a pound) were overpowering and not tender. I agree with Steve S. about the display. It is not appealing. I was very shocked at all these reviews that were giving 5 stars. Maybe people don't know good food or a good value. Or maybe too many "friends" are writing in. I don't think people mind paying this for GOOD quality, but it wasn't at Southern Steer. People have many good choices for meat in Sarasota and after the newness wears off, they will probably be going there. read more
