The butcher's block is my place to go when I want the best fresh meat around and they have a frozen compartment with meats I do not find anywhere else. For a party of 28 last Sunday I ordered a Porchetta and a beef tenderloin. I followed the direction I was given for the cooking, It was just plain awesome, both very tender meat, perfectly cooked. The owner suggested a Cabernet from Far Niente and because I love Ferante from years ago, I bought a bottle. This place is awesome! I by far am no chef/cook and I went in there having no clue what I needed, just a recipe. Their staff was so kind and helpful and took the time to explain to me what to do and what type of wine to go with my meal. The cut of meat they provided was excellent-my meal turned out fantastic thanks to their help! They cut the meat perfectly so I had the best piece for my Beef Wellington. Just attended the wine event at butcher block. The owner came outside, ripped our glasses (that we ASKED if we could take out front and that HIS establishment gave us) and threw them on the ground and yelled at us- 4 times. The owner not only yelled at us but aggressively took glasses (that are usually included in the ticket price) in our hands and threw them in the lot then said "yes I am an asshole." DO NOT RECOMMEND. Though everything inside looks enticing the owner himself is a horrible person and sadly drives everything down. PS he was incredibly nice earlier but was pouring drinks and then drove off erratically. read more

I've been looking to buy chicken necks to use as bait for blue crabbing. I called the Butcher Block and was advised they carry them frozen! I immediately headed over to find a surprisingly stocked store with not only quality meats but also an excellent selection of wines cheeses and seafood. They carry back-fin and claw crab meat that was very reasonably priced in addition to a wide selection of charcuterie items, including foie gras! I highly recommend The Butcher Block! read more

Attended a wine event there tonight. I have never felt more scared or uncomfortable in my life. We enjoyed a wonderful wine event, as we were leaving the owner, Scott, came out yelling at our about wine glasses, that we were informed we could bring out, and Scott literally tore them out of our hands and threw the wine on the ground, almost hitting us in with the wine. He then proceeded to tell us that we were stealing from him. He then proceeded to yell at us, including curse words. I will NEVER return there. He does a forks and corks event every year. So many delicious options here, for both vegetarians and carnivores. I often buy whatever salmon preparation they are offering, always good. They make their salads and sides in house, again always fresh and delicious. They also sell fresh marinara sauce and fresh pasta. They always have a small assortment of fresh vegetables to round out your meal. You can pick up a bottle of wine while you're there. It's one stop shopping for your dinner, but no lines. My friends and I attended the Wine, Women & Shoes wine tasting last evening, benefiting Forty Carrots. It was a great event, 5:30-7:30. At 7:30 we paid for a fair amount of food and wine, all on one bill to make it easier for the staff and stepped outside to wait for our Uber. At many wine tastings you receive the glass as a "souvenir" - and since two of us had a small amount of wine left, my friend asked if we could step outside with it, as it was clear they were trying to close. Once we were on the sidewalk directly in front of the doors (so fewer than five feet from the door), the owner came out and aggressively yanked the glasses out of our hands (mine was literally at my face), accusing us of steeling and calling us names. He never calmly said a word to us as we definitely would have apologized and walked our two glasses inside. The owner's behavior was aggressive, rude, unnecessary and frightening - all toward four women, and witnessed by a few others. I'm simply shocked - and will never again go to Butchers Block. read more

DAMNN.... This was some bomb steak. Pretty well organized meat market with helpful staff who led me in the direction of the Korean steak tips which were delicious! They had plenty of flavor options and can't wait to try some of the other seasoned steak. I will say the prices are $18.99 a pound which is a bit much but SO worth it every once in a while! This is a real Sarasota institution. They've been here longer than I have! The big thing here is the customer service and the great selection of wines. Get on their mailing list as they have wine tastings during the year and it is a great chance to meet winemakers and sample some amazing products. While you are looking over the wine, be sure to try out the great meats. I've also enjoyed their lasagna and other prepared foods. Sausages are great. When in this part of Sarasota, stop in and try things out. The parking lot is a little small and cramp so watch out for that. read more

All meats are rated as prime or better which means a lot for food quality. Most groceries offer choice at best. I wanted one of each from the offerings. The wine selection is extensive (you don't need to spend a fortune for a very good wine) so be adventurous. The choices from the inner aisles are great for finding jams, preserves, grains and pastas to team with your choice of protein. You aren't paying for restaurant prices so splurge a bit and have fun cooking a great meal. read more

If you are a veteran STAY AWAY! This past Friday I attended a meeting on University Avenue for some preliminary planning of the Memorial Day tribute we put on each year at Patriot Plaza. On my way home I saw the Butcher Block sign as I made a left. I was tired and hungry so I decided to stop in. I saw some bottles of wine on a table up front that said 1/2 price. The label on the wine had a brand name with just two large capital letters in black "AM". I bought one bottle. On my way home, as I lived twenty minutes from the store, I was thinking how on Veterans Day I could honor some of the veterans that will not be around much longer due to age and infirmities. I decided that if that wine was any good I would doctor the wine label up by adding an "M" & "Y" so it said "ARMY". I would cook up some chili and cornbread and head out in search of combat wounded Army veterans in the Sarasota area in the various facilities. I would just sit and let them talk about whatever they wanted to talk about and honor them. I myself am a combat wounded veteran and also a former platoon sergeant as well as a drill sergeant. I have men that I commanded in battle buried in Arlington Cemetery where I will eventually be interred. Yesterday I went back to the store to purchase the remaining bottles and see if I could get a discount of maybe twenty percent. I was trying to keep the cost down so when these humble men I was going to visit would refuse the gift I could say hey, the cornbread, chili and wine cost less than $10. I went there at 3:30 in the afternoon and the store was deserted except for one person talking to someone in front of the counter. Turns out one of the two was the owner whom I asked for. The other person then left leaving myself and the owner as the only two people in the store. There were nine bottles left on the table. I then told the told briefly in an opening sentence that I was going to visit veterans and lifted up my hand to show him the official case of my Purple Heart, emblazoned on the top in gold letters "United States of America". I told him what was in the case and was going to open it and show it to him. It has my name on the back of the medal. I brought my license in too to prove who I was and to show that I was not trying to scam anyone. He glanced down and then looked up at me quickly with a "so what look" and what do you want look. He had no interest in looking at and holding the most sacred of decorations in the military which can only be awarded by being killed or wounded in battle. It is the only award that does not have to be recommended by an officer. He had no interest in what I wanted to do, none. As he was impatient and I only stated partially in one sentence summarizing what I wanted to do and saw he was getting more impatient and wanted me, I guess, to ask him questions concerning the products in his store. I then asked if he could give me a discount on the remaining nine "AM" bottles. Immediately he said no they are at half price now! There were no customers in the store except me! Not a one! He could not care less about even listening to me. The whole interaction took less than thirty seconds. I turned away from him and walked away and said "Have a nice Veteran's Day". He said to me as I got to the front door, not moving an inch from where he was standing, "You are going there?", which confirmed he was not deaf when I attempted to tell him what I wanted to do. I sat in my car for twenty or so seconds right in front of the door to see if he would think about how he behaved. I had backed my SUV right up to the front door with my Purple Heart plates on it as more proof that it I was not scamming. I left and went on home. I was going to write something up as appreciation for their probably $20 discount on a $100 order. Instead, I am writing this. If you are a veteran STAY AWAY! You have other choices besides this establishment that care about the sacrifices people have made including the ultimate sacrifice! read more

The best butcher ever, my wife and I were welcomed as soon as we arrived and was asked if we needed any help, at that time we stated that we were just looking. As we looked around we saw that it was some of the best meats and supplies that we if ever seen in one store. Scott helped us with any questions and was very knowledgeable in all aspects of the store, plus he was very friendly and we felt as we were talking to people that we had known for years. It was the 4th of July, so we picked out some wine, aged Cowboy steaks, Hamburger, and Amish bacon. When we got home we tasted the hamburger, and the bacon, and it was the best we have ever tasted. We cooked to steaks for dinner, and feel that we would have had to go to a 5 star restaurant to get such a quality steaks. All and all, we have found our butcher and don't need to go anywhere else. I was driving down 17 street and saw smoke coming from the Butcher Block building. I thought the place was on fire. Had to pull in and saw someone cooking hamburgers on a Big Green Egg. Turned out to be Scott, the owner promoting his products. Guess they do it every Tues for lunch. Had to have a burger. Smelled awesome. It was so good that the Next day my wife and I went down there and bought a Big Green Egg with lots of add ons. My only regret is not buying one sooner. This grill is amazing. Guaranteed for life. Scott and company shine in this family owned business. Meats are over the top and most of it is prime cuts. Great wine selection and staff has some sincere recommendations. First thing I wanted to do after we moved from Michigan to this area was to find a meat market. I do not like to buy grocery store prepackaged meat. My first trip here I met Scott. The meat from fresh ground chuck to rib steaks to pork chop and bacon is fantastic. The next time back Scott remembered me and created a place I love to come back to.
