Outdoor dining, basil pesto chicken and BLT (lighting off due to red canopy overhead).

This place has come full circle over the years, and is currently a very legitimate food option on the East side and near lake Monroe. The basil pesto chicken, and BLT were exceptional. Service was great too. Nice outdoor space in the bar side. Highly recommend.

We were surprised that this hole in the wall would serve really good food. Don't let the establishment's outer appearance scare you away. The hamburger was hand patted. The BLT was made from fresh ingredients, the bacon was still hot when I was served my sandwich. The server was also the cook that afternoon. He was friendly! I would put this establishment on my "might stop again " list.

    Burrito special. Muy bueno

We loved the atmosphere though - the building is kind of interesting and the decoration was very classy. Maybe the main area was a little loud, but we ended up seated in a semi-private room with one other table, so we had relative quiet. It was dim but not in a bad way. All of the staff was very friendly. Our waiter was attentive and enthusiastic but didn't come across as trying to upsell us. Drinks were excellent. I usually just go for beer, but the cocktail menu looked really interesting, so I got a cocktail was very glad I did. I got the rye-based "boss fight", which was very strong with unique, complex flavours. I also had many sips of my dad's earl grey cocktail - also very interesting and delicious - and my mom's "problem child" with non-alcoholic gin. They have a really nice non-alcoholic drink menu with different NA spirits too. Food was equally excellent. We got the muhammara appetizer, I had the butternut agnolotti for my entreee, and we shared a chocolate and a vanilla-cranberry bread pudding for dessert. My dad said the muhammara was one of the best dips he's ever had. The middle eastern flavour was a little different from stuff you usually get at American restaurants, and it was presented very nicely with different garnishes. The blue cheese cream sauce on the agnolotti was also a little different and really complimented the flavour of the squash. The bread pudding may have been the best bread pudding I've had in a restaurant - it was very moist but wasn't too sweet or too rich. The chocolate cake was kind of like an oreo cake with the thick vanilla frosting and cookie crumbs - not your generic chocolate cake with white frosting, but conventional enough that I think it would make anyone happy. Maybe the portions of the entrees alone are a little small, but I think they were the right size to enjoy along with a shared appetizer and dessert. Considering that, the prices are okay for upscale dining.

When I order a $20+ hamburger I just expect more. But it's a beautiful location and the service is fine. If you like a few cocktails with your meal and are interested in the atmosphere likely as much as the food, it's probably a great option. I ordered the bacon cheeseburger with fries and a coke. The coke was a bottle (if you follow me you know my thoughts on this) and my cheeseburger was cooked perfectly, though the amount of bacon was minimal at best. The fries were amazing. My wife ordered the chef's chicken special (sorry I'm not sure what it was called exactly) and she liked it but didn't love it. Our server was very nice but it did take a bit to get initial service and the pace of the meal seemed slow given it wasn't very crowded when we were there. All in all, it was a fine meal but not my favorite in town. If I want a burger there are better options at more reasonable price points.

I think it compares well…read moreto college bars you see in movies where it's cheap and a little gross but there's a lot of history and reputation behind the name so people still go. On the weekends and during the school year the place is filled shoulder to shoulder and the patio is a super fun time where you can meet tons of people. $2 Tuesdays and other cheap drink deals are nice but are fairly common throughout Bloomington with other bars like Upstairs or Brothers. I haven't tried the food but the service I've had has been great so far, bartenders have nice personalities. One important red flag is that the servers will add in their own tips or double charge cards because most people are overserved and are too drunk to notice. My card was charged twice for two completely different amounts when I was absolutely sure I only purchased one drink and used my card one time. My friend's card was charged $20+ more than what his bill was and the process of disputing these charges is a major hassle so I can see how they get away with it so often. Kilroy's and Sports both have serious issues with overcharging/double charging cards so check your bank account after you leave!

We arrive early around 5pm to get an early table to handle our group. Service was good as was the food as we celebrated our son's achievement. Without notice we were advised that our table had been "reserved/purchased" and though we had open tabs and consuming actively, they insisted that we find another space in the now packed restaurant. It was now raining and relocating to another packed restaurant with an 84 year old grandmother was not an option. I am disgusted with the treatment provided to 3 IU grads, a former little 500 champion, and a large # of guests. It left a stain on an otherwise spectacular weekend. The Tattersfield's Will not be returning to this establishment anytime soon.

Upon arriving, we showed our IDs to the first bouncer, who directed us to a second bouncer for an additional ID check before entering the pub. The second bouncer reviewed my ID and approved me without issue. For context, I am a current graduate student at IU, born in 1997. He then examined my friend's ID. She was born in 1998, yet he told her that her ID was fake and attempted to confiscate it. My friend firmly insisted that the ID was legitimate and asked what she could do to verify her identity. The bouncer claimed that the ID did not look like her and stated that she could prove it by using Face ID on her phone -- a request that made no sense, as Face ID can be used by anyone with access to a phone and is not a valid form of identification. While this interaction was taking place, white women were continuously passing us in line without being subjected to the same scrutiny or additional ID checks. The bouncer did not stop or question them at all. It is important to note that in my friend's ID photo, she was wearing a blonde wig and eyelash extensions, which she was not wearing that night. Despite these differences, it was still very clear that the ID belonged to her. Eventually, the bouncer stated that he was done speaking with us and suggested that we take the issue up with management. Once inside the pub, the first employee we spoke to was dismissive. He waved his hand at us as if to shut down the conversation and said, "You're here, you can just stay." We explained that the issue was not about being allowed inside -- it was about being racially profiled and feeling unsafe and unwelcome spending money at the establishment. As we attempted to explain this, a man standing next to the employee aggressively turned toward me and shouted, "WHAT," in a threatening manner. As a woman, I felt unsafe and intimidated. Engaging in a confrontation with a visibly intoxicated man who could physically harm me was not an option. Another employee, Connor, eventually stepped in and attempted to provide some comfort. He expressed empathy and stated that although he is white, he understands what it feels like to be a minority. While he cannot fully understand the experience of being a minority in America, I did appreciate his effort to acknowledge our feelings and the fact that he was the only employee who showed us any compassion. Based on this experience, I encourage people of color to be cautious when supporting Upstairs Pub, as our treatment made it clear that this is not an environment where we felt respected, protected, or supported.
