It took twenty two minutes for us to get our appetizer that was so small. We didn't feel like freezing outside to wait for our food that seemed like was never going to be served. Moved to Indiana many years ago and have always been a bit disappointed in our dining out experiences, either by food or service. Southern stone exceeded our expectations! Service was outstanding! Thank you so much Austin! Anticipated our needs so we never had to wait for anything and gave great recommendations. Food was delicious, hot and relatively quick considering the quality and the large group of other diners. It was my birthday dinner and my husband made reservations to ensure we got a table. We started with an appetizer of fried green tomatoes and then ordered the sweet tea brined hot honey chicken and smash burger with smoky Mac n cheese, collard greens, grits and fries. Best fried chicken and collard greens I've had since my grandmother passed. We each had two cocktails, the two old fashioneds and lemonade and southern tea with peach. We will definitely be back. Best to bring cash as there's a difference in charges if card is used. I doubt anything on the menu would disappoint so be adventurous! Parking was easy. Restaurant was clean and welcoming. If anything I'd ask for extra hot honey sauce and would've ordered an extra side of collard greens....maybe bring back the southern influenced poutine (intrigued me after seeing it on older menu). Food was delicious. Service was terrible. Maybe the server was having a bad day but it was SO slow. We waited so long for the waitress to return to pick up our checks so we could pay that we eventually got up and walked to the front to pay. Even standing there we still had to wait for several minutes. We were a party of 8 so gratuity was included in our check, however when we said we needed change back from our cash payments (there's an up charge if you do a card) we felt like it was an inconvenience for her to bring our change. The worst part of our experience is when the server literally lost a debit card. After looking and looking she said "well I don't have it, I don't know what to tell you." Came on a Sunday with a group of 5 without a reservation. We waited about 20 minutes to be seated which isn't an issue. But then, once seated, we had to wait a long time to even get coffee. I had to flag down our waiter about 30 min after to get a refill. Overall, our orders took over an hour to come out and we're extremely lackluster. Tables around us were getting their orders before us and had been seated after us. I had high hopes for this place because I love southern food and a good brunch. I got the Savannah Benedict with a poached egg (which was cooked all the way through). For $20, I'd rather have gotten something else because it was just okay and not what I expected. The crab meat on top of the fried pickles seems like canned crabmeat. The waitress was nice but seemed very new and unaware of the menu or even the condiments and coffee additives available. All were wrong. The main course came out way later than the appetizer. Maybe as much as 30 minutes later. Did the waitress forget to put our order in? This made us miss tailgating for the IU game which was disappointing. The main courses were so so, eggs not cooked as requested and the sausage came much later than the mains. This restaurant has potential, but the wait staff needs to be trained better and if the cooks would actually make stuff the way it was ordered that would be nice. It's been sad to see Southern Stone's fall from one of my most highly recommended spots in town to what they have become. I really do like the Po Boy, but it isn't consistently made. Was excited to try the new Honey Sriracha Shrimp appetizer. What they did to those poor shrimp should be a crime as they were hardly edible. The service we received was mediocre until we sent back the dish, really went downhill from there. I do recommend the catfish tacos and pasta dishes. While I will probably give them another shot in the future, I can't recommend this restaurant. read more

My partner and I went to Southern Stone tonight for our early Valentine's Day celebration ! The waitstaff was great. The Valentine's specials looked fantastic. We went for something off the regular menu as it was our first time visiting. I got the shrimp and grits. Super yummy and full of flavor ! It had just the right about of spice. The vegetables were sliced in a way that was just perfect. My partner had the smash burger and whatever their "smash" sauce is, it's amazing ! The buns were also moist enough to give it an extra amount of flavor. I absolutely loved the decor. It made it feel so homey. For dessert, we had the beignets. Not sure the chocolate sauce was the right call - I would have preferred then with just powdered sugar. Or maybe a powdered sugar and cinnamon blend. However, the texture was amazing and the taste was lovely ! Prices are actually on point, as well. Definitely recommend ! read more

If I could I would give this place a 0. We made a reservation for 2pm. We arrived early and they told us to wait for them to clear a table, which is fine. 50 mins go by and we ask about our table, to which we are told "we are so sorry but we are running behind with the food and the table that we want to seat you at is eating now". That's weird, because 50 mins before that you said you were cleaning one and it would be ready shortly, and suddenly there are people still eating there. We then began to talk to other tables, and they told us they had been there since 12:45 and haven't gotten food yet (it was 2:50 at this point). All we wanted was honesty, and Southern Stone could not give us that. Also, the bartender was so rude and did nothing but complain about how she hates her job. We will never be returning. I was glad to see so many people walk out after witnessing their horrible management and customer service. read more

We were very excited to try this spot before an IU basketball game with friends. The ambiance is great but the 4 top tables were more suited for a kindergarten classroom. It took about 20 minutes after ordering for our drinks to arrive. My husband and I ordered old fashioneds and were served in a silver julep cup because they were "out of rocks glasses," our reservation was at 5:30. They still decided to use the large square ice cube; which was too large for the cup and sat lodged in the cup not reaching the liquid, making it very difficult to drink. We ordered the corn bread with apple butter and chips and salsa for appetizers. The corn bread was cut into little slices, fairly average. We got about 16 chips, the standard salsa was served in a cup that the chips would not fit, but did receive a serving of the new pineapple salsa (served in a more adequate sized serving container). It took about 45 minutes for our food to arrive after ordering. It was quite clear that our plates had been sitting under the heat lamp for some time. We all ordered sandwiches and the bottom bun was soggy for all. My husband's cheddar grits were cold and not cheesy, as advertised. My friend's catfish sandwich was good but not hot. The fried green tomato BLT had potential but the ranch on the bottom slice of bread made it nearly impossible to pick up the sandwich, it was so soggy. Southern Stone advertises "comfort food with a southern charm." If "southern charm" means waiting a long time for everything you order without any updates or apology, then their motto is spot on. read more

After another 10 minutes of watching staff go by, not even a stop for a drink order or a "I will be back to get your order in a few minutes" or an "I'm sorry. We are short-staffed today," we left. We've been to Southern Stone in that past and have not been impressed. We heard they were under new ownership and new management so we thought we'd give them another try. In the past we would stand by the host stand and be completely ignored for at least five minutes even when the place was more than half empty. This time, the bartender actually made eye contact and said hello. The host greeted us immediately and seated us. The waitress came to our table right away to take our drink orders. The service was great and the food was delicious. It wasn't busy but it wasn't busy any of the other times we went there and had terrible service. Can't believe a Bloomington establishment that I have eaten at so many times has failed so badly. If you do not have the staff to run your restaurant on Mother's Day, please do not accept reservations. Over two hours our server and staff failed on every front. Most tables sat empty from previous customers for over an hour and were not bused, took more than 30 min after seating to take drink orders an hour to get our food after ordering. The restaurant was maybe at 25% capacity. Our family of six eats out at B-town restaurants multiple times a week and love supporting local. I tried to have a constructive conversation with the manager and was blown off. No way to run a business and with so many options in B-town, we will not be back. read more

Came down for a work trip and my coworkers recommended to come here and I am so glad we did! Our server Claire told us how they were transitioning into a new menu and recommended the chimichurri ribeye and scallops. We ended up getting the sriracha shrimp as our appetizer and the recommended entrees. The food was amazing and I had to steal some scallops from my coworker. Okay so before I even start my food review I want to be clear I am from the south, Georgia to be exact so I took this 'Southern Dining' very seriously. To start I got the fried green tomatoes, they came out pipping hot and the crust was crispy. I only needed to add salt and hot sauce. I ordered a sweet tea to drink but I think they left the 'sweet' in the kitchen. It was like drinking brown water. My waitress was polite so she brought me simple syrup to make it sweeter...... Still not what I'm used to but what the hell. Next I ordered the Catfish filet and collards. The catfish was well seasoned and crispy. The collards were huge!! Definitely not what I was used to lol but they were seasoned well. of course I added hot sauce to everything! This is likely one of the worst restaurants I have ever eaten at in Bloomington. Our waitress was nice, but checked on us way more than is necessary. We ordered two burgers, two salads and I had a beer. It was almost $70.00. The burgers were so dry they crumbled, were incredibly overcooked and frankly not really edible. The only bright spot was the beer was decent. We will not return to this restaurant. It's a shame since the concept/food is great in theory, but the execution falls very flat. read more

I absolutely love Southern Stone every time I come visit Bloomington. My first time eating here was for a Valentine's day dinner and it was so good we had to come back. I had ordered grilled Salmon with sweet potato fries, which was a 8/10. The 2nd time, their dinner menu changed a bit so I tried the Smoky Mac & Cheese with Pulled Pork on top, also a solid 8/10. The pulled pork flavor was a bit stronger than the mac & cheese itself, but I didn't mind, it was all delicious and very well made at the end of the day. The 3rd time, we came in for brunch. My french toast was just how I liked it - thick and crisp with fresh fruit on top and syrup in a little metal cup I enjoyed it more without so much cream cheese on top. This restaurant is and will always be one of my go-to places to eat. I always get excited about something different, and I find that doesn't usually happen at most restaurants where I end up ordering the same thing over and over. read more

I'm not sure how this place stays in business. We ordered two flights of soup and a salad. The soup flights only had one soup that was supposed to be on flight of 3. The other two soups were not advertised and were not something we would've ordered. Apparently no one updated the menu. The waitress did nothing to correct it, nor did she offer us a substitute after we told her that we did not order what we have gotten. The Cesar salad was not great either. The Cesar salad dressing was way overpowered with a mustard flavor. We spent over $50 on lunch for a side salad & small cup of soup each. It was poor service all around. Way back in the day before we discovered this gem, I assumed just by glancing at the dinner menu that there wouldn't be anything I could eat here (I eat very healthy, so no to low fried foods, carbs, and no land animal meat, just veggies and limited seas food) - technically yes there's a lot of fried and meat food, BUT thank goodness we stumbled upon their brunch! One of our all time favorite brunch spots, we come here almost every single Sunday, they always run brunch specials (really cool creations like Brie and blackberry grilled cheese, caprese sandwich, etc), and on their regular brunch menu they have scrambles, salads, salmon and eggs cooked to perfection, and even a breakfast burrito! The main reason we love them so much (besides the amazing and friendly staff, the managers are good friends of ours and they run the best shop), they are SO vegetarian and pescatarian friendly! They have plant based chorizo you can sub into the breakfast burrito or the scrambles, it's not listed in the menu but they also have impossible burgers patties you can sub in for any burger, and they always have veggie centric/friendly dishes outside of that. LOVE their brunch, do yourself a favor and go asap (Saturday's and Sundays until 2:30pm)! read more

40 min to get a cocktail. When they finally brought us our drinks we ordered a second round. Then 45 min to get a Caesar salad but they were out of dressing. Then they were out of Prosecco. So I asked for a Chardonnay. 20 min later I went to the bar to get it. Their food was meh. Salmon was ok but way too much salt on it. Cheesy grits didn't taste like anything. Chicken fried steak wasn't pounded enough so it was very thick and chewy. The batter used also didn't taste good. Waitress was slow. They were NOT prepared for anything. This spot is serving currently! My friend and I went out for brunch at the Southern Stone & it did not disappoint. After searching through open brunch options, we arrived at Southern Stone. We were greeted very nicely at the front hostess stand and sat immediately. It was about 10am on a Sunday. (Weather was phenomenal, so we are outside.) Our server, Nick,was very friendly and offered recommendations to us. I went for the Fried Green Tomatoe BLT and the fried green tomatoes were perfect. It takes a lot to please me with fried green tomatoes, mostly since my family has cooked them often with us growing up in the south, but these were totally comparable and had a beautiful texture to them. I would absolutely recommend going to Southern Stone. Even with the restrictions and social distancing in place, our visit was not compromised. Thank you! read more

Given the menu, we were excited to eat here. The concept is great, the execution less so. First off, service was friendly if intermittent at times. The restaurant inside is attractive and outside is an ample patio area in a quiet part of Bloomington. It took over a half hour for food to arrive, even though it was far from crowded. While my breakfast was good and so was the bloody mary, the fried chicken sandwich my wife ordered was more akin to a slider but at a sandwich price. My daughter's breakfast had cold ham and scrambled eggs. I had to go inside to find the server and asked for those to be recooked. He brought out a ramekin of eggs--which were warmed over but not hot. It's clear they hadn't made new eggs--a major fail. Ditto for the ham. There does not seem to be a lot of attention to quality control or the comments made on this and other platforms. Eventually, enough people catch on to know where not to go. Our dining experience was only saved by the dessert and company. They had live music which was entirely too loud and when asked to turn it down they said they had no control. Our food took 2.5 hrs to get to us. Our food was served Luke warm with no sides. Our server was very apologetic. When we walked in, the host was basically trying to persuade us to not wait for a table, it was very odd. She told us it would be 15-20 minutes for a table, and when we told her we were going to wait, didn't even ask us for a name for the table. We had to ask if she needed our name. Then after waiting around 30 minutes, we were seated. We ordered 2 appetizers and side salads before our meal. They had told us prior that any orders going in would take 45 minutes due to there only being 3 cooks working that night. We were very understanding and patient with our server and the wait times. However, the first appetizer came out about 40 minutes before they even brought out our 2nd appetizer. Once we received the 2nd app, we got our food about 10 minutes later. The food was overall very mid and average, and in my opinion extremely over priced. The fried pickles were good, the loaded fries were average, the crab cakes were dry and boring, and the burger was dry as well. Considering how long we were there for (7pm-9:30pm) and how much we spent ($96 before tip) it was very average food and we definitely could have went somewhere else for cheaper and better food in a less amount of time. However, I am not upset about the timing because we were warned, I am just upset with the timing of when our food came out like the appetizer coming right before our entrees in which I then had to ask for a box. Love that this place finally rebranded! I have only had a brunch at Southern Stone since they reopened, but it was delicious! The new ambiance is also wonderful ; white brick, cool feature walls, a closed kitchen and performance space for visiting musicians. There was a singer song writer when we visited and it gave our brunch a nice cafe vibe. As for food, I tried the veggie skillet and it was loaded with fresh veggies. Southern Stone has a comfortable and unique interior. Modern without being pretentious. I had the Fried Green Tomato Sandwich. Crispy, flavorful, and when paired with sweet potato fries, filling and delicious. My partner had the double smash burger. It was cooked to perfection, had a satisfying amount of condiments, and the cheese was at the perfect meltiness. Our server, Abby, was friendly, fast, and helpful. This was for a 1:00 brunch, which was not overly crowded. The dinner is also delicious, but there is inadequate parking in the evening. read more
