We were a bit skeptical upon arrival. The exterior has the look of a budget 1980s-style motel, and the driveway--which is shared with a semi-truck parking area--is quite rough with several large potholes. However, if you can look past the first impression, there is a lot to like here. Service & Check-in The hotel appears to run on a very small staff. When we arrived, the front desk was empty, but there was a note with a number to call. I called, and a gentleman arrived almost immediately. He was extremely kind and the check-in process was seamless. If you are willing to wait a minute or two for service, the staff is very responsive and helpful. We had two rooms, and both were clean, fairly modern, and very quiet. The beds were comfortable, and we appreciated the Fire TVs that allowed us to log into our own streaming apps. Dining & Bar There is a connected Bar & Grill that was clean and very inviting. We went over for a nightcap but were told they are still waiting on their liquor license. Since we were in town for a family Christmas dinner, we didn't eat a full meal there, but the menu prices were very reasonable--well below the average for this area. We'd definitely give the food a try on our next visit. The One Downside: Breakfast The only real disappointment was the "advertised" breakfast. It was very limited, consisting only of cereal, toast, and oatmeal packets. Most surprisingly, the "pastry" selection was just a small basket containing Twinkies and Hostess Frosted cupcakes. It's fine for a quick sugar fix, but don't expect a standard hotel breakfast spread. Verdict Despite the dated exterior and the "gas station" style breakfast, the rooms are great and the price is right. We would stay here again for the comfort and quiet, but we'll plan to grab breakfast elsewhere! read more

Room ok but dated. Breakfast? A joke. Coffee was muddy, cereal but no milk, bread left uncovered from the day before and toaster didn't work. The Grill- oh boy. Smothered chicken was microwaved a few too many times and still charged me. My sister got sick and vomited her country fried steak. Boxed mashed potatoes drowned in some unrecognizable white gravy. This review is for the restaurant only, we've never stayed at the hotel. Food is ok if you want no frills. It's more expensive than other diners in town. Very large portions, mostly fried food. Staff are friendly but not as efficient as needed at busy times. Iced tea is awful. You might as well get water. read more

We love it here. Have a room we really like. It's clean and comfortable and the staff is great. The food in the restraunt is very good. Large portions, great wait, staff. We eat and stay there whenever we need a getaway. It's close to home. Peanut is the cutest and sweetest greeter. read more

Stopped for supper on our way through town. Hadn't eaten here prior. Ordered the jumbo tenderloin. Jumbo is an underststement. It should be called the mega jumbo tenderloin. Had to fold the tenderloin in half. It was thick for a tenderloin before folding. I managed to finish the sandwich but not my fries. Excellent sandwich. read more

We stopped here after a recommendation from employees at the Dutch Country General Store. Nice small town diner feel. We ordered a half order of onion strings, I can't imagine ordering the full size, because the half size was massive! They are the thin and crispy type and the breading was well seasoned and fried perfectly. (We ended up taking half of them home) hubby ordered lasagna and it included a salad, I had their country fried steak (fried perfectly) with mashed potatoes and also included a salad, and the kiddo ordered his standard chicken strips with fries. Everything tasted fresh and seasoned well. Portions were large and we had leftovers. Every employee we had interactions with were great! If we are in the area again, we will definitely stop back! read more

Astounding! We weren't expecting much given the location, but wanted to try it anyway. Food is fresh and remarkably flavorful, and there's LOTS of it! Service was fast and friendly, atmosphere down-home but neat, tidy and comfortable. I ordered the chicken "quesadilla" - nothing Mexican about it - which was an enormous amount of delicious on a grilled flatbread. We'll be going back next time we're up in that neck of the woods, for sure! read more

Great burgers and dinners. Dining room is nice, but we usually do takeout after work, it's always ready quickly.

This is the place to be if you're hungry! One meal feeds two, it's got a bar, wine and great staff! If you're passing through stop, if you need a room, stop and if you're hungry want good food definitely stop! read more

Nice, family-run, place! The hotel room was comfortable and spacious. Hotel itself was a little aged, but *I* think it was charming. Front desk lady was super sweet and friendly. I didn't see staff at the desk overnight, but it could have been they were assisting in the busy grill/restaurant attached. Had a dinner and a breakfast there. Reuben sandwich was good, although if I ever am in that area again (highly unlikey, mind you) I would ask for lighter on the thousand island dressing. Prices for food were reasonable. Guests at hotel receive a coupon for a free breakfast, which was nice. The chance I would ever be in this area is slim, but if so, I'd def return. read more

Closed on Sundays & mondays. When you order room service they rip you off by only filling drink up 3/4 of the way and the food doesn't fit what the menu says. Also cold food. read more

Wow this is probably some of the best food I have had for awhile. I had the smothered chicken I changed out the green pepper for mushrooms. The portion sizes are huge enough to take half home for tomorrow. My husband had the chopped steak and said it was delicious as well. We received a loaf of bread that was also yummy. I was on my way back to Texas and stopped here to see my cousins in Bloomfield and they brought me here. This was some of the best food I've had in Iowa, particularly the Misfit which is a hamburger with bacon and peanut butter on it. The Reuven sandwich and the tenderloin were also excellent. This burger was better than the one in Keosauqua which was supposedly one of the top ten burgers in Iowa. This has to be one the top ten here at South Fork. read more

Don't expect much. I had a small, very salty bowl of beef vegetable soup with tiny pieces of beef. Spouse had a runny tuna salad sandwich. The daily special was goulash and was substantial in serving, but didn't order. read more

We saw all the local cars parked in front and pulled in. Best. Choice. Today. Great selection of daily specials, and the ribeye was out of this world. The staff is friendly and gives just the right amount of attention. If we come this way again (700+ miles from home) we will definitely stop! read more
