BE WARY OF OPENING A CD ONLINE. THEY CAN ASSIST YOU VIA PHONE EFFECTIVELY TO OPEN A CD. I applied as a new member to open and fund a CD online and to opening a savings account online. While I knew that a $25 minimum would need to be in the savings account, I had understood this could be funded separately from the CD account I opened, once my membership was approved. However, the CU diverted $25 to my savings automatically instead of allowing me to fund it separately. This meant that my CD wasn't fully funded and so diverted ALL my CD funds automatically to my savings account. I logged into the portal same day of CU membership approval $25 to fund the CD and was told via pop up message I'd need to call the credit union to initiate the process. When I reached out via their CU portal same day, the response also indicated a call was needed. When I was able to get ahold of the credit union by phone a week later, I was told that the CD needed to be funded the same day. I informed them of my efforts to do so, but this wasn't sufficient. They DID close my current CD and opened and funded a new one for me, and assured me there would be no fees (this recently occurred, so I'll update this review if any fees come later). While I'm ultimately satisfied with the result and do think phone support is effective and transparent, opening a CD online is not customer friendly and doesn't clearly disclose key details about how money will be handled, nor does it easily allow you to fund your account or transfer funds using online-only methods. Interestingly, by making it automatic that $25 is untouchable within the savings account until closure, they are making it automatic that the $15 membership is waived, ultimately SAVING members money. The issue, for me, is that it's unclear upon funding a new CD that the $25 will be diverted to the savings account, and will stall the funding of the CD. While I quickly determined the issue the day my application was approved, it's not easily remedied via online means. A call to the CU is needed. read more

Well, I came here on a mission, where else can you dump change and it go directly in your account, well that's up to $500... at $397, the machine broke, I waited what seemed like 15 mins, probably was not that long but it's 90 degrees outside and I am hot and irritated I asked for assistance, and waited and waited, when I asked the response someone will be with you. Unbeknownst to me the person who had knowledge of the machine was out to lunch. Finally, I got assistance from a nice young g lady named Selma, I wanted to be mad, but Selma was so sweet I could not even think of being mad, besides it was not her fault. She apologized, and I kindly accepted. It was a few mins , once she cleared the machine I realized that my husband's freaking wedding ring was in the coins and had dropped inside, damn the devil. I let Selma know and she promised to get it back to me in a week no worries, heck the dude did not even tell me he did not have it..we have been married for 15 years so I'm not tripping, he's mine. Anyway, I got two lights away, my phone rang and it was the beautifully amazing Selma, Ms Kim, I have your ring...yaaass. Customer Service should definitely improve. I found my replacement card however, I just wanted to know if my card was valid by asking if the last 4 digits from my card matched what they can view in their system. I was never aware of a member account number for Southland. If I'm being honest, I only know about account and routing numbers with banks in general. So for her to huff and puff through the phone was very unnecessary, unprofessional, and uncalled for. In Addition, I was with a trusted Guardian and had my phone on speaker to help me understand some of the questions I was being asked because, I will be honest, some parts I just misunderstood, not only that but, I'm more able to hear clear while listening on speaker, to prevent me having to always say, " May you repeat that?" Or " May you say that again?". Plus she didn't say anything important to want to be taken off of speaker, but I did take her off speaker out of respect of her asking... Overall, I just wanted to know if the last 4 digits of my account number matched on their system from my card. I feel like this Credit Union is racially biased against Blacks. I have seen white people come in with less & leave with more. I have been with this credit union for over 20 year with a perfect credit score, direct deposit, paid off two cars never late. I have Platinum credit card that I barely use & they offer me nothing. Brought my teen son into this branch yesterday to open his very first checking account. He was so excited which quickly diminished after our experience at this branch. The associate who helped us, Jalessa, was incredibly rude and unwelcoming from the moment we started and throughout the entire time. She made very little eye contact, got irritated with me after I noticed a discrepancy on his birthdate on the form because "she had to re-do all of it", cussed in front of my child out of frustration, never said a single please or thank you, and had attitude with every interaction. I have been a Southland member since the 1980's. The staff has always been responsive, helpful and courteous. I love the Carson branch because it is close by. The Carson branch employees are great as well. I have had fraud issues with my card and checking account (due to T Mobile's error) and it was handled expertly by the Carson Branch. I also appreciate the fraud alert company that calls when suspicious activity occurs on my card. The caught a $2,000.00 transaction that was not mine. Duke with car scouts was an amazing person to deal with. He called me and asked me what type of car I was looking for, what color I wanted and what was my budget. Not even an hour later he found my 2018 Toyota camry. And within a week he was dropping it off at my job. OH MY GAWWWDDDDDD. BREATH OF FRESH AIR. If there was a Bell for excellent customer service I would have rang the darn thing till it broke. I had just closed out my Mothers account at a different credit union for Poor POOR thee poorest customer service. There literally was no one but my Mom at this other credit union and they made her wait over 30 mins to see a personal banker. Did I Mention she was the only customer there. After seeing how my Mom was being treated I told her to close her account and come to Southland. When I walked in the Door the whole place was bustling with people. Every desk had a banker and a customer, there were folks in line, and yet I could BARELY cross the threshold before being waved down by a beautiful smiling face sitting behind a desk eager to help me. I tried to open a checking account online and the branch manager Patricia denied my application because I didn't verify myself in person at a branch?? I was never notified I had to go to the branch but I would of done so if I had to. I opened a checking account with a different bank the same day no problem. What a waste of my time! I forgot to mention that I would reply to the manager Patricia within less than an hour and she would reply the following day. I called and left voicemails to get updates and her voicemails stated she will call back before 5pm the same day if you left a message. She would reply daily at 4ish. This review is about the service and lack of communication that needs improvement. I suggest people bank someplace else. read more

This Southland location is outstanding. I was very impressed from the time my husband and I drove up. The parking lot was very organized. Plenty of clear painted arrows to show customers the entrance and exit. The parking slots were very spacious. So no trouble with parking. When I walked in I was also impressed with how spacious it was. My husband and I were greeted by a banker by the name of Donna. She had a very happy disposition of someone who loves what they do. She asked my husband and I of the reason we were there and made sure someone assisted us. She complimented me on my smile but I couldn't stop smiling because I was very impressed by the way my husband and I were being treated. As she walked away I notice that she was wearing an awesome pair of shoes. They had put me in the mind of the bank itself. When I asked her about them, she stated that the bank provided their employees with these shoes. I was too impressed. I love the pride that this branch has. Efrain was the banker who had taken care of our affairs. He was very professional and informative. My husband had a small complaint about the debit cards and the fact that they are not engraved, so with time the numbers on them are very hard to read. Efrain assured him that his card can be replaced the same day and that very soon the way the cards are being produced will be different in the aspect of reading the information off of it. Another thing that impressed me was the fact that he had a mini scanner in his desk that allowed him to scan our forms of ID's with such convience. I personally feel that this credit union stays on top of modern technology that allows service to be swift and comfortable. The desk chairs even had rollers in them making it easy to get up from the bankers desk. I'm proud to be apart of credit union such as this one. I last wrote a review April of 2018. Southland is milking our accounts. I deposited my check, they only credit $200 of it to start. I have been working at the same company and banking (Harbor before the merge) for the past 12 years. Now, as Southland they wait 48 hours to credit the full amount of the check(s) deposited. The worst! Do not join. I give credit union a trial period . I have not had good luck with them in the past and in this case it proved to be true . The ATM usually has some issue on the outside , but on the inside the personnel is (in general) condescending . From day one , when I signed on there was a bad attitude with the clerk ..but I figured , ow well, I'll use the ATM on the outside . This didnt happen . I think my one, admittedly major, problem is that you don't get informed of problems with your account when there are any. I had a check bounce which completely drained my account and I could only get the info by actively requesting for it. Later my card was cancelled but I was never informed of it, despite settling the bounced check issue in person. I only found out it was canceled during the holiday season, when they were closed, and bad to come in later to get it solved. Other than that they're quick, to the point, fair and polite. read more
