We fittingly tried Southland on our way back south to NC from VA. Except for the fried chicken, it really didn't highlight North Carolina's culinary talents very well. I tried the chopped, they called it minced, BBQ. It was very finely chopped, without any texture, and heavily seasoned with a vinegar-based sauce. It was definitely not the best Eastern NC 'Q I've eaten. At least the slaw seemed freshly made. I paid an up charge for sweet potato fries and was rewarded with a heaping helping of undercooked frozen sweet potato fries that were closer to tasteless than tasty. The hush puppies were just balls of bready blandness - yuck. My dining companion tried the fried chicken and pulled pork combo. She thought the fried chicken was good and based on the number of other Customers ordering it, this is Southland's main draw. The pulled pork was stringy strands of pork seasoned like the chopped 'Q; she tried a couple of bites and gave up. Our server was not attentive and seemed like she didn't really care too much. Ok Folks ... If you don't stop you will miss an interesting place. Lots of great snacks and drinks of course, as well as southern inspired gifts, trinkets and memorabilia. I have found the service friendly and helpful with a selection of bar b que choices that always taste great. The antique store next door always has an interesting collection to round out your shopping curiosity. The laid back feel is a nice respite from that long journey or your weekly jaunt over the border to the hustle and bustle of the tidewater area. Oh my goodness, I definitely do not like leaving 2 star reviews but either they need to improve or people need to be aware! The service is great, Becca was very kind, genuinely friendly and had the sweetest smile. The other servers were also very attentive and friendly so they're doing that part right! The prices are average and the restaurant and bathrooms are clean so they're doing that right too! The food though, oh gosh, the food is severely sub par. I got the mixed platter with fried chicken and pulled pork, hubby got the brisket platter. The fried chicken tasted old, not sure how to describe it, it felt and tasted old with a rubbery skin I could barely chew. The pulled pork was not edible, it was so dry I couldn't chew it enough to swallow it! Hubby said the Mac and cheese was amazing and I thoroughly enjoyed the mashed potatoes! Let's talk about the brisket though! Paper thin slices of meat, reheated on a grill top and smothered in a weird gravy. Pretty much leather straps! This is for the restaurant specifically because we preordered $100 worth of food to be picked up at 6pm. We live an hour away and wanted to grab on our way back from NC. We arrived at 5:45, a bit early to be fair, but then we had to wait (with a screaming toddler in the car) for over an hour. Our food wasn't ready for pick up until 6:52pm. Absolutely insane. To make matters worse they didn't even apologize or try and rush. It just is what it is. Worst customer service and experience. Highly recommend to not preorder from the restaurant. Just go into the trade and order once there, guess what... you get it pretty darn fast. How's the food taste, couldn't tell you yet since we still have 30 minutes until we get home. read more

Best fried chicken in the area! The pulled pork bbq is also insanely good with the vinegar sauce. They're not open every day so make sure you're checking the times as they change during high and low seasons for travel in the outer banks. Silly knickknacks for sale in the store area (in front of the gas pumps) and the restaurant is set apart. Catering to-go options as well. Highly recommend the cucumber salad that is a fresh vinegar cucumber reminiscent of summers with my grandma. We stopped here on a whim on our way back to Pennsylvania after a beautiful vacation in Frisco, NC. We arrived just in time for their Sunday brunch and we were amazed by the delicious spread. Exceptional quality food for an extremely reasonable price. Most of all the service was incredible. Tammy and Yolanda (Yo-Yo) were so kind and helpful. Came for breakfast and had lunch...so not mad about that! We didn't do our homework, breakfast is over at 11am Great service, great food and prices weren't bad at all. We will have to go back for breakfast! I had the chicken and bbq platter with cucumber salad and collard greens and the husband had fried flounder and shrimp with the salad bar, he also had a cup of vegetable beef soup with the salad bar. I can't say enough! The fried foods that we both had were lightly breaded and not greasy! The fried chicken was so good, I'm sad I gave my hubby a leg...I wanted it all!!! I was looking at the rating and review for this place and a solid 4-stars on Yelp, so I thought why not, I'd give it a try. Came here last Friday, looking to try North Carolina BBQ for the first time. My division was nearby at Academi for a range day, and this was the closest spot that offered BBQ so I thought I'd give it a shot. Once I arrived, I saw the restaurant was connected to a few shops and a tobacco shop as well, which I thought was pretty cool. I spoke with this young man who was working behind the counter of the restaurant, and he explained to me how North Carolina's BBQ has a vinegar based sauce and the flavor offers levels of both sweet and tangy. I opted for the pulled pork platter, with a side of mac n cheese and house-made coleslaw. Total came out to about $10 and change which wasn't bad at all. I took a short walk around the shops, which offered some pretty interesting stuff like hand-made jewelry, local trinkets, North Carolina souvenirs, just to name a few. I also saw a very interesting display of different flavor jams, spreads, butters and honey. The wait for the food wasn't long; I think I waited like ten minutes. The girl who called my order number also gave me some small containers of this sweet BBQ sauce. It was my bad that I should've double checked the food at the place but at the same time, what in the actual ****?? When I got back to the range and sat down and opened it up, instead of getting pulled pork, I got what tasted like chicken instead. And on top of that, it was some dry ass chicken. I did like the tangy sauce with a little bit of heat to it, but I barely finished half the meat before dumping it. The mac n cheese tasted literally like Velveeta. Can't believe a BBQ joint doesn't even make their own mac n cheese. The star of the whole experience was their coleslaw, which was actually quite good! What a mess of a first experience. The food was good. Ate here on my way home from a month in GA and was having a hard time with all the fried foods along the road, that are like the only options other than Zaxby's. From the look of it, I wasn't very excited, but the flavor in my chicken and dumplings was layered and artful, and the chicken was good quality, with no creepy parts thrown in there. The fried stuff was pretty linear in taste--fried, but decent quality fried nonetheless. The Mac-n-cheese was standard but not bad. My son ate a lot and loved the danish bread thing they gave us! We thought we would stop at Southland on our way home. We were seated quickly and ordered. An hour later our food had not arrived. We were told they were filling to go orders first. We ended up leaving. Wish they would have told us before we sat down and waisted an hour. I feel sorry for the waitress. They probably didn't make much in tips since others walked out as well. We ended up going next door to Southlands fast food restaurant. I have to say this was the worst BBQ I have ever had. The management really should have been up front with their guests and let us know there would be a long wait. Do your self a favor and go somewhere else. read more

The Dark Chicken Dinner: the fried chicken was crispy on the outside and juicy&tender on the inside. Be careful, it's really hot, let it cool before chomping it down. Southland Trade is located within a few miles of NC/VA border located in Moyock. It's literally a stone's throw away from their "competitor" the Border Station. This place is essentially a tourist trap. They have trinkets, t shirts, local fudge/snacks, a restaurant, etc but you can tell that a lot of the customers were either passing through or not locals. With that said, I still had a good experience walking throughout the whole place to see what they had to offer. I ended up buying some legit pork rinds and a chocolate malt as snacks on the way home. I also came to Southland per a recommendation from a local to get some ahem fireworks. They carried a decent amount of fountains, sparklers, bottle rockets, variety packs etc. I bought a few things but nothing too crazy. If you're looking for the good stuff like finales, mortars, roman candles, aerial stuff, you will NOT find them here, unfortunately. I even asked if they had any in the "back" and I was met with disappointment. If you're looking for a quick pit stop after your cross over the VA/NC border, I would recommend coming here! read more

The food takes a few minutes to prepare, but they refresh your drinks quickly and it's well worth it!!! The chicken is next-level (I got the dark meat lunch) and it comes with two sides, plus hush puppies or a roll. The hush puppies were easily the BEST I've ever eaten- light, fluffy, perfectly crisp. The fried okra was crisp and delicious. Next door, there's a little gift shop with some useful stuff and some fun stuff- something for everyone, plus gas and lottery, and fountain drinks to go. Baby and bathroom gender note: the restaurant has a THIRD bathroom (for any gender) with a changing table inside. The changing table belt is broken, but it was pretty clean. High chairs are also available and functional in the restaurant (most places have at least one broken strap). read more

This place has been a Moyock/OBX-tourist staple for as long as I've been alive. The restaurant serves your classic southern cooking. Their regular breakfast menu is simple but basically the only sit down breakfast you'll find in the area. Today I had the waffle which was below average, lacking flavor. My dad's hash brown casserole was just made and very yummy. The dinner buffet is awesome & complete with all of the staples- I especially enjoy their salad bar despite the price. The servers are as sweet as can be. Southland gifts/snack bar is your perfect pit stop. The food they sell on that side to me, is often better than the restaurant. Quick & tasty BBQ. I sometimes stop in while in town for a scoop of ice cream and walk around to check out the gifts and miscellaneous items they sell. This place will probably not serve your "all-time-favorite" anything, but it usually doesn't disappoint comparatively to the options in the area. On the way back from the outer banks, stopped in for bbq. I have been here numerous times and the food is always fast and good. They closed at 830 and we got here at 810. I was very disappointed to hear the cashier state they were out of bbq. Wow they have numerous tubs of bbq in their cooler for sale. For dessert, I had a very thin slice of chocolate cake, a Jell-O and a bite the banana pudding from my boyfriend. This is the first time that i've been to a buffet place and I love every single food, especially the fired chicken of course. The breading of the fried chicken is thin and crunchy, and the meat is so flavorful. I like to dip my fried chicken into brown gravy but tbh you will have a full month of flavor without any dressing. The scrambled eggs are super buttery and fluffy, and this kind of eggs are hard to find in any restaurants nowadays. All desserts are wonderful, all are not too sweet, which I prefer. I visit Southland at least once a week either for lunch or for dinner and sometimes for breakfast. Southland is not the best looking eatery from the street but the food is to die for if you enjoy southern cuisine. The lunch and dinner menu choices range from some of the best fried chicken I have tasted, delicious BBQ and seafood platters. They also offer Brunswick Stew that tastes like you are eating in your grandmas' kitchen. It is full of large chunks of chicken, carrots, and potatoes! It is delish!
