Everything was pretty decent. Green beans are likely from a can and the Mac n cheese doesn't have much flavor. The chicken doesn't either until you put the sauce on it. Once the sauce is on it gets way better and if you combine the Mac n cheese with the pulled pork and the sauce you got something special. Maybe even consider making a pulled pork Mac n cheese with the pulled pork marinated in that sauce . I feel like you get a decent amount of food for that price as well. It's hard to believe it's been nearly four years since my original review of Southside BBQ. I gave it five stars then and it is still a solid five star experience. My usual order is the combo meal with pork bbq, chicken leg quarter and two sides. They generously include a roll and a small cup of their delicious coleslaw along with a bit of their wonderful Pig Sauce. I usually select baked beans and macaroni & cheese as my sides. I think the baked beans are the best I've ever had and the Carolina-style pork bbq is also among the best I've experienced. The combo meal is priced at only $10 which is an amazing value. Every Wednesday they offer Chicken & Dumplings. Be sure to try it because it's really delicious. For dessert they offer delicious brownies every day as well as a variety of other desserts that vary from day to day. I really love the banana pudding and the lemon blueberry pound cake. Everything on the menu is homemade and really delicious. You will be pleased no matter what you choose to order. There is no seating so this is strictly a takeout restaurant. They offer catering services as well. Street parking is available and their is convenient free parking available across the street. If you haven't tried Southside BBQ & Catering you don't know what you are missing. Recently, Southern Living Magazine selected Southside as the fourth best bbq in Virginia. That's quite an honor but I have tried the restaurant they rated number one and I like Southside a lot more. I really appreciate this locally owned and operated restaurant. Maybe I came on an off day. I ordered the leg quarter and barbecue combo for lunch. The chicken tasted burnt and was extremely dry. The green beans and mac and cheese were pretty good. I would give the food 2 stars because the chicken was terrible (but it could just be an off day). I would definitely try this place again because the customer service was good customer service. I was asked to plan a luncheon for the staff, I gave 3 different choices (pasta, BBQ, and Mexican). BBQ was the choice. I had never heard of Southside but they were able to prepare and deliver at the time we needed. Customer service was spot on-helpful and polite. The food came on time and looked wonderful. We had pork BBQ, shredded chicken, mac n cheese, green beans, and slaw. Oh, I can't forget about the amazing browning!!!!! They were worth the call. Everyone raved about the food...."best BBQ we've ever ordered, this is really good-I like this place, good food-we should keep them in mind for next time" we just a few comments from my co-workers. I've only recently heard of this establishment via the local news (or was it a write up in the Va Pilot?) and after seeing so many great reviews I was psyched to try it out. First of all, the location is in historic South Norfolk which was actually pretty cool. The establishment is one of the absolute cleanest I've ever seen! It has a perfect health score to boot! Walking up, it smelled like good bbq smoke so that's always a plus. They don't have anywhere to eat inside but they do have several tables out of the side. Service was incredibly friendly and she gave us a nice verbal description of their simplified menu. We already knew we were there for the pork bbq so it was only a matter of what type (sandwich or platter w roll) and which sides. Husband got sandwich platter and I got the platter with a roll. We both got Mac and cheese. I had green beans. He opted for baked beans. We got it to go bc the sun was far too strong that early afternoon to sit at one of their tables and we only live about 10-15 min away. We agreed it is an all around people pleaser bbq restaurant. The pork was a tad on the dry side but it had a decent smoke. I appreciated the fact that the meat was meat and not a bunch of chewy fat pieces like you get at other places sometimes. I don't know what the one reviewer on here was talking about w regard to being overly vinegary bc it didn't taste like any vinegar was on it beyond the dark vinegar based sauce they included for us on the side to put on as we so desired. (Which I thought was pretty good) Green beans were good. Not salty or overly fatty. His baked beans were good. Mac and cheese looked divine but it lacked flavor for both of us. Mind you, we aren't people who add salt after cooking to most anything though we do enjoy herbs, spices and other flavors. Overall not my favorite bbq joint - that one goes to Pungo Boys out in Pungo but a reasonable and friendly place where you'd be assured nothing was too spicy or overly salty for family and friends. The prices were super great esp for a bbq restaurant in this day. Ample meat platter for $10?!? Family meal deal for $25?!? You really can't beat that anywhere. I tried this place yesterday. To start the staff were great and friendly. The food however was just not good. I got a Big Boy pulled pork BBQ sandwich. That size of it lived up to its name. However, It's taste was not very pleasing. There was meat in it that I could not eat because it was so tough, overcooked possibly. My dog wouldn't even eat it. The actual soft, shredded bbq pork consistently was ok. However It was doused in vinegar base. A little is tolerable but every bite I tasted vinegar much more than the meat itself. It's the worst bbq sandwich ive had in a long time. Im not happy writing this but the business and future customers need to know. Maybe make some changes to the BBQ type or add a non-vinegar style? I stopped in this evening for the first time, and it won't be my last. I ordered 2 pulled pork and 2 pulled chicken sandwiches. My sister raved about the smoky flavor of the pork and she said the Mac n Cheese and baked beans were excellent. I concur! There are many BBQ places around here, but none of them have traditional pork smoked and pulled with Joe's Happy Pig sauce included. No gimmicky flavor choices, just straight-up classic goodness. On a sandwich, the meat is of perfect consistency. It is not so wet that the bun falls apart, nor is it dry. I have so far only enjoyed the regular, 3oz sandwich, but am tempted every time to go for the 5oz Big Pig. I can't recommend the sides enough, they round out a perfect meal. "Homemade" has been marketed to death, but in this store it happens daily. I can't vouch for the green beans, not a fan. The baked beans and macaroni & cheese, however, will make you wish you got more to take home with you. Southside BBQ is a local gem to me.
