Maybe I came on an off day. I ordered the leg quarter and barbecue combo for lunch. The chicken tasted burnt and was extremely dry. The green beans and mac and cheese were pretty good. I would give the food 2 stars because the chicken was terrible (but it could just be an off day). I would definitely try this place again because the customer service was good customer service. The person at the cash register was friendly.

Order the pulled pork regular sandwich and Chicken and Dumplings. The pulled pork has a smoke flavor it is the BEST. The tangy sauce is a little spicy for me. The chicken and dumplings were definitely homemade. I will be returning to Southside.

It has been nearly three weeks; I can stop thinking about No Frill Bar and Grill…read more I'm a military spouse, so I know my time in Hampton Roads is coming to an end soon. I visited a Hampton Roads Restaurant group on FB and asked if someone was visiting from out of town: What is your go-to place to take them? Out of 90+ comments, No Frill Bar and Grill was mentioned the most - six times! So when I finally had a day off and some other business to tend to in Norfolk, it was the perfect excuse to finally try them. No Frill Bar and Grill has been open for nearly 30 years by Jerry Meltsner. Jerry's nephew Jon Kliner helps co-own and manage operations. It originally opened on Tidewater Drive, but the space didn't allow for much growth - 10 years later, he moved to a location off Colley Avenue and Spotswood Avenue. Growth continued, moving from counter service to table service. The second location, at 1620 Laskin Road in Virginia Beach, opened in 2005. The restaurant's longevity stems from quality, consistency, price, service, and staff who genuinely care about the business and serving the community. I asked the server for her opinion on two options - Salmon, Shrimp and grits won. The dish was incredible: lightly blackened salmon, for once blackened food that doesn't just taste like salt. I don't dine with the swine, so I asked for no andouille sausage. The sautéed shrimp, caramelized onions, tomatoes, and spinach simmered in Norfolk Canyon ale sauce over cheesy grits and Boursin lavash cracker. The cheesy grits were smooth, and the Boursin lavash cracker was a nice touch. The Boursin added extra creaminess to the meal. The cracker wasn't really a cracker - more like little toasted bread. After this first meal, I know two things for sure: 1. I definitely understand why it is such a local favorite, and 2. I will be back.

Coopers Restaurant provided an exceptional experience for our family's repass for 50+ guests on a…read moreFriday at noon. Initially, I resisted choosing Coopers due to its lack of aesthetic decor and worries about how it would compare to pricier local venues requiring steep deposits. However, turning to Coopers turned out to be the best decision we could have made for a celebration of life repass. The staff accommodated our diverse group seamlessly. Cheri and the servers delivered next-level service, expertly managing a large crowd and handling every drink order with absolute grace. They seated family and friends up on a riser while thoughtfully arranging floor seating for our mature guests in their 80s using walkers and wheelchairs. While the venue's interior is basic, the food was the true highlight for everyone from ages 1 to 100. The Meats: The fried chicken was seasoned to perfection, and the baked chicken was fall-off-the-bone tender. The smothered pork chops with onions were so tender they could be cut with a fork, and the hot wings were a massive hit that disappeared quickly. The peel-and-eat shrimp was well-seasoned, and the shrimp fried rice--though a unique spin with plenty of shrimp and vegetables--was just average. The only real miss was the fried fish (Tilapia or Whiting), which had a fishy smell that could be resolved by washing it after defrosting. Pig feet looked tender and well seasoned I was told. The Sides: The candied yams were the undisputed star of the side dishes with just the right amount of sugar and syrup. The mashed potatoes tasted genuinely homemade, and the cabbage was a hit for most with a nice flavor profile. The collard greens, green beans, and macaroni and cheese drew mixed reviews, leaning middle-of-the-road, while the salad bar and cold salads like potato and macaroni salad were solid additions. Vegan/Vegatrian - Salad bar (Please ask question on the other sides) Collard Greens and String Beans may have meat or meat broth. Pescatarian - Peel and eat shrimp and fried fish STANDING OVATION to the cooks in the back they need more recognition of being able to cook for a diverse age and taste buds. Please keep in mind these cooks are cooking for a large diverse crowd some patrons have food restrictions due to medical issues and cannot have highly seasoned and spicy foods. So, the cooks cannot be creative with the seasons like other restaurants or your home. A must try is the Chicken (Fried and Baked), Smothered Pork Chops, Turkey Wings(Sunday), Cabbage and Yams. These are solid staples everyday of the week. Coopers restuarant offered incredible value, avoiding the exorbitant hundreds or thousands of dollars charged by traditional catering halls/restuarants for uncertain headcounts, and ensured we didn't waste food. Most importantly, it gave us a spacious, welcoming environment to fellowship and honor a loved one together. If you need a accommodating venue with great food and reasonable pricing for a large group, seriously consider Coopers restuarant.

Fresh, flavorful, and a great gluten free option if you're looking for something a little lighter. The service was excellent from start to finish. We always choose the Greenbrier location in Chesapeake since there's ample parking available, and the service is very good. Tonight I tried a new salad, the Lemon Basil Harvest Blend, and I appreciated our server, Jackeline M for asking if I preferred the dressing on the side. Yes, please! I'm so glad she asked! This mixed greens salad has some star ingredients that caught my eye: charred artichokes, green olives, and grilled balsamic chicken. Yum. I'll be ordering this salad again. My bestie ordered her favorite bc combo with Tomato Soup and the Wine Country salad. She says that soup and salad combo never disappoints. She finished it! But, we always save room to share a trusty bc favorite dessert: the Wimbledon (strawberries with whipped cream crepes). Although it's no longer on the menu, the Greenbrier location always whips it up for us when we ask. It's an oldie, and a goodie! We enjoy the cozy atmosphere of Baker's Crust and find that our dinner catch ups over their delicious food and dessert are always long overdue. I boxed half of my salad to take home and Jackeline was kind in bringing me extra salad dressing to go. Very thoughtful. We'll be back soon!
