While my sister was in town, she was craving some BBQ so we stopped in to Donnie's Barbecue since it was nearby. We were greeted as soon as we walked in and the smell of the barbecue made our mouth water, it smelled amazing. Since we're both foodies, we wanted to try all the things so she decided on the BBQ Chicken and the Kansas City "Meat Candy" Platter. She chose Mac & Cheese and Green Beans. I decided on the Brisket & Kansas City Sweet Pork Platter with Cole Slaw, Baked Beans and Potato Salad, Cornbread came with both. We also ordered the Smoked Chicken Salad and Banana Pudding. We decided to dine in and so we could enjoy our food while it was fresh. While we waited, we sampled the BBQ sauces at the table and the Mop sauce was phenomenal. It was sweet and tangy with a little bit of spice, it was great. The food was served pretty quickly but unfortunately, we didn't enjoy most of it. The BBQ Chicken was dry, the Meat Candy was hard, and the Brisket wasn't tender at all. The Cole Slaw tasted like shredded cabbage, nothing else, and the Potato Salad and Mac & Cheese were flavorless. I did enjoy the Kansas City Sweet Pork, especially with the Mop Sauce and the Baked Beans were pretty good. The Smoked Chicken Salad was just okay. The Banana Pudding was literally instant banana pudding with a few vanilla wafers, topped with whipped cream, it was very disappointing. I've been wanting to try Donnie's Barbecue for quite a while but after that experience, I probably won't be returning unfortunately. read more

I think one of the nice things about barbecue is that there's so many different ways to flavor it and make it your own. Great locally owned bbq place near General Booth/Redmill area. I needed some quick lunch while I was nearby and walked to Donnie's. First time here, the owners were very welcoming. I ordered brisket and sausage and it did NOT disappoint. I swear, you can tell when the bbq was made with heart. The brisket was some of the best brisket I've had in the area/EVER. With some improvements the food could be average. Currently, it is sorely lacking. Wanted to like it. Tried hard to like it but was not meant to be. The Mac and cheese was mushy and disgusting and looked like potato salad. The smoked chicken wings were greasy. The brisket was the best part of the meal and it needed to cook longer because the day had not yet begun to render. The beans were pretty good and piping hot. Pulled chicken was drenched in sauce so I have no idea how the meat actually Tasted but the sauce was decent. Service was good and the pitmaster was super pleasant. I had heard some good things about this place, so my mom and I decided to check this place out. With this place being in a shopping center, parking was not hard to come by as well. Our visit was on July 22, 2020. We came in around 4 pm that day, so it wasn't busy at all. We were immediately greeted when we came in and then proceeded to look over the menu. After looking over the menu, we both went with the # Platter, which includes two meats and two sides. For the meats I went with pulled pork and brisket. For the sides I went with the macaroni and cheese and two additional cornbread. My mom went with double brisket with cole slaw and macaroni and cheese as her sides. While waiting for the order to be ready, we talked for a bit with the owner and gave us some info about the place. Given the current Covid-19 situation, all orders are for takeout only; dine in is currently unavailable. After a few minutes, our order was ready to be picked up and paid for. We then took it home to eat. The pork and brisket were nice and tender. The sauces that I got for it were good with them as well. The cornbread was warm and soft, and the macaroni and cheese was great too. Overall, we had a great experience here and the food was as well. This is now a favorite barbecue spot for me. They have the best sign. Barbecue in huge letters. My husband saw the sign from the street and couldn't pull in fast enough. Everyone loves barbecue. Staff and owner very nice. Super clean restaurant. Absolutely love the big pump barbecue sauce area. We tried them all. I personally LOVE the MOP sauce. It has everything you want in a sauce. Slightly sweet with a twang of vinegar finishing off with a little heat on the tail end. Bravo!!! We got the North Carolina Pulled Pork hand held. Very good. You don't need to add anything to it. Good bun and a hefty amount of meat. Yummm. We also got the Smoked Cluck Cluck hand held. This was a perfect sandwich. Chicken was seasoned well and very tender. I'm definitely getting this again. I added a little MOP sauce to mine and my husband liked the chipotle sauce. Good sides to choose from. The Mac and cheese was a hit!!!! With all that said. I'm a big into fries. Just picked up 1lb of the Pork Ribs and 1lb of the Meat Candy to eat in our Oceanfront room, all I can say is HOLY COW this is definitely delicious!!!! I've been on the fence trying to decide if I want to go with 3 or 4 stars for Donnie's. Truthfully, I thought it was "a-ok." I visited a few weeks ago when they were at Smartmouth Pilot House at the Oceanfront. Service was fast and friendly. He was patient with my questions and gave me a few suggestions when I was indecisive. I ended up going for the mac with pulled pork and tangy BBQ. It was okay and definitely filled me up. When I had the opportunity to eat the leftovers though, I opted to pass. The mac was just okay, nothing I was really excited about. I liked the sweet and spicy kick that the bbq sauce added, but the pork just wan't very exciting to me. It wasn't bad, just not "worth the calories." I had just gotten a similar meal at a different local BBQ shop about a week earlier that absolutely blew me away. I am still craving it weeks later. I almost gave this four stars, knowing that BBQ just isn't my favorite type of food. However, since I've tasted the same dish at another local spot and loved it- I've gotta stick with the "a-ok" assessment. I love witnessing these types of interactions and just figured I'd share that with y'all; that in itself was a 2 sentence verbal review. Donnie's BBQ is located in the Strawbridge Shopping Center, where Whiskey Kitchen and Regal Cinema are. It's near the Food Lion. Small spot but good amount of seating. It's clean, with lots of pops of orange color. I love the big chalkboard menu. You can either order with whoever is working register, or you can order at the kiosk yourself with a touchscreen and pay with card. We went with the self order. Very easy to navigate. They serve the usual BBQ spot offerings - ribs, all the smoked meats, bbq sandwiches, all the sauces, and a couple of desserts. Sandwiches, platters, meat-to-go. Pricing is fair and average for BBQ! What did we get? Hubby got burnt ends, I got the NC pulled pork sandwich, a side of beans, and the banana pudding dessert! Total was about $35 without tip. I loved everything but next time I will definitely ask for my sandwich with the meat and bread separated so the bottom doesn't get soggy. My own fault. We got it to go and enjoyed it all at home. The beans were perfect with its sweetness and savory flavors, and even had bits of meat in it. Perfect complement to the vinegar of the NC pulled pork. The banana pudding, amazing. I had the opportunity to visit this establishment and let me tell you........ this place is amazing!! In this area most of the barbecue is North Carolina barbecue and everyone seem to love it, except me! I am a true southern belle and grew up on Memphis Barbecue and this place reminds me of the barbecue from the days of my youth! The dining area was super clean and I was greeted immediately when I walked in the door! The customer service was excellent! Now the food was beyond excellent the brisket sandwich was juicy and very tender! That meat candy!!!!! Melts in your mouth delicious!! That Kansas City barbecue sauce is a little piece of heaven on your tongue! Only one thing I was sad about was he sold out of ribs just before I got there. I highly recommend this place! Went here on a whim while vacationing in VA Beach. Nice friendly staff. Ordered the 3 meat try so I could try a few things. The ribs were good. Nice smoke flavor on them and they worked well with the mop sauce. Also got the meat candy (burnt ends). They were ok. Very tender but ridiculously fatty (and yes I know the point is fatty but this was a bit much). I also got the spicy sausage. That was probably my favorite. Reminded me of a spicy Italian sausage only slightly different. Lastly I got collard greens and Mac n cheese as my sides. Both were good but the greens were a little sweeter than I like them. I wish I had photos to share but It was so good, and gone so quickly. I had the brisket sandwich with Carolina vinegar sauce and a side of the greens. The brisket was literally melt-in-your-mouth good, smoky with that beautiful red smoke ring and deep flavor. The greens were flavorful and cooked just right. My spouse had the "meat candy" specialty, which lived up to the name for sure, and the coleslaw, which I'll definitely have next time. The staff was quick and friendly and chatty, which I like as a local. We'll definitely be back soon. I hope that more people find out about this place, since I want them to stick around a while. Veteran owned. Clean establishment. I enjoyed reading the mission statement on the chalkboard. I am a pescatarian, however my husband enjoy ribs. I ate several sides. Owner was very friendly and we arrived 6 minutes before closing so I was rushing to enter. The owner said " that he would not close the doors on me". While many barbecue places have come through this part of Virginia Beach, none seem to stay for too long. But when it comes to Donnie's I see them having a long future here. The food is absolutely amazing. Tonight I had the Show Stopper Mac and Cheese and my son had the ST Louis style ribs with baked beans and Mac and cheese. While I thoroughly enjoyed my Show Stopper (perfect amount of heat!), my son could not stop raving about his ribs and beans! Hearing his compliments I had to try them myself and boy was he right! The meat was cooked perfectly, the sauce was absolutely wonderful and all the food tasted nice and fresh. The decor is a wonderful blend of modern and southern and the staff was very nice.
