Great place to grab a beer and watch the game. Kinda loud and usually busy this is a great neighborhood bar and grill.

If you ever visit Slidell, LA I highly recommend this restaurant. We started with the Crawfish Balls. They are deep fried crawfish meat and stuffing served with a very tangy remoulade sauce. For entrees I had the muffalatta and my companions opted for the Southern Fried Steak with Gravy and the Red Beans and Rice with Smoked Sausage. The Souuthern Fried steak was tasty. Served with a side of Vegatable and Beef Soup, also tasty. The Red Beans and rice were not the best we've had (and not nearly as good as I make it at home) but still quite good. An extra link of grilled sausage was served on the side as well as a piece of garlic bread and the sausage was delicious. The Muffalatte was clearly the star of the show. Served on seemingly fresh baked and slightly toasted bread, it was stuffed with ham, mortadella, genoa salami, provolone, and olive salad. The atmosphere was early Marine Corps and the restaurant included a full bar which was serving happy hour specials when we arrived. It was a large open area with hardwood floors, which made it quite loud, but the food was very good. read more

I've come here a few times to watch a World Cup game and have been very pleasantly suprised. Their happy hour is awesome. $2 beer! I had the Yellowfin Tuna salad and it was amazing. They cooked it just like I wanted and the amount of tuna was impressive. The servers are friendly. read more

I ate lunch at the Southside Cafe in Slidell, LA on 2/10/2014. It was my first time there. Great food. I had half a Muffaletta for $9.99 (and it was huge - see photo) plus a Chicken & Sausage Gumbo for $3.99. My Coffee was $1.99 as was a Side of Coleslaw to go. Just finished up our first meal here, I wasn't starving so I ordered a side salad (they have great honey mustard) and a bowl Of chicken and sausage gumbo, the gumbo was awesome! My fiancé ordered the shrimp basket, with a salad and chicken/sausage gumbo, the basket had tons of shrimp in it and was very good, I had to try a couple. :) The atmosphere is really cool, great decor! Also, our server was very sweet. We will be back! Apparently they have brunch all day Sundays so we may come back on a Sunday for that! read more

This is a great place for Slidell, LA We always start with the Spinach dip and fried pita chips. The portions are always generous, and the service is fairly quick...especially since it is always packed to the gill. The first time I went...I had a burger which was delicious, and huge. This time...I got a local favorite...Hamburger steak and fries. My dad got a shrimp po-boy which was over flowing with shrimp, and my mom got a patty melt which she had a hard time finishing. I didn't see anyone at the cafe who looked like they were leaving hungry, and I sure didn't. I read the reviews below and thought that Hamburger Steak sounded good. One of my two traveling partners had the same and the other tried the stuffed shrimp. We'd started with a pitcher of Abita Pale and an order of calimari. I had the vegetable beef soup of the day and the other two had gumbo. Good food and plenty of it. The bill was less than I expected and we left satisfied. read more

Headed home from NOLA and needed lunch so we found Southside Cafe and we are so glad we did! We ordered the French Onion Soup, Stuffed Mushrooms, Bayou Bird, Big Mo Jamma, and a Bloody Mary! Everything exceeded my expectations! If you come through Slidell, do not pass up this food! It was amazing, and our bill was surprisingly cheap after ordering all of this food! We ate there last night, service was terrible- food was mediocre. Not what I expected! Server was more concerned with the larger party because I'm sure she thought her tip would be bigger. She neglected us, and hence got minimal tip- which honestly should have been no tip. The seafood platter was less than desirable. Fish were mushy and not even salted. Oysters were watery and disgusting, and soft shell crab weren't seasoned at all. Fried shrimp were ok. Not what I expect for a place that claims to know southern & creole food! read more

When we first moved to Slidell we ate Southside twice a week. It just never gets old! It's home cooking at an affordable price. The fried mushrooms are delicious! All of the beef tastes like high quality steak. Roast beef poboys are great and the seafood is SUPER fresh! We could eat here all the time. We are vacationing in the Gulf Shores area. Drove to New Orleans for the day. on our drive back saw the sign on I-10 for this cafe. we always like to try different places for dinner. honestly, if not for the small signs with arrows we might not have found it. So glad we did! Good, clean atmosphere. Our server Nicole was great. We started by trying the Cheeseburger soup. tasted great. Our table ordered burgers, killa chili cheese fries, reuben, French dip and Philly cheese steak sandwiches. also had the daily special of corned beef and cabbage. I said I'd go back when I was next in Slidell and I did- and I'm glad! This past visit was a much better experience and I wanted to share it with my fellow yelpers. I updated the number of stars from the last visit from three to four- and, it is actually a bigger jump that the stars represent. The last visit, truth be told, was more of a two and a half and this one was a four and a half. This visit I had my wife and adult daughter with me so we were able to sample more of a variety- glad we did! The wife had the Irish Channel Gumbo and it was very good. My daughter had the crawfish Po boy and it was also very good. I had the Brisket Burger, and sadly, it was only average. I mean the taste was good, but nothing to write home about or recommend it to anyone. It was just an average burger and since I am a burger nut, I was expecting so much more. The first issue I had was presentation. The burger is served open face and the patty was considerably smaller than the bun- this is a big no-no and a burger faux pas. It is just visually unappealing. I'd rather have a smaller bun so that it looked better. We did have Onion Rings for an appetizer and the kitchen nailed it! They were excellent! You next visit to Southside you have got to try them. Now for the service: the last time I visited the service was excellent; this time, not so much. Our server wasn't rude or bad, she was more ambivalent. My daughter commented after she took our order "what's up with Ms. Personality?" So, the service was a bit slow and not really friendly- we'll live. I chalk it up to everyone has bad days. To summarize: I'm glad I went back and I'm glad that I can change my rating for SC. I'm usually in Slidell for work for two weeks at a time and that equates to about 12 evening meals out. My next trip I will dedicate at least one and probably more to Southside Cafe. read more

This place seems to be a local favorite. We have gone two times. Let's start with what I liked: Food portions are large, appetizers are really good, and the price for portions is great. We also had really nice waiters both times. What I don't like: the main entrees are good but just not great. I wanted it to be good so we could have another place to take people to when they visit, but I just don't love it. It's the combination of ingredients and possibly the quality but something is off. I got the Tuesday special which was spaghetti and meatballs. Huge portion size! Sauce and noodles were great but the meatballs tasted like day old meatloaf rolled into a ball. It was so close to being great but the meatballs ruined it. I got the pork sandwich the next time. Pork was tender, bbq sauce, and coleslaw were good, but they put a cheese on it that over powered the entire sandwich. It's a place worth trying who knows maybe you will love it everyone else seems to but I don't. read more

I had the sirloin for steak night tonight and it was cooked to PERFECTION!!!! My baked potato was loaded, hot & delicious! The atmosphere was GREAT! Sports on Everywhere!!!! Awesome for a chick who likes them!!! My 2 year old daughter loved the salad which she's never had before, lol. We will definitely be back because we are REGULARS. Oh! and the prices are FAIR. Came into town last night for business. When traveling I will try to go out of my way to support local establishments and avoid chains. This place was recommended by a couple of locals and not too far from my hotel. Went there last night for dinner and they had a Ribeye special that I had with a cup of Gumbo. Both were excellent. Today I was with two people from the company I represent and we suggested we try it for lunch. The place was packed though we were seated in less than 10 minutes. I had oyster po boy fully "dressed" and some onion rings "thin ones" that were great with a really good sauce. We were all quite happy with food and service. This is more than just a cafe. It's fun, food selections are numerous and varied, they have a nice drink menu for bar or table service. Food servings are very generous. We discovered this place a few years ago on our trips from TX to FL. Now we look forward to stopping here on every trip. Try the fried catfish platter. Never had any better! read more
