The food was really good, fresh and hot. I tried the Bayou Bird, the horseradish was way to strong for my liking, I had to wipe it off. I did finish the sandwich though! Really good. My husband and I were traveling through Slidell and decided to stop for lunch. We stopped at Southside Cafe and was blown away by our lunch. My boyfriend surprised me by taking me here for lunch to celebrate my birthday! I've been wanting to try this place for a while too. We got the crawfish balls for our appetizer and it was too spicy for my palette so I only ate one but it had a good flavor (I need to get used to the spiciness down here! lol). Got the seafood platter for our main meal which came with 2 soft-shell crabs, oysters, shrimp, hushpuppies, and catfish! I didn't get to try everything because we got full quickly lol but I did enjoy the soft-shell crab! and I will always enjoy the oysters! My boyfriend enjoyed everything as well but mostly the shrimp. We got two sides as well though which was the chicken and sausage gumbo (super yummy!) and the Mac n cheese, which was really squishy and wasnt impressed wont get that again. Well this was amazing. After a long travel day we really wanted somewhere to relax and have a good meal. It was a little loud but the staff was super friendly and gave great recommendations. Today I've come with my 2 sisters to celebrate Barbara 's birthday. The food is consistently great and today was extra special because it was just us three girls. At the end Mike, the manager came and sang a beautiful Happy Birthday to Barbara and brought the most delicious hot chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream and whipping cream. They ate as I texted. Ate here twice while on travel this week. Service was great and the food was incredible. Their French Onion Soup was by far the best I've ever had. The atmosphere is comfortable and relaxing. Incredible. I rarely give 5 stars. We Stopped for dinner on way to Pops crawfish boil in Mississippi. The catfish was excellent, clean, fresh, light breading, spicy. The Irish gumbo (seafood gumbo and chicken gumbo separated with potato salad) was awesome spicy perfect. Will stop here again when coming thru Slidell. Beer selection was good too, love the local beer Andy gator. 8% alc and great taste. Staff did excellent Job also. read more

Southside cafe is good if you are looking for a casual dining atmosphere that also has a bar. It honestly feels more like a bar then a restaurant to me based on the number of people that go there just to hangout at the bar rather then eat. The food and service was great. I had the steak special on Thursday night which is a great deal, you get a 8oz steak, salad, and side for under $20. I normally judge the quality of the steak based on if I need steak sauce or not so I was plesantly surprised that this one was so good! They cooked it perfectly and it was full of flavor. I was surprised to find this place. The atmosphere is very friendly and relaxing. Kind of like the tv show from years ago called "Cheers". Family friendly. The food that I tried was good and plentiful. I tried both the seafood gumbo and the poor mans gumbo (chicken and sausage), neither were above standard. I purchased a shrimp poboy and it was standard quality for NOLA. Better than most outside the gulf region. The seafood muffuletta was not really a muffuletta, it was a seafood sandwich. I just wanted shrimp and basically got a shrimp poboy on a round bun. It would be worth checking out further. But for a tourist, I would look further until someone can determine exactly what the draw is to the business. read more

Ate at Southside many times, great burgers, salads, gumbo. Service is always good. Writing about a family birthday lunch on a Sunday at 1:00PM. We were 10 adults and 2 little kids, and the place was packed. We were seated within 20 minutes. We brought a cake that they placed in kitchen until we were ready. They treated my mother, the birthday lady, wonderfully. We ordered drinks, appetizers, soups, entrees and coffee. Everyone said their food was delicious: chicken melts, muffulettas, gumbo, shrimp po'boy, salmon salad, fried oysters, buffalo shrimp, and hamburgers. They lit candles, brought out cake, and led singing of Happy Birthday. Thanks Southside for making our family birthday celebration so much fun. Overall food, service, and prices are great. We love Southside Café, and recommend a visit if you haven't eaten there yet. read more

Hidden gem. Great service! Everyone was incredibly friendly and was always sure to check on us and ask how we are and chat us up a bit (we are come out of town and just driving by). Delicious food, would recommend to anyone nearby. They have very interesting wall decorations including a lot of war paraphernalia, machine guns, swords, torn flags, etc. I'm guessing that a lot of war veterans live there? But anyway, great place. This is one of the times I really appreciate Yelp and the ability to get immediate directions to a restaurant. My wife and I were traveling from New Orleans to our home in Mobile near Slidell when we searched for a place for lunch. The highly rated Southside Cafe popped up. It looked like a great choice with the deep menu of great southern dishes and local seafood. Jackpot! We came into a crowded parking lot and ended up sitting at the bar. Ashley took care of us - great job!! My wife ordered the French Dip (shared an extra order of fries - so good) and I had the Irish Channel - chicken & sausage gumbo and seafood gumbo separated by a homemade potato salad. Everything was outstanding! Perfectly cooked with all the individual flavors showing through. Fantastic patriotic atmosphere with an extremely friendly clientele. I've been many times and for some reason we always end up ordering the fried Calamari to start. Habit, or tradition, but it's always good and I always end up saying "no more fried food" but I can't help myself at Southside Cafe. Then because I order a fried appetizer I end up ordering a salad. But the salads are really very good, I love the Grilled Tuna salad. My husband orders the Reuben every time. It's the only place we have found with really good corned beef. There's always a good crowd here and it seems the staff all love their jobs since they are mostly all smiling faces! read more

Bonfuca French Dip was not ribeye meat but roast beef. It was a great sandwich but as a profesional chef you cannot fool me and tell me it's ribeye steak and serve me your shredded roast beef. Stuffed mushrooms were not what I'm accustomed to as it was mostly filler and not a lot of crab?? What happened? Did the recipe change? I have had the stuffed mushrooms at least 17 times and have always been amazing, mind blowing and set the bar high as to what to expect from other places. Tonight? Not so much. Slow Saturday night. LSU smashed Southern Miss by 50 something points. Do not tell me I'm eating shredded ribeye and serve me roast beef. The sandwich was still awesome. The aujus was hot and had notes of red wine. The poboy bread was spot on. The Mac n cheese was just ok but lacked salt. Which we added no problem. Service was amazing. Young lady was attentive and concerned. Performed at a high level. Gumbo came before the appetizers though which we ordered about 10 minutes before entrees. The food was cooked perfectly but not exactly a steak. Bathrooms had no soap to wash my hands in the men's bathroom and toilet had pee all over it. Floors had nasty paper towels all over them. The pros: food was good but not overwhelming per the usual. The service was great. The stuffed mushrooms were still good even though we mostly got filler and little crab. Several crab shell bits that came down a bit rough. Service was great. The cons: food wasn't exceptional like usual. Mushrooms weren't perfectly cooked. The bathrooms were dirty. Saturday steak night is too expensive for a 12oz steak and potato. We can go to Texas Roadhouse for way less and way more. And most importantly as a chef that can see your common kitchen areas; the freakin floors were filthy and from where I was sitting you could see that the floors were trashed and nasty wrappers and and packaging were kicked under fryers and grill. Tell the day shift to stop being lazy and do their god dang side work and sweep n mop. Night shift has to even in the middle of a massive surge keep the place neat, clean and orderly..You have to pull a line sweep. You have to pull trash. But a select few of your kitchen employees were screwing around after the dinner rush at 9:00pm. Leaning on to go counter talking to their friends while a few good cooks kept grinding tickets and cleaning. I'm confused by Louisiana's work ethic for the most part. Should call it the Big Lazy instead of the Big Easy. Lazy employees are driving up your labor cost and inconsistent food preparation. Line sweep. If you got time to lean you got time to clean. They are paid by the hour and need to step it up. Middlendorfs just opened up and there are plenty of places serving great food with plenty of choices. I choose you forever but tonight seeing the place filthy and uncared for made me sick. I had to straighten out the pictures on the wall of marines who had lost their lives and were knocked around as if they didn't matter. They matter and that's why you put them on your wall. Do the marines a favor and put two screws on the pictures so they don't get disrespected or tossed around. The gardening around the building is slipping. Used to be well groomed and the high standard of your company. Now my handicapped wife can't even walk down the side of the building. Come on! Please fix this. Someone please hear me and what advice I'm giving. But do not ever give me debri and tell me it's shredded ribeye. The line cook took a short cut while his lazy coworkers leaned on the counter talking crap to their friends who apparently worked there. The guy they were hanging out with was in his pajamas but walked on the line, in the service station, behind bar. What in the heck happened to this place? Was not even close to the same just a few weeks ago. This is how yelp elite write! I'm not sorry. I'm upset that things were good but very bad. Lastly; no freakin hand soap in the men's restroom.
