    Tuna melt sandwich
    Vaughn F.

First visit to Southside Coffee was a delicious treat. No, I did not actually order any coffee, just a couple sandwiches to share with my girlfriend. We parked down the block and made our way into the restaurant. First, the tuna melt. OMG. Served on a couple slices of toasted rye bread, this tuna melt is the best of its kind that I've had in recent memory. The tuna salad is so good. I'm picky af when it comes to tuna melts, and this one absolutely did the trick. Next, the new school breakfast sandwich: scrambled eggs, bacon, kale, hot sauce, on a sesame seed roll. Tasted absolutely delicious. Pretty big portion, too. So excited to add this to my regular rotation. I highly recommend making a visit, either for a bite to eat or some coffee to sip. Mmm. So damn good.

    New School breakfast sandwich.

People have left some odd reviews of this place, including a one-star review for the restaurant…read moreapparently being highly politicized--a vibe I neither felt nor could visually identify within or without the establishment. I ordered a single burger and a Sudan spiced peanut butter latte, for ~$15! That's pretty inexpensive for New York City. I note this as some consider it overpriced. I suppose the food is fairly inexpensive, the lattes slightly higher than average. The "burger" comes wrapped in a homemade pita with diced cucumber, onion, and tomato, plus a few crispy, thick-cut fries and a yummy house sauce. It was a cool twist of the traditional burger and had a nice flavor. The sauce was like a slightly Mediterranean version of Big Mac sauce. The girl working as the barista and cashier was very nice and friendly. She had a nice presence and warm smile, made suggestions, and even gave a stranger free utensils when they popped on to ask. I think it's definitely worth checking out, and it's a good place for a cheap & simple meal that's still quirky and fun.

I have wanted to try this spot for some time, and wound up a bit disappointed with what I tried…read more They feature a tahini cold brew, which features two things I love dearly, but instead of a rich cold brew it was overly sweet and icy--more like a slushie. Perhaps I should have anticipated that, or my mistake in ordering. I also ordered a Moroccan egg salad sandwich which was substantive but surprisingly bland--sparse with the advertised capers and pickled red onions to give it more punch. I've always loved the look of the spot and the vibe--funky decor, outside and indoor facing counters to order, with some outdoor seating for people watching on Dekalb or heading nearby Ft. Greene Park. I see they are renovating and rebranding a bit and adding some burger component. While I didn't love it, I'd definitely give it another shot.
