If you weren't born and raised in the area, you eventually reached a point where you grew tired of the Scranton cycle of massive hype followed by mediocre food. South Side Seafood is one purveyor worthy of being lauded. Not only is the fresh selection very good and inexpensive, but there is also a massive selection of frozen products that can turn a plain dinner into a fine dining experience. Langoustines, delicious pastas, soups, lobster, calamari, and so on. The prices are so low that, last weekend, we ended up analyzing the receipt figuring that they had made a mistake (they hadn't). The only knock on this place compared to big city purveyors is that the fresh selection is "safe," meaning they only sell fish that sell good volume, and don't wade into whole fish, west coast oysters, or more exotic oily fishes. They sell what sells (usually like, 8, varieties of fresh fish) and, believe me, it sells. read more

Plus: they're close by, they're meticulously clean, sterile even and give good customer service. But; they don't offer anything not found in other stores. And things that are at a reduced price are inferior in some way. For instance a dozen clams beautifully cleaned, may not be the freshest and you'll get clams ranging from medium to quarter sized. The best, cleanest clams anywhere. The only place I will buy them. Their prices beat every supermarket even discount versions. I have never bought anything there that wasn't excellent. Great selection of prepared premium items like escargot,etc. Many local restaurants purchase their seafood from here. Absolutely worth the trip because it's a drive for me. read more

Amazing selection and quality. We have never been disappointed. Extremely fresh fish and the place is spotless clean. Wegmans used to be our go to for fish and seafood but since discovering Southside, no more Wegs for us for seafood. I have never seen fresh walleye anywhere around here but they have had it every time we've gone. And their Nova stlyle salmon and lobster bisque is fantastic. I moved to Bethlehem Pennsylvania from Scranton 3 years ago. I get fish down there when I have to, but the quality is never as good, neither are the prices. The best fish down there is probably at Wegmans. The quality is decent, but it's at least 25% more. Often even greater difference. This is still the best fish you will get anywhere, other than Boston or Philly. But that's probably because they bring their fish in on a regular basis from Boston. And the prices are great because they are primarily wholesale. But people in the area look out at their retail store. Their Faroe Island salmon is the best salmon I've had anywhere! And the people there are really nice and very helpful. It's worth the hour and a quarter Drive periodically to stock up my freezer. read more

Our family still does the Italian Christmas Eve Vigil. We have tried many other places- even out of town. This is absolutely THE best for freshness, quality and price. The service is great, every one is pleasant and knowledgeable. The store is immaculately clean without that "old fish" smell. They even give cooking tips and recipes. I won't buy anywhere else. Went for the first time today. A little hard to find, but well worth it as there are no decent places to find fish here. AMAZING selections, too many to list. Prices are more than reasonable. Can't wait to go back and try their pasta, soups and more fish and clams! read more

Southside Seafood is the only place when I have Guests that I purchase My seafood. They truly have the freshest and mostly everything in stock at all times. I get My lobster and shrimp there.
