There are only a few restaurants left here. Most are overpriced. The pay lot is expensive and many of the parking ticket machines don't work. The good news is that it's clean and has some nice views of the city. read more

We came here after our ride on the Gateway Clipper and I expected a busier Saturday evening during the Pirates game. We parked here and walked around to find dinner after our sight seeing. I like how central the location was to all the things we came to do. The fountains dancing to the music was fun and I'm glad the security guard pointed it out to us or I would have never known they were there. Station Square is listed as a "shopping center," but it currently does NOT contain many stores. Instead, it contains mostly restaurants, recreational activities, business offices, a hotel, and a garage. Station Square got its name from the 1870s, when the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad had a station here. By the 1970s, however, people no longer frequently rode railroads, so the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation developed this land into a mixed-use center. Today, many of the original buildings have been replaced. I do know that the historic Landmarks Building remains. The area also contains other historic features from Pittsburgh's past, such as the Clinton Furnace, the first blast furnace for making pig iron. As of January 2024, restaurants include Texas de Brazil, the Melting Pot, Joe's Crab Shack, Kiki Japanese, Terrene, Grand Concourse, Gandy Dancer Saloon, Tupelo Honey Southern Kitchen, Homerun Harry's, Buca di Beppo Italian, Hard Rock Cafe, Yinz Coffee, etc. Recreational activities include the Gateway Clipper, Duquesne Incline, Monongahela Incline, Segway Pittsburgh, FA Climbing, Highmark stadium and Riverhounds soccer team, Mike's Horse and Carriage Rides, Adam Solar Rides, boat charters, a park, the fountain at Bessemer Court, etc. Please note that many of these activities are seasonal. One brick office building requires identification to enter, and it contains private businesses for life insurance, transportation, counseling, taxes, software, advertising, security, pharmaceuticals, etc. Years ago, this building contained stores, but it *no* longer is a mall. For about 25 years, I have occasionally visited Station Square. The area has experienced many changes over the years. When my husband and I were teenagers, we met for the first time on the Gateway Clipper! Several years ago, we enjoyed riding the two inclines up and down the hillside and eating at some of the restaurants. Prices can be on the higher end but it is the price to pay for being downtown. All wait staff I've encountered have been friendly and accommodating service. A big tourist destination. It's worth taking a ride up the mountain on the Pittsburgh Incline and view the city from above on Mount Washington. Breathtaking! This used to be the place to go in Pittsburgh for nightlife and dining. Now, it's still a place to go but it seems like the nightlife leaves a little early during the week. The mall seems like you're walking through something that's been closed for a while. There are a few restaurants around that still do pretty well. I think there may have been one or two bars that were open later during the week. Sad to see but still a decent dining destination and there are some beautiful views of the city from here. read more

I think this is a decent place to hang out because it has river views, skyline views, dancing waters, trains and some places to eat. I just wish it was a little more vibrant and active. Sometimes it feels like a bit of a ghost town. Additionally, even though it is fairly clean, it just seems a little run down. There are always some closed businesses that make the place look like it's on its last legs. There are some major renovations taking place at the older building across the street from the dancing waters, Joe's Crab, etc. Hopefully that will draw more people here. As it is, I will still continue to come here because I like the views of the city. I've eaten at most of the restaurants around here and they are fine. It's easy to get to from downtown either walking or even taking the train. With a little polish, this place could be a jem! read more

I'm a bit cautious about posting a review because it was almost 25° out when we visited in the evening here. Personally this was my first visit ever however my spouse has grown up in Pittsburgh. As such she has been here but countless times. It's during pandemic and lots of people are taking this seriously and masking up, No doubt behaving in a manner that shuts everything down quite a bit. I'm not debating whether it's correct to be serious or not. Just that the conditions were not natural for evaluating beyond a certain point. I can comment that when my spouse and daughter approached a public restroom... They found it locked. Over an intercom speaker and security guard surprise them by explaining how to get in with the security code. Afterwards my spouse walked over to the security station and had a short conversation with thanks to the guard. It's nice to know that somebody was watching probably several cameras to ensure everything was okay. It's affirmative when you witness something confirming the case for safety in the mid evening during pandemic. So it's easy to interpret the basic core value for this place. You've got several known and established dining venues. I walked into the Sheraton hotel to make use of their restroom... It seems nice enough and if it were busy and slightly better kept Id count it as first rate. On the merits of location and waterfront views alone it would be no less than four stars is Parking looked ample... And the waterfront views off the boardwalk were classic first rate experiences. So why four stars and not five or three. In my estimation five stars goes to a visiting experience that is almost second to none. Three stars would be a place that's okay to visit but not necessarily hitting on all cylinders so to speak. Here it's a solid four stars. read more

Sadly, you have need to come here unless you have a specific reason to be here, or you like looking at abandon shops inside of a small mall. There are a handful of stores inside and a school- you know your mall is failing when it becomes a church or a school. There are a few bars, but nothing major. Again, I feel like only people staying at the hotel next to it would visit here only because it's so close. Now there are a few other restaurants outside of the mall like The Hard Rock Cafe and Texas De Brazil, but nothing really catches your eye as a place you really want to stop at. The Ducky Tour begins and ends there so there is that. What's sad is the area itself is kind of nice. They installed that beautiful fountain that plays to music, like the Belliago in Vegas, but with much less flare. It's upsetting because this could be an amazing place, but it just isn't. You don't need to come here if you're visiting, spend your time at more interesting places because there are a ton in the city. read more

We didn't go into Station Square, but the views while walking across the bridge over the Monongahela River were great. The square is an indoor and outdoor shopping and entertainment complex that looks like it's mainly for tourist. There are lots of attractions, shops, and chain restaurants; like Buca di Beppo, Hard Rock Cafe, and Joe's Crab Shack. It looked like an alright spot to check out for shopping or to grab a quick bite if you're not looking for local cuisine. read more

If you're headed up the Monongahela Incline or are taking a tour of PGH, chances are you'll end up at Station Square. As the name suggests, this property used to serve as the main terminal for the Wheeling and Lake Erie Railroad in PGH. At present, it serves as the jumping off point for sightseeing excursions in PGH, basically serving a captive audience of tourists. Some of the buildings have been repurposed, including the terminal itself, which is now the Grand Concourse restaurant, and the freight house, which is now a mall of sorts. Many of the buildings on the property were constructed more recently. The majority of what you'll find here are chain restaurants and bars that you can find anywhere else in the country running the gamut from middling to pricey. Of those restaurants, I've been to Buca di Beppo (twice), Bar Louie, and Houlihan's, and have been unimpressed with all of them. More upscale choices include the Grand Concourse, Texas de Brazil (a churrascaria), and the Melting Pot. While I haven't been to any of them and wouldn't necessarily be opposed to trying them, there are many other eateries with more local flair on East Carson St. just a few blocks away. As for the mall itself, as others have mentioned, there are very few stores in it, and nothing particularly special or outstanding. My advice would be to skip it unless it's raining or snowing outside--you won't be missing anything. The night clubs that others have mentioned have been demolished since last year--it's my understanding that the company that owns Station Square is planning to construct residential properties to replace them. Since there's nowhere else to park in the vicinity, it's worth noting that you'll pay to park on the property. The only other alternative within reasonable walking distance is a parking lot located across Carson St., which isn't much cheaper. The only interesting aspects of Station Square are the musical fountains, the view of downtown, and the trains that pass by on the adjoining tracks (at least, if you're a foamer like me!). Otherwise, you can give it a pass--you won't be missing much. 2.5 stars. read more

I have to concur with a lot of the past reviews. This place is a tourist trap, but unlike most people I find that to be what made this place unique in Pittsburgh. Every city has one, so why should Pittsburgh be any different? You can surely spend a day or more down here if you were to do everything there is to offer. Every possible way of touring the city is available here, from the Just Ducky tour to Segway. It's a good place to come and just pass the day, you can sit in the common area and watch the city across the river go about its business for the day. There are downsides to this place and the one obvious thing here is the parking. No matter what, if you drive here, you will have to pay to park. Unless you depend on public transportation, there is no way around that. Once you get the parking situation out of the way you can go about your business. Restaurants are diversified down here, a majority of cuisines are covered. Dine where you please and take your time eating your meal. There is a "mall" here, but it's nothing more than remnants of once was. That part of the complex is called The Freight Shops. There are a few shops here that are basically mom and pop spots with a business school mixed in. What should be noted is that once where the nightclub complex was is no longer. That building no longer stands as the rumors say that they are putting up a residential complex. Also gone is the amphitheater, now there is a soccer stadium that houses the Pittsburgh Riverhounds. As I said before, this place is a great way to waste a day here. It's not meant to be a place to go every single day, it is meant to be a place to gather with people. Texas de Brazil was the restaurant my group ended up going to but there were options for everyone as far as cuisines. There was also a casino although I didn't see it. This is only a destination because of the prime restaurants that bring me downtown. The fountain show is neat to see at night, but other than that there isn't much to walk around a see while you're waiting for your dinner reservation. The indoor shops are very pieced together and not as trendy and interesting as they could be for the venue. Beware the open parking lot. The best thing I can find in me to say about them is that they are blatantly indifferent crooks. I've never been more insulted in my life and will never park in that lot again. The short story: as I was looking at the total due on-screen, the attendant was telling me a higher price. Self-tipping, theft, call it what you will - it's wrong. Last weekend I was meeting a friend at Station Square and had some time to kill so I walked around outside a bit and then I went inside. I haven't been down in the station square shops in quite some time. For a while it seemed like there was hardly any store left - Bradford School is there now and no Sesame Inn either (which I loved). Walking around inside I was surprised how many shops "were" there and all that is offered "inside". Pittsburgh Wine Cellars to Hometown Sports so many great shops. I love that there is plenty of benches for seating as well as beverage vending machines docked at several locations inside. There are candy/gum ball machines too which are fun. It's always a fun visit to Station Square. read more

Station Square has gone way down in popularity since its opening back in the early 80's. Gone are the many quaint shops that made the square so popular. Much of the room inside the mall now is taken up by the Bradford school. Many of the popular restaurants have been replaced by chain nightclubs and food court style eateries. I do not come here as often since most of this area has gone downhill. One of the things that turns me off is having to pay for parking. there is a parking garage but across Carson St you can park for less. However, there are still a few perks here. For families who love to take the "Just ducky tours" then this is the place you go to board. Nearby is the Gateway clipper fleet so you can grab a riverboat and tour the city. Most of the stores I knew are gone. There seem to be just as many Steeler stores here as I would find over at Heinz field. The good side however is that you are near the T station and the fare to the city is minimal. You can also board the incline for a view of Mt Washington. If you are really in the walking mood then you can walk across the Smithfield St bridge to town. As far as restaurants go only a few old standbys remain-Houlihan's, Grand Concourse, the Gandy dancer, and the Hard Rock Cafe. Very popular is Texas d' Brazil. I have yet to try this place but heard it was very good and very expensive. So what turned me off so much about Station Square? Well, it was pretty much a montage of chain restaurants that you can find in any given city - ya know, the Hard Rock Cafe scene. I'm typically looking for the nitty gritty joints that I can only find *here*. The lift up to Mount Washington was the highlight - and very budget-friendly I might add. Aside from driving past Heinz Field four times due to a driver that refused to ask for directions, visiting Station Square was one of my first experiences in Pittsburgh. It is also where my husband and I shared our first kiss and where we got engaged. So it will always hold a special place in my heart. First, I love that a historic building was saved and reused instead of torn down. In the freight house section, the building has a lot of character. However, when you wander into the other section of shops, it becomes tunnel like as you make the transition and just changes the overall feel of the place. There is a nice variety of shops and restaurants. It is an add assortment of stores and of course, has at least three sport related places. There is also a soap shop, smoke house, Ireland inspired, gift shop and books. Just an odd combination, but it must work. The Sideline Sport store has anything and everything Steelers or Penguins that you can possibly imagine, so if you are on the hunt for a unique sports item, this may be a good bet for you. There is also a small nail salon and an Asian massage place. I'm not sure how they survive because they don't seem to fit in with everything else. Most of the restaurants are chains, but both the Japanese and Chinese restaurants inside are tasty. It also has the Melting Pot which I love. The best part of Station Square is Bessemer Court. There is a "dancing" fountain with a variety of "shows" where the water dances to the music. There is a wide variety of music styles which keeps it entertaining. It also provides great views of the downtown skyline and access to the docks. I have not been to any of the night clubs, but I know come nightfall, the character changes from tourist trap to limo and buses full of bachelorette and bachelor parties along with 21st birthdays. Things I will happily stay away from. It is worth a visit for the view and for an afternoon or night out. read more

This is an area of restaurants, hotels and shops located next to the Monongahela River at the foot of the Monongahela Incline. There is a large pay parking lot next to it that you can use to park to ride the incline. There is an indoor shopping area that looked semi deserted with an array is small shops and no name food places. This nice area is obviously designed with the tourist in mind. Neat things to see, medium to expensive eateries, a cool fountain that sprays to the music and duck and paddle boat tours. The best tour is the paddle boats. They take you farther and in more comfort than the Duck tour and is more enjoyable. The mall area is rather boring with shops most people wouldn't be interested in. Joe Crab Shack is the most reasonable of the food spots (we go every year during our visit). The Brazilian restaurant is nice but expensive unless you have a huge appetite to get your monies worth. I am so saddened by what Station Square has become. It is a tourist trap as other reviewers have said but what is sad is there aren't many stores left. This place used to be hoppin'. The funny bone, Chauncey's, places to eat, the book store, the toy store, the Irish store and across the way was Woodson's and then Philthy's and matrix.... Now all that remains is the book store, sports store, a Pittsburgh store, and a little wine store. It it so quiet in there, so sad!!!! Yes, there are the dancing fountains and Hard Rock Cafe but it is so sad! The only reason to go would be for the grand concourse, thankfully they are awesome and keeping Station Square somewhat alive. read more

What a nice little area to walk around. They have Boca Italian restaurant, Houlihans, Joes crab shack, Brazilian steakhouse, hard rock cafe, melting pot and several others in this little spot all close together. Duck tours is here as we seen them board up. Paddle boat also, can't remember the name of it. They have an old caboose that was back in 1904...really neat to see. Yeah, I've been here a number of times over the years, including tonight, and it's essentially a glorified strip mall with some good places to eat, a concert venue, and not much else to get excited about unless you like bars and clubs. For me it's always been a place to kill time while waiting for the shuttle bus to take me to a show at the Pavilion in Burgettstown. Never would I come down here just to hang out. I am continually astonished at how busy Station Square always seems to be, even on a Monday afternoon?!? Wanna feel awkward? Try waiting here for a ride at night after you've been to a show at the Amphitheater or just got off the Pavilion shuttle bus. You're hot, sticky, beat-up, and fatuous, overdressed people walk by you with noses in the air, positively marinated in perfume and cologne. That's how you know that you've left the underworld and have returned to Middle-of-the-Road-gard. All you're wondering about is where that damn cab is so you can go home and shower, trying not to make eye contact with male lounge hustlers and their grifter female counterparts. The parking is a mess afire! If you drive down here, you have my sympathies. I swear I come close to getting hit by a car each time I'm here. They call it "A 52 Acre Playground of Historical Proportions." Heh. It's more like a 52 Acre Waste of Space and Potential. Oh and as Sal G. says, it is hard to find your way around. The first thing we needed to do when we came here was use the restrooms, and we had a helluva time finding them. There's no one around to ask either. Christ, even the suburban malls have security guards about. Then all we wanted was a sweet treat of some kind. It took us ten minutes to find Carol's Confection's. In a word: Overrated. read more

I wasn't too impressed with Station Square. It's a lot smaller than I anticipated. Spent a couple hours here to kill time before my dinner reservation - $4 for 2 hours in one of their parking lots. I knew this was a tourist spot and growing up in the city by the bay on the west coast I should have known better than to hype up a tourist spot! As an out-of-towner I was hoping to find a lot more to do at Station Square than chain restaurants and some random stores. The view is quite pretty but I preferred the view from the Incline! I sat on one of the benches and enjoyed their little water fountain shows. They water correlates with the music playing. They're particularly fun songs such as "Be My Guest" from Beauty and the Beast and "Celebration" by Madonna. The kids love splashing around the fountain and dancing to the music! That was adorable. Think a mini replica of Las Vegas' Bellagio water fountain show - same concept. They have the Grand Concourse here though! Which I've read is a renovated train station and is now a classy restaurant. I heard their Sunday Brunch was fantastic so I made reservations on opentable.com. Unfortunately my sunday brunch plans fell through and I didn't get to try the food and ambiance of the Grand Concourse. I do intend on eventually check it out though! I'll be back someday. read more

The tourist section of Pittsburgh. This is where everyone who lives in the burbs come for a night out in the city. It is full of chain restaurants bars, and clubs. There is a great view of Downtown however from there as well as a free dancing music fountain that is kinda cool. While there is not much that is original here, if you are in the mood for a chain restaurant, there are some decent ones here. This would not be my number one place to go in the city, but it's not terrible either. read more

I'm downrating Station Square a little bit here. It's always been a bit touristy but it's gotten more so over the years. Sure there were some chains in there . I remember the old Roy Rogers and Houlihan's has been a fixture here for many years. I remember when Bessemer Court was wide open and a pleasant place to spend an afternoon. Now it's all overbuilt with franchised places like Buca di Beppo, Bar Louie, Hard Rock Cafe, Joe's Crab Shack, etc. You know, except for Buca Di Beppo, I've never eaten at any of these! Honestly, what's here that you can't get anyplace else? I remember these antique railcars they had there that were converted into stores. One sold jewelry, another sold glassware. Oh but the one I remember the most sold Pittsburgh themed antiques. I mean the place was a real museum of kitsch! Seriously, if you were looking for Iron City Beer commemorative Steeler's cans from the 70s, they had them. If you wanted Duquesne Incline salt shakers, they had them. My husband Rick also remembers the old days as well. He remembers a hotdog place in the Freight House Shops that not only had great dogs, but also a ton of microbrews from all over Pennsylvania. He remembers Heinz Healy's and a store that sold sportswear with the Jeep, Saab, Porsche, etc logos. He also remembers sitting on the platform outside Bessemer Court, watching and photographing the freight trains rolling past. But they still have the Grand Concourse Restaurant and Gandy Dancer Saloon, Sesame Inn, Kiku, and a few other local places, so I'll still give 'em four stars. read more
