Going to college was really important to me - especially going to the right college. Call it a childhood dream if you will, but all through grade school that was definitely my end goal. Enter senior year in high school. I was all ready to settle for nearby and cheap UNT for lack of a better institution, when I run into two SU professors at a high school theatre convention. They were telling me about their theatre program (my intended major at the time) and how they thought I would be a good fit. I was also impressed with everything they told me about the university in general. I returned to my school the following week only to find out that many of my teachers were alumni! I applied and was originally waitlisted for admittance to the school. My correspondence with my admittance counselor was always active, engaging, and informative. There was such a good relationship that my counselor actually called me at school to let me know when the first opening came available and - viola! - I was a Southwestern student. Overall I am very satisfied with the four years I had at SU. The campus is a quaint size and very, very beautiful. As the first institution of higher learning in Texas, there is a lot of historical depth and beauty to be taken advantage of here. There are about 1,300 students here, small enough to feel homey but definitely large enough to make a lot of friends and meet plenty of new people all the time. Campus life is full of variety and very engaging. There are plenty of wonderful opportunities to stay active and to get involved, from Greek life to service clubs to just going rock climbing with a bunch of students one weekend. The university does an amazing job of providing social and intellectual events to keep everyone stimulated. The housing is spot on. I was terrified about going to college and having to deal with community showers. Unless you're a freshman guy there's no real worry about that. Even though some of the dorms are 70 years old, they are in wonderful condition and boast great amenities. Most of the residents life is hands on as well. The curriculum of the school is very engaging. This definitely isn't the school for someone looking to skip class all the time and just coast through and party. The potential for learning and growing is phenomenal. The faculty is very bright, creative, and truly interested in your education. If you put in 100%, then so will they. And as a liberal arts school, the curriculum is designed to allow you to dabble in other interests and experience ideas and areas of study you normally wouldn't be exposed to. That's how I ended up double majoring in two different studies I never thought I would as a freshman. Georgetown itself is also a nice quiet town to be in, but not so small that it doesn't offer the necessary outlets for college life - such as a rich and active downtown, shopping, movie theatre, and, well, liquor stores. There's also an IKEA just down the interstate for cheap student living, and Austin and it's night life is just 20 minutes away. I would recommend that any future college student keep Southwestern in mind. It might seem small and expensive, but over 85% of students receive some sort of financial aid, and there are even full scholarships to be had from the University itself. It's definitely not the place for everyone, but it's definitely worth a tour. Once can't be too thorough when picking their college, after all. As far as shortcomings are concerned, they are similar to any other smaller liberal arts school. The athletics program isn't large and in a higher divisions (they just now announced the formation of a football team), nor are there any athletic scholarships available at the time of this review. Some amenities like fast food chains on campus are lacking, and like any other small, tight-knit school, rumors news and drama can travel lightning fast and even spark ferocious outcomes. But of course, all of this falls in with what type of college is right for you, etc. In the end that's a decision that you can only make for yourself.

Those scanning your CV may mistake you for a Georgetown grad, so that's a plus.

After being accepted to the Texas State nurse practitioner program, I received communications from the university and the graduate studies department. Email instructions which appeared to contradict each other, or mislead the receiver somewhat, and made the university seem disorganized. Wanting to be conscientious, I sent a respectful email to DOCTOR Smith, asking politely for clarification. Her response was ridiculously arrogant and made it very clear that she was irritated by the email I had sent her for clarification. There was no explanation or apology for the different messages that I received from the university vs the graduate nursing department, and she made a point of stressing that students must refer to her as DOCTOR Smith. I have no problem with that, of course, since I'm sure she worked hard for her doctorate. Her rudeness, arrogance and obviously impatient attitude was a dealbreaker for me, the last straw after the other aggravating issues with Texas State University. I immediately decided to attend a different school, because DOCTOR Smith's behavior made it seem like a very bad idea to deal with this school for an entire 15 months! I'm happily attending grad school elsewhere, even though it is more expensive and the program is longer.

I've never felt unsafe on campus, this is by far nicest looking campus; Other then Leander campus (which is to far). I'd highly recommend anyone starting college to come here I've had zero issues. I have had teachers that help me so much, I mean they go above and beyond to help you understand what they are teaching, they care. I dropped out of highschool 4 times and had to get my ged. This school has made the transition back to schooling completely easy and fun. As a normal student who has average grades and a average life this place is A1+ some. They then have the texas state campus nextdoor. I mean they for real made going to college alot easier. I couldn't thank the staff enough and the teachers! :)

I cannot recommend anyone wise enough to actually check Google reviews, to attend this school. The individuals called teachers during this current semester have belittled and berated students asking for help, or to simply be taught anything. Handing a book to someone and telling someone to use the Internet is not teaching and is a prime example why AI has even started to replace the need for schools like this. If you are a member of this school, please do not contact me. You have the time and resources available to you, to do better. If you want a positive review in place of this one, then make improvements for your current students, not some later class of students who won't even know improvements were made and why. If you know someone considering the Hutto campus, make sure that you get all expected expenses in writing before you start. Being told that your classroom computers cannot support the software (MasterCam) and in your second year be told your now 2 year old MacBook can't support it either, is more than disappointing. If you complain about the teachers in any way, you need to be prepared for retaliation and time being wasted by staff who use class time to ask questions, but not have the ability to provide solutions and also be told how they will consider proposed solutions for future classes, but your current class is just expected to deal with the school's growing pains while they better equip themselves over time. If you don't want to teach, quit talking up the title of being a teacher or make an effort to actually care. If this current semester does not witness immediate and obvious improvements, I will be speaking with the board at Texas State, as well as the companies that take in graduating students.

This…read morecollege runs on scamming people, bullying, and all the things that make people the absolute WORST. First, admissions forgot to inform me that they would charge an extra $3500 for out of district tuition, so that charge blindsided me a week into classes. After waiting a week to get a hold of a financial aid person, they told me they wouldn't help me and to try my advisor. They shoved me off so fast, and didn't even ask me what the problem was. SO RUDE. I couldn't get a hold of my student advisor the entire semester. When I finally received an email back from Ara Williams, it was AI generated, and didn't answer my actual concerns because he was "too busy" with other students who had "actual problems". You will spent most of you time trying to find the right person to email, because most of the staff will just shove you off to someone else or telling you to just be grateful for the breadcrumbs of information or help they offer. On top of that, they hire "professors" like Cassie Smith for Anthropology who are NOT qualified to teach the subject, but will also hire department chairs like Dr. Sanchez to protect these "professors" even when they lack the basic knowledge to teach. Both of these staff members accused me of cheating without any sort of proof, but tried to tell me I should be "grateful" they gave me a grade that I earned. This was after I had to email the professor every SINGLE week to open the appropriate information and assignments. Yes, I had to remind my professor to unlock the weekly assignments with an email that she didn't respond to for two days prior. She was probably busy trying to make her lecture videos that didn't post until halfway through the week. It's sad that all this time she spent "preparing" for her class she couldn't run a spell check before posting anything, including feedback on papers. Cassie Smith is unprofessional and should never teach again. Dr. Sanchez should never be allowed to interact with students again. Telling a student who did not cheat to "be grateful the professor was willing to change the grade" is INSANE and shows how selfish this college is. They will do WHATEVER it takes to protect their own, even if it means lying about a student's academic dishonesty. This ENTIRE college runs on manipulation, scams, and lies. DO NOT waste your money here because they do not care about you. I have hired a lawyer to pursue legal action because of this semester with Austin Community College.
