Until recently I've always ordered their awesome gluten-free pizza when visiting Mathews. My wife and I ordered a different entree last month (just moved here and ate there a few nights in a row). The mashed potatoes were so runny that they ran in to the other items on the plate. The waitress said that the cook used to much milk (why didn't (s)he remake it?). So, we ordered potato salad - which was partially frozen. There was no offer for a reduced price from the waitress or the owner (who we told the next day). The lesson here for me is to only get the pizza - which is really good - and not chance the other higher-end entrees. A great time to go there is on Thursday nights when they have open mike music. We went here as we rented a River house and a friend recommended this spot to us. This restaurant was in downtown Mathews and had a very nice small town vibe. We had a party of 10 with six adults and four kids and they were able to seat us outside with a reservation. We ordered the crab dip appetizer and two rounds of the bang bang shrimp appetizer. The adults all enjoyed both of these and they were gobbled up in short order. One of the kids even enjoyed the crab dip. We ordered a large cheese pizza for the kids and a large speciality pizza with pepperoni, sausage, green peppers, onions and mushrooms for four of the adults. There was no Coke Zero or Diet Dr. Pepper but they had Diet Coke which I did order because I wanted a soda with my pizza even though I prefer the other two mentioned. The kids ate up the cheese pizza and the speciality pizza was good but it did not leave me wanting to come back for more. The leftover speciality pizza was very good the next day after being heated up in the microwave. My five year old son and nine year old daughter enjoyed the lemonade especially since they are fans of the Simply brand. My father-in-law got the fried flounder and fries. The breading did not stick to the flounder and we thought it was on the slightly heavy side. My mother-in-law got the steak, asparagus and rice. She cut it in half to share and we thought it was only ok. If we are ever in the area again and want pizza, we might go back or maybe just order the pizza to go. These guys make some of the best pizza I've ever had. The restaurant is run by a really nice couple, I think their names are Ned and Dia. I normally don't advocate hanging out at a business until they close but many times that my friends and I go here we unintentionally do just that. Ned and Dia are just so nice, fun and accommodating that you feel like family. It's to the point that when they clean up I feel like I should help move the chairs and I've only been here a handful of times! They make their own pizza and the little rolls that some of the sandwiches come on. The specials are always really inventive. I can't think of anything I've ever had here that I didn't like or thought mediocre. The pizza dough is just a tad sweet and that really makes it for some reason. The pizzas are also named after islands around Virginia and that's really cute. Reasonable prices, desserts are handmade locally by a friend of theirs (SO TASTY), great beer and wine selection. Beers on tap and in bottles and some local foods and tkotches on sale in the restaurant. You can order take-out. They sometimes keep odd hours so I'd call ahead just to make sure but definitely go if you're able. read more

My wife and I are staying in the area for a few days, and had dinner here on a Thursday night. It has a great country, small-town cafe feel, and the service was great and very friendly. My wife and I each had a side salad, which used fresh romaine lettuce rather than boring iceberg lettuce. We were quite pleased with the homemade dressings: she had their buttermilk parmesan and I had the balsamic vinagrette. Both dressings are fantastic! My wife had a special: scallops wrapped in prosciutto with some parmesan on top, with a side of homemade mashed potatoes. Excellent food, but the scallops could have done without the parmesan; the ham and cheese are both on the saltier side, and together they make the scallops a little too salty. I had the Parrot Island pizza: bbq chix with gouda, fresh garlic, and onions. It was delicious, but it could have used less gouda cheese I think. We took our dessert to go, a slice of chocolate cake and a slice of carrot cake. Both are fantastic! Very tasty, and exactly what you think a homemade cake should be. Overall, this place has solid food and great service. It has an appropriately unsophisticated atmosphere (we also bought Girl Scout cookies on our way out), and it fits perfectly with the locality. Our family are regulars when we are in Mathews. Definitely the best restaurant in Mathews and as good as any restaurant in the DC area as far as I am concerned. The pizzas are excellent and they have a great selection of microbrews. Their specials are also very good. The staff is very courteous and you feel like you are eating with family when you are there. Ned and Dia have gone out of their way to run an excellent restaurant. As one other reviewer said you do sometimes feel like you should be helping them clean up. We find it hard to go to any other restaurant in Mathews and always seem to end up here. If you come after 6pm expect to wait as it is generally packed every night. This is for my money the best place to eat in Mathews, and the crowds show it. If you want to eat in on a weekend you should probably come early. Last time I ate here at 6 pm on a Saturday and had to wait about a half hour for a table (which is sort of longer than you'd expect for this area). The food, though, is worth it. I've eaten here several times and gotten several different pizzas. They have all been delicious. Last time I created my own pizza with pesto, feta, and spinach. The one thing you must do is order a side of the buttermilk parmesan dressing and dip your crust in it. Either that or get it on a salad (the house salad is big enough to split). Saturday night. The wait was almost excruciatingly long. However, the pizza was great. I tried a dogfish head beer on tap, but it wasn't for me. The waitress was very nice restaurant was insanely busy and we always felt like we were welcome there. In my opinion the best part of the meal was the mixed berry pie with whipped cream and a cup of coffee at the end. I have heard many great things about this restaurant and I think they're true. Pizza and beer in a small town setting? I'm there! The pizza was really good and the restaurant does a great job delivering small town ambiance. After our meal, I would expect to see this establishment highlighted in the likes of a Southern Living magazine. My girlfriend also told me that most of their ingredients are locally grown...not sure if that is true but that is pretty rare to find these days. Highly recommended as a pit stop for anyone taking a day drive in the Mathews area. read more

What a great little place. We were staying at the Inn at Tabb's Creek and they recommended Southwind. Even though the town is small, we missed it b/c the address was incorrect. Yelp has corrected it to 44 Church St. We were greeted at the door by the owner and seated quickly. The place was a bustle with lots of local and quite a few of us tourists as well. We enjoyed our meals and the the food was very good (they have a lot more than pizza). It was fun to watch all of the locals speak to each other. I think it says a lot for the food if that many locals continue to dine there. The service on this night was a bit slow, but we were not in a hurry. read more

Oh what a great experience. The filet Oscar and mahi-mahi on Asian slaw. Amazing! Really enjoyed the risotto balls appetizer with goat cheese. Save room for the double chocolate cake. Food was rough, we ordered a fairly basic pizza that was thick and bready without the added complexity of the cheese or sauce. There are not too many options in town to eat, but personally I would go elsewhere for food. We also had chicken tenders that were weakly breaded and maybe a bit under cooked. With that said, the atmosphere here was amazing, real neighborhood bar type place with bar games and ample seating. The beer selection was excellent, good mix of local beers and bar staples. I would much rather come back here to knock back a few drinks for a few hours than I eat, so for something to do in the area, check it out. read more

Southwind Pizza - New American Near Me - Mathews, Virginia

This little gem is a find in this tiny town so far from civilization! The specialty pizzas are delicious. Our favorites are the Hogg Island or the Gwynn's Island. Almost all of their soups are to die for. We especially like the cream of asperagus and the cream of brocoli. We like the atmosphere and weekend music--which almost makes you feel like you've been transported to somewhere that is far from this tiny sometimes backwards town. The staff is very good (you go to the counter to order and the staff brings the food out to you.) They have a great selection of microbrewed beers and wines. Its a quirky, arty, culteral oasis in what can sometimes be a wasteland of culteral opportunities. The only drawback is that they usually are only open on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Upstairs they sell goods imported from many cultures and countries. The only way they could improve this is to put it somewhere where you actually WANT to visit other than Mathews, to stay open more often and later, and to expand their space and have a sidewalk cafe. read more

Brought my family here over Spring Break. Looked decent online and there aren't too many options in 'downtown' Mathews. The building was nice but we sat on the porch because the weather was great and we were trying to be considerate of others as we have small kids that can sometimes be a little loud. The server (mid 20s, skinny, brown-haired white lady) seemed 100% indifferent to us being there. We had to flag her down for menus, drinks, refills etc. We saw that some other kids inside had coloring books and crayons and asked about them. She just said "Yeah, they're inside by the bar. Help yourself." OK, I though you were the waitress, but whatever, I got a burger that was way under cooked. I also got fries. Those came out on a separate plate 5-10 minutes after the burger. My kids got a cheese pizza (a large, at her suggestion that they run 'small'). The thing was enormous and could have fed my entire family. My wife ordered a beer and asked for a glass with it. The glass never came. Icing on the cake was when the waitress loudly went on and on about how much she loves her "Christian Chicken" from Chick fil a and how her new young minister is the best one ever and could turn any nonbeliever into a believer, blah blah blah. Listen, we didn't come for a sermon. We came for lunch and you screwed it up. Needless to say we won't be returning next time we are visiting family in the area. All that said, they have an excellent beer selection and the food other people had ordered looked decent, but the waitress just ruined the whole experience. read more

We were staying in the area, so we decided to drive down and look around "downtown" Mathews. A couple of nice shops, library and grocery store. The general store/information center was lovely. We decided to stay for lunch and opted for Southwinds. Very warm welcome, friendly staff and locals. Nice selection of fresh artisan pizzas and local style dishes. Nice selection of wine and beer. My wife had pizza, enough for 2, and I had shad roe with ham on toasted French bread! The pizza was very good, but the roe was superb! Count your blessings if you get seated outside. While the interior is nicely decorated and the chef is friendly, it has tightly packed tables and horrible acoustics. You cannot hear the person seated across from you and the food is mediocre at best. I dined with someone's butt in my face, as they stood near the bar. My date had elbows in his face as the wait staff punched in dinner orders next to his head. Dining should not be stressful. My steak was somewhat chewy and you do not get a choice of sides. I will not be going back as I enjoy talking to my dates and better scenery than someone's butt in my face. read more

Kind of like the 'where everyone knows your name' place, with music! Great food, friendly and everyone does seem to know everyone! I was in town visiting and making new friends and my first time to Southwind was also a jam night. My friends joined in and played cello and guitar while some of the other jammers played mandolin, bass fiddle, and, if you can imagine it, a shiny red toy piano! Fabulous! Mathews, Va. reminds me 'The Andy Griffith Show', small town, everyone knows everyone, everyone is smiling, friendly and happy. And, Southwind is an extension of that very thing. About an hour from Williamsburg, Va., about 1 1/2 hours from Richmond, Va. Airport. What can I say? I am in love with Southwind Cafe, the staff, the food, the atmosphere, and love the live music, the jam session during the week.... Regarding the outdoor seating, I think there were a few tables outside but honestly, why would anyone want to do that when all the action is inside?? Ok so I want to mention the food: really good food, really good pizza, really good salads, and as for dessert...well, well, well, I can only speak for a chocolate/almond layer cake kind of thing that I shared with my friend.....and after the first bite, did not want to share!!! read more

We drove into Mathews for the day from Newport News and were rewarded with a wonderful experience at Southwind Cafe. We had a nice, wide variety of delicious craft beers to choose from to start as we appreciated the charming atmosphere of the restaurant. We were helped by a very friendly and attentive waitress who told us their pizza was ranked 2nd best in all of Virginia, to which my wife ordered the Berkley Island pizza, and it was... Amazing. I saw on another Yelp review a photo of a cioppino which looked outstanding. It wasn't on the menu, so I asked the waitress if they had anything similar. She went and asked the owner/chef who was kind enough to come out to our table and he offered to make me an order from scratch. It was even better than the photo suggested, very flavorful and beautifully/perfectly prepared. We are very happy we've found this place and look forward to returning soon and often. read more

And, if you can go on Thursdays night, that is their music night, where locals come in and play. Quite spectacular. And bring the kids.
