Marty at Angelita's is rocking the smoothest, most balanced, long-enjoying, chocolatey, cold process, cold coffee I have had in a long time...and by long time, I mean, I'm a coffee roaster and I had some really good coffee Yesterday, back in San Francisco ... and to stumble across this careful, studious, mad scientist, meticulously light-roasting an amazing Brazilian bean from the Cerrado region...careful to not simply burn it like 90% of folks do, but hang wayyy back and let those complex fruit notes and spices survive the Texas heat AND humidity, and boom, in this music-lover's paradise of a room, quietly protected to perfection. The barista was super nice to chat with and he gave us great recommendations on what we might like best. I didn't want anything too sweet so the Shaken Amber he recommended hit the spot. It has some hints of chocolate with a satisfying amount of froth at the top (in my picture I already sipped most of it). My friend got the Matchata (matcha + horchata) which was DELICIOUS as well with a perfect amount of both matcha and horchata.

My latte was very good! The donut selection also looked pretty great - but I forgot to order one to take home to dad. The lady who took our order was very nice, and took extra care bringing our order to us (we could have easily gone to the counter to grab them, but she was kind enough to bring it over). Best of all, this spot is not very far from home, so visiting here regularly when I'm in town is much more realistic.

Mom and I visited GoodPeople. It's off Ruben Torres near a Goodwill store. It's cute and nice, but with a few tweaks I think they can be pretty great. The menu has your classics: cortado, lattes, americanos, cappuccinos, and pour over coffee, and a nice selection of specialty coffees, cold brew bar, tea, matcha beverages, and fruit refreshers. They also have an assortment of pastries and seasonal menus. I did make a comment that they should probably get the battery replaced in their smoke detector. The constant chirping was pretty distracting. I'm sure patrons who spend time there studying would appreciate that, too. Mom ordered a pistachio crunch cloud latte and a pink frosted cinnamon roll, and I got a rose bud cloud latte. I typically order a cortado as a "control" but I forgot this time around, which is a shame, because I really could have used that unit of measure. I wasn't too much of a fan, to be honest. The rose was very perfumey and overpowering. Before you come at me with, "Well, Cindy, duh, it's Rose," I've had plenty of rose lattes that were an absolute delight. (Curator Coffee comes to mind) It was the first time in recent memory I had trouble getting through my drink. Mom had the opposite problem. She thought her pistachio drink was too subtle on the pistachio! I got to taste it and, maybe it's because I had a mouth full of potpourri, but I thought it was okay. We chalked it up to the sweetness of the cinnamon roll clouding the nuance. (The cinnamon roll was great, by the way) Overall, happy we went, but with Brownsville finally starting to develop a nice showing of coffee shops, I think I have many other places I'd pick first.

We finally saw it was open and my mom, dad, and I went this morning to give it a shot. So, if you go too early, you run the risk of the baked goods not being ready yet, but by the time we left, the pistachio cookies were ready. They still had a good selection of sweets, though. Mom and I had the Mexican Latte, and it was perfect. Seems like they used the Abuela bar chocolate, cause some of the grit settled in the cup. I had a pan de elote and it was so perfect. I loved the decor inside. It was beautifully decorated. You wouldn't think this building is old as heck. The light fixtures, wall decor, etc was very pretty without being overwhelming. Service was great. There were two ladies manning the shop and I think the manager came in later. He let us know the pistachio cookies were ready. The girl making the lattes was very nice. I made sure to compliment her latte art, and she showed me a photo of a swan she made that she was very proud of! We placed a to go order for my sister and brother in law, and I also bought mug (for coffee and wine) for my collection. My family is looking forward to their next visit, and so am I!

We enjoyed a delicious affogato and lavender latte with the breakfast crepe that had Chipotle sauce and bacon. My only qualms were because of the rush no tables were being bussed and there were dirty plates everywhere, and any live plant I saw looked like it hadn't been watered in over a month. Several limp pothos on the brink of death- kind of a vibe killer. But I do love how many plants they have. Will be back!
