Soybean Chan 陳豆花, once a mom and pop flower shop with a tofu pudding (豆腐花) stand, recently renovated and split into three businesses housed in one store -- a tofu pudding shop and a coffee / boba tea bar prominently in the front of the store, with a smaller flower shop in the back. We visited the tofu pudding shop twice in recent weeks. The tofu pudding hasn't been as silken smooth as it should be, and after those two visits, we confirmed we still think it isn't. Soybean Chan is nonetheless is attempting to transform this basic, low-cost dessert into an upscale treat by offering multiple add-on options. The add-ons do make the tofu pudding more interesting, but they also reduce the amount of tofu pudding received because everything is packed into one container. And the add-ons don't improve the "mid" quality of the tofu pudding. We paid $11.98, including tax, in our last visit for a 32-oz container of "Classic Reunion Tofu Pudding" with Lychee Coconut Jelly. The staff member who took and fulfilled the order forgot the Lychee Coconut Jelly. A basic 32-oz container of tofu pudding here can cost as little as $6, including tax. The shop is geared for take-out, but there are two counter-height round bar tables for those interested in eating in. Same price cash or credit. Soybean Chan has another store in Elmhurst, NY, take-out only, which offers the basics at slightly lower prices, with similar, mediocre (though sometimes better), quality. Wong Kwong Hop in Elmhurst sells a smoother tofu pudding, $4 for a 32-oz container, albeit with a regular sugar syrup, not Soybean Chan's ginger syrup. read more

The new owners don't seem to really care at all! One of my orders, the All Star Tofu Pudding contained peanuts, which was NOT written on the menu. Those with a peanut allergy. Beware!!! This place was packed with people when it first opened but now it's rather deserted. We were the only people ordering yet they still got it wrong. It was a mistake to order an extra topping, because they completely forgot about it, even though the order sticker which said add extra topping (which I paid extra for) was attached to my takeout container. Prices are super high now. Way over-priced. Also if you order any toppings, you get less tofu. Any toppings, should really be put into a separate container, so you get the full amount of tofu. Taste. Not what it used to be. Seems rather watered down and not as smooth as before. Rather chunky, grainy. Sugar level. The toppings are made in a sweet syrup, so with toppings, you have no control over sugar level. You can only add more sugar, not less. The whole tub was a mushy mess. I grew up eating tofu pudding so I do have high standards, but this is not even "acceptable" level. I don't know what style tofu pudding this is but it is not a good representation of what tofu pudding should be like, whatever "style" it is. The signature options are also a much higher price but with less tofu. They fill up the tub to 3/4 and add the toppings, when the toppings are actually $6 more than the regular tofu pudding with no toppings. I've seen countless TikToks recommending Soy Bean Chan, which is run by a friendly old man at the front of a floral shop. When I visited, there was a line running out the door so clearly I had very high expectations, especially as a tofu lover. I ordered two large tofu puddings ($5 each) which came with a little container of a ginger simple syrup. It was hot and fresh out of the container and stayed warm even until I returned home hours later. I did like how ginger-forward the syrup was and the taste of the tofu pudding was pretty mild but fragrant. However, the texture of the tofu pudding was incredibly off-putting. I'm assuming either the soybeans weren't milled but blended or the ratio of coagulants were off because while I expected a soft and tender silken texture that would creak apart if I so much as looked at it, I instead got spoonfuls of a grainy textured tofu that was spotted with tiny curds. Extremely disappointing overall, but I am hopeful that perhaps I came on an off day.
