I've brought my Maltese here several times. He always looks beautifully groomed when done. My issue is the pricing. I don't mind paying $100.00 for grooming but every time I've come Yukimo changes the price! She stated he had a flea and she had to give him a flea dip. She charged me $178.00! Such a great place to get my dog cleaned and her fur trimmed. The owner is kind, gracious, and remembers pets and works their distinct personalities so well. My dog was never a fan of water or pet grooming paces before this place, and her fear now is alleviated after several worth while trips to spa for pets. Even when I lived in San Francisco, it was worth it to coordinate a way for her to get cleaned and groomed at spa for pets. My dog is always looking her cleanest and sharpest after leaving. I have never had an issue with anything here. The staff is transparent about pricing, communicative, and trustworthy with animals. Which is worth mentioning since other places aren't necessarily like that at all. Grateful to be a customer here! read more

I just want to note that even now, 5 years later, I still only go to Yumiko for grooming! Olive (almost 8 years old poodle mix) always looks great no matter who grooms her from her team. Olive is very sensitive to dog grooming and other places are unable to handle her because she gets very stressed out. It can take a long time for Olive to be finished but I know it's because Yumiko gives Olive periods of rest so Olive isn't too stressed out!! Yumiko is very caring of Olive's emotions! This post is long overdue. And now that I just left a stellar review for Canine Showcase, it reminded me to leave one for this place. Sadly, you cannot leave 0 stars. Do not bring your dog here for handstripping. Even though Yumiko says she can. SHE CANNOT. I brought in my Norwich Terrier for a handstripping and she came out looking like a beat up Westie. It was so insane. I paid in advance because someone else was picking her up. I wish I hadn't because if I would have picked her up myself, I would have taken her and walked out. She would have had to call the police. My poor dog was so sheepish and so tender to the touch - she even had major bald spots. It was awful. I asked for a refund and she refused. Finally she said she would give me half back (it was $140). And when she did, she still said, it was not her fault - that she was not taking responsibility for it. I don't even know how that works in her mind but whatever. I'm sure Yumiko is fine and capable with clippers, but do not trust her to handstrip your wirey-haired dog. I will attach a few photos. I have a Coton de Tulear, which is a fluffy long-haired white dog that is pretty difficult to groom. We like to keep his hair on the longer side, which makes it even harder to maintain. I once read a comment on some random website where a groomer said they refused to work with Cotons because their hair "mats from just sitting there", or something like that. Yumiko came highly recommended to me by the breeder from whom we adopted our dog, Indy. Many of Indy's siblings and cousins use Yumiko's grooming services as well. When she grooms Indy, his hair is ultrasoft and stays silky for a long time. I wish I could learn her secret! Whenever my I bathe and condition him, his hair feels coarser afterwards and it doesn't take long for mats to start developing again. Indy does this "smiling" thing where he shows all his teeth, which he only does when he sees people he really likes. Yumiko is one of these people. :) read more

I'm really sad to write this, but the quality of service at this facility has gone down since we first brought our dog in three years ago. Our dog's hair has been more choppy looking and not even, nails cut so short that we see the pink part of his nails and him acting really odd after his grooming session. He has been licking his paw a lot ever since his grooming. We told Yumiko his nails were cut too short last time and to make sure that it would not be as short. Unfortunately, she didn't listen. We have not been satisfied with the quality of service and the amount of money we pay to get our dog groomed. It feels as if they are really busy and rushing to get a lot of dogs groomed. Due to our experience the past couple grooming sessions and how things have turned out, we will not be returning to this facility. Time to find another groomer. read more

I've been bringing my shiba here for monthly bath/brush out and the occasional boarding since 2003. Unlike chain stores, the groomers here are experienced with grooming show dogs and acknowledge shibas are "weird" about getting wet or having their paws touched, and may scream bloody murder (though mine's mute). While the ownership has changed, the grooming staff has remained the same and I can't say enough good things about Tina and Justin. I also appreciate the owner Janet's flexibility in fitting us in at short notices. Anyhow, the main reason I love them is they care enough to give me feedback out of concern for my fur kid's health. For instance, there was a while when I had my fur kid on Advantage monthly, and he started to bald/thin around his shoulder blades. Tina noticed the change and suggested I might want to consult w/ the vet. Another time I was trying to get the fur kid to loose weight and went overboard, they gently suggested he was on the thin side. They respect my input to either shave my shiba's pads or leave them alone depending on seasonality, and do a good job with his nails. Other than the place occasionally smelling more like cats than I'd like (I suspect allergies or sensitivity on my part), and I can't fault them for hosting rescue cats who need forever homes, I'm really surprised by the one-star review. read more

Went here for the first time yesterday with my golden retriever. He had been nicked at the last place we took him, plus they cut his hair so short he looked like a yellow lab which led me to go searching for a new groomer. I was referred to Spa for Pets by a friend who has used them for grooming and pet sitting for over a decade, so under old management and new management and they were happy in both cases. Even with a friend vouching for them, I got a bit nervous reading some of these negative Yelp reviews, but when I picked up my dog all my fears were put to rest! He had the perfect golden retriever hair cut (not short and spiky like the other place), was nick-free - which is not easy when his fur was a bit dread-locked and matted in a couple places -- and happy as can be. I will continue to bring him to Spa for Pets and update if we get any different experiences, but for now I can say I'm a dedicated client and wouldn't hesitate to refer them to dog owners (and cat owners too, though I haven't yet tried them on my cat). read more

We're so lucky to have found Yumiko on Yelp! I have two small shih tzus, Maile & Lola, who are like my kids. I have a hard time leaving them with just anyone, but I trust them w/Yumiko. She's groomed them three times now, and they always come home happy and looking good! Here's what's great about her shop: + Scheduling is professional, and it's easy to get appointments. Unlike some of the other groomers we've tried, there's no hard sell to book the next appointment . + Yumiko is fast and super accommodating. Unlike some of the other groomers who kept my girls for 8+ hrs, Yumiko usually finishes in half that time, so the girls come home happy.....not stressed out and dying of thirst. + Even though she's a dog show-certified groomer, Yumiko listens to her clients' requests (i.e. to trim the ears or tail a certain way) and doesn't act like she knows better. + Pricing and service is consistent. Unlike other groomers, what she charges ($65 for each of my dogs) is consistent with what she quotes. She doesn't tack on bogus additional fees at the end. + The shop is light and bright, and there's convenient parking. We usually pull right up to the front door. + Yumiko always sends the girls home with cute little bows in their ears. (This one's kind of silly, I know, but it's the details that count!) I'd asked for them at other groomers, but they'd act like I was asking for something unreasonable OR they'd just ignore my request and send the girls home with lame handkerchiefs tied around their necks. + And lastly, my girls come home HAPPY! We have been taking our doggies there for years, and if they were writing this review, then five stars would not be enough. They know the name of it, and so if the name "Spa for Pets" comes up in conversation, they become ecstatic in a distinctly pavlovian way. They must be doing something right to get the dogs so excited about a trip to the Spa for Pets. And, to the other reviewer, if someone in the world has tattoos and you don't like their tattoos, why do you care? No one is forcing you to fall in love with her tattoos. And I doubt that your pet is going to leave the Spa for Pets with an unexplained yearning for a new tattoo. So, let's leave the staff alone with our "pet"-tiness, shall we? The staff is highly skilled and took our feedback to heart when we asked that our dogs (3 Bichons Frises) be groomed in the manner required by the AKC in conformation dog shows. They look better now than they did when their specialist groomer cut their hair for the sake of turning them into champions. I have been taking my dog (Lucky, portugese water dog) here for years and every time I come to pick him up I have always been greeted with a warm smile and proper greeting. And when he comes bounding out from the back room WOW he always looks great --PWD's don't shed so he must get cut often. And not to mention his fur feels so soft and smells good too. I am always pleased with their work and the whole staff is so nice! Including the dog washers and groomers, not just the front-men/front-woman. And if I had ever not liked the way my dog came out the groomers were always kind about it and never had a problem sprucing him up a bit to meet my (very high) standards. I am very cautious about most things I do meaning whenever I need something done I want it done right and I seek our people who have used services before that I'm looking for. I was really excited about being a regular costumer here based off it being close to my house. I brought my dog here for the first time for a hair cut. I told the guy exactly what I wanted. A short cut with a top notch. He tried to talk me out of it. I wasn't sure why. I came a few hours later to pick up my dog and everything looked good. The person who cut her hair said everything went well and my dog did great. Later when I went home I noticed an inch and a half cut on her tail. It was completely bald and bloody. It looked as if someone had dropped the clippers on her. The rest of her fur was about a third of an inch so it was weird that there was a bald spot that big. I called to complain and the lady that cut her hair tried to explain to me that sometimes the skin tears when they brush out knots. But then why was it completely bald? If they brushed it out why was the hair missing? If they had told me when I picked her up that they accidentally cut her it would be a different story. But the fact that they tried to cover it up... I've been taking my shih tzu to Spa for Pets on a monthly basis, for almost a year now. Both the groomers and front desk reception are always very nice and keep a card on file for you, so that they can remember all the specifics regarding the type of cut you want. Making an appointment is very easy to do over the phone, and they're usually able to see me the same week. I try to make appointments on weekdays - since weekends appointments can take up to 5-6 hours before you can pick up. The normal "grooming service" on a weekday takes a few hours - and i believe includes hair cut, wash, nail clipping, ear hair plucking, and anal gland cleanse. The dogs are kept in kennels while not being worked on. Yumiko does a great job trimming and shaping my dog's face - giving my shih tzu a puppy cut and a teddy bear-like appearance. I've taken my dog to many different places around San Mateo and Saratoga, and this groomer definitely has the most skill, and also has true staff members (meaning someone's there to PICK UP the phone, and can give you an ETA on when your doggy is ready for pick up)! If you're a first time customer, make sure to call and ask for a quote before you bring your dog in. They keep the price they charge on file, via your customer card. read more

Brought my pup here because of the good reviews on yelp. Place seemed pretty dingy and outdated when I first walked in, but I overlooked that. Left my Australian Shepherd there for about 4 hours and $70 later she hardly looked touched. I have to have her groomed somewhere else now since they didn't do anything really. I am furious. Horrified. Feel as though we dodged a bullet. We dropped our budgie off at Spa for Pets on a Saturday afternoon, then picked him up Tuesday morning. His cage paper hadn't been changed, his water dish was almost empty, and his food dish was full of empty husks. When contacted, the owner said that his water had been replenished (clearly untrue, given that it was almost empty) and that she'd been adding fresh food to his existing food, rather than emptying the dish out and filling it according to the written instructions attached to his cage. This is really, really basic stuff. Fresh food. Fresh water. Fresh cage paper for feces removal and disease prevention. Written instructions were attached to the outside of the cage. There were phone numbers, too, in case there were questions. Do you not know how to take care of birds? Okay. Ask questions. Or, if in doubt, do it. Change the paper. COMPLETELY EMPTY THE FOOD AND WATER DISHES AND REFILL THEM. The "care" our bird received is the type of "care" which kills birds. These people clearly don't know how to take care of birds at all, even to the extent of replenishing their food and water. If our vacation hadn't been cut short, we might not have had a bird to return to. If you have a bird, I would steer clear of this organization. I would also think twice about leaving a dog, cat or other creature with them. Giving creatures fresh water and a fresh supply of food is really basic common sense. If they can't manage to do it for a bird, there's no reason to believe they can do it for any other creature. P.S. If you don't know how to take care of a creature, either please don't accept it for boarding or take some sort of positive action. Have the creature's owners fill out an information sheet detailing the care regimen, for example. Ask questions. Call the owners. Keep an animal care library on hand. Our bird was so very hungry that he was attacking the food dish on the way home whenever something that looked like a grain of food popped up. He would have been better off we'd abandoned him in the house with pie dishes full of food and water. read more

I swore I would never go to this place ever again after the first time I brought my dog here the owner was insanely rude, did not groom my dog how I asked them to and thought their opinion was better. I saw that they were under new management and I saw all the new positive reviews and decided that I would once again try going to Spa for Pets. I brought my dog home and he has cuts all over his body and I mean on his ears, legs, belly, and paws. How is it possible that there were so many cuts and they did not bother telling me about any of them?? My dogs ear had some hair in it (minor ear infection--have been putting stuff to help it and cleaning at home) so I asked them to please groom them as well as they could. When I examined my dogs ear it was bring pink almost red while the other normal ear was a light pink like it should be. As far as the hair cut goes its not like I couldn't have gotten the same exact thing somewhere else. For $70 it certainly was not worth it. read more

I think that Yumiko, the shop owner, is a fantastic groomer who is very good with dogs. We have taken our dog to her three times now and each time has been a great experience. Our dog is a rescue who is somewhat fearful of strangers. He was very nervous when we took him in, but Yumiko was very patient and gave him a lot of TLC, and by the third visit he was wagging his tail to see her and was not resistant at all. Yumiko is the best groomer...and is a Master!!! I take my two shih tzus for groomer on a regular basis. She does an awesome job with the haircuts. The best compliment I can give is one that the breeder of my second shih tzu. The breeder (who has champion show dogs - her shih tzus) looked my shih tzu's paws and face...and was absolutely amazed how well groomed he looked. The breeder said that Yumiko grooms show dog quality...and that says a lot. Highly recommend anyone seeking a groomer. Yumiko is the best! read more

Well.....NEVER AGAIN!!!!!! I took my dog over there couple times. First time they did a great job but after that it all went downhill. I do have little yorkie and I always ask for puppy(messy) cut...not those helmet lines on the head. Even after give them a photo of my dog with an awesome cut...they still could not do a proper job. Their main groomer (big woman scary woman with a tattoos) has TUNNEL VISION...She just can do traditional cut, per breed of course. When I picked up my dog yesterday I was shocked that same thing happened again. I talked to owner and hehehehe...only reply was..."I think he looks cute".I mean, I don't look for what you like since I'M PAYING 60 USD...I want what I like... At the end, final insult was" Well this time I'm going to give you 10% off" I politely declined, pay full bill and took off... LIKE I SAID...NEVER AGAIN... THIS PLACE BLOWS AND IT'S NOT WORTH YOUR TIME, MONEY AND YOUR SANITY..... First, I want to thank them for making room to clean my dog during the holidays, but overall I was not impressed. The place was a not well maintained and the staff presented an unprofessional image. I did not find them rude or awful, but just not impressed. My dog, who has never shown out and out anxiety at the vet or any of the other groomers we have used was shivering. Full blown shivering. Really took me by surprise. He was shivering when we picked him up too. I found the staff very kind and patient, but I was left feelling uncomfortable by my animal's response. Overall the job was satisfactory, but I will not be using their services again on my next visit to California. Lovely people. Very nice location. Clients seem to really like it here. We had our pups hand stripped here and regrettably didn't quite get what we were looking for. We don't show our dogs, we never will, we just want to keep their coats short so that they don't get too hot and don't shed quite so much. So we brought pictures of what their breeder used to do and asked her to do the same. "We want them naked, as short as we can get the coat." They came out with more hair than expected, and that'd be ok except that their behinds were left way too hairy. So three days after getting stripped they already have poop getting stuck in their hair. I guess we just have to keep looking for a hand stripper read more

Spa for Pets saved my mini goldendoodle! I am a new pet owner and took my dog to Petco for her first grooming. That was a big mistake! Petco traumatized her and when I picked her up, she was completely scared. Driving home, I remembered my friend telling me about Spa for Pets. I walked in and showed them how Petco butchered her haircut. Spa for Pets took her in immediately and fixed her haircut. My goldendoodle now looks great! My dog seemed happy and excited at pickup.
