Changed their menu and I'm not impressed. The prices are high. The quality is just not there. If I'm going to pay Elway's prices, I think the food should be comparable. Pros: The salad was a nice size and attractive. The portion size was good. The salad itself tasted good. The cheesesteak was tasty. Cons: As mentioned above, the first thing is that the prices are high. $2 to add peppers, onions and mushrooms to a cheesesteak sandwich? $6 to add protein to an $11 salad? Secondly, both the sauce and the dressing were too much. The cheesesteak was swimming in the cheese sauce. The salad had a little pool at the bottom of the bowl. The parmesan kale was to parmesan-y. Finally, the tater tots tasted sweet. They were my lunch partners and when I notice that she wasn't eating them, I asked to try one. I noticed it tasted sweet and she agreed, saying that's why she wasn't eating them. We told our server, who told us that it was the Old Bay seasoning. They didn't taste like Old Bay. They tasted like someone sprinkled them with sugar. She went back and asked the kitchen and told us that there was no sugar on them. (The bill included the tots. I was hoping she would have taken them off.) I asked if she tasted them and she said that she was going to, but she hadn't. Overall negative experience. $37 bill for a sandwich with tots and a salad (no protein) with a side of kale. No drinks. Even though I've been a regular customer, I won't be back. read more

Spanky's was practically my second home during my third quarter of grad school at DU, and even though I've since graduated, I still drop in for a drink or a burger from time to time. I've tried just about everything on the menu, and think they do a great job of putting their own gourmet twist on pub staples. The food is great for the most part. They have some unusual ingredients in menu items that can either make or break the meal, but the bottomless mimosas are great (and fairly priced). The key point of my visit every time is the service I receive. Michelle is the best effing server ever and has catered to my many personalities on weekend brunches (exhausted, hungover, sick, and perfectly normal me). She is always so personable and does whatever she can to make my time there as good as it can be, even in the midst of a chaotic brunch. read more

It was Friday after the lunch crowd left and I found out the $1 PBR's were cold and I kept them coming! The burger , well it was ok maybe that was why the PBR's were flowing so fast! I love this place! Not only do they have a great atmosphere to watch games, their staff is amazing and always attentive. A few of the waitresses enjoy giving me new suggestions to build my own burger each time I visit. Oh and did I mention the wings?? Blows Buffalo Wild Wings out of the water. Hot Honey is the sauce of the year! I don't usually review places but since moving to DU area a couple months back this place has really made an impression on me. The reason we came to urban roadhouse was to celebrate my recent admission into grad school at DU and finished moving into my apartment. Ive ordered from Spankys many times before but unfortunately this time when I received my meal it was completely wrong. I contacted the restaurant and spoke to a very rude female manager who admitted that she was the one who put my meal together and didn't check it. I revived two salads that came with either the wrong protein or no protein at all, we revived the wrong dressings plus the food tasted/looked burnt and old. My experience with the manger was very unsettling since she was the one who made the mistake but wasn't willing to do anything to fix it. Use to love eating at this restaurant but the way they treat their costumers is embarrassing so they have lost our business. read more

The atmosphere is very nice and relaxed, the staff are super friendly and the food isn't too bad. I ordered a tuna melt and my boyfriend ordered a burger with queso on it. We also ordered a peaches and cream shake which was delicious. The tuna melt was probably a poor ordering decision on my part just because it is really a hit or miss item. This was a truly awful experience--made worse by the fact I work at DU and am always on the hunt for places that are both walkable and that I can recommend to prospective & current students. To be fair, my co-worker and I went in on DU hockey night, so it was crowded. However, I've worked at universities for over 10 years, so I'm not easily put-off by noise & people; swiftly serve me a good beer and I'm content. But, the service was beyond slow, and the food shockingly overpriced. We ordered cheese curds (which I'm overly familiar with from my Wisconsin dairy farmer family!) and got a very small basket of 10 small curds for $8.95. Obscene. When we politely complained, it was met with hostility and NO effort to give us a better experience--we hadn't even eaten them! They even had the nerve to tell us they were a delicacy, "flown in" special from the dairy state. B.S. I didn't bother to stick around and sample the $18 fish fry--come on guys, this is an insult to Wisconsin bar food. I went the other day with some friends. I never ate at Spanky's before the renovation but will definitely be going back now. The atmosphere is very architectural with exposed ceilings and such. I had the short rib sandwich and it was awesome. It is a little expensive, but everything around the DU campus pretty much is. The place isn't very big so go early to make sure you do not have to wait. Parking is also a little tight so walk if you can. My friend had a hamburger and she said it was really good too. read more

The food is good but pricey. Main problem is they don't have reliable internet or accessible outlets for you to charge your computer/phone. This is a University area and people have homework to do. No more real "lake perch" at Spanky's roadhouse!!!!!!!!! I grew up in MI with lake perch dinners everywhere. There is nothing else like it for comfort food. I only rarely get to go to Spanky's because my wife says it is too expensive - I can wait til I get back to MI. But I have been good and was allowed to go tonight and we both order perch. And out comes a slab of fish larger than their walleye. My degree in fish biology was not needed to know this is not lake perch from the US great lakes area. When we get the manager out to explain he says it is lake perch. When pressed he says it s lake perch from Lake Victoria! Then he says it is what Seattle Seafood sells is now selling as lake perch. And then he says he is going to cancel the weekend fish fry because he gets too many complaints about the food. When I tell him I am going to post on web he says he doesn't have a web page. Oh well. No more Great Lake perch at Spanky's, even if it is still on the menu and still on the large road sign. After 13 years of being a customer I have had enough. Their service has been on a steady decline for the past 2 years but I really wanted a burger so I stopped in. I was sat at the bar with little acknowledgment from the person seating me and was promptly ignored by the wait staff for 10 minutes. If the manager hadn't asked me what I wanted to drink I wouldn't have even got that far. While this was happening there was a waiter sitting at the counter, "borrowing" sunglasses from customers and otherwise screwing around. I've tried to flag him down three times with no luck, even after looking right at me. The two waitress were also of no use, though one of them was working. The manager was also screwing around and minus my drink ignored me. The only thing that happened that was a positive experience was when I flagged the manager down and asked how much for the drink, he gave it to me for free and I left. At this point I had wasted almost half of my lunch break and ended up getting Chipolte and run back to the office. Needless to say I am never returning to this place. Their food has also been on the decline while their prices went up and up. I would avoid this place if you expect service of any sort (I've had better service from Burger King) or to even get your order right. The food isn't any better than Chili's and at least 2 bucks more per plate (and even when they are busy their service is far better). If they had been busy I can understand a delay, but a head count. of the place showed only a third of the tables inside with people at them and 1 outside with 5 people at the bar, including myself. There is no excuse for this service (or really the lack thereof). I would skip this place in a heart beat, there are far better burger places near by and if you really need a bar Illegal Pete's has one and its about 100 feet away. read more

If I could put 6 stars I would! The atmosphere is great and the food is even better. It's very mellow and has reasonable prices for the quality of the food. They also have no trouble making replacements for your dietary restrictions. For example, if you're vegetarian, you can easily substitute portobellos for meat. The food is very good, and they recently renovated the restaurant which really made the atmosphere a lot more universal. My big complaint is mainly with the service; it's not consistent at all. Living down the street from Spanky's, I end up there pretty frequently either to grabs drinks, breakfast, or dinner with friends. Every time the service is just kind of slow and absent minded almost. They seem to turn tables quickly and have a mostly college clientele-- maybe this is why the attention to service isn't exactly prime. I do not know how to approach writing a sufficent review of Spanky's Roadhouse, by sufficent I mean a review that approaches it subject in a balanced and objective manner. As sometimes burgers can seem like basic far. With that being said Spanky's makes a good burger I will give them that. Furthermore the interior of Spanky's is very nice it is retro yet current and it is usually very clean. The food is usually very good but not something that makes ones mouth orgasm with pleasure. The Buffalo meat which they use enhances the burgers that Spanky's makes, and it also alleles the guilt of eating a huge burger. The few time in which I have been to Spanky's Roadhouse I had the Green Chili Burger. I highly recommend it as it is quiet tasty. I would also recommend the wings. The sauce which Spanky's uses for its wings tasted fresh and for the most part well balanced and well blended. I haven't had much of its alcohol aside from a few pictures of beer. I suppose I should have some of its mixed drinks in order to write a better review. Overall Spanky's is a decent burger joint with prices that are for the most part fair. read more

Just like Oz's wayward travelers had succumb to the field of poppies, I too was enticed into giving into a human need. As I walked down my yellow brick road AKA East Evans, I was sucked into this humble looking establishment for the sole reason of the enticing odoriferous emanations being expelled from this joint's kitchen chimney. The rather unimpressive decor didn't phase me as much as the psychotic individual (flying monkeys or wicked witch?) who sat beside me and proceeded to verse me on a colorful range of inappropriate subjects. Toto soon was found in the form of a delicious, gut busting burger that I must tip my hat to the chef for preparing. It was expensive for a burger and the establishment is "no place like home", in fact the food I had was the only reason I am giving this place 3 stars. Service was spotty, I think it must have been either a shift change or a hand-off when I was there. Been stopping by for a few years. Typically the staff is friendly and attentive. Not so much the last time. The bar tender was distracted most of the evening chatting with folks at the bar so the rest of us waited. Although one of the waiters was pleasant and engaging unfortunately he was not at our table. The food is good and the place has a great menu. I hope the manager figures out the issue with a couple of the staff before they chase customers away.
