This place fits the classic definition of a Dive Bar! Typically I will only go here in the summer when they have the back deck open and I can be outside. On those visits I enjoy the place. The inside is divided into two sections. One side is smoking, the other side is non-smoking. The inside is very dark and dingy between the paint and decor. It is kind of depressing. From time to time on weekends they will have a half decent band. It is good if you come with a group of friends who you know. If I were to rate the inside versus the outside separately, outside would get 4 stars and inside would get a 1 star. I decided to be kind and lean more towards three stars average. We were looking for the nostalgia of Spanky's/Macadoo's from days past in Fredericksburg, Blacksburg, Charlottesville, etc. Go to the right for non-smoking. They have a very full bar on both sides! This place might be named the same, but that's about it. The menu is different and there is no kitchy decor. It's a good restaurant though. Our server was Kristine S and she was super nice and on the ball. I was informed the egg salad had celery in it, so I opted for a grilled cheese, which was just fine. Don't know where to start, but I will go to the staff first...AWESOME...i don't think I have ever had to wait more than a minute for service. Everyone from Joni, Haylei,Shawnna, Erik, Bobby, Cathy, Anna, Shelby, Lori, hell even the barback Zack ROCK! Drinks are reasonably priced and their selection is growing, not much of a beer drinker but always have plenty of Miller Lite and its always cold!! I have been coming here for 10 years, love the place!! Hell ill go in there sometimes just to catch the regulars. I have networked in this place and met all walks of life here, you won't find a more open, diverse place to gather friends and let the good times roll!! And I keep hearing about all these other wing places and I haven't found one yet that can top theirs! Simply the size alone is enough to get my vote! Favorite pub in this area. Drinks good, food good, smoking section. What more can you ask from a pub? Well, they're not Irish as advertised, and I don't usually like the Saturday night live music, but that's a personal thing. I'd prefer Irish music - maybe the local band Craggy Island. Spanky's is oddly located in a strip mall. We almost couldn't find the place because it was solely labeled "Shenanigans". After receiving a recommendation for an item not on their menu from two patrons, I decided to try their grilled shrimp. You can order it by the pound. I also got some fried pickles and the bf got the oversized rasta chicken sandwich and fries. The shrimp was awesome. A hint of heat and char add a ton of flavor. Admittedly, I rarely eat shrimp, but I would eat this shrimp again and again. Their fried pickles were salty and mushy - a disappointment compared to the shrimp. As for the chicken sandwich, it was delicious but was more "regular" than "over" in size. read more

Half smoking, half second-hand smoking bar and grill. They have a nice selection on craft and usual suspect beers as well as a really diverse menu with tons of food options. I had a very good pastrami and fries meal while visiting. Didn't blow me away but better than your standard bar food offerings. The wait staff is awesome and that helps make this spot bearable for a reformed smoker. I would definitely stop in for a beer and bite the next time I am in the area. So this is a locals bar with good service and consistantly tasty bar food. I would recommend the sandwiches. I always have hard time deciding between the Wexford, the Danny Boy, the Mulligan and the chicken wrap. Their cheese fries are seriously the best around. If you are looking for a place to go for a few drinks and a lunch or dinner this is your best bet in da Burg. They have 3 sections- smoking (which can get really smokey as the night goes on), non-smoking (where the band usually is) and the back deck (which has a bar, tables and an area to play bags). I can't say I've been crazy about the bands I've heard there but it's always a pretty good time. This is a "dive" bar. It's one of the only bars that I know of that you can still smoke in. Actually I don't know any others.... i don't smoke but the bar seems like a place that existed 10-20 years ago which I'm pretty sure it has. So that's something. I was a little nervous the first time I walked into Spanky's, but I have become a repeat customer. There is a smoking side (which I have never actually been in) and a non smoking side. Unfortunately, the non smoking part still smells of smoke, but as you sit in it, you don't smell it. The food is great, and we have always had friendly and fast service. Phil the manager informed my group I was unwelcomed when I had not ordered any drinks. My dog was with me on the patio on a leash behaving herself and loved by other customers. However I was not personally spoken to by this "manager" personally but apparently refused because he was unsatisfied by our friendly atmosphere and generous tips. I had no tab however the police were called due to a "disturbance" that no one in my group had been aware of. When I learned that this bar had a smoking section, I was hesitant to go.... I've found that smoke-friendly restaurants typically have smoke wafting through the non-smoking side. I was pleased to discover the non-smoking side was truly smoke-free. As far as pub food -- this place does a pretty good job. We had the fish taco -- which was excellent -- and the fish and chips. The fried fish is more batter than fish, so I wasn't a fan, but I will admit it was tasty. The prices are reasonable. And the servers all seemed pleasant, with the exception of ours, who was down-right ornery. She might have put a damper on our evening, but everyone is so friendly that we easily overlooked it. As others have noted, this is a strip-mall bar and for what it is, I was pleasantly surprised. An Irish bar, however, it is not. I like a brogue with my beer -- which you won't find here. If you do, too, you don't have to go far --O'Sullivans and Ned Devine's -- both in Herndon -- have Irish servers. We tested this place out on St. Paddy's day -- the true test of an Irish bar -- and it wasn't terribly busy. They still commanded a $10/per person cover for the band.... which didn't play anything remotely Irish. Boo! For a local, sports bar... this place is as good as any. I was in Leesburg on business and had a lot to do so I ordered over the phone and had the food delivered to my room. It arrived in under 30 minutes and was still nice and hot. I had the Caesar Salad with the flank steak. The salad was a bit skimpy but the steak was excellent and for the extra 3 dollars it was quit a bit. So 5 stars I had the shrimp with pasta and both were excellent and a hearty portion with a very reasonable price. 5 stars again. I saw a couple and only a couple of bad reviews and owning a business myself where I pride myself as being the best, I still get a couple here and there that will never be happy. Food wasn't bad, but it took way to long to be brought to the table. I ordered the Chicken kabobs, vegetables, and a Greek Salad (they didn't have Greek dressing, which was odd). Waitress apologized and said it was because someone "stole" my salad. Friends each had wings and said they weren't bad. Check was never brought to table so we went up to the bar to pay. When I showed the yelp coupon, I got a big eye roll and was told they needed a manager to take the amount off. Nothing fancy but overall the experience was good. Went on a Saturday night and they had a live band called 'Mandatory Recess'. Wasn't too crowded and the servers kept the beers coming rather quickly. Didn't have anything to eat as we had just left a restaurant so I can't comment on the food. Spanky's was the only bar we spotted within a reasonable walking distance from the Best Western. 7 of us walked from the hotel to grab a few drinks. The place is pretty spacious and has a entire half of the bar that is glassed in for all the cigarette smokers. It was a Thursday night so the place wasnt too crowded, the lone bartender on the non smoking side did a swell job of checking in on us and taking our drink orders. Very good happy hour prices for beer. Decent lunch place. Great service. We used our Yelp app discount without having to display the actual coupon, as my phone was having trouble accessing the GPS coordinates necessary to check me in. Nice of the waitress to go ahead and trust us on that front. The veggie burger was good, though the patty was a bit dense. I'm curious if it contains any animal products. Food is ok, they've opened for breakfast. Where you need to be careful is when you pay with your credit card. More than once a zero has been added after the number for the tip and you don't know until after you check your account. Not all the wait staff does it, but since you don't know until your card if fully charged your screwed. Just recently I had $60 added to my $30 bill. Not cool! read more
