Ugh. I made the mistake of using this company for my home gas needs. I'm in San Diego county. The door to door sales rep said I could use as much gas as I wanted for a flat rate of $29.99 plus $10 delivery fee from SDG&E. Not true at all. Yes, I pay $29.99 to Sparkenergy, but I pay per therm delivered to me by sdge at a higher rate. My bill always ended up to be more than what I used to pay. So, strike 1. Sales rep lied. Trying to pay my Sparkenergy bill was a nightmare too. I noticed that when I called customer service and dialed 2 for all other states instead of 1 for Texas, is be on hold forever and a day. Hours without an answer. Dial 1, call goes right through. Really?!? When you do get through, you can't make a payment to them. You must call a third party that receives payments for multiple companies. But you can't make an automated payment that way either. The system asks for a 15 digit account number. Spark energy accounts don't have 15 digits. Talk to a rep from the third party and they can't take payments over the phone either. I ended up just mailing checks to them. Hassle, maybe not to some, but for me it was. All of my payments are done electronically and 90% of those are automatic. So, difficult to make a payment, strike 2. After a few months of paying 2 energy bills, 1 to sdge and 1 to spark, the accounts were supposed to merge seemlessly so that is pay just 1 bill. Nope. Another lie. I now had 2 different accounts from sdge, 1 for electricity and 1 for gas delivery. Strike 3. I called to cancel my service in December. Then that was a headache too. I called multiple times to make sure the account was closed and I was all paid up. I wanted to be sure I'd never have deal with them again. 2 months after making my final payment to them and had my sdge account back to normal, what's this?? Another call from spark energy accounting trying to verify my final payment to them!!!! Wtf? Really? They couldn't see my last payment. Luckily, USAA (bank) shows the actual check you send, front/back. I called them back to let them know the exact date I wrote the check out and the date and info on the endorsement side of the check. Strike 4?!? Sure why not. I'll give them 100 strikes if I could. Any pluses to this company? Sure. Customer service was friendly. They did what they could to help. It's not their fault the company is so screwed up. They are just doing their job and I respect that. It's like yelling at someone's dog that's sh*tting on your yard as the owner stands there letting the dog do its thing. Not the dog's fault, it's the owner's fault. So again, customer service good. They did their job to the best of their abilities. I guess that's one more plus; these folks have jobs. Just sucks that spark energy sucks. Save yourself the headache from them and the headache from your spouse getting in your ear like "I told you so!". Thanks for wasting my hard, earned money and time. Way to do a solid for a service member who put their life on the line multiple times to protect you. It feels great to come home in one piece and be ripped off by those you've sworn to protect. Moved in my new flat in September last year, have tried to contact Spark countless times ever since to get the correct bill and clear the balance. I provided them all meter readings and proofs of my move in date. The responses from their customer service are all robotic. It's been 7 months now and I still have no correct bill. Spark kept sending me wrong bills from date prior to me moving in, including late payment charge, admin fees?! Contacted them again and again via email, chat, phone, etc. but never get it sorted! FYI phone calls took me 2+ hours to stay on the queue and dropped in the end! They also had a "calling back" option, but you guess it right, not a single call back whatsoever! I couldn't change the supplier either since Spark refused it because of unclear balance. 0 stars if possible. The sales person kept on telling lies and after her visit, a pair of my roommates' shoes were gone and my IPAD was out of order. I remembered that at the end of her visit, she asked for water and I grabbed a bottle of water to her. But she insisted that she would like to have water from the tap, and I made a wrong decision to had left her alone for around 20 seconds. The women ruined our weekend. I just had Spark Energy knock on my door too. They promised a lower rate and cited a 'new California state law' saying they are deregulating gas for "the gas company" whom the rep said he was sent by and asked for my current bill. He had forms ready to fill out and didn't even mention any name nor could he tell me what his company was about without changing the subject. I'm on the pulse of things and deregulation of a utility would have been on my radar. After pressing he told me his first name only (may have been fake, no name badge like employees from the Gas Company ) and I made an excuse that I don't have a bill. My building is gated and locked, and they found a way in without the Land lady's permission since she doesn't allow sales people in at all. Beware! You will be charged TRIPLE when your contract expires! The 2 or 3 dollars that you may have saved will be greatly eclipsed by the 4-5 hundred dollars that you will be hit with at the end. AND no refunds. They claim to send a letter telling you that the contract has expired, WHAT A JOKE! A bit of junkmail, that they know you will never read! How about a Phone call? How about converting my service back to my original provider after the contract expires?? No way!! That would mean that they can't scam you out of Hundreds of dollars! Their sales tactics are persistent and nasty, just say no and don't let them in your house! They will not go away if you do!!! They come in the middle of winter, WHY? Because they know that most people will let them in, and the "sale" will be made. I was tricked and feel like I was totally scammed first of all it Friday early evening when two girls came to my home and pushy wanted my PGE bill then proceeded to go into my computer and my passwords. Took my phone and where pushing all the buttons when trying to call PGE. Anyways they told me I was signing for a petition to stop pge from raising there gas prices. Not that I was signing up for another company. And now have tried for three days to get it canceled PGE won't help then they give you another number that really is a sister company they tell you to call this other company Sparks. Which I did everything to find out I would possibly get a bill and be responsible for $49.00 and they would not charge me a cancelation fee of $100.00 plus, would give me a gift car to cover $25.00. But would not know anything for one to two months. Whether I was charged or not. Now I am on social security and live in a housing unit. This is really unacceptable. read more

When I initially agreed to enroll with Spark Energy on August 1, 2014 with [name redacted] I was told I would save money on my gas bill. I was told it would take several weeks for my energy provider to process the paper work, and then I would have three business days to cancel service before charges went into effect. When I confirmed costs with my gas provider I found I would end up paying slightly more for gas service. I called to cancel enrollment with Spark Energy, but their offices were closed. I then emailed Spark Energy and received a response via email that my enrollment was cancelled. I sent an email request to cancel enrollment in Spark energy via email on August 1, 2014. On August 6, 2014 I received email confirmation that my enrollment request was cancelled. August 11, 2014 I called Spark Energy customer service and received confirmation from [name redacted ]that enrollment in their service was cancelled. Finally, a letter dated August 7, 2014 arrived in the mail from my service provider confirming my service with Spark Energy's Core Aggregation Transportation service was cancelled. Today (8.14.2014) I received a welcome phone call from Spark Energy wishing to offer me more information about my service. I informed the representative that my service had been cancelled and noted the date. She said she was canceling the service. When I asked for a confirmation number verifying the cancellation, she declined to give one. I asked to speak to her supervisor, but the man who picked up the call would not give his name or a confirmation number for service cancellation. He did however, tell me he could give me a service number to call when offices were open for business. I sent another email to Spark Energy asking them to respond with a confirmation number cancelling enrollment and an estimated date I can expect to receive an official letter stating that my request to cancel enrollment in Spark Energy CAT program was submitted within the agreed upon period. I also stated that I do not expect to receive a bill from their company. I informed them I am filing a complaint with Consumer Affairs and Better Business Bureau and pursuing further action against their company. I want Spark energy to 1. officially cancel my enrollment request, 2. cancel any services I was fraudulently enrolled in, and 3. mail an official letter to that effect. read more

Spark Energy is an absolute scam! I was promised to see a decrease in my gas cost. My past gas bills were relatively low, and with Spark, my bill doubled into 2 separate bills. I terminated my service with them, and now they are coming after me for a supposed $78 I owe them! So basically, they scam on people being predatory to low-income neighborhoods just for us to end up owing more than we could afford in the first place! Shame on you, Spark Energy. These reviews speak volumes about your reputation! ETA: And then these employees who are paid to be SPARK Energy Apologists come on here and tell you it's not a SCAM---look at the reviews. I asked the agent to switch my energy on 3/24/15 and they switched my service early two weeks early. Huge scam!! A guy rang the buzzer and I went down to talk to him. He said since I did not respond to a form from City of Chicago required to fill out, I had been paying penalized rates. And said that he could make me get reimbursement for those overpayment by followimg his guide. In the middle of the process, I realized that he was not from ComEd and was trying to switch me to his company's electricity service- a sales scam. I recorded our conversation and can prove that his advertising was a 100% lie. Disgusting sales practice. I should have had the police take the guy to the jail. read more

If there is a class action lawsuit please include me! Buyer beware!! All the reviews are true. Nicor came to investigate and said we used 12 therms but we were billed for over 200 therms. This company is a scam and should not be able to stay in business. I will also file a report a BBB. Everyone should do the same. I live in a small apartment and only use gas for cooking in the summer. My average bill was always $30-$50 and my bill is $330. I don't know how these people can sleep at night knowing they are stealing from families. I have had 0 problems with Spark. I came from TXU where I was paying over 12 cents and thought I would have to take out a loan just to pay my electric bill. When I moved to my new place, I decided to hook up with Spark. They have saved me a lot of money; I am glad I switched. My last 2 electric bills have been between $60-$70. Unfortunately there is no "zero" star available. On Nov 2014, their sales representatives came knocking our door, ignoring the sign "no trespassing". It was my husband opened the door. He fooled by one of saleswoman's offers, badge and sincerity, he was told that they 1)authorized by SDG&E, 2)could give lower gas prices compared to SDG&E up to $6. In fact : 1) we had to pay $14 more for gas bill plus $8 from SDGE. Through phone, one SDGE associate helped us by tracking our gas payment history, figured out that we have never paying gas over than $18 for entire year. She suggested us to cancel Spark Energy since there is no benefit. As we know, week later, they send us bill $100 for early termination. 2)did not explain about using SDGE gas pipe (that would coming gas bill from SDGE as well), 3) did not explain about free 3 days cancellation, 4) using our cellphone for their business, 5) one associate on the phone was lying to us by saying there is no early cancellation fee at all because we have cancel it on the right timing (during 1 month trial) as long as we pay $14 bill, 6) ignoring the sign, opened the gate by themselves as trespassers. I see I'm not the only one who has been screwed over. I would give 0 stars if I could. I had one of the sales rep come to my door last summer with sales pitch on how I will be able to save money and get a better rate on my gas vs the current rate I was paying with PG&E. I was assurred that my bill will stay the same if not lower, along with the fact that I will not see any major fluccuation with my bill. I've gradually have seen changes but with the last 3-4 months, the pricing has increase to where I'm paying 60-70 dollars/month for gas ALONE (keep in mind my electric AND gas was $62/month before I signed up for Spark Energy). My current bill is where I was like "screw this" as I was being charged $75 for gas alone!!! I called PG&E who confirmed that the fluccuation in my bill was b/c of Spark. Like everyone else, I was told I could lower my gas bill and I felt bad for the girl that was walking door to door so I listened to her. I live with my mom and dad so I thought I could be helping them out but little did I know with this company would do. I signed up and she said I can call within 3 days to cancel free of charge. I called on the day after to cancel and got a confirmation number so I thought that was the end of it. The next week I got a letter and I called to make sure it was cancelled and sure enough they said it was and even checked to make sure. So then I thought that was the end. Two weeks later I got another letter welcoming me to the company services. Once again I called them and they assured me it was cancelled. Yesterday I got a bill of the fixed price of $34.99. I immediately called the company but there was a long wait so I called today and what the lady said was that it was cancelled but the gas company has it confirmed the cancellation until November 19th. So she basically said I was going to get another bill of $34.99 for the month of November. I asked if there was anyway to get it waived or anybody I could talk to to take care of this matter, she said there wasn't but that there was a number I can call to make a payment plan and I said I did not want to pay this because I called within the three days that was given to me to cancel. She said there was no way and I'm currently trying to see who or what I can call to cancel this bill or for me to pay and get a reimbursement for it. I don't understand how this company is run but once someone says I have cancellation number I expect the services to be cancelled this is a complete rip off do not sign up with this company I made the mistake of feeling sympathy for the girl that was walking around and didn't even bother to look at the reviews. I don't know how to put this any other way... BEWARE!!! Up until February I had never heard of Spark Energy... the way I did was via a notice claiming I had owed them over $400! I tried emailing them twice and they claimed their salesperson showed up at my door around the end of November 2018 and that they started their "service" on about mid July 2019 - 8 months later in the Summer! Here's the problem: On the date they said their so called salesperson showed up I was out the early part of that day and no salesperson came to my door later that same day! Which means if one did I could not have signed up with Spark as I was NOT at home at that time! And up until last February I never heard of them. Period! I have seen other complaints along the same line as this one... where their salesperson fraudulently signed these people up! I had to find a way to contact them and close this account (using my name), they supposedly did but wound up sending it and this so called owed amount to collections anyway! I have since joined a class action suite against them! They are a major PITA to deal with... they are supposed to take a percentage out of your/my PG and E bill but claim first that PGE only sent one payment and then later two! Nothing adds up at all! My problems started when I first signed up for gas and electric. The rep who came to my door did not mention there would be a cancellation fee ($100 per account) if I were to end service before a contact term was up. I found this out when I switched to a different energy provider for a better deal. I had initially paid the electric fee, but was hit with the second fee. After switching back to Spark to duck the second fee, I was promised a refund of the first fee. I requested that refund be credited to my account. A month later, half of my refund was credited back. I called two separate times thereafter to track the rest of the refund, and it finally came as a gift card despite my multiple requests to credit the account. Fast forward a couple of months. I am moving from the apt, and Spark says you can have the cancellation fee waived if you provide a copy of the new lease to them. I follow their directions and sent the new lease and get a confirmation the fee will be waived. A week later, I get a bill for two cancellation fees in the mail. I called Spark again, and the representative tried to tell me the bill was the remaining balance of my account. I always paid my bills on time and in full, and doubted that a remaining balance would be the exact cost of the cancellation fees. I told the rep this and upon her digging a little deeper, she found that the billing department had not processed my waiver, despite having sent me confirmation of this. My recommendation is to avoid Spark energy at all costs. They seems to prey on people being to confused or lazy to challenge their false claims. read more

I just got the biggest gas bill I ever had. I called Spark Energy to see if there was a mistake. They said my contract had expired so my rate was increased -- by 4x what our local provider charges! They "said" they sent me a contract renewal in the regular US mail but I never received any such mail. They claimed to have called my home, which they did not! And even though they have my email address, they chose not to send an email. I guess it's more convenient to claim they made contact in a way you cannot trace so they can more easily scam you into higher prices. I agree with the other reviewers that they operate in a shady way. I also canceled my account with them and I would recommend that everyone else does too because it's only a matter of time before you end up in the same situation. read more

Total rip off. The sales person said it would save me money. Stated that the rate would be lower than Pge. Turns out they charge .69 per kW hr when Pge was charging an average of .31. Where was the savings? That's more than double what I would have been paying! False representation to say the least. Then they offered me a contract at .49 per kW when I said I was unhappy. ??? I signed up a sixth month plan where I was told by the sales representative that I would be charged 9.9c for the period. Two months later I was being charged 13.3 c. I didnt notice this for 4 months and when I call I am being told that it was a flexible rate and not a fixed rate. My rating is in the middle since I haven't actually received any new bills from my electric delivery with prices from Spark, the provider. As an aside I'll say that for this reason, I'm confused about why there are so many complaints here about "spark failing to deliver bills", since, as far as I understand, they don't write bills since they work through a distributor. Anyways, on my way into my apartment today a Spark employee was in my building speaking to my neighbor. He came on the basis of saying that someone in the building had complained about the rates, to some degree so much that they were going to be provided with a huge gift card by ComEd. So at first basis it didn't seem like sales, since at a matter he was responding to some client, and so on. I'll add that he wasn't wearing a suit, or holding a clipboard, or any of that. He basically looked like a guy who was going to check your meter. Yeah so basically he then said he had to see my bill to figure out if the provider had turned. Umm, I feel like an idiot a little bit since within this information alone there seems to be a discrepancy. 1: So, fellow tenant X has supposedly switched to Spark. That should have no effect on me. Why would he need to talk to me? The only explanation I can find is that since the ComEd rates were so high, it was like he was doing me a favor I guess? Figured if tenant X was paying too much that I was too. Whatever. 2: You need to check my bill to see if I have switched. But since I don't know you, or your company, and tenant X doesn't pay for my electricity, I've never spoken to you and, of course, the provider would not have changed on my bill. I can't really find any explanation here other than that he lied to me. Yeah so then I proceeded on some basis that I had to change to Spark since it was something going on with my building. Hmm. That may be possible. I don't know really, can a building have more than one provider of electricity? Not sure if that's possible. It very well might be. Second. There is supposedly only one gas meter in my building. Which explains why it's so cold. And why I pay gas to my landlord rather than directly to any company. The rest of the transaction really got me nervous since I felt I was effectively signing up for service rather than "checking on the status of service" or what not. So I signed up for Spark, apparently I get some fixed rate for two months then have to revisit contract. Good thing I'm leaving in that time anyways. Now we get to the worst mistake, which was totally mine. The bills are actually written to my roommate. Uh, yeah so I had no business in dealing with this thing, and should have left it alone. I opened X bill then, with my roommates name on it which is possibly illegal and yeah. Then I actually falsified his name as I went through it, a number of times. Since on many levels I thought that nothing was really going on. The reason I bring this up, it's embarrassing, but. In the process I found that my roommate had not been paying the electric bills. The bill I picked up was actually a notice of cancellation. Yeah. with close to $400 on it. Fucking utilities. And fucking stupid roommates. They got her to sign up and when we called the rep (Amanda) she did not answer and her voicemail was full. How convenient. And when I called the main company it was already closed for the day. My Spark Energy experience was very unlike the other reviews posted. The sales representative was very polite and courteous. She listened to the concerns I had with using another supplier. My representative did not promise me savings, she simply explained that I would be price protected at a rate that would be lower than my average overall for the next year, which proved to be true. When I moved to a different location, my services were free to cancel, just like the representative explained. I really appreciated that my plan uses 100% green energy unlike other companies that say they're green but are actually only partially green. I recommend Spark Energy. I loved having the peace of mind knowing exactly what I would be charged each month. read more

Over the last few weeks, I have been receiving DOZENS of robocalls that say I have been overcharged by a energy supplier and I could get a rebate check plus discounts off my gas and electric bill. I finally decided to play along with them. They asked me for my zip code and then told me I was paying 9.5 cents a KW and they could lower it to 6.99 cents a KW. I told him that I was on a rare Com Ed real time pricing plan that has rates change each hour and was only paying around 3.5 cents a KW on average. I asked him who he worked for and he said Spark Energy. I told him I had received at least 50 calls from them and could they please put me on a do not call list. He hung up. read more

Being so (rightfully) wary of online phishing scams and such, I think I forgot what a real-life scam looks like face to face. That is absolutely what this company does - scam people into believing that their energy company is changing "suppliers" and they need to sign up for new services, with an enticing "lower rate." EVERYTHING about their sales rep Zachary was sketchy - he stumbled over his words, told us he only got four hours of sleep the previous night (thanks for the info?), yawned rudely in our faces and reeked of stale cigarettes. It wasn't presented as a choice, an option we could take - he repeatedly stated we needed to do this in order to keep our lights on. 30 seconds after he left I began reading other reviews and realized what a horrible mistake I'd made, so I called the company to rescind my application. They gave me a verification number, but I plan on following up tomorrow to confirm that my application was withdrawn. I also put the cancelation notice he gave me in the mail, because I am NOT leaving them with any opportunities to say I didn't cancel. This company is absolutely useless. The customer service is extremely poor. I have been chasing them to close my account for almost two months. I was informed that my gas closing meter reading was not provided by my new supplier - Octopus. The closing meter reading was resent by Octopus on the 17th November, 8th December and the 15th December 2020. I have been on the line again today for almost 1hr to confirm when my credit balance would be transferred to my account. Please run from this supplier. They are absolutely useless! read more

UPDATE: HEMMORRHOIDS - STAY AWAY! Not sure why Yelp moved my review into "currently not recommended" section but I would like to make an update on my post. On 2/9/2018 I called this morons again and was assured that my name will be taken of the collection list. I also requested to speak with the supervisor and was told that he will call me back in 24-48 hours. Today is 2/14/2018, which is 5 days later, NO ONE bothered to call me back. HEMMORRHOIDS - STAY AWAY! When Spark's reps knocked on my door for the third time I signed up with them - felt like our local energy provider EverSourse in MA can use some competition. Man was that a mistake... I was a Customer with the Spark Energy for almost 2 years. Always on time with my payments, never owe them a penny. The problems began when I signed up for the second year. The new price was lower but they continued overcharging me for another half of the year. Not a huge difference in a price, just annoying. Had to call them several times, speak with the supervisor... until they fixed the issue. But that was NOTHING compare to what was coming: I moved out of my rental (the owner sold the condo) into the area where Spark does not provide services. I called them to move service, and was told that they do not provide the service in my new ZIP code, therefore, the "Early termination fee of $100" wont be applied. I paid my final bill and forgot about it... for a month. A month later they sent me a bill in the amount of $100 stating that I owe them an "Early Termination fee". I called again. Spoke with the Customer Service, gave her a reference # of my previous conversation and was reassured that THIS time everything is done, I don't owe them anything... A month later I got a another bill for a $100. I called AGAIN. Spoke with the Customer Service, gave her a reference number and was reassured that THIS TIME everything is done properly, I don't owe them anything. To make long story short I called them 5 times in the past 8 month, spoke with 5 different representatives trying to resolve the SAME issue. Each of them reassured me that the issue was fixed and I don't owe them anything. TODAY, 2/9/2018, eight month after I moved out of my old apartment, I received a letter from a third party Collection Agency stating that I owe $100 to Spark Energy. YOU MUST BE KIDDING ME! I will be contacting Federal Trade Commission and will make sure I post review about this SCAM on every site I can possibly think of so they don't get any business in MA or anywhere else. If you have anyone knock on your door from Spark energy. Don't answer it. I have told by the representative that if I sign up with Spark, I will get $100 reward dollars every month. I have to call three times to get it done. In the postcard I got from the rep. has never mention about shopping reward. When my reward account set up. I have to choose from the vendor on the web. I can only use $5 on my dollars on the $50 gift card and I have to pay $45.00. I called again, requested to speak to supervisor. He is rude, no empathy, bad customer service. I inform him I am a disable person have medical issue, request a visa gift card or check for amount show in my account. He stated it can't be done, I can cancelled my account, he can do it right now. This is big misrepresentation big time on Spark energy. He keep saying it is a third parties issue. Well, if Spark hired the third party, Spark still responsible because Spark hired them. If there is 0, I would definitely give 0 rating. I was with Spark Energy for the last two years. They changed my tariff plans twice without my consent. Last month, I left Spark as their charges are higher than other energy suppliers and call waiting time is over an hour! Seriously! Now, the most horrible part, there was a mix up on the meter reading with current provider and Spark and Spark send me the final bill which was way too high. I called Spark and their account manager said sorry and he said he will take my meter reading from the new supplier and will resend me a new bill. In the meantime, I called my current provider and they said they are working on it. I start getting emails and texts to pay the balance to Spark. I called them again and they told me not to worry and wait for my final bills. I emailed them to stop sending me the old bills and text as it's very annoying. Now, the most interesting part, I get a call from Opos Limited a debt collection agency threating me to give the money ASAP. I was really surprised why they called me. They said SPARK passed my details and ask them to collect the money. I had the reference number and all the emails and chat screenshots where they said SPARK will send me a new bill. I didn't pay and called back to SPARK and they told me the Final bill is ready and they will send me within 24 hours. I asked them why the debt collection agency called me? And she said she doesn't know, and she said she can see the notes about my billing dispute. So, clearly, there is an INTERNAL COMMUNICATION GAP. The OPOS Limited called me today and said to pay the new total. I PAID them, and the guys said, all done and ensure me that I am not going to have any more call or text from SPARK. And, now the miracle happened. I am still getting the TEXT and Emails to pay the Bill. Because of their faults, my credit score dropped. I have never missed a single payment just because I want to make sure my credit score is excellent all the time. In my life, I have never experienced such a thing. It takes peace from my life. I wish I never had SPARK on my life. If you are planning to switch to SPARK be careful, I said Be careful. And, if you are already with SPARK, I would suggest switch your providers, you are paying too high. I am paying only HALF of the amount to my current provider. read more
