If there is 0, I would definitely give 0 rating. I was with Spark Energy for the last two years. They changed my tariff plans twice without my consent. Last month, I left Spark as their charges are higher than other energy suppliers and call waiting time is over an hour! Seriously! Now, the most horrible part, there was a mix up on the meter reading with current provider and Spark and Spark send me the final bill which was way too high. I called Spark and their account manager said sorry and he said he will take my meter reading from the new supplier and will resend me a new bill. In the meantime, I called my current provider and they said they are working on it. I start getting emails and texts to pay the balance to Spark. I called them again and they told me not to worry and wait for my final bills. I emailed them to stop sending me the old bills and text as it's very annoying. Now, the most interesting part, I get a call from Opos Limited a debt collection agency threating me to give the money ASAP. I was really surprised why they called me. They said SPARK passed my details and ask them to collect the money. I had the reference number and all the emails and chat screenshots where they said SPARK will send me a new bill. I didn't pay and called back to SPARK and they told me the Final bill is ready and they will send me within 24 hours. I asked them why the debt collection agency called me? And she said she doesn't know, and she said she can see the notes about my billing dispute. So, clearly, there is an INTERNAL COMMUNICATION GAP. The OPOS Limited called me today and said to pay the new total. I PAID them, and the guys said, all done and ensure me that I am not going to have any more call or text from SPARK. And, now the miracle happened. I am still getting the TEXT and Emails to pay the Bill. Because of their faults, my credit score dropped. I have never missed a single payment just because I want to make sure my credit score is excellent all the time. In my life, I have never experienced such a thing. It takes peace from my life. I wish I never had SPARK on my life. If you are planning to switch to SPARK be careful, I said Be careful. And, if you are already with SPARK, I would suggest switch your providers, you are paying too high. I am paying only HALF of the amount to my current provider. read more

You would think that a company providing such an important service that I assumed was highly regulated would have to be reputable. Who would think that a utility company could be such a fraud? I am on SSI which is stretched as far as it can go and this clown comes in promising that I will save money on my gas bill. So my first bill comes and it is a bit cheaper but not by very much. Then I get a bill from my regular provider for the same period. It is a "transportation fee" which was in the same amount as the bill from Spark Energy. In other words I am being charged twice for one service. They know that they are gouging the poor when they are selling this to you. They are now door knocking California area, wearing bright orange vest, said he was with pg&e and asked to see my electric bill because as a savings plus customer I would receive $100 a month in free coupons and all he had to do was verify my account. I showed him my bill, he called someone on his cell phone and said he was representing me. Next he told me that I would receive a call from the company and all I had to do was confirm who I was. I was then called by a call center in Arizona 1 602 778 7500, the telemarketer introduced themselves as a representative of Spark energy, she asked if I would agree to the terms and services agree upon by the agent. Don't think, just run away!! I must be getting old. I thought I was a cagey New Yorker but I got scammed the old fashioned way: I was lied person-to-person on the phone. My gas rate more than TRIPLED. This is not a typo. They promise you on the phone that your rates will go down and they quote some numbers and all you care is whether you're going to pay more or less, and they say your rate will go down. Or maybe they say it like this, "You'll pay less..." (cough, cough)...while coughing they say under their breath, "...than what I want you to pay". But know this: once you cancel, it takes 1-2 billing cycles for them to bleed you 1-2 billing cycles more before they detach their fangs from your throat. And don't forget about their cancellation fee if you want to cancel too soon. How can they do business this way? My theory: in this age of fake relationships through "social" media and rampant "authenticity" online (ie. people being genuinely nasty with impunity), Spark and its ilk hit upon a brilliant idea: hire the nicest, calmest, friendliest-sounding people who are willing to lie through their teeth to rip you off. People are so starved for "genuine" relationships, they fall for it like flies. Caveat emptor! Especially the elderly or those on fixed incomes, please do NOT fall for this scam! I can afford the financial hit, and by God's mercy, it's not winter, because if I paid TRIPLE the gas price in the middle of winter here in the northeast...I don't know what I would have done. Each time, I ask them for information on paper, or a website that I can go to, and each time they just start going on their sales pitch. Each time, I send them away. They just showed up again, and did the same thing *again*. The SAME alarm bells go off in my head each and every time. Accidentally signed up for spark energy, sales lady misrepresented herself. She never said she was spark energy, and she kept saying she was part of a program to help lower pge bill. After I sign up, I went to the website n found out the sparks energy n pge is in no way affiliated with each other and the program she was talking about was actually going to cost me twice what I usually paid. Anyways short story long, called the customer service line and I had the service cancel. To my suprise, the lady on the customer service line was very helpful. She didn't make it hard at all. She was very helpful and she even apologize for sales rep. Took about 5 minutes. I told the lead associate that I had talked to another one of their representatives just a week ago and wasn't interested. Spark energy doesnt even deserve a star. If it could go in the negatives, Centerpoint and Spark Energy would both deserve those spots. I was given the round about of talking with both companies back and forth and they were putting blame on each other, etc., etc. It's like they couldn't talk to each other and i had to relay information, waste my time and re-explain my entire story to new reps each time ! And when Spark Energy did, they had a "special" assigned centerpoint rep who just reads all the notes from all the other reps I've spoken to. It was the most inconvenient experience and the worst customer service I've ever had. Here was the situation for those brave souls that would like to get a kick out of it or maybe even relate! I've been experiencing my lights flickering since January. I also realized that my electric bills have been really high compared to my usual usage of less than 600khw. It was averaging around 1000kwh! I just thought I was either cooking a lot more, using my stove, living on the 3rd floor, my apt isnt insulated very well, etc., etc. I didnt quite understand why my bill was so ridiculously high. I even gave Spark Energy a call and they confirmed that my meter reading was right and that I was being charged the right amount. Then throughout May, my electricity just kept going out. It wasnt until memorial weekend during May where I woke up in the middle of the night super sweaty because I realized that my electricity had gone out and my fan was off. I called Centerpoint and she told me to go outside to my breaker and then when I did, she realized that my meters were switched with my neighbors. SO this whole time, my neighbor was probably thinking their bill was really low and I had been paying high amounts for their bill. One thing I need to mention is that my April to May bill was $373.99 for using 2998 kwh. Can someone PLEASE explain to me how that makes any sense when Im in a one bedroom apartment and I barely use any electricity or even AC?! The rep I was speaking to told me "it was normal" because of my average usage the past couple of months. After even explaining to her that my meters were switched, it's like they were all incompetent! They wouldnt even credit the 2 $45 TDU service charges they charged me for me calling to get reps sent out to check out my meter. It's ridiculous because they were looking at my meter but it wasn't really my meter so why should I be charged? Ugh. I eventually got fed up with explaining my situation and waiting for the reps to read all the notes, so I had to talk directly to one of the managers. Ms. Cornado was not very helpful at all. She tells me she'll call me back the next day and that never happened. I felt like a headless chicken running around! I had to go througha painful process talking to different reps, explaining my story, getting misunderstood, given attitude, no resolutions, etc. What's even worse was that I refused to pay almost $400 for the May bill and my option was to put my account payment on hold because I didnt want it to draft automatically from my credit card. Spark energy wouldnt even let me stop payment on my credit card or skip payment. When they thought they figured things out, they ended up re-adjusting my bill higher by ADDING my real usage to the usage I was charged when it should have been SUBTRACTED. So I had to go through more weeks of waiting. Spark removed my hold and the only option they gave me was to pay the full amount and then get credited later. I told them that was not going to happen because I know the usage is incorrect and it's not right. The rep gave me the option to get an extension with the finance dept for a week. I was hoping that Centerpoint would get their act together and send in my adjustments to Spark so that the billing would be correct. Well this never happened and Im still calling Centerpoint & Spark to figure out the details of my adjustments and how they were able to get the numbers for the total adjustment. What a big mess and a waste of my time. This was not worth being put on hold, waiting hours for answers and for the reps to talk to their supervisors, for the reps to call spark energy and confirm information, etc. In conclusion, my real usage for May was 307kwh NOT 2998kwh like they claimed I used! I'm not providing more details to this because I am so drained and tired of the amount of crap I had to go through with both these companies. Why cant Centerpoint and Spark have a dedicated rep to talk to their customers??? Theres no efficiency in talking to different reps EACH time and having to explain your story over and over again. These smart meters they claim are not that great. How can they mix up meters AND figure out how to adjust the correct amount to me when it's been tampered with as well? ugh. When I was in the process of moving out, I called Spark's customer service to request a cancellation of my electricity. The customer service rep "ensured" me that on the 28th of August my electricity would be shut off. Come to find out a month later I am still being charged for the electricity of the apartment that I no longer occupy. I called Spark's customer service to resolve this issue. A new rep informed me that the previous rep did not actually process the paperwork to shut off the electricity therefore I was still being charged. She said that she would process the paperwork and that it will take a few days before the extra charges would be removed from my account balance. The rep also stated that my account would be on hold until the changes were made. I can't even remove my automatic payment option on my account. I called yet again to see if there were any changes since I was still receiving emails about my bill. The charges are still on my account as I write this review. I don't think that any customer/patron/human being should have to wait this long for an issue to be resolved when it was the company's mistake to begin with. Every time I call Spark Energy, a rep gives me a runaround with some kind of excuse that he/she is probably reading off of a script that he/she received on the first day of training. Very unprofessional sales people. The man startled me while approaching me after I had entered my car. I noticed him in my side mirror and quickly locked the door. He refused to leave when I shouted "Go Away!" (I was startled by a strange man standing so close to my vehicle on a very narrow strip between the driver's side and my neighbor's fence: not really a place anyone, including invited guests, would ever stand or walk.) DO NOT USE SPARK! I also has the same experience of a salesman coming to my door and not fully understanding what he was selling (my fault) and signed up anyways. Things were going fine until I was incorrectly billing for more than one billing cycle. I brought this to Spark's attention and their customer service was responsive, but, correctly my rate took 3 billing cycles and months to receive my reimbursement check (which they said would send me in 2 billing cycles). This happened late August 2016. It is February 2017 and I have still not received my reimbursement. I don't think I ever will. I check in with them regularly and I get the same response... the billing dept is working on it and your check is in the mail! DO NOT USE! read more

Spark Energy is nothing but a scam. I had a girl come knock on my door saying she was working with PG&E and told me the some crap about PG&E raising their summer rates and she was there to sign me up for a program to save me money. She something about it being a $4.95 flat rate per month and plus 69 cents per therm. It took me halfway through the form she was filling out with my information on it before I realized it was a huge scam since the Sparks bill would be more than triple my monthly gas bill. When I demanded the form with my information with on it so I can mail the form in myself after I did more research first, she got very rude and said that the only way to sign up was to complete the form with her there. When I asked for a business card with her supervisor name and number on it, she said she wasn't able to give me that information at all. That was the final red flag for me, so I demanded her to give me the form back again. She refused! It took maybe 5 minutes of me yelling at her to give it to me, she finally gave in and gave it to me. I have been with Spark for about 6 years. I will say this about them; they will get electricity to your place of residence. You will be able to turn on lights and other appliances in your home. Other than that DO NOT expect anything more from the employees and staff at Spark Energy. For the past 6 years i have been on their automatic draft plan, so I have never been remotely late with any payment. When my contract expired I must have missed the letter because my rate SHOT up to 20 cents per killowatt. Ok my fault I suppose, so called in to renew and get my rate back down. They informed me that the ONLY rate they would offer is over 11.00 cents. Which is 2 cents more than most other places. When asked about a 6 month option; Oh Im sorry your account is available for that. Any other lower rates? No sorry no other option. Do you all care that you might lose a long term customer? No sorry not our problem. In closing Spark will get you electricity, but not much else. A complete FAIL at customer service and kindness. read more

There needs to be a "SCAM, DO NOT USE" section of Yelp. I signed up when a sales person came to my door with a promise of the possibility of less expensive gas and they stated that they were a "green company". I figured why not? If the first bill I got from them was higher than usual I figured I could cancel. After the first bill came I didn't see any major differences in price and quickly forgot about signing up. Six months later I got a bill that had a $250 service fee on top of the gas bill I normally get. I called customer service and for 2 days was put on hold indefinitely. Finally I decided to call the SALES department and got someone on the phone the first ring and was able to cancel my service. The gentleman waived my $50 cancelation fee but said I would still owe the $250. He couldn't explain what the fee was for, only that it was "a standard service fee". Not paying it is not an option because the fee shows up on your normal gas utility bill. Meaning, if you don't pay it then your gas gets shut off. This company is a SCAM, avoid at all cost!!!! read more

They claim to save you money by lowering your rate. Their rate for gas was only slightly lower than SDG&E, but with their monthly fee combined with the line charge from your utility provider they actually cost WAY more (not to mention a $100 termination fee if you change your mind). Spark supplied my gas only when I first moved into my property in June 2019. The customer service was good initially so I asked them to supply my electricity on the 11/12/2019. When my first bill came, I also got a bill from my previous electricity provider (Utilita). When I queried with utilita who was providing my electricity, they confirmed the national database stated it was still them. I got back to spark who said they had the wrong meter on their system which was creating charges. I provided evidence of the correct meter twice and also did a burns test to confirm that they have the wrong meter. They have since stopped charging me for electricity but have not deducted the electricity charges from my bill and have given no written correspondance about what they are doing to resolve the complaint or stuck to the timescales they have given me. I have wasted hours of my time when they only need to do simple maths and communicate with me. Absolutely horrendous service! read more

A rep, we will call him "M." from Spark Energy! To begin with... he reeked of cigarette smoke. Ew. Then he started asking to see our ComEd electric bill and Peoples Gas bill, which we showed him. He then proceeded to tell us his sales pitch about how Spark would save us all this $$$ and we can just sign up now on the spot etc. It was all very exciting at first, I thought- "ok, let's save money!" Nope. With his chicken scratch handwriting, he scrawled up my application (which he never actually had me sign...). He failed to mention the $5 monthly fee-- and he also said "your NEXT bill will show all the money saved!" Wrong. The next bill was still the same as usual, and when I called Spark to talk about it, they ended up sending me on a wild goose chase to the other two companies (ComEd and Peoples Gas) to "blame" them. Also- we live in a 4 flat. We asked M. if the other people in our building signed on, and he lied and said oh yes the two ladies upstairs did! I asked the two ladies upstairs after--They hadn't. It may seem appealing, or even look like you will save money. You won't-- the customer service is awful whenever there is an issue, and their sales rep's aren't honest. If you have a question about any shady door-to-door salespeople, I would encourage you to check out the Citizens Utility Board of Illinois, and check your facts before signing up. I am going to reiterate all of the other reviews -- I wish I had read them sooner: -Spark Energy will jack up your rates if you do not sign up for a new contract. My rates fluctuated significantly -- often more than double their advertised rates. -I do not recall receiving notice that my contract was up -- they claim they did. I'm sure it is something that is easily missed in the mail. Why would they make it noticeable if they can then charge you double? -When speaking to them on the phone about this: they quoted me a new price, but when it was time to verbally commit to that price, it had somehow changed (going up one cent per kWh -- which I have now learned adds up quickly). The customer service agent claimed she was only human and had 'made a mistake.' -On top of all that, I was sent a bill for two months, because they had a 'system error.' Getting a double electric bill in the middle of the summer is not pleasant. Energy providers should not be allowed to operate in this scamming fashion. Avoid. They came to our door and told us the 'contract' was totally legit and that we were locked in at the rate of $0.399 per unit for 12 months. We signed up because it seemed like a great deal - even though we were skeptical. The first month we were charged at the given rate, but when we received the bill for the following month, we were charged at $1.399 per unit!! Thinking they clearly made a mistake, we called them to get it corrected. They told us the 'contract' we had signed wasn't an actual contract - to which we replied a 'contract' is consent between both parties. They agreed to look at our account, but we still had to pay the $100+ bill in order to keep our gas on for the month. The following month they made the same 'mistake'. We quickly switched back to Columbia Gas - where there are no scams. But after three months, they still have yet to reimburse us $200 worth of billing! This is a scam! I assumed that my bill would be $5-$10 as my gas bill has never been over $30 in al the years I have been at my residence. Welp, what I got was a year of $60-$100 bills!!!!! some months we were away on winter trips, and I never received anything less than $70. About two month before my contract was due to expire I received a notice in the mail saying they were going to put my account on a month to month variable. I forgot to respond, honestly forgetting about the letter. Then a month before I received a call offering a "deal" at 4.72. When I addressed my concerns, the representative regarding the high price she stated that they charge low flat rate but the gas company still charges their fees :(. So my question was why to get them if I am not saving money in the end. She says "well you are still saving on the actual gas itself." 2 Reps came to our house in Lynwood about a month ago and asked to see our Gas bill stating they were working for the Southern CA Gas Company. We asked why they wanted the Gas Bill and they gave their speech on lowering our gas bill. We noticed that they had at least 40 gas bills that had collected from neighbors on a clipboard. To make a long story shorter. When we confronted them and asked to see a Gas Company ID and about having our neighbors bills in their possession they just walked to our next door neighbor. We signaled her not to talk to them and called the cops from outside. They heard this and one took off in the car and the other jumped the fence and disappeared as the police pulled up. The police said they had complaints about these guys and actually cornered off the block for a little bit and was unable to find them. Guess what? Just today 2 other reps showed up and I old them the story. They said they weren't doing anything wrong. But took off again when I said I would call the police if they didn't leave the neighborhood. They sure were able to run really fast back to their car and peel out. Why do they run off when threatened with the Police!!!! BEWARE!!!! UPDATE 3 months later: We have since found out why they were collecting bills from our neighbors. Several neighbors have since told us that a few weeks after the Reps had took a copy of their Gas Bill... they started receiving bills from Spark Energy even though they never signed up. Hah! You guys are tricky...salesman comes to my door acting like they have nothing to sell, but instead allowing me to take part in some sort of legal initiative designed to save Californians money. I almost bought the BS, then they said they were calling PG&E for verification, and called sparks instead! The salesman moved quick as he saw me googling the company, the sparks rep then called my phone to seal the deal. This is the email I sent to Spark Energy customer service: I need to know how to cancel your services. My (underage) daughter signed up on my behalf (without my knowledge or concent) while I was gone. She told me two reps carrying binders showed up on the front step while she was outside with the dog, saying they were from PG&E, wanting to lock in a lower rate before rates go up. She told me she tried to say no but they were very pushy and wouldn't go away. (I told her that she should have called the police) She finally gave them my information just to get rid of them. I decided to give SPARK ENERGY the benefit of the doubt, thinking maybe there will be a little savings on my bill. No such luck. I am writing you in the hopes that you will make this right so we don't have to involve the BBB, or anyone else, due to the shady way your employees get customers(victims) Not to mention the strong arm tactics your salesmen used on a minor female home alone. Please let me know what information you need from me, for you to correct this wrong. read more

Issues: fabricating information & misrepresentation about being associated with our current utility company, Eversource A door-to-door salesman with an ID for Spark Energy came to our house and said that he was going to follow-up as usual for an annual assessment and optimization--as they did last year--about our energy provider. He showed me an Eversource bill on a clipboard with an amount due of ~$145 (this was definitely not my bill--see below). False statement #1: There are third party energy sales people in our neighborhood periodically, but this was the first visit we had from Spark Energy. I told him I wasn't interested, but he would not leave. I pointed out that he didn't work for Eversource. False statement #2: He said that he worked "with" Eversource--as far as I know, Spark Energy has no official affiliation with Eversource. False statement #3: He said that he just had basic information about the houses in our neighborhood, specifically our balances. I ask what ours was since he said that this was information that he had. He said he didn't know. I pointed out that if he actually knew that info, he'd realize why we'd have little reason to bother switching energy providers. He was confused why. I told him we have a negative balance with Eversource. He seemed puzzled and asked how. I pointed out that our house has solar panels (which he didn't notice or know about) and have generated more electricity than we have used, thus the negative balance. This was a cold call in the purest sense. He didn't even pay attention to my house. At that point, he went on his way to other homes in my neighborhood. read more

Just a horrible and scandalous company. Im actually very surprised nobody sued the company. My family never signed up for this awful service and now they want yo charge us early termination fee $100. We moved and tried to change the billing address after 11 months, and their answer is they went ahead and cancelled our account and is forcing us to pay termination fee. AFTER 11 MONTHS!!! Which we waited to avoid the termination fee, and for something we never signed up for. After reading all of these reviews how they forced their service, i believe it to be true. read more

I would give this company 0 star if I could. There's been a lot of sale reps from Texan electrical companies coming to solicit around my area lately. Just today there was a lady named Nazhae Harris from this company, who convinced my naive, unauthorized, trusting younger sister (at age 15, btw) to sign an enrollment form, claiming that our electric bill will decrease once we join. First of all, that is conniving, conning, unethical and downright illegal behavior (and most likely this company's policies allow and encourage such actions) to authorize such a process. My sister is not even legally authorized to sign for anyone's behalf. Secondly, the statement that it will lower our electric bills is also bollocks. It is utter nonsense. It is ALWAYS cheaper to get electricity locally than across the country. The straw that broke the camel's back though? The rep's number given to us is FAKE. The name she gave us is probably fake, too. But keep your enrollment forms - especially if it's the WRONG person who authorized activation. You will need it if a lawsuit is needed in the future. Do NOT believe them. Do NOT sign anything with them. After you guys call the company to cancel your service, make sure to inform Better Business Bureau too. This is NOT the kind of business that should thrive. It's one thing to be callous once in a while, but it's another to have this occur repeatedly, as evidenced by the sheer amount of negative reviews on here. read more

In my rented apartment building room. Some creepy young dudes and creepy young girls are always knocking door so loud as if they are a cops with judge's letter to arrest my family for something. They would never tell us who they are or why and what for. Just knocks the door and says" let me see your comed bill". I once called 911 for this becos these scammers would not leave despite being asked to do so. Well, I never knew them until today when there was another loud knock, thought it was my janitor . Once opened, there were 2 ladies this time bit cleaner and they had SPARK tags on their coat. Tells me all tenants in this building qualifies for saving on our electronic bill. They are actually lying cos they are there to have you switch to their electronic company and will try to fool you. They would ask me to show them my comed bill. I didn't cos they will switch it for me if I give them my comed info. These are pure scammers and must be arrested for tresspass harassment! read more

DO NOT USE SPARK ENERGY. Once the contract expires, they jack you up to 4x spot rates. There should be negative stars for these scam artists
