I have lived in town for nearly 2 years when I just needed some spare keys. I noticed right away how clean and nicely laid out their exterior displays were done. When I strolled in I had no real expectation. I waited for the cashier to finish up. She repeatedly asked if minded waiting and assured me she'd be free in a moment. So I did one of my favorite pastime-- window shopping. For a relatively small space it's well stocked with just about anything one might find in need of Of a special note I saw a corkboard at the front area by the checkout area positively covered with Polaroid Instagram pictures of dogs who've visited over the last 5 years or so. I regretted not bringing my own dog Stella. I must say that this store is a real hidden gem in Stoneham. Feels old school charming with up to date tech. Lindsay is a real asset to their operation. On a day filled with terribly upsetting news, her bright smile and boundless spirit truly made me feel a little normal again. I'll go back whenever I decide on my indoor paint scheme or need a gadget or "whoseywatzit". They'll be sure to have it! read more

Typical ace hardware but staff shows consistently high customer service. The other hardware store that was up the street and closed for good had all sorts of older stock or unusual items that this Ace doesn't have. Everyone is entitled to an opinion and may have different experiences. But heere's mine: Thanksgiving Weekend 2022...two friends and I were in Stoneham for the Greater Boston Stage Company's production of "Little Women, The Musical" and we had some time to kill since we had planned for possible bad traffic along the way. We ended up milling around the theater area to browse. Voilà Spartan Paint & Supply! The guys inside were very welcoming, personable, helpful, and kind and it was open and it was warm inside. We were not looking to buy anything, but all three of us ended up finding something that we needed and all made purchases. I skipped the complimentary fresh popcorn, but I did score a free calendar on the way out the door! Terrific store...so much variety...impressive collection of YETI products, too. Definitely worth the trip on its own. An awesome experience. read more

Regrettable customer service in my experience, despite what the older reviews say. The only people skill many of the employees seem to have mastered is the dead stare, and it can be pretty chilling when directed at you! The employees at Round's Hardware down the street, while not warm and fuzzy, are much more professional. read more

Was looking for a Benjamin Moore paint dealer in the Stoneham area and ended up at Spartan Hardware. Great selection of paint and color chips. Staff was friendly and the store has it's own parking lot right in front of the store. I'll be back. read more

Finally!!! I've been struggling to track down Benjamin Moore paint samples, and finally someone has come through, without acting like I'm a crazy person for wanting to test out a color before painting the whole room. We were greeted when we walked in, the staff at the paint desk was awesome AND the price was better than the other two places I checked, including Benjamin Moore direct. It was my first trip here, but I'll be back, and if they're always that friendly then it'll be my go to. read more

I live in the area and have gone here out of desperation a total of probably 20 times over the last 5 years. The prices are legit double in some cases compared to big box stores. The older guys know what they are talking about, however, most times only the college kids are available and don't know. Just a poor overall customer experience and I feel like I've been had when I look at my receipt each time. I much prefer Rounds Hardware up the street except the parking there is terrible. Your best best bet though is Home Depot or Lowe's about 7 minutes away and seek out that one knowledgeable guy who is wandering the aisles. I know it can be painful but for the most part I don't need help, I don't need tips, I want the best product at the best price immediately with a return policy that is top notch. read more

This is my go-to hardware store in Stoneham. It has a wide open parking lot that's easy to get in and out of. The isles are orderly and easily marked. A little cramped, but a great local hardware store. They call it a "Paint and Supply" store, but really it's a hardware store with a decent paint section. Good selection of all kinds of things you need for your home. This place has saved my butt on a number of occasions. One time I needed a plunger (!) ASAP and was able to get one here - in and out the door under 60 seconds. Awesome. read more

This is pretty much my favorite store ever! I know almost nothing about hardware (my husband is the builder in the family), but every time I've gone into the store people have been helpful and ready to answer my questions. They're never condescending, even when I ask dumb questions, and unlike people at Home Depot, they're also well-informed about their products AND they're not pushy. I've had folks there specifically point out the cheaper products to me if they've been better-suited for my needs. Great place! read more

This place is wonderful! I've never gone in and not been greeted, helped and given advice. I moved to Stoneham 2 years ago and haven't been back to the big box home improvement stores since. Spartan Ace has got a huge paint section and lots of expert help on hand. When I get heavy things like mulch or soil, there's always a nice offer to carry it out for me. As a female, a hardware store can seem particularly intimidating , (I'm much more suited to a fabric store) but I love shopping there. We recently bought a house nearby and had a lot of painting and projects to do. We talked to Alan at the start and he agreed to give us a 10% discount going forward since we'd be buying a lot. We got all of our Benjamin Moore paint there and well as small hardware needs and our lawn mower and grill. Great quality, and there was always someone knowledgeable to ask about which product lines work best. I feel better about supporting a small business rather than Home Depot or Lowes. I still go to those big box stores for certain items, but I find them overwhelming. The prices are pretty much the same too. read more

Have been a customer for over 20 years. Recently service has gone seriously downhill. Less than 6 months ago, I had the window glass replaced in an old sash and was quite pleased with the price and quality of work. Yesterday, I brought another item in for glass replacement and was told 'We don't do that here'. I asked when they had stopped since I had glass replaced there relatively recently, the young man just kept replying, 'we don't do that here' in a tone conveyed a detached annoyance. He suggested a local auto glass option down the street (rated 3 stars). I will be patronizing the many other local HW stores from now on. read more

I prefer this to the other hardware store in town. The staff is always friendly and knowledgeable. The man who works in the paint department is always so nice. He goes out of his way for you and assists you, all with a smile on his face. The store has many items that are not hugely popular national brand names. They sell Dirtex which has been around forever (new to me!) and works better than any popular branded item. I like being able to shop here for all the little hard to find items (everything from Dirtex to tea strainers to garden hose parts to sink decloggers!). read more
