Copped me a fuzzy friend. I named her Squid. She is very playful and so adorable, so I wanted to make sure she had a good place to go. I took her in to make sure she was all okay and up-to-date on her shots. The staff was very friendly and kind when talking to me, and they gave me a lot of good information when I visited. Also, we looked around the shelter at the other pets just for fun, and the facility is very clean. Overall, they have a lot of helpful and friendly employees if you have any questions or concerns with animal rescue! I was very pleased with my experience. Covid has been really hard on my 5year old, and he's honestly been a trooper, but not being able to see a lot of his friends has put him in a funk, and affecting his sleep. Our dog is amazing, but I was hoping If I could find a smaller fur friend for our son's room, it may help. Just for fun I was browsing the SPCA website and fell in love with two guinea pig brothers. They are adorable and we are already so in love. Even with Covid, SPCA's communication has been awesome, but things are a bit different currently. Check their website for updated rules. Everything is currently by appointment and you do have to leave a message on the phone, so gotta have patience with that. It was a nice, clean facility back in 2019. I am sure it still is, but now in 2022 I have a complaint. They do not return calls to your voice-mail. I have left many messages for 6 weeks and today I tried the volunteer line and received an actual person. Of course she was unable to help me and wanted me to leave a voice-mail for someone else to get back to me. Yeah, like that would happen. We love the SPCA! When my boyfriend and I decided that we were ready to adopt a kitten, the SPCA was the first, and only place we went. On our first visit we filled out a survey about what we were looking for in a pet, what our home was like, what our expectations were and what our history with pets was. After that we were given a visitors pass and were allowed in to visit the kittens, cats, puppies, dogs, and bunnies. All of the animal rooms are very well kept and there aren't any overwhelming bad pet smells. Most of the animals were sleeping, but the ones that were awake all seemed happy. The staff were very interactive and persistent in reminding us to sanitize our hands. On our second visit we were able to check in at the front desk since we had already filled out the survey. We decided on a kitten and started the adoption process. The adoption counselor took around an hour telling us about our new kitten's medical history, what we needed to do and she answered every single one of our questions. She was very knowledgeable and it was very obvious that she wanted to take the time to make sure this kitten was going to have a good home. On a downside, I was disappointed that our new kitten came home with an upper respiratory virus and conjunctivitis, but we are taking care of him! The website is very helpful and provides a ton of information not only about animals available for adoption, but also pet care and pet FAQ. I feel good that we can call the pet help hotline if we have any questions and we feel confident that we made the best choice. If we every adopt again, we will go back to the Wake County SPCA! read more

I adopted my dog from Wake SCPA as a first-time foster fail. I'm still on the foster email list and can say these folks tirelessly make every effort to get these animals permanent homes. That said, they're honest and up front about any health or behavioral issues they observe. These folks love animals and are personally vested in their welfare. This is an incredible facility. It's nearly everything you'd want to see in a shelter: cage-free (unless the animal is being treated for something or on a special diet), big rooms, plenty of toys and beds and playtime and staff that actually wants to do the right thing for each of their pet residents. Some of the rooms open out to large sun rooms where the cats can snooze in the sun. The dog rooms don't have their own sunroom, but there is an area for them to be let out to play. You can stay as long as you'd like, and if you're a frequent visitor, you can get a frequent visitor pass allowing you access without the paperwork. Once you decide, the adoption counselor will work with you to make sure you're chosen companion is a good fit -- both you and your pet get a fun little personality-matching profile. And cats and dogs aren't all, there's even some rabbits if your preference tends to the more sedate pet. We visited the Wake SPCA center and spoke with a specialist on Saturday 2.23.19. The adoption process is biased and works against placing animals in a good home. From the very beginning of the "interrogation", the adoption specialist had determined that we were not good candidates because we already have several pets in the household. We have a special needs dog that is not neutered (our choice) and we not currently using heart worm preventative for our 3 dogs but they have been on preventative in the past. We were very honest and agreed that it was something that would need to be rectified with ALL of the pets as part of preparation for adoption. The employee was doing everything in her power to eliminate us as good candidates. We understand that they have to look out for the welfare of the animals but a black and white decision based on a 2 minute discussion that was unfair and biased. We were forth-coming and honest about every thing we were asked. We take care of our pets and feel like they are treated like kings and queens. Very unhappy with the outcome and will never darken their door (or any of the other SPCA facilities). I feel badly for all of the animals there waiting for a good home. They are play God with the hearts of those who come in looking to give a pet a good home. Very sad read more

Everyone there was very helpful and we were able to bring our boy Cooper home the same day. Everything we needed for him was available in the SPCA's store. Not as cheap as I could have found elsewhere, but the money goes to a good cause. I'm not going to be adopting again in the near future, but I would highly recommend everyone go to the SPCA for their next furry family member. I have been going to this SPCA for 10 years but have never actually adopted an animal from there until yesterday. My two other pets came from wake county animal shelter which is great too. The SPCA staff is friendly and the process is quick, they also have a store with good prices to help you take your new pet home. My new puppy came with all his shots and got neutered the day before. Wide variety of animals. When considering an animal, above a year of age, I'd highly advise to do the "dressed rehearsal" if you have ANY concerns that it may just not work out. It costs $250, but $200 is refunded upon return. If you adopt, then it goes towards the fees etc. It buys you 5 days and if it doesn't work you can take it back any time before the 5 days. Once you sign the papers it is YOUR dog and they really don't want it back. So make sure you're 100% confident in the animal or try the dress rehearsal first. It's a great insurance policy if it doesn't work out. read more

Great place to find a loveable dog, cat or bunny. The animals come and go very fast, especially the youngsters. I visited this location twice in the last week, once during business hours and the parking lot was full around 2:00~, every dog was just about gone. You can have a private play session with the pet of your choice to see if your compatible, etc. I didn't like the fact that people freely squirt hand sanitizer dozens of times on their hands carelessly. You really should wash your hands, rather than using a chemical to try and cleanse them. How about wash stations throughout the complex? If you go, please take a minute to wash your hands in the bathroom before exiting the building. The place is filled to the rim with "volunteers"!!! I give them a huge pat on the back. Drawbacks of adopting from here, you get interviewed, counseled, etc. They will try and talk you out of certain animals if they feel they are inappropriate for your household. Good for some people but not for all. Plus, they demand you take your newly adopted pet to a Vet within 2 weeks of adoption, that's another $150. I know its neccessary but please be prepared before going in there half cocked and ready to adopt. The animals are usually spade or neutered, dewormed, tick and flea killer applied, potty trained. read more

I would not recommend this place to anyone. We adopted two beautiful cats in November 2018. After bringing them home and getting our boys settled in, we started noticing health issues in one of them. Our beloved Moose ended up having chronic issues with crystals in his bladder and ultimately had to be put to rest in March 2019. We were heartbroken as was I'm sure his brother Caboose. We found out that SPCA screwed up medical records saying that it was Caboose who had been seen for blood in his urine. Now we are not sure if we laid Moose to rest or Caboose. But wait there is more: Since March we have had to take Caboose ?? To vet on five different occasions and ultimately now have had to put him down as well. WE ARE DEVASTATED. In what should be a happy time with new family members turned into our worst nightmare. FYI Caboose??ended up with the herpesvirus which attacked his eyes, ears, stomach and breathing. He is now at peace but not before going through months of agony. The Vet who treated him said that he has had the virus for a longtime, wonder why SPCA VETS didn't disclose this???? read more

We had our dog neutered at the SPCA clinic. We actually picked him up a little over an hour ago. When we got him he was covered in his own feces and the veterinarian claimed that "he pooped in his cage and I tried to clean it up, but he wasn't happy about it". Which is understandable but, it is upsetting that she didn't take the time to help him. I am sure laying in a small cage covered in your own feces is uncomfortable, especially after having a major surgery. It is also frustrating that around the time he was covered in his own feces, he was also heavily drugged, therefore it would've been slightly easier to clean. When we got home, after a rather smelly ride, we had to lay on the floor with him for upwards of an hour as we wiped and brushed the caked on sh.t off of him. Then we even had to cut chunks of it out. I'm not sure if the problem is not taking him outside to use the restroom or lack of persistence. Either way it did not make for a great experience for my dog or me. read more

To the salty, unprofessional staff I dealt with yesterday (one girl was nice though): I returned my adopted GS/Lab mix not because I could not handle him, but because I didn't want to endanger the other animals in my apartment complex. In less than a week, we had had at least 10 close calls (with dogs on and off-leash) where had I been a smaller, less-dominant woman, he would have seriously mauled and/or killed other dogs due to close quarters. (I am not mincing words here.) Mind you every single dog he threatened was much smaller than him and most of the time, they were submissive. While you all said he did not do well with other dogs, you failed to mention some specifics. What you did say was that he barks at other dogs, would not be able to go to a dog park, is not friendly. Fair enough. However, what that looks like is he spots a dog 200+ yards out and his whole demeanor changes, same happens if he catches a scent of any other dog. His ears go straight up, body stiffens, he goes low as if ready to pounce or SILENTLY lunges with hyper focus, and this sort of seething intensity I have never seen in a dog. He then has to be dragged away, nearly strangling himself to get to the dog (or cat) as I can't break his focus with words, touch, or food. In an apartment complex, that is too much because all our doors face inward and corners are blind so god forbid someone round a corner or open their door with a dog coming out and we couldn't move fast enough or even with a short lead, I had something in my hand or was even a bit distracted. He also gave me a warning bite when I corrected him on leash and the SPCA was like well that's not a real bite because it didn't break skin. I understand it is not as severe, so categorize these things, but that is a show of dominance that is concerning. Nevertheless, he was great indoors, quiet, doesn't get into things, good in the kennel, I mean you couldn't ask for more, but outside he was a different dog. We were working on things and I had scheduled training, but since when did the safety of others get placed above the needs of 1? I'm sorry, but that's a negative in my book. Also, how can you exercise and/or play with a dog outside who cannot handle the presence of any other creature? Newsflash: you can't. He was so hyper-vigilant that he never sat or laid down for more than seconds outside, if at all, even with treats and he didn't really like toys; it's like he couldn't relax even after hours of walking. He was always on and therefore, I had to be as well, which was so stressful. I'm super laid back too, so in the time I had him, I didn't sleep well any night and my things got neglected because all my energy went to him and it was exhausting. Being vigilant or 100% on all the time was quite taxing, on him and on me. So I returned him because he needs his own private yard to be relaxed and happy in where no other dog has been/is present so he can learn to be around others first and be trained, then be walked out and about. An apartment was not the best home for him and I made a thoughtful decision on behalf of multiple people/animals, not just him. And I don't regret it. And while you may not understand or choose to see my side, your clear attitude was off-putting and certainly would discourage others from adopting here. Sure, it's sad, but if you knew he had problems before, you should probably try fostering him first, then adopting. But oh right, he will try to take out other dogs and foster families normally have multiple dogs. So I tried, he tried, but it wasn't the right fit and you all need to be okay with that because you aren't the ones who pay a price if he were to hurt someone, whether it be a dog or the owner protecting their dog. read more

I had the SPCA behaviorist come out to my house and help me with my dog. She was wonderful. I did rescue work in Florida. The dog she worked with me on was the last dog I had taken in before moving. I decided to keep him because he was not adoptable (not his fault).He has major issues but I couldn't give up on him even at times I think I should have. I had been doing rescue for 15 years. I had worked with trainers within the rescue outside the rescue another in Raleigh that took the dog for 2 weeks. I know one thing if you think you know it all with animals your wrong you can always learn. She gave wonderful suggestion. She could handle the dog when others didn't know how. I have never had a good experience with the SPCA. Twice now we looked at a dog, fell in love with one, and they decided to give the dog to someone else. The first time, years ago, the dog wasn't ready to adopt and so we reserved him and came back. In that span of time, another family decided they wanted him, and so the staff response was to draw names out of a hat and the other people got him, even though we were there days before these people were. Today, we played with a dog for 20 minutes, the volunteer taking care of her told us the process, but in the time it took to go to the front desk, someone else decided to adopt that specific puppy. The trainer didn't seem to know of anyone else who looked at the dog because she told me "congratulations!" I had to explain that someone else got him first and she didn't seem to understand. And now we have to explain it to a really disappointed two year old. Thanks for that. As for the process, you pick an animal, they do an interview to see if you're a good fit, and you pay a small fee and take him/her home. They give nice accommodations to a relatively small number of animals and are very choosy about the owners. Just don't let yourself fall in love with an animal until you've signed something. read more

I adopted my Fur-ever daughter Ella here back in 2009. I am so grateful that the SPCA brought this dog and I together. They took her in after her original owners fed my sweet girl gorilla glue abandoned her. When I met Ella she was shaved from her big surgery but through all that pain, you could tell the people here took great care of her. She was happy dog! Even happier when we left! I fostered moms with their pups for the SPCA since 2012. There are serious management concerns of which I addressed with a board member and the director Kim Jansen early in 2019. Based on the disrespectful treatment I received following that meeting with the board member and director Kim Jensen, Ms. Jensen had issues with the fact that I shared my concerns. I will no longer be fostering for the SPCA. I have a perfect set up for moms and pups out side of my home that is heated and air conditioned. It is clearly their loss due to Ms. Jansen's inability to recognize the "best interest of the animals" vs her own insecurities and priorities. The SPCA has a very large donation base and it appears that someone else might be more qualified to address the needs of the animals, staff and fosters of the SPCA of Wake County.
