Having done physical therapy before, with slow, eventual success but great frustration at the turnover and attention at multiple places, I had a bit of trepidation starting out here, but am so grateful I overcame it. The staff here is uniformly exceptional and caring, starting with my amazing PT, Gwen. An absolute dervish, whether she has one or several patients, you always feel her sincere attention to your care and exercises. She is unfailingly encouraging and positive, even as results were slow at first but now progressing well. The vibe is excellent throughout, whether the efficient and kind front desk staff or observing the other PTs with patients. Special shout out to the assistants as well--Natalie and Breanna in particular, always there to help with equipment or tips on form if your PT is busy. Considering people are coming here presumably in pain, it's just a refreshingly pleasant place to be, probably an underrated component in helping one feel better. While not the largest studio, it feels incredibly clean and well-kept, with new and diverse equipment, including a Pilates reformer. Ample lockers up front and a couple of changing rooms up front--again, an improvement on other experiences where I just had to change in a crappy bathroom. Saw 5 pt people here for a neck injury. 2 were good, 1 was okay, and 2 were not good at all. Finally decided to try another location after the therapist touched my neck for 5 minutes, didn't do anything to the affected area, and then had me do the same exercises i had been doing on the app. Basically a waste of a session. He made me question whether i was still needing pt. Then I moved location to the Nomad one and its night and day different. My therapist is so much better and more detailed. I feel like i am getting actual treatment now and progress with my injury. I think the worst part about the times square location is that its too busy. Most of the pt people are booked like every 20-30 mins and their empathy is just burned out. If you get the right person at times square, you'll be fine. But its just too uneven. I would hate to think people spend 10-20 pt sessions and run out of coverage when nothing is really done. read more

Appointment scheduling and admin are criminally clueless. TLDR: When I showed up with an acute and painful injury, Spear's receptionist cancelled my appointment because she hadn't confirmed my insurance. Following a painful leg injury, I look for a well-reviewed PT and come across Spear. According to the insurance provider's website, some but not all of Spear's locations are in network. I call the nearest of these to set up an appointment. My call goes to a central scheduling person, who says that ALL Spear locations are in network, and that I can go to a place closer to where I live. I am given an appointment for the very next day and submit insurance information etc. as instructed. The next day I limp to Times Square and ask the receptionist to confirm that it is covered by my insurance. I am again told that all locations are in network, but that it takes at least 48 hours from my first call to confirm this. Then the receptionist changes her mind and insists that I reschedule my appointment until Spear confirms the coverage. The earliest possible appointment is six days later. So now I'm home again, in pain, and wondering why Spear would give me a next day appointment, just to cancel it when I show up. As unprofessional as it comes. read more

Getting physical therapy isn't fun, but I feel lucky to have chosen Spear to get it fixed. This location is awesome: it looks very clean and new; staffs are super extremely helpful and friendly. My doctor recommended Nicole and specifically this location after my knee accident, and I was able to schedule an appointment right away. Nicole has a lot of experience, and was able to help me work on weak parts after the first session of assessment. Sessions are usually one on one or sharing with another person, either way I never felt like I was ignored. Actual practices are also customized to each person. Moreover, the receptionist Joyce is such a sweet girl! She is super helpful, has a great sense of humor, and is very friendly. I got a question with my insurance before, and she was able to do a lot of research on her part to help me figure it out. This is the first few time I ever get physical therapy, and I am glad ended up with Spear. read more

The newest location of Spear Physical Therapy is pretty great (though I've never been to any others, I hear good things). I was pretty grateful they finally opened as A - they accept my insurance BCBS, B - they're across the street from my office. It was a slight challenge to set up my first appointment as their email system seemed to be down, but I got a call back saying they were ready. First timer check-in is a snap assuming you were able to fill out the forms they've emailed you and your insurance has been confirmed. What's particularly awesome is that they seem to be very knowledgeable about how deductibles and out of pocket maximums work as since my surgery, I am highly likely to be at my out of pocket maximum - and they could bill me later things settle. Coat rack, changing room, lockers, restroom, check check and check. There are many tables available and I'm sure they will be growing quickly as I have only had two sessions and I see the clients rolling in already - with only Ninia and Ben, and their excellent receptionist. The (my) primary therapist Ninia is awesome and truly knowledgeable while always referring to my doctor's notes as well as her training. Exercises are tough, but as long as you're honest with how you're feeling (ie, I need to strengthen my ankle since I ruptured my patella), they will get you back into fighting shape safely if you just believe in the work that you're doing there, and at home. My only small critique would be for them to get a water fountain (as I'm sure it'll get busy also), and that the dressing rooms need a bit of vacuuming. read more

I underwent a 2-month course of PT as a result of hip replacement. I arrived at Spears just off of a cane and left better than before the surgery in terms of range of motion and strength. All thanks to Spears and my therapist Michaela Lanae Duncan. Lanae not only coached me on the road to recovery as prescribed but helped me through rough patches where attendant aches appeared. In one case, she immediately diagnosed some knee pain as stemming from a back issue, and there began treatment until about a week later that pain was gone. This speaks to her depth of knowledge in her field; a confidant and friendly professional. And a great coach! She works in a new facility, safely COVID-19 compliant, a large open space; friendly, professional staff (even Joyce, who greets you is a gem); and all the equipment and patience and motivation you need to look forward to every appointment as I did. read more

Spear has been an extremely rewarding and well-worth it experience, particularly at Times Square/Ctr for Performing Arts. All the staff were exceptionally friendly and welcoming (I was genuinely happy to go every time and sad when I finished treatment), and the care was high-quality. Gwen Giffard (my PT) was a real MVP for several months, through several different treatment cases. She is an excellent clinician, very thorough and also excellent at explaining the causes/remedies of the different injuries I was working through. Not-for-nothing, she's also formerly a competitive Irish step dancer (yes, like Riverdance) -- which as an active irish dancer myself was EXTREMELY helpful and allowed her to give more bespoke/effective care -- and for those not in the know, competitive Irish dance is some for-real crazy stuff and so Gwen knows how to effectively engage with athletes and performers who are consistently pushing their bodies to the max. She's dedicated and tireless and committed and and an all around superstar. Would highly recommend this locations, and Spear overall to anyone who's looking. If you're concerned about this being a big corporate patient mill, it's not -- it's full of real people who really care and it's great. Could not have been happier. I had a really great experience at Spear Times Square that would never have happened if it weren't for the staff at the front dest, namely Max. I had concerns about my insurance and Max went above and beyond to sort it out, explain it all, and check in with me as things went along. I cannot recommend Gwen and Spear enough! Not only is Gwen incredibly knowledgeable, she takes the time to explain everything and answer any questions you may have. I made an appointment after a surgery because I lost strength and mobility. She provided treatment to the area then guided me through exercises that were incredibly effective. One of the best things I did in 2020 was begin physical therapy at SPEAR Physical Therapy with Gwen Giffard PT, DPT. Gwen is both an amazing physical therapist and human being. She comes up with the most creative PT exercises for my knee and shoulder injuries that, in addition to being very effective, also have me looking forward to my next PT visit. I will be forever grateful to Brittany and the staff at SPEAR (shout outs to Andrea, Corey and Max!) for really a life-changing PT experience. Shortly after moving to NYC, I went to SPEAR as a last-ditch attempt to treat my undiagnosed chronic lower back pain (SI joint area). I initially chose SPEAR due to their abundance of locations and staff. Having gone to PT 3 times in the past in the 7 years of pain, I wasn't expecting much. Little did I know this experience would be completely different from all the rest. From the get-go, Brittany Chan (my PT) was the perfect mix of friendliness, compassion and professionalism. I always felt very comfortable and truly heard at our appointments. At our first appointment, I experienced for the 1st time someone at PT asking me what my goals were besides just getting past the pain! As a young person with chronic pain, that was the first time I'd felt optimistic that I could ever hope to be continuously active, and have feasible fitness goals (trying new sports, dancing, etc.) again. Brittany was patient, attentive, and answered my many questions clarifying each exercise, even when the clinic was at its busiest. She knew when it was time to give me harder exercises, and always checked in to see how I was feeling or correct my form. If I was having a bad flare-up that day, we would tone it back down and make adjustments to the session plan. The helpers (forgetting their technical name) were always enthusiastic to step in and explain new exercises when needed, or even just to have fun conversations to keep things fun! SPEAR kept me on for 6 months, which I really appreciated - as it's a long time for a patient who didn't come in due to a terrible injury or accident. During this time, I finally got a diagnosis for my pain with a specialist (outside of SPEAR) and was told I had a chronic disease. Knowing for sure that my pain will likely never go away was a bit devastating, but I feel confident that with the well fleshed-out program Brittany built for me, I will actually be able to keep moving and exercising through flares for once. This has been my fourth time going to PT in the seven years I've had back pain, and this was the first time where I not only felt truly seen and understood by a provider for the pain I was going through, but also that I have a thorough program with exercises at different levels to accommodate how I'm feeling. Now knowing that I will probably live with this forever, SPEAR helped me completely change my way of thinking re: treatment and rewrote my past bad associations with PT. Thank you Brittany and everyone at SPEAR!! Logistics: I've never been to the other offices, but the Times Square one is located in a quiet elevator building by the NRW and ACE stations. The office is very clean, spacious and always has a banging playlist (good variety of music, including Disney trap, oldies, and 2000s hits). The staff have themed Fridays where they dress up as something; past themes have included Christmas and dressing like each other. As they also treat many performance arts professionals, it felt great to relate to the providers with my own musical theater and dance background. I initially started with virtual appointments during COVID, and would really recommend sticking to in-person as it was a completely different experience. Once in-person, we actually discovered I had been doing a few of the exercises slightly incorrectly due to the camera not picking it up. The clinic is less busy during early hours (7-9 am) and late evening (5-7 pm), so I preferred making appointments then (was also nice to not have to leave work during the day). Highly recommend this place! So grateful to be able to get back to PT in person in 2021. This location is fantastic for so many reasons. Convenient location right off the trains (so helpful in the snowy winter weather!), the space itself is clean, COVID safe and aware (disinfecting surfaces, props, masks for all, everything). The staff, both at the desk and the therapists, are all lovely and full of positive vibes. Ninia and Joyce were so kind to me from the minute I walked in the first time, really taking time to talk me through everything from treatment options to insurance and how to make things work for me financially. My therapist here, Michaela Lanae Duncan, has been excellent - its been just a few weeks so far and already I am seeing so much improvement in my strength, range of motion, and much less chronic pain in my day to day. I have seen several physical therapists in New York City for my knee injuries and osteoarthritis, and Ninia and her team at Spear Times Square are the best by far! The individual attention Ninia gives me during my session is extraordinary. She works with me on developing an individual treatment plan that we implement and it evolves and changes as I progress. I originally saw her at the Plaza location for a torn ACL and meniscus; later she started treating me for a shoulder injury that turned out to be a SLAP tear, and I "moved" with her to the new Times Square location. I got a torn meniscus repair and needed to do physical therapy to prep for a backpacking trip, and my PT and the entire team got me not only to a level where I could do a multi-day backpacking trip, but also to a level where I was confident in my ability to hike. Even with other patients there, everyone checked in on me and watched my form during the exercises provided. The space is great - very open, bright, and a beautiful view of the city. Location is ideal for people in show business - Right in the middle of the theatre district, next door to Actor's fund, 3 blocks up from Actor's Equity, 5 blocks from SAG-AFTRA, very near BDC, and a couple blocks up from all the audition places. Spear Times Square is absolutely the best place for physical therapy. I have been through hell at other physical therapy practices like Harkness, however, the people at SPEAR TS are truly phenomenal. I had severe back pain and limited movement. When I finished my treatment with Michaela, I had zero pain and I am able to perform all my normal activities. The therapy I received was unlike other physical therapy offices, which offered cookie cutter treatments. Michaela understands that my back pain is caused by restrictions in areas other than my back. On each visit, she evaluated the movement of my spine, geared her treatment based on its alignment, and stretched me accordingly. I was impressed with Michaela's knowledge of anatomy. She gave me exercises to prevent muscle weaknesses she saw each time. Michaela showed me modified ways of doing my personal exercise routine to avoid future issues. She provided me with exercise videos for an app that I can use at home. I cannot say enough about the professionalism and care Michaela gave to me. Gwen is AMAZING!!! I feel so fortunate to have been able to work with her for my injury (foot fracture). She is exceedingly knowledgeable and very competent in what she does; she not only addressed and honed in on the problem area, but viewed my injury through the lens of the whole person, addressing walking mechanics, other muscle imbalances, posture, and more. She truly cares about her patients, listens to their input, and implements treatments that takes all of that into account. The exercises were always new, varied, and really helpful. I looked forward to my PT sessions every week thanks to Gwen's upbeat personality and expert care - and the whole clinic is the same.
