DO NOT GO HERE. If you do make sure you really know your plan because they will try to rip you off. I stopped in to ask a question if they took my insurance and before I knew it I'm being examined. The doctor was very nice. But the guy never quoted prices or told me about my benefits here until after the exam. I realized something was wrong when he quoted prices I knew were wrong. It was only then when I asked why did he tell me they were out of network. Then he said I have two choices - I can pay or he can void but I cant have my scrip. "I gotta take the loss for the exam - all you lose is time," he said. What an asshole. I lost more than time since I took the day off to find an eye doctor. Just wanted to post up my recent experience at Specs for Less. Since I use Yelp myself to figure out if I want to support a business or not. Well, I am so glad I walked into this place. The staff was really friendly (even while juggling multiple customers). As I waited my turn, I was pleasantly surprised at the professionalism I received from Jose. Jose didn't have a problem answering any of my questions and made me feel comfortable and appreciated. Jose was extremely knowledgeable- he was able to answer any question I had about frames and lenses, even about insurance. I am glad I went in. Totally recommend! read more

They didn't even do an exam all they did was use the measurements from my normal eye exam and then give me a trail pair of contacts to see if they were a good fit or not! NO THEY ARE NOT A GOOD FIT! Went here yesterday for a 2:00 PM appointment I booked in advance. Admit-tingly arrived by 2:10PM and was still able to be seen. The staff are very kind and had a friendly relationship with a few locals that were simply sitting and enjoying the air conditioner inside. There was a rude walk-in and the staff handled her with care and attention and explained to her their process on seeing a new patient which she understood. The exam was very quick and I appreciate how kind the optometrist was and how she agrees Acuvue Moist can be a weird fit for some people's eyes. I was seen at 3-and out by the 3:20 after purchasing a contact order for 6 months with the exam for only $267 which is an amazing deal! Would return but probably would aim for the first appointment of the day since I arrived during their peak time. read more

Okay. So far I'm writing purely on customer service of the way they handle telephone inquiries. The first time I called (I am getting glasses for the first time) to ask regular questions the woman was really bitter and didn't answer any questions I asked -just told me to come in. I called back today and I don't know if it was her or someone else but still rude. I'm about to go there because it's the closest place around me and who knows? When I went in the staff was really nice and helpful and made me feel good. The lady that helped me was very nice and accommodating and even gave me her opinion of the glasses I tried on. It's not my favorite thing crossing from the west to east side of NYC . . . and I have to put aside at least 2 hours if going to SoHo or above 86th Street. The trip was worth it as the employees were polite and professional at Specs For Less. They are in Spanish Harlem on the west side of 3rd Ave btwn 105 and 106, a couple of blocks away from the 103rd St stop on the 6 train. Titanium frames start at $200.00. Buying glasses, like buying a tie, is something personal and this is the 4th store I've visited recently. I found some frames I really liked and they weren't discounted using my HIP insurance. Amanda worked it out so that I still got the discount. On top of that Miguel stepped in and discounted the anti-glare lenses. All told it was a little under $300.00, still expensive, but about the best you are going to do in NYC! Specs For Less got rave reviews on Google but I didn't see any on Yelp for this particular store. So here it is . . . I'll be back! read more

I went here monday for a new eye exam the doctor was very nice through and made my experience very pleasant the wait time and length of my exam wasn't long at all, also i was told my glasses would be ready in 10 days i got them today which is Saturday im very pleased with that. I give this place 4 stars only because for insurance frames there aren't many selections in designs or colors other than that i would definitely recommend this place and i do plan on going back. read more

BEWARE of erroneous billing practices! I took my RX here on 7/9/22 for a complete pair of glasses covered by ins. (GVS) and the saleswoman, Rose read it incorrectly, thus, recommending I get thinner lens, AR coating etc. I paid $198 for the recommended lens. Rose miss-read my prescription, the glasses were unusable and I didn't need the upcharged add-ons. I requested a refund and told the store manager, Miguel, I did not want glasses just my refund to which he replied, "okay". Two weeks later, on 8/17, I received a voice message to come pick up my glasses, which I thought was an oversight given the aforementioned, but, upon checking my credit card statement, the refund was not issued. Because I had not yet received the refund, I called, 8/26, and spoke with, Ashley, to find out what was going on with the refund. She said she didn't know and I would need to speak with the manager, Miguel, who will call me back. Miguel did not call back and no refund was issued almost a week later so on 8/31, I went into the store and he tells me he remade the glasses, with AR coating, polycarbonate lens, scratch resistant coating because that's what I had previously and now was only entitled to a $98 refund because those add-ons were $100 in copays. He also said he could not refund without the original method used, which is why a refund was not issued. That should have been done I came in and discovered the RX was incorrect. I told him I didn't want glasses from them (again); I wanted a refund. I pointed out my ins. provides basic glasses with no copays and that's all I ever wanted from them. He said he couldn't refund the money and he would need to speak with the owner, Jeff Hirsh. After much back and forth, Jeff agreed to speak with me and initially refused to refund me unless I got the basic pair through him since he billed ins. I told him I was entitled to a refund regardless and to process my refund. He eventually did but said he would not contact my ins. company to say I did not receive glasses and I would loose the voucher. read more

Do yourself a favor and don't go there, unless you enjoy the challenge of dealing with stores that try their best to rip you off. They don't have a price tag on their frames, and when you ask how much a certain frame costs, they will do everything they could NOT to tell you. They'll only calculate the total price for you once you've done the exam, and then they seem to just assign a price for the frame. Be prepared to shed several hundred dollars on a no-brand frame. Bottom line is, they are not trying to save you money to make you happy and expect you to come back for more services. Their strategy seems to be to squeeze all the juice out of a first-time customer, because they're afraid, rightly so, that the customers are not coming back. Now I see the point that F Z and Hannah H were trying to make. It is a GHETTO place and they do try to RIP YOU OFF. Be aware of the two 5-star reviews, they look very fake to me and do not relate to me at all. It's curious that they suddenly came out right after the Amazon deal was on. i've been wearing corrective lenses for 17 years (glasses + contacts) and have NEVER had any business attempt to scam me like this. went in last week for a basic eyeglass exam + pair of glasses (insurance covered in full). in addition, i requested a contact lens exam/fitting that i knew would be out of pocket. with that said, i was not expecting to be forced to pay $150 for an INCOMPLETE contact lens RX, no trial pair (you can keep it, thanks), and then told that it was because i refused to fork over an additional $58 for a 6 month supply of contacts as part of their "package" deal. on top of that, Rose told me i could take the incomplete RX to any optometrist elsewhere for only a $40 fitting since i declined to purchase the lens package. really? who in their right mind would do this? never have i ever had a contact lens exam in which the optometrist did not provide a pair of trial lens to immediately try on and then check the fit during the same visit. if such practice is "archaic" or "poor," then fine, tell me to try it on and return in a few days... but don't bargain with me and withhold an RX that is rightfully and legally mine, especially if it is $150 for a piece of paper. needless to say, i refused to pay for a worthless RX and hoped they'd give me a complete one if i gave up a trial pair to save them money... didn't work. after some arguing in which the optometrist had to get involved (AFTER feigning innocence: "i don't normally deal with the store side of things,"), i was eventually provided with a trial pair and forced to return for a fitting in order to obtain the complete RX. what a nightmare of a 1.5 hour visit that should have been less than 30 minutes. my advice: listen to your customers, do legitimate business, and learn how to graciously accept "no" for an answer. will never return after the follow up visit. **the follow up visit went smoothly; complete contact lens RX and glasses received without question. read more

Did not clean well their station to examine the eye. The doctor seemed like she was tired of "cleaning" and washing her hands. I don't even think she used soap, just washed fingertips. She was also rude. Staff did not disinfect glasses before or after giving them to me to try on. Someone walked in without a mask and they didn't even enforce the rules of wearing a mask. Felt very uncomfortable in the place. After getting home I receive a phone call stating that they didnt have the glasses that I chose and that I should go back to pick other ones. Didn't even bother going back to try anything they weren't going to clean. Totally didn't care about their customers. I decided to go to another shop to pick out glasses at Metro Optics and received great customer service. Only allowed 6 people at the time and also cleaned everything with disinfectant after each use and all the stations. They even had a cup that says unused pens and used pens. Should've went there in the first place. If you're running away from COVID don't visit Spec for less. read more

I went to Specs for Less today. I have Metroplus health insurance and I was happy that they accepted the insurance and the store was referred to me by a neighbor. My first impression was good because the store was merchandised well. It was bright and the furniture was not worn. But everything after that was a nightmare. The staff was rude and condescending. I was using a new health insurance and they were not helpful at answering questions. They asked for my personal health information out loud in front of other patients (I though that was a HIPAA violation), and they asked me to sign incomplete paperwork. I told the representative that I wanted to make sure they were not charging for a service I did not receive (she had already mentioned to me that the health insurance would pay for the exam--but I didn't have an exam. I had brought my own prescription from another doctor). After I insisted on having the form filled out before I signed authorizing a charge, they rudely declined me service. I waited in that office a total of one hour and fifteen minutes! I had been persistent, but kept a respectful tone and volume. The representatives raised their voices with me, and honestly, I think they wanted to charge for the exam although I didn't have one. I think they may be involved in fraud in that office. How can I think anything else of an office that doesn't even comply with the most basic of privacy. This place is terrible. I walked in and waited at the counter and this lady was on her computer, saw us walk in and did not even acknowledge us until we told her. I asked if they took our insurance and she said they did in an incredibly rude way. It seemed as though she didn't want to do her job. I looked at the frames and decided to look at frames outside of the insurance. I asked about a specific ray ban frame and she saw I was interested so she raised the price about $300! I have been to many places and their price for the glasses were $150-180. When I asked how much they were she took a while to think and said they were $490! Ray ban doesn't even sell them for that price! I asked why they were waaaaay over priced and she said they have rent and bills to pay. How do you say that to a customer? I went to the specs for less located at the address on 104 street on third avenue . The staff was friendly at first , but god forbid you start asking technical questions. Long story short I went there because it's a discount program through my union. Which compensates you with a discounted price on examination and glasses . For a total amount of 300 dollars . So I saw some glasses that were on a discounted price for 150 . So I got the examination and the glasses . The total amounted to no more then 800. So I paid out of pocket 500 dollars. After careful review and asking some technical questions with their branch company . I found out that they overcharge me by 150 dollars extra. On the initial visit I asked for a itemized receipt which they fail to give me. Even after I pickup the glasses . Long story short they are a bunch of crooks. The point that I had to get the Adminstration involved GVS. To get my money back . And the fact that they tried to talk out of my complaint the premise of fare policy doesn't exist here .They made every single excuse possible to excused themselves from any liability . It bother me that in times when you expect to be treated fare . That they are always people like they willing to pray on the uninformed . These people need to be held to a higher standard . God forbid how many other people they cheated out of this same program that my union provides . read more
